* April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month- how can you participate in programming?

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about sexual violence and supporting survivors. Sexual assault is a pervasive issue on college campuses, with 13% of all students experiencing rape or sexual assault through physical force, violence, or incapacitation. Among undergraduate students, 26.4% of females and 6.8% of males experience these forms of sexual violence. Members of historically marginalized communities face even higher rates of sexual violence.

It's crucial that we come together to address this issue and promote a safe and respectful environment for everyone.

We have several events planned throughout the month to educate and engage our community:

  • Healthy Relationships Program: Join us on April 10th from 5:50-6:45pm in SOBA 71 to learn about building and maintaining healthy relationships.
  • Library Display: Visit the library to explore a curated display on sexual assault awareness and prevention.
  • Interactive Exhibit: Engage with an interactive exhibit in the Multicultural Student Commons that highlights the impact of sexual violence and ways to support survivors.
  • Lunch and Learn: Attend a session with Nursing professor Chantal Wood on Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners on April 29th from 12-1pm in the Multicultural Student Commons. This session will provide valuable insights into the role of these specialized nurses in supporting survivors and collecting evidence.

We encourage all community members to participate in these activities and to always ensure that they obtain clear and enthusiastic consent from their partners. Let's work together to create a campus culture where everyone feels safe and respected.

* UE men's basketball adds Marlon Barnes Jr.

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Marlon Barnes Jr. was announced as the newest signee to the University of Evansville men’s basketball team by head coach David Ragland.

“We're excited to add Marlon and his family to our UE family.  It was extremely important to add height, athleticism, and perimeter shooting to our roster,” Ragland exclaimed.  “Marlon imbodies all those qualities and has the ability to both defend multiple positions while offensively playing multiple positions.”

Barnes was a redshirt freshman at the University of Pittsburgh last season after redshirting as a true freshman the year prior.  He saw the floor in eight games for the Panthers throughout the 2024-25 season.  Barnes made his collegiate debut in the season opener against Radford where he played three minutes while picking up a rebound and an assist.  In the regular season finale, he scored two points versus Boston College.

Rated a three-star recruit out of Brush High School in Cleveland, Ohio, Barnes was ranked as the No. 5 overall recruit from the state of Ohio.  As a senior, he averaged 13.1 points and 5.0 rebounds while being named Ohio Prep Sports Writers Association Honorable Mention.  Barnes was also named to the Northeast Lakes All-District Team and was a News Herald Second Team All-Star pick.

“I chose UE because I feel that it is a place where I will have an opportunity to play the game that I love and develop both on and off the court,” Baranes said.  “The coaches and staff are very welcoming and seems excited for what I can bring to the team.”

One of his top performances came in an OHSAA Division I district final victory over Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary’s where he recorded 17 points, 10 rebounds, and two blocks.

Barnes led his team to a 20-4 record and a pair of state playoff wins as a junior.  He garnered News Herald All-Star recognition in 2022.

* Baseball postpones game against Indiana to Wednesday

EVANSVILLE, Ind. -- Due to inclement weather this evening, the University of Evansville baseball team has postponed its game against Indiana.

With thunderstorms projected for most of this evening, the Purple Aces will play Indiana in a home contest on Wednesday, April 30. Wednesday's game has been pushed back an hour to a 6 p.m. CT first pitch to avoid projected rain showers on Wednesday as well.

In the first meeting of the year between UE and the Hoosiers, IU came out on top in a 7-4 midweek battle back on March 18. Evansville kept things close in the first game but wasn't able to come back from an early 2-0 deficit that began in the third inning. The Aces will come close to evening the series with Indiana at home with a win on Wednesday night, as IU currently holds a 14-12 advantage in Evansville.

* Aces baseball back at home for an in-state midweek showdown

The Purple Aces left Springfield with a big win over the Missouri State Bears on Sunday afternoon. In UE's final MVC series at Hammons Field, Evansville had a big offensive showing in the series finale. The Aces outlasted an almost four-hour slugfest against the Bears, picking up a 16-11 win.  UE had a season-high 17 hits against Missouri State in the win. Prior to Sunday's game, Evansville had three 16-hit games earlier in the season, with the most recent coming back in March during the Aces' first weekend of conference play at Murray State. UE had three batters combine for nine of the team's 17 hits, while nine of the 10 batters in the lineup recorded at least a hit.

Evansville returns home for the next week, starting with a return visit from Indiana in the team's home-and-home series. In their first meeting of the year, IU came out on top in a 7-4 midweek battle back on March 18. The Aces kept things close in the first game but weren't able to come back from an early 2-0 deficit that began in the third inning. UE will come close to evening the series with the Hoosiers at home with a win on Tuesday night, as IU currently holds a 14-12 advantage in Evansville.

Indiana comes into Tuesday night's game with a 23-21 overall average and an even 10-10 Big Ten Conference record. The Hoosiers were swept over the weekend by the Iowa Hawkeyes and will be looking to break their losing streak behind offensive leader outfielder Devin Taylor with a .366 batting average, a team-high 38 walks, and 50 RBIs.

Evansville added four home runs over the weekend at Hammons Field for its best slugging week of the season with five total long balls and 15 multi-base hits in four games. UE had its first back-to-back games with multiple home runs this season in Springfield, while sophomore Charlie Longmeier (Seymour, Ind. / Seymour HS) had a home run in each game. Longmeier had a big weekend for Evansville as he along with senior infielder Cal McGinnis (Kimberly, Wis. / Bradley) batted .429 in 14 at-bats in Hammons Field. Longmeier was one of three players with six hits against Missouri State on the weekend, and he was also the only Ace to record multiple home runs with his fourth and fifth career homers on Saturday and Sunday.

Also stepping up for UE was freshman first baseman Jake McGhee (Fenton, Mo. / Christian Brothers Academy) as he led the team's starters in batting average over the weekend, slashing .462/.533/.538 as he was six of 13 at the plate. McGhee also added an RBI, and two runs scored over three games in Springfield. But it wasn't just Evansville's younger players showing up at the plate at Hammons Field. Despite dropping the series to the Bears, over half the Aces' lineup batted over .300 on the weekend. In only three at-bats this weekend, senior catcher/pinch hitter Evan Waggoner was a perfect three-of-three from the plate with two doubles. While McGhee, McGinnis, Longmeier, infielder Drew Howard (Ferdinand, Ind. / Forest Park HS), and outfielder Harrison Taubert (Casper, Wyo. / Northeast CC) all had batting averages over .300.
