Aces baseball to play three in two days at Samford
|
|
The Purple Aces had their only week playing two midweek games before heading to Birmingham this weekend. UE didn't have a victory in either game despite coming close at SIUE after leading 10-0 in the top of the 3rd. Evansville will have a quick chance to get its sixth win on Friday with a doubleheader at Samford. Due to projected weather in Birmingham on Saturday, the weekend series has been moved to a doubleheader on Friday starting at 1 p.m. and a single game on Sunday also at 1 p.m.
The three game series over the weekend will be UE's first visit to Samford in 15 years. The two teams last played a series against each other in March of 2010. The Bulldogs took the first two games while Evansville spoiled a potential sweep with an 8-4 win in the series finale. Before visiting Samford in 2010 the Aces had been to Birmingham three other times to play the UAB Blazers.
Senior right fielder Harrison Taubert (Casper, Wyo. / Northeast CC) had a breakout week at the plate for UE against Missouri. Taubert led the Aces at the plate as he went .500 against Missouri including five multi-base hits. He followed up his big weekend at Missouri with another .500 weekend at Central Arkansas going 7-for-14. Taubert also had Evansville's first inside-the-park home run in two years at Southeast Missouri on the 11th. Taubert hit a ball that bounced off the wall in left field at Capaha Field and was fast enough to get all the way home as the Redhawk defense tried to get the ball back to the base paths.
Sophomore left-hander Kevin Reed earned UE its first Missouri Valley Conference weekly honor on Tuesday. The southpaw was named the MVC Pitcher of the Week after throwing his second shutout of the season at Central Arkansas. Reed helped lead Evansville to its first series win pitching seven innings of shutout ball, scattering three hits, and striking out six batters. |

UE baseball not able to hold off a SIUE comeback
|
|
EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – The University of Evansville baseball team came just short of a bounce-back game in its second midweek contest falling in the bottom of the ninth 12-11 to the SIUE Cougars.
The Purple Aces scored 10 runs in the first three innings of Wednesday’s contest. But with only one run scored in the last two-thirds of the game, UE couldn’t shut down SIUE’s offense. The Cougars put together three straight hits in the bottom of the ninth to score the winning run, handing Evansville its second loss in as many days. Third baseman Drew McConnell (Blue Springs, Mo. / Blue Springs HS) and catcher Matt Flaherty (Lake Zurich, Ill. / Bellarmine) led the Aces on offense with two hits each and a combined seven RBIs.
“We didn’t do enough on the back end of a double midweek to secure the win,” said Head Coach Wes Carroll following the game. “We’re going to have to fight as a program to get back in the win column this weekend.”
UE had another quick lead in its second-midweek game in as many days. Even though center fielder Ty Rumsey (Evansville, Ind. / North HS) struck out to begin the game Evansville soon had the bases loaded without a hit. Two walks and an error with two outs on the board was the situation when Flaherty stepped up to the plate. He delivered for the Aces with a single to third base that brought home two runs.
The two runners still on base for UE after the single moved into scoring position during the next at-bat on a wild pitch from SIUE’s starter. First baseman Kevin McCormick then added UE’s second hit of the day with a double to third, scoring Flaherty and left fielder Charlie Longmeier to make it a 4-0 Evansville lead after the half inning. After a lead off double for the Cougars the Aces defense was able to get three straight outs, stranding the runner at second.
UE began the second inning similar to its first with two batters taking base without a hit. McConnell connected on his first of two hits Wednesday afternoon to score a run for a 5-0 Evansville lead. The Aces quickly added to their lead when Flaherty doubled to score two more runs and put himself along with designated hitter Evan Waggoner (Bedford, Ind. / North Bedford Lawrence HS) into scoring position. Waggoner crossed home for UE two batters later as third baseman Ben Stuart (Mason, Ohio / William Mason HS) reached on an error. Evansville’s third out came just after, but the Aces now had an 8-0 lead.
SIUE didn’t answer in the bottom of the inning as UE added another two runs in the top of the third. Rumsey avenged his earlier strikeout with a single to third base. He then quickly stole both second and third during right fielder Harrison Taubert’s (Casper, Wyo. / Northeast CC) at-bat. While Taubert didn’t connect McConnell had his second hit of the afternoon to drive Rumsey in. McConnell was only on base momentarily as Waggoner swung on the first pitch and doubled down the left field line, scoring the 10th Evansville run of the game.
But the Aces offense grew cold over the next three innings as the Cougars began their comeback. SIUE added eight runs in the middle frames making it only a two-run UE lead going into the top of the seventh. Evansville was able to add another run in the seventh as the first three batters reached base. With the bases loaded McConnell hit a sacrifice fly to right scoring Stuart for the 11th Aces run and the second out. Waggoner ground out in the next at-bat ending the top of the seventh.
UE held the Cougars scoreless in both the seventh and eighth innings. But Evansville also didn’t find another run in the eighth or the top of the ninth. The Aces headed into the final frame of the game still holding a three-run lead. SIUE got two runners on base and scored on a sacrifice fly early in the bottom of the ninth. Three straight hits after the sac fly gave the Cougars the win as they scored three more runs for the 12-11 final.
UE gets a day off before returning to the diamond on Friday afternoon for a doubleheader with the Samford Bulldogs. The first of the two games on March 14 begins at 1 p.m. in Birmingham. |

UE women's basketball begins the postseason with No. 7 UIC
|
|
After ending the regular season with three straight games at home, the Purple Aces won't be traveling far to begin the postseason. UE makes its way downtown to the Ford Center for the 2025 Credit Union 1 Missouri Valley Conference Women's Basketball Tournament. While the tournament is in town, since the Ford Center is not Evansville's home court it is a neutral site game. But the Aces are one of only two MVC teams to have played in the Ford Center during the regular season as UE opened conference play with fourth-seeded Drake in the arena back in December.
UE enters the 2025 Credit Union 1 Missouri Valley Conference Women's Basketball Tournament as the 10th seed after finishing the season with a 3-17 conference record. Evansville has been the 10th seed in the MVC Tournament six times and got a dramatic win as the 10th seed during the 2016 MVC Championship. The Aces were able to overcome the Illinois State Redbirds in overtime with a 61-59 victory. UE's victory in 2016 is one of only 18 MVC Tournament games to be decided by one possession.
Evansville will face the UIC Flames in the first round of the tournament as the Flames hold the seventh seed. The two teams have never played one another in the MVC Tournament since UIC joined the league in the 2022-23 season. The Flames did take both of the regular season meetings and have evened the overall series between the two at 10 wins each. The Aces hope the adage it's hard to beat a team three times in one season holds true on Thursday night to retake the series lead with UIC. The Flames ended the regular season against Drake (21-10, 15-5 MVC) on Saturday, falling short in front of a home crowd 69-49 as graduate forward Keimari Rimmer scored 13 points and grabbed a team-leading eight rebounds.
Freshman Camryn Runner (Cicero, Ind. / Hamilton Heights HS) was named the MVC Freshman of the Year in a vote of league coaches, sports information directors, and media members on Wednesday. She is the fourth Purple Ace to receive the award and the first in five seasons. Runner had UE's best offensive season from a freshman since Sara Dickey with 473 points on the season. She has scored in double digits in all but two games this season for Evansville to average 15.3 points a game. Runner also had one of the best freshman seasons for the Aces helping with the ball, recording 87 assists, a number not hit since the 2013-14 season.
Sophomore forward Maggie Hartwig (Sauk City, Wis. / Sauk Prairie HS) ended the regular season hitting a major milestone in 33 minutes of play against Belmont. Hartwig became the first underclassman to hit 500 career rebounds since program-leading rebounder Christy Greis did so in the 1990-91 season. With 276 rebounds after the regular season Hartwig is having the program's sixth-best season under the glass. She would need 13 rebounds in the postseason to move into the top five, passing forward Shayla McKibbon-Puelston's 288 rebound season in 1998-99. |

Aces sweep doubleheader at LIndenwood
|
|
ST. CHARLES, Mo. – Wednesday’s doubleheader at Lindenwood saw the pitching staff for the University of Evansville shine, limiting the Lions to just two runs as the Purple Aces took both contests.
Game 1 – UE 3, Lindenwood 1
Jess Willsey belted a 3-run home run in the top of the first and that would be enough as the Purple Aces opened the day with a 3-1 win over the Lions. Niki Bode reached on a 1-out walk in the first while Morgan Adams followed with a double. Next up was Willsey who put UE on the board with the homer.
Bode picked up a hit in the second while Eliza Piggott added a hit in the third, but the lead remained at 3-0. After recording three hits in the first four frames, Lindenwood scored their first run in the bottom half of the fifth.
From that point on, the Aces pitching held strong to clinch the 3-1 win. Gracie Hollingsworth pitched five innings in the start with one run scoring on five hits.
