UNIVERSITY OF EVANSVILLE THEATRE PRESENTS LITTLE WOMEN
|
|
The University of Evansville Theatre announces the final installment of the 2024–2025 season with Kate Hamill’s adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s novel, LITTLE WOMEN. This production opens at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Apr. 24, in the May Studio Theatre. Additional performances are at 7:30 p.m., on Apr. 25 and 26, and at 2:00 p.m., on Apr. 26 and 27. This award-winning playwright has once again treated her source material with mischievous freedom, and the result is a sparklingly fresh adaptation of a timeless classic. Jo March has no intention of being a typical Victorian lady! In fact, all the March sisters strive to be intelligent and imaginative young women, and all are forced to reconcile their own ambitions with society’s expectations. Using whip-smart dialogue, this modern adaptation is as intimate, endearing, and surprising as Alcott’s original novel was 150 years ago.
LITTLE WOMEN is directed by Maya Barry, a senior stage management major, from Marietta, Ga.; Guest Artist, Austin Kuhn ’20 serves as the scenic designer; Josie Madzik, a junior theatre studies major from Howell, Mich., is the costume designer; Ethan Santiago, a junior design and technology major from Belton, Texas, is the lighting designer; William Cooper Sanders, a junior theatre performance major from Jeffersonville, Ind., serves as the sound designer; Nick Geyvandova, a first-year theatre performance major from College Station, Texas, is the dramaturg; Jasmine Hardin, a first-year stage management major from Aurora, Colo., is the stage manager, and Quinn McGaugh, a junior performance major from McAlester, Okla., serves as the technical director.
The cast features Sophia McGuire, a junior theatre studies major from McKinney, Texas, as Jo March; Evelyn Hipp, a senior theatre studies major from Nolensville, Tenn., as Meg March; Kiara Cantu, a first-year performance major from Edinburg, Texas, as Beth March; Emily Proctor, a sophomore theatre studies major from Jeffersonville, Ind., as Amy March; Kennedy Olson, a junior performance major from Porter, Texas, as Marmee March/Aunt March; Alyssa Meadows, a junior performance major from Louisville, Ky., as Hannah/Mrs. Mingott/Messenger; Landry Barker, a junior performance major from Fort Worth, Texas, as Theodore “Laurie” Laurence; Arturo Quepons, a junior theatre performance major from San Antonio, Texas, as John Brooks/Parrot; and Gage Dragoo, a first-year performance major from Frisco, Texas, as Robert March/Mr. Laurence.
Seating is limited, and tickets are $20 for general admission and $18 for senior adults, UE employees, and non-UE students. Single tickets may be purchased online at theatre.evansville.edu or by calling the ticket office at 812.488.2031. |

- Lora Becker- Professor of Psychology

Dr. Lora Becker earned her PhD and master’s degrees from the State University of New York (Binghamton), dual bachelor’s from Wright State University (Dayton, Ohio) and joined the UE faculty in 1999. Since joining the University, Dr. Becker has written numerous research articles and posters with undergraduate students and supported this research with a variety of granting sources including the Ball Brothers Venture Grant, the Mead Johnson Nutritional Grant, UE's Global Scholar grant and several UExplore Research Grants, ARSAF grants and ADVANTAGE Undergraduate Research grants. All of these research endeavors were sought in order to give students the opportunity to practice science on their way to their careers in medicine, teaching, and research. Her impact was felt on campus through several director positions over the past 20 years including the Neuroscience Program, the Summer Reading Program, the Major Discovery Program, the Academic Assessment Committee, and General Education. She spent a term as Faculty Senate Chair where she established meetings between Faculty Senate Executive board and the President's Cabinet. Her committee work is too numerous to list. Dr. Becker was the second recipient of the Eykamp Prize for extraordinary contributions by UE faculty to the University. She was also awarded the Mentor of the Year award from Faculty for Undergraduate Neuroscience (or FUN). Nationally, she served as president of Nu Rho Psi, the honor society for neuroscience, overseeing the first Indiana chapter of the organization established at UE. She served as treasurer of FUN and spent twelve years on the Board of Directors for Phi Kappa Phi, the largest interdisciplinary honors society, culminating her time serving as President in 2024. But through it all, it was the classroom that motivated Dr. Becker the most. She built several courses in the neuroscience program and now retires having taught every neuroscience course that the University of Evansville offers. What a great 26 years!

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month- how can you participate in programming?
|
|
April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about sexual violence and supporting survivors. Sexual assault is a pervasive issue on college campuses, with 13% of all students experiencing rape or sexual assault through physical force, violence, or incapacitation. Among undergraduate students, 26.4% of females and 6.8% of males experience these forms of sexual violence. Members of historically marginalized communities face even higher rates of sexual violence.
It's crucial that we come together to address this issue and promote a safe and respectful environment for everyone.
We have several events planned throughout the month to educate and engage our community:
- Healthy Relationships Program: Join us on April 10th from 5:50-6:45pm in SOBA 71 to learn about building and maintaining healthy relationships.
- Library Display: Visit the library to explore a curated display on sexual assault awareness and prevention.
- Interactive Exhibit: Engage with an interactive exhibit in the Multicultural Student Commons that highlights the impact of sexual violence and ways to support survivors.
- Lunch and Learn: Attend a session with Nursing professor Chantal Wood on Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners on April 29th from 12-1pm in the Multicultural Student Commons. This session will provide valuable insights into the role of these specialized nurses in supporting survivors and collecting evidence.
We encourage all community members to participate in these activities and to always ensure that they obtain clear and enthusiastic consent from their partners. Let's work together to create a campus culture where everyone feels safe and respected. |

UE baseball makes final MVC trip to Missouri State
|
|
The Purple Aces are looking to continue their good week of Valley play in their final trip to Springfield and Hammons Field. The Missouri State Bears will join Conference USA in the 2025-26 academic year, making it their final year to pick up a potential seventh MVC Regular Season Title and a sixth MVC Tournament Championship. The Bears are in a good position to take the regular season title as they currently lead the Valley by a game over Murray State and Southern Illinois.
Missouri State is looking to get back ahead by multiple games in conference play. The Bears dropped their first MVC series of the season at UIC, only winning the middle match-up against the Flames 10-8. Missouri State is led on the field by outfielder Jake McCutcheon with a .369 batting average, 58 hits, 11 doubles, one triple, 12 home runs, 37 RBIs, and 43 runs scored. The Bears have three players with 12 home runs on the season as they lead the conference in long balls while being 10th in the nation in the stat. Missouri State also has four other batters hitting above .300, along with McCutcheon, with less than a month of the regular season left.
UE took a 2-1 series win against Indiana State at German American Bank Field in dramatic fashion over the weekend with two walk-off wins. Evansville did struggle in its midweek game at Western Kentucky, dropping its second game with the Hilltoppers 14-4. The Aces did have a bright spot on Tuesday evening as freshman infielder Drew McConnell hit his second home run of the season and first in two months for UE's first grand slam of the year. After Evansville loaded the bases early in the seventh inning, McConnell fought through a seven-pitch at-bat to put the ball past the right field bullpen at Nick Denes Field to score four runs.
The Aces' defense had a big weekend against the Sycamores at home. UE turned four double plays on Friday, April 18, in its 6-5 win over Indiana State. Evansville hadn't made four double plays on defense in a game since the 2022 season. The Aces had five double plays in total against the Sycamores and currently have 25 on the season. Indiana State is the MVC leader in double plays with 34, but was below their average of 2.5 in three games, as they only had one against UE.
Evansville's regular Friday night starter, LHP Kenton Deverman, has returned to form after some injury struggles early in the season. Over the month of April, the left-hander has averaged 5.2 innings pitched, seven hits, 2.6 earned runs, 0.6 walks, and five strikeouts a game. Against Indiana State last Thursday, Deverman had his second game of the year, not allowing a single walk to 28 batters. He now leads the MVC in strikeout-to-walk ratio (5.14) and walks per nine innings (1.32). Deverman is also nationally in the Top 30 in both categories, as he's 30th in strikeout-to-walk ratio and 11th in walks per nine innings. |

Aces women's soccer alum Georgia Katsonouri continues career professionally
|
|
LIMASSOL, Cyprus – University of Evansville alum Georgia Katsonouri (’24) has continued her career in goal at the highest level in her home country of Cyprus.
After a four-season career with the Purple Aces, goalkeeper Georgia Katsonouri is continuing her soccer journey with Apollon Ladies FC in Limassol, Cyprus. Katsonouri returned to her home country in the summer of 2024 after graduating from UE with a degree in exercise science. She joined Apollon in mid-July, helping the team to a 2024 Cypriot Super Cup win, the club’s 10th since its founding in 2007. Apollon Ladies FC also completed the treble in 2024, winning the Cypriot Championship, Cup, and Super Cup.
Along with her work on the field with Apollon Ladies FC, Katsonouri was called up to international play with the Cyprus National Team in February. With the national team in the UEFA Women’s Nations League, Katsonouri helped the team in two games against Malta and Georgia. Cyprus won both games by a goal each as Katsonouri got time in goal for the Whites and Blues. She will also be on the roster for Cyprus' upcoming matches in May and June.
Katsonouri has had to persevere during her time away from Evansville, as she came back from a chronic groin injury that happened when she was an Ace. She says, “I’ve been through a lot of pain and setbacks with my injury. But my perseverance and the fact that I was showing up every day, no matter how I felt, got me back on the field doing what I love the most and inspiring others.”
When not in goal, Katsonouri works for AZ Sports Scholarships, a Greek company that helps student-athletes earn scholarships to attend school in North America. She is the Cyprus college recruiting representative for AZ to help students combine their passion for sports with their studies.
In her four years with UE, Katsonouri played in seven games with five starts for 534 minutes in goal. Her career average at Evansville was 0.340 goals against, 3.86 saves, .931 save percentage and 10 shots faced a game. Katsonouri collected three shutouts during her college career and had an overall record of 2-1-2. |
