Our star-crossed teens, Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet, make both reckless and feckless choices about who to trust and discover the fruits of their “forbidden” love are not sweet at all. “For never was a story of more woe, than this of Juliet and her Romeo.”

* University of Evansville's School of Education Earns International Literacy Association National Recognition

Faculty in UE's School of Education engaged in a self-study to evaluate the effectiveness of their elementary and intermediate classroom programs in preparing future educators. The self-study was submitted to the International Literacy Association (ILA) for evaluation. The International Literacy Association National Recognition is awarded to outstanding licensure, certificate, and endorsement programs that prepare literacy professionals.

We are proud to announce that the University of Evansville has become the fifth higher education institution in the United States to earn ILA National Recognition for program alignment to rigorous ILA standards. Only fifteen universities in the United States have earned this distinction, and the University of Evansville is the first university in Indiana to qualify for this honor.

Earning ILA National Recognition demonstrates that UE's School of Education adheres to a rigorous set of standards for preparing literacy professionals, setting us apart from similar programs. This seal of approval, granted only by ILA, shows that the program at UE meets or exceeds ILA's high standards for excellence.

Special thanks are extended to our Dean, Dr. Andy Lampkins, and our Program Chair, Dr. Shari Millikan, for their enduring support and encouragement throughout this long process. We are thankful for your guidance and leadership!

* UE baseball falls in return to Evansville against Western Kentucky

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – In the first game at German American Bank Field since February 23, the University of Evansville baseball team didn’t keep up with one of the Top 15 offenses in the country.

The Purple Aces returned to their home field after 19 games away but didn’t quite find the advantage in a 13-3 loss to the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers. Three UE batters had a multi-hit night against WKU as shortstop Brodie Peart (Markham, Ontario) led the team, going 3-for-4 with one run scored. Catcher Matt Flaherty (Lake Zurich, Ill. / Bellarmine) was the only Evansville player to bring in multiple runs with two RBIs on two hits.

“It was a great crowd as we finally had a home game,” said Head Coach Wes Carroll after the loss. “We clearly didn’t compete on the mound enough to give us a chance. You have to credit WKU for how they played tonight. We are ready to get back to Valley play this weekend with competitive guys on the mound.”

The Aces had a strong first inning on Tuesday night as starting pitcher Drew Fieger (Fort Mitchell, Ky. / Lincoln Trails CC) struck out the side. UE also put into play the first two hits of the game with a single from first baseman Cal McGinnis (Kimberly, Wis. / Bradley) and a double from Peart.

But it was the Hilltoppers who struck first with three runs on five hits in the top of the second. Evansville had its third hit of the night in the bottom of the second as the offense went down in order in the third. Western Kentucky added three more runs in the top of the fourth as they again connected on five hits to make it a 6-0 game.

The Aces got two runners on base in the bottom of the fourth with two hits from Peart and left fielder Charlie Longmeier (Seymour, Ind. / Seymour HS). But both runners were stranded as the next three UE batters went down in order.

Evansville had another chance in the bottom of the sixth as McGinnis led off with a single to left and took second on a wild pitch. But he was soon caught out on a double play from Peart lining out to second base. The Hilltoppers had a solo run in the top of the seventh without a hit as they had two lead off walks followed by two sacrifice at-bats.

WKU continued to grow their lead in the top of the eighth with two more runs to make it 9-0 as the Aces were potentially staring down a run-rule game. But UE was able to break the shutout in the bottom of the eighth as they loaded the bases with two free passes and a Peart single to third. It was Flaherty’s second hit of the night into center field that officially ended the shutout as the single scored two runs. Evansville quickly added another run as second baseman Drew McConnell (Blue Springs, Mo. / Blue Springs HS) had a single to right field.

The Hilltoppers answered the Aces runs in the top of the ninth, scoring four more on four hits to make it a 10-run lead. UE had a promising start to the bottom of the ninth as pinch hitter Aaron Nehls (Evansville, Ind. / North HS) had a single to right field. But Western Kentucky got three outs on the next three at-bats to seal the 13-3 loss.

Evansville has its first true homestand of the season this week as they welcome the Valparaiso Beacons to Charles H. Braun Stadium over the weekend. The Aces are scheduled to play a three-game series with Valpo starting on Friday evening. First pitch from German American Bank Field is set for 6 p.m. on March 28.

* Baseball returns home on Tuesday after month-long road trip

The Purple Aces return home for the first time since February 23rd on Tuesday night for a midweek matchup with Western Kentucky. UE has played 21 of its 23 games so far in the 2025 season on the road to lead the Missouri Valley Conference in away contests. Evansville is just ahead of the UIC Flames who have had 20 games away from home this year. The 19-game road trip was the longest for the Aces since 2022 when they played 15 games away from Evansville from March 9 to March 29.

The Aces' first home opponent in over a month is the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers in their first of two games this season. The Hilltoppers have had a great start to the 2025 season with a 21-3 overall record as they come to the Braun on Tuesday night. But WKU struggled with the start of CUSA play over the weekend as they only took one of two games at Kennesaw State. Despite the two losses, the Hilltoppers are one of the best teams in the nation both at the plate and on the mound. Western Kentucky has the second ranked pitching staff in the country with an ERA of only 2.79 while the offense is third in doubles with 65 on the year. The Hilltoppers are also 11th in the country in batting average at .326.

UE had a successful start to MVC play with a 2-1 series win over the Murray State Racers. It was the first time in two seasons that Evansville began conference play with a series win as the Aces also opened Valley play against Murray State in 2024 at home. UE dropped all three games last year but made up for the sweep this past weekend. Evansville now leads the overall series with the Racers 46-26 while Murray has the slight edge in MVC games at 5-4 even though the Aces won their only postseason meeting during the 2023 MVC Tournament.

Evansville had its first game with multiple home runs this season on Saturday afternoon. Senior center fielder Ty Rumsey (Evansville, Ind. / North HS) had the first multi-home run game of his career as he launched two long balls in route to the Aces' 15-10 win over Murray State. Rumsey jump-started the Evansville offense in the top of the third with his first home run of the year and then hit a three-run bomb in the top of the seventh to tie the game at six runs each. Rumsey's two home runs were the Aces' first game with multiple home runs from one batter since the 2024 MVC Tournament.

Since returning from a brief injury senior infielder Cal McGinnis (Kimberly, Wis. / Bradley) has been an offensive force for the Aces. McGinnis is currently on a nine-game hitting streak to lead UE and is tied for the highest batting average on the team at .359 with Rumsey.  Also having a big offensive surge for Evansville is sophomore left fielder Charlie Longmeier (Seymour, Ind. / Seymour HS) after a big weekend against Murray State. In three games Longmeier went 7-for-12 (.583) with four doubles while bringing in three runs to now be second on the team in doubles with six and fourth in overall batting average at .286.
