* Aces tripped up at UIC

CHICAGO – Gabriel Pozzato scored 23 points while Tayshawn Comer added 22 on Saturday to pace the University of Evansville men’s basketball team in an 82-77 setback at UIC inside Credit Union 1 Arena.

Pozzato connected on nine of his 20 field goal tries while picking up six boards.  Comer added seven boards and seven assists to his tally.  Connor Turnbull added 18 points.

“I thought our guys played with good energy and it really showed early in the second half.  At the end of the day it came down to rebounding and UIC did a great job from the beginning,” UE head coach David Ragland said.  “Down the stretch, every time we needed a big stop, we just could not get it.”

Converting their first three attempts, the Purple Aces held an early 8-5 lead.  Tayshawn Comer scored six of those points.  UIC got things going and took its first lead of 9-8 less than four minutes into the contest.  Two minutes later, the Flames extend the lead to 14-10.  Evansville countered by scoring nine in a row to go up 19-14 as a step back triple by Comer highlighted the stretch.

As the half approached the midway point, Gabriel Pozzato’s 3-pointer put the Aces back up by five – 22-17.  Over the next four minutes, UIC took control as they scored 14 in a row to take their largest lead at 31-17.  The Flames knocked down five of their six shot attempts to go back in front.  Their advantage reached 10 points in the final minutes before UE cut the deficit to eight at halftime – 39-31.  Making the difference in the period was points off turnovers as the Flames finished with a 9-0 advantage.

Pozzato opened the second half with a triple before Comer added a bucket to cut the deficit to three.  With 15:26 remaining, a layup put the Flames back up by six at 47-41.  Just as UIC did in the first half, Evansville made a big run in the second.  Helped by triples from Josh Hughes and Comer, the Aces scored ten in a row to go up 51-47 inside of the 13-minute mark.  Tanner Cuff had the floater that put Evansville back on top.

The lead for the Aces reached five points at 55-50 and the squad continued to hold a 60-57 edge inside of 10 minutes remaining.  UIC fought back once again, outscoring UE by an 18-2 margin while taking a 75-62 lead with 2:34 on the clock.  During the stretch, the Aces missed eight of their nine field goal attempts.

In the final minute, the Aces did their best to claw back as a triple by Cuff cut the deficit all the way down to five points and that would be the final as the Flames hung on for the 82-77 win.  The Flames were led by Modestas Kancleris who recorded 18 points and 10 boards.  Ahmad Henderson II and Sasa Ciani finished with 13 apiece.

Evansville completed the day shooting 46.7% while the Flames finished at 40.6%.  UIC outrebounded the Aces by a 38-28 tally.

On Wednesday, the Aces wrap up the home schedule with a 7 p.m. game against Drake.

* Softball splits Sunday contests

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Sunday’s contests saw the University of Evansville softball team open the day with a 9-5 loss to Western Michigan before the bats came alive in a 14-2 win over UT Martin at Tri-State Orthpaedics Field at Cooper Stadium.

Game 1 – Western Michigan 9, UE 5

Evansville scored three runs in the top of the first and two more in the second to take a 5-2 lead, but it was Western Michigan plating the final seven runs to take a 9-5 victory in Sunday’s opener.  Five walks saw the Purple Aces reach base while Taylor Howe and Niki Bode each hit a sacrifice fly to take the early lead.

Western Michigan scored twice in the top of the second, but UE countered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame.  Howe belted a 2-run home run to extend the lead back to three runs.  The Broncos inched their way closer with four runs in the next three innings to take a 6-5 edge.  They put things out of reach with a 3-run home run in the top of the seventh.

Howe led the way with three RBI while Jess Willsey scored twice.  Kate Ridgway made the start, allowing five runs in three innings.  Cassidy Gall suffered the loss, giving up four runs in 3 1/3 innings of work.  Elle Jarrett recorded the final two outs.

Game 2 – UE 14, UT Martin 2

Game two saw the bats come alive with 14 runs, five home runs and 11 hits as the Aces defeated UT Martin by a final score of 14-2.

Just as they did in game one, the Aces jumped out to the early lead, scoring three times in the bottom half of the first.  After Taylor Howe scored on a passed ball, Niki Bode notched a 2-run single to cap a 3-run inning.  In the second, Jess Willsey hit a solo homer to push the lead to four.

UT Martin got on the board with a pair of runs in the top of the third before the Aces regained control.  Niki Bode hit a solo shot before Morgan Adams followed with a 2-run homer.  The long balls continued to fly in the next frame as homers from Howe and Callie Meinel extended the lead even more.

In total, the Aces scored seven runs in the fourth before completing the day with a 14-2 victory in five innings.  Bode and Donohoo both recorded three hits apiece with both scoring twice.  Bode added three RBI while Howe and Adams registered two apiece.  Gracie Hollingsworth went the full five innings on the way to her third win of the season.  She gave up two runs on three hits.

UE is back in action on Monday to face Western Michigan at 12:30 p.m. before taking on the Skyhawks at 3 p.m. at Cooper Stadium.

* UE women's basketball falls at UIC

CHICAGO – The University of Evansville women’s basketball team struggled to keep possession of the ball in a 71-54 loss to the UIC Flames.

The Purple Aces got off to a slow start at Credit Union 1 Arena and didn’t find their way back on Sunday afternoon. UE outshot UIC on the floor by over 2% but a -14 turnover margin kept Evansville from catching up with the Flames. Sophomore forward Maggie Hartwig (Sauk City, Wis. / Sauk Prairie HS) again led the Aces on the floor with her ninth double-double of the season and her second in a row.

Sunday’s game began with the teams’ trading shots as the lead changed three times in just over two minutes. UIC tried to pull away with a short run, but UE kept coming back to keep it within two points before the media timeout. The Flames were able to pull away in the final three and a half minutes of the quarter on a 10-point lead to put Evansville down by 10.

The Aces offense got going again a minute into the second quarter on a jump shot from freshman guard Kaiden Kreinhagen (Indianapolis / North Central HS). UE went back and forth with UIC for four minutes in the quarter. Both teams then struggled to complete a shot through the middle of the second as no one scored for over three minutes. Evansville broke the cold snap at the line for a 7-9 run to end the first half. The Aces headed into the locker room trailing by 15 in Chicago.

The Flames had the hot hand to start the third quarter with four straight points. UE got back into the scoring column with back-to-back layups from Hartwig and a trip to the line for senior guard Júlia Palomo (La Seu d’Urgell, Spain).  The game returned to a back-and-forth pace for just under three minutes. UIC eclipsed the 20-point lead mark with two straight threes and a layup. Evansville put together a strong final minute and a half of the third, scoring six points in that time. But they still faced a 21-point deficit with only 10 minutes left to play.

The Aces were able to take their momentum from the end of the third quarter into the beginning of the fourth. UE scored six points in under two minutes while not letting the Flames get more than a layup. UIC was able to respond with just under eight minutes to go, pushing their lead back out to 21. A five-point run for Evansville got the margin back under 20 but the team was only able to match the Flames made field goals instead of putting together another run. Hartwig made the last layup of the game putting the Aces over 50 points in the 71-54 loss.

Hartwig and Runner were again the lone double-digit scorers for UE with 19 and 13 points respectively. Palomo led the team in assists and steals through 40 minutes, helping on four baskets and getting two takeaways. While Hartwig also led on defense with 10 rebounds as Runner was the next closest with seven boards.

Evansville will play its final road game of the season next week. The Aces face off with the Northern Iowa Panthers for the only time this year on Thursday night. Tip-off from the McLeod Center in Cedar Falls is set for 6 p.m. on Thursday, February 27.

* Aces baseball splits doubleheader with USI

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Evansville baseball team picked up its first win of 2025 after splitting a doubleheader at home with the Southern Indiana Screaming Eagles.

It was a tale of two teams on Sunday afternoon for the Purple Aces as the offense struggled in game one but came alive in the second game of the day. UE only had two hits and one run in a 9-1 loss to start the doubleheader against USI. But in the second game, Evansville connected on 14 hits for 13 runs in a 13-0 run-rule victory of the Screaming Eagles. It was the Aces' first win of the year after dropping close games to Little Rock and Lipscomb in the first week of the season.

“I’m proud of the bounce-back win today,” said Head Coach Wes Carroll following the doubleheader. “You have to credit USI’s starter [RHP Blake Kimball] in game one as we couldn’t get anything going offensively. The second game was a special outing from Kevin Reed in a much-needed spot.

We got a spark offensively from [Charlie] Longmeier and [Drew] McConnell that created a big fourth inning. Now we have to continue to grow as a team as we go on the road for our next 18 games.”

Game 1

It was a slow start for both teams on Sunday as neither team had a hit in the first two innings and only one strikeout picked up by UE starter Kenton Deverman (Dardenne Prairie, Mo. Fort Zumwalt West HS). It was the Screaming Eagles who broke the 0-0 tie with three hits and two runs in the top of the third. Evansville responded with two runners on in the bottom of the inning but didn’t find a hit to bring anyone home.

USI extended its lead to three in the top of the fifth with a single and a double. The Aces got their first hit of the day in the bottom of the fifth as junior third baseman Drew Howard (Ferdinand, Ind. / Forest Park HS) doubled down the third base line. But UE stranded Howard and right fielder Harrison Taubert (Casper, Wyo. / Northeast CC) as it stayed 3-0.

Evansville threatened on the basepaths in the bottom of the seventh as two batters were hit by pitches and center fielder Ty Rumsey (Evansville, Ind. / North HS) put a single into right field. But as had become a common occurrence over the first week of action the Aces stranded all three runners going into the eighth.

The Eagles took full control of the game in the eighth inning. USI went through their lineup a full-time in the half inning, connecting on five hits while scoring six runs. The Eagles added their final hit of the first game in the top of the ninth while all three of their other batters were struck out by redshirt junior RHP Parker MacCauley (Paducah, Ky. Tennessee Tech).

UE was able to end the shutout attempt by USI in the bottom of the ninth. Designated hitter Matt Flaherty (Lake Zurich, Ill. Bellarmine) scored Evansville’s lone run on a fielder’s choice after three straight walks for the offense. The Aces didn’t bring another runner home as a strikeout to second baseman Cal McGinnis (Kimberly, Wis. / Bradley) ended the game.

Deverman was credited with the loss for UE, pitching seven innings with 10 hits, six runs, one walk, and three strikeouts. Also pitching for Evansville in relief was freshman Jack Clevidence (Ankeny, Iowa / Ankeny HS) for 0.2 innings and MacCauley for 1.1 innings.

Game 2

The start of the second game seemed like it would be similar to the first as USI’s leadoff batter singled through the right side. The Aces' defense held strong to strand two runners and took the Eagles down in order in the second inning. UE’s bats got going in the bottom of the second with two singles and a walk but didn’t score a run.

Neither team had a hit in the third inning as starting pitcher Kevin Reed (Martinsville, Ind. / Martinsville HS) struck out two Eagles back-to-back. USI threatened to start the fourth with a double but two more strikeouts from Reed ended the half-inning. Evansville had a monster fourth inning with 17 at-bats, coming one shy of going through the lineup twice.

In those 17 at-bats the Aces connected on nine hits while taking 14 bases. UE scored 11 runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, a feat not done by Evansville since 2022 against Austin Peay with 12 runs scored in an inning. Of the Aces' nine batters only two had multiple hits as Longmeier and McConnell connected both times at the plate.

The Eagles had to use four separate pitchers in the bottom of the fourth inning. Two putouts and one strikeout between eight batters had UE up 11-0 at the end of the fourth. USI went down in order to start the fifth while McGinnis had his second hit of the day but was put out on the base paths.

Evansville added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth after another three up and three down inning on defense. Two singles and a walk for the Aces had three runners on the bases. Sophomore catcher Kaleb Wilkey (Manhattan, Ill. Lincoln-Way West HS) and McConnell scored to give UE a 13-0 lead.

Up by over 10 runs Evansville only needed to keep the Eagles from scoring three runs to end the game in the middle of the seventh. USI got a lead-off single, but the Aces locked in and got three straight outs to run-rule the Eagles 13-0. Reed earned his first win of the season on the mound, pitching all seven innings for three hits, two walks, and nine strikeouts.

Between the two games, Rumsey and Longmeier led the offense with three hits each. Three other UE players had two hits on the day while McConnell led Evansville in RBI’s bringing in four runs. On defense, first baseman Kevin McCormick (Orland Park, Ill. St. Laurence HS) led the team with 11 putouts while Wilkey and catcher Evan Waggoner (Bedford, Ind. Bedford North Lawrence HS) had nine and seven putouts each.

UP NEXT

The Aces hit the road for the next month after two games at The Braun. UE begins its month-long road trip with a midweek game at Kentucky on Tuesday, February 25. First pitch from Kentucky Proud Park is set for 3 p.m. CT on Tuesday.

* Aces track and field to compete at the John Gartland Invitational

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- The University of Evansville track and field team heads to a Missouri Valley Conference home track before the MVC Indoor Championships.

After a weekend with only their top performers competing, the Purple Aces full track and field team returns to action on Saturday morning. UE is part of the John Gartland Invitational hosted by the Indiana State Sycamores, returning to the meet hosted by a Valley competitor after four seasons away. Evansville has attended some of the other indoor meets the Sycamores host over the past four seasons including the Blue-White Classic and the Indiana State Open.

The field for the John Gartland Invitational is made up of 14 different teams including three other Division I teams. Indiana State is the only other MVC team participating in the meet a week before the MVC Indoor Championships in Chicago. But the Aces will see some familiar faces on Saturday including Saint Louis, UIndy, Hanover, Marian (Ind.), and Vincennes, who all competed in other meets with UE. Evansville will also compete against Division I Northern Illinois, Anderson (Ind.), Berea, Brescia, UHSP, Rose-Hulman, and Wabash.

Last week the Aces only had 12 athletes compete at the Indoor Music City Challenge hosted by the Vanderbilt Commodores. Sophomore sprinter Taylor Johnson (Evansville, Ind. / Reitz HS) and sophomore distance runner Rafael Rodriguez (Sergovia, Spain) set two new program records among the nation's best last week in the women's 200-meter dash and the men's mile. Rodriguez broke his program record from the previous indoor season by just under five seconds running the mile in 4:08.87 and Johnson broke her record from earlier in the season at Indiana by completing the race in 25.20 seconds, eight-hundredths of a second faster than her previous record. * Hartwig sets season-high shooting percentage at Valparaiso

VALPARAISO, Ind. – The University of Evansville women’s basketball team got back within single digits in the third quarter but couldn’t hang on for its first road victory in a 76-55 loss to the Valparaiso Beacons.

The Purple Aces offense struggled early and late in the game at Valparaiso after a promising third-quarter comeback. UE outscored the Beacons 20-13 in the third but only had eight points in the final 10 minutes on Friday night as the comeback slipped away. Evansville did excel under the glass in the loss, grabbing 38 rebounds to the Beacons' eight.

It was a fairly even start to Friday’s game as the lead was traded four times in the first three minutes. The Aces kept things close in the first half of the quarter as Hartwig had seven of their first 10 points. But after the media timeout midway through the first, Valparaiso pulled away on an eight-point run to take an 11-point lead. UE offense went cold with just under 2:30 on the clock as they headed into the second quarter down 24-14.

Evansville's offense continued to struggle early in the second quarter, not scoring for almost the first three minutes. With the Aces' offensive drought, the Beacons added to their lead to make it 17 points early in the game. UE was able to find a response in the final three minutes of the first half, keeping Valpo scoreless from the floor for four and a half minutes. Evansville got the game within 11 points on an eight-point run, but a late foul let the Beacons bring their lead back up to 13.

The second half started similarly to the first as the teams traded baskets until Valpo put together a brief four-point run. After the short run ,the Aces were able to take over in the third quarter, outscoring the Beacons 20-13 with a 12 to five run. Despite trailing by almost 20 points in the first half, UE went into the final 10 minutes only down by six.

But a cold start to the fourth quarter had Valpo back to a double-figure lead as Evansville didn’t score until there was 6:38 on the clock. Hartwig broke the early scoring drought with her third trey of the night. But the Beacons responded with an 11-point run to take a 20-point lead with under five minutes to go. The Aces were able to add five points in the final four and a half minutes but ultimately fell to Valpo 76-55 at the ARC.

Hartwig had another big game against the Beacons for UE, leading the team with 24 points. She also had a season-high performance in terms of efficiency shooting 62.5% from the floor. Evansville’s only other player in double figures was freshman guard Camryn Runner (Cicero, Ind. / Hamilton Heights HS) with 15 points. Hartwig also led the Aces on defense with 14 rebounds for her eighth double-double of the season.

UE continues its three-game road swings with another visit to Chicago this season. Evansville was in the Windy City right before Christmas to end the non-conference portion of the schedule at Loyola. This time the Aces will be visiting the west side of town to take on the UIC Flames on Sunday afternoon. Tip-off from Credit Union 1 Arena on the 23rd is set for 2 p.m.

* UE baseball plays first home games of 2025 against USI

The Aces will make their home field debut on Sunday afternoon after beginning the season on the road. UE will play two games against crosstown rivals Southern Indiana at German American Bank Field at Charles H. Braun Stadium in a double header. The two teams were originally supposed to play a three-game series at both home fields. But snow and cold temperatures canceled one game and moved the other two.

UE won't get used to being home after this weekend. Evansville will hit the road for the next 18 games on its schedule. The Aces don't return to the Braun until over a month later for a midweek game with the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers on March 25.

Southern Indiana comes into Sunday's doubleheader on a high note, taking three of four from Alabama State University. USI took the opener 3-1; split a doubleheader on day two, winning 12-8 and losing 9-2; and won the series with a 15-13 victory on the final day. USI is currently being led by senior centerfielder/leadoff hitter Khi Holiday who in the three wins, started the game with a hit, a stolen base, and a run scored. He batted .444 with eight runs scored, six RBIs, and six stolen bases in USI's first four games.

Evansville will hope to find some home cooking this weekend after opening the season with four losses on the road. UE came close to earning its first win at Lipscomb heading into the bottom of the 9th leading by six runs. But a Bison comeback in the 9th forced extra innings where the Aces fell 11-10 in the 13th.

The Aces last gave up a six-run lead in one inning almost 10 years ago in their 2017 opening weekend at Central Arkansas. After holding a 9-0 advantage in the 6th, UE gave up three runs in the 6th and 6 runs in the 9th to go into extra innings against the Bears. The Bears would win the game in the bottom of the 10th.

During her sophomore season, Lindner was second on the team with 17 saves, while facing 67 shots overall.

She played twelve games for the regional league team in the Regionalliga Südwest, another German soccer league, last season and was also in goal in the two promotion games to the 2nd league.

Of her signing, Lindner says she’s looking forward to the new challenge: "For me, the move to TSG is a great step in my career. In addition to the excellent training conditions, I am looking forward to new impulses in training and the opportunity to be on the pitch with top-class teammates every day."

At the midway point of the season, TSG Hoffenheim is in the middle of the league standings in sixth place. The team’s highest finish since joining the highest level of Bundesliga was third place in the 2019-20 and 2020-21 seasons.
