The University of Evansville Theatre announces the final installment of the 2023–2024 season with WAITING FOR LEFTY, by Clifford Odets. This production opens at 7:30 p.m., Friday, April 12, in Shanklin Theatre. Additional performances are at 7:30 p.m., on April 13, 18, 19, 20 and at 2:00 p.m., on April 21. Inspired by true events of a 1934 New York taxicab strike, this fictional retelling creates a powerful mosaic of the trials and tribulations of the working class. First produced in 1935, this play made a sensation of its playwright, who became the theatrical conscience of a generation, and this work remains one of the most celebrated and significant plays of the American Theatre. With the fight for living wages and safe, equitable workplaces continuing to cause political debates, this seminal play illustrates the power of individual protest and the right to reform. Grab your picket sign and get ready to march!

WAITING FOR LEFTY is directed by Visiting Assistant Professor Stacey Yen. Adult ticket prices are $20 and $18 for senior adults, UE employees, and non-UE students. UE students may obtain one free ticket to each production online or in person at the ticket office in Hyde Hall. In addition, UE Theatre is excited to continue their “Pay What You Will” initiative again this second season. Every Thursday evening performance in Shanklin Theatre is available for any person to pay any price that best fits their budget. 4. An ES Alumni Panel Discussion in Koch Center 100 starting at 4pm.

Sarah Frey is the founder and CEO of Frey Farms, a Certified Woman-Owned Agribusiness headquartered in southern Illinois. Frey Farms is a leading US grower, shipper and marketer of fresh fruits and vegetables.

Sarah has been described by the New York Times as America’s Pumpkin Queen. Frey Farms is best known as being America’s largest producer of fresh pumpkins; but watermelons are, in fact, their top commodity. Sarah founded Tsamma (sah-mah) watermelon juice, which was the first watermelon juice distributed nationally.

She is also the author of the best-selling book, The Growing Season: How I Built a New Life – and Saved an American Farm. Guests are invited to bring their copy to have signed after the event. Sarah will also have 25 copies of her book for free, available on a first-come, first-served basis. 

Sarah’s entrepreneurial spirit was nurtured at the young age of eight, while accompanying her mother on a summer produce route selling direct to grocery retailers in southern Illinois. The summer she turned 16, Sarah took over the produce route and expanded it from 12 independent grocery stores to over 150 - then purchased her family’s small 100-acre farm. She ran her full-time business while attending high school and college simultaneously. At 19, Sarah negotiated with Wal-Mart, the nation’s largest retailer, turning her vision into reality with an expansive growth into retail grocery that enabled her to bring her four older brothers back to the family farm and into a now-flourishing business.

LISTENER-BASED ANALYSIS OF ELECTROACOUSTIC MUSIC: A SELECTED CHRONOLOGY OF METHODS

Charles du Preez is a clarinetist and bass clarinetist hailing from rural Nebraska, and currently serves as Assistant Professor of Clarinet at the University of Evansville in Indiana.

He holds a DMA  from the University of Arizona and an MFA from the California Institute of the Arts. His DMA lecture recital and accompanying 222-page document “Listener-Based Analysis of Electroacoustic Music” includes a select chronology of analytical methods of electroacoustic music and the analyses of two pieces for electroacoustic bass clarinet.

Performance highlights include playing with the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra, Tucson Symphony, New Mexico Philharmonic, Festival de Opera Zapopan (MX), San Luis Potosi Opera Festival (MX); non-Classical activities include playing in Evansville-based groups The Ratskeller Band (a German polka band), The Dixielanders, and as alto sax in The Temple Aires Jazz Band.

Since the 1960s, many distinct methods of electroacoustic music analysis have been created, including spectromorphology, sonograms, and listener-based methods. However, no standardized method of analysis has been agreed upon. This lecture chronicles a history of methods of electroacoustic music analysis and demonstrates the use of different methods in the investigation of various pieces, including one for electroacoustic bass clarinet.

The Reeves Foundation was established in 1966 under the terms of the Last Will and Testament of Mrs. Isabel B. Reeves, wife of Judge Ollie C. It was the desire of the donor, Margery Florence Kahn, that her scholarship be awarded to "dedicated and conscientious students who exhibit a true passion for their chosen fields of study, and who, in the opinion of the members of the University of Evansville faculty, are likely to bring the same enthusiasm into the performance of their jobs or the practice of the professions which they will pursue following graduation."

All University of Evansville full-time undergraduate students who will be juniors or seniors in the 2024-25 academic year may apply. An essay of about 300 words must accompany the application along with two to five faculty recommendation letters.

The Margaret E. Schriefer Liberal Arts Scholarship was established for the University of Evansville in loving memory of Margaret E. Schriefer. This scholarship will be awarded annually to a deserving student, covering full tuition, books, supplies, materials, and laboratory fees. To be considered for this scholarship, students must meet the following qualifications:

• Must be enrolled at the University of Evansville and have a major of study in Literature, English, Music or Theatre.
• Must be a natural-born citizen of the United States of America with no prior criminal record, other than minor traffic violations.
• Must be a free and accepted Mason in good standing in a local lodge under the authority of the Grand Lodge of its state, or be the descendant, sibling, or nephew/niece of a Master Mason in good standing in his respective lodge under the authority of the Grand Lodge of its respective state. If the related Mason shall not be living at the time of the student’s consideration for this scholarship, a letter shall be obtained from the Lodge of the related Mason to the effect that the related Mason was in good standing at the time of his death. 
• Must have and maintain a "C" average

UE students seeking financial aid or intending to use loan funds for summer courses at UE should complete a Summer Financial Aid Application and return it to the Office of Student Financial Services (Olmsted 105) however is most convenient by April 25, 2024. The application will allow our office to assess your financial aid and loan eligibility.

Work-Study:

On-campus jobs are available for continuing UE students during the summer. You do not need to be eligible for need-based Federal Work-Study during the academic year in order to apply. You may also apply regardless of your enrollment in summer courses. Applications will be available within the Student Employment area of Self-Service.

Playing as an individual, Daniil Romashkin led the University of Evansville men’s golf team at the Tennessee State University Big Blue Intercollegiate at Hermitage Golf Course.

Romashkin tied for 10th place with a 3-round score of 212.  He posted a 1-over 72 in the final round to lead the Purple Aces.  His top effort was a 3-under 68 in Monday’s second round of play.  Andres Rodriguez and Nicholas Gushrowski recorded final tallies of 215 to tie for 18th place.  Gushrowski had Evansville’s low round on Tuesday, carding an even 71.  Rodriguez finished at 2-over on Tuesday with his low round being a 69 in round two.

Caleb Wassmer tied for the 26th spot with a 217.  Wassmer posted a 76 on Monday following scores of 71 and 70 to open the tournament.  Michael Ikejiani matched Wassmer’s final round score with a 76.  His 220 was good for a 33rd-place tie.

Carson Parker and Isaac Rohleder also registered totals of 76 in the final round.  Parker completed the tournament with a 224, tying him for 45th while Rohleder was 61st with a 228.

UE tied for 6th in the final team standings with a score of 876.  The Aces matched Florida A&M’s 3-round total.  Samford and Belmont finished tied atop the leaderboard with scores of 846.  Michael Senn of Belmont finished with a 6-stroke victory in the individual standings.  His 13-under 200 bested Alex Eickhoff of SIUE by six strokes.

The season comes to a close with the Missouri Valley Conference Championship, which will be played April 21-23 in Sun Beach, Mo.

After a slow start, the University of Evansville baseball team caught fire on Tuesday afternoon en route to a 15-5 run-rule victory over the homestanding Butler Bulldogs at Bulldog Park in Indianapolis, Indiana.

“Today wasn’t the prettiest performance we have had all year, especially early, but the guys found a way to grind out a nice road victory today,” said UE head coach Wes Carroll.  “Obviously, Kip Fougerousse had a monster day today in the middle of the order, and when he is going well, our offense can put up runs in a hurry.  But, we had a lot of guys step up with multi-hit games today, which was great to see.

“I also thought that we got some great outings on the mound from guys like Jace Kressin, Max Hansmann, and Jakob Meyer, which was huge.  We need those guys to pitch like they did today down the stretch, because if they can, we can really get rolling.”

Butler jumped out early with two runs in the first inning, before UE took advantage of some wildness from the Bulldogs to plate three runs in the top of the second inning on only one hit to grab a 3-2 lead.

The lead would be short-lived, as the first five Butler hitters in the second inning reached base, plating two runs and loading the bases with no one out to grab a 4-3 lead.  At that point, Kressin came out of the UE bullpen and recorded three-straight outs against the three, four and five-hole hitters in the Butler lineup to turn the tide and give Evansville the momentum.

The Purple Aces quickly retook the lead at 5-4 in the third inning on an RBI double by senior shortstop Simon Scherry and an RBI single by junior outfielder Harrison Taubert.  Evansville then added two more runs on a Scherry RBI single and a double-steal in which Scherry stole second, and freshman second baseman Brodie Peart stole home to move the lead to 7-4.

Butler would scratch across a run against Kressin in the fourth inning on a balk, but then sophomore reliever Max Hansmann came on with two men on and no one out, and got a strikeout and two infield ground outs to end the threat and keep UE in the lead at 7-5.

Fougerousse then added a solo home run in the sixth inning, before the Purple Aces erupted for seven runs in the seventh inning to enact the mercy rule.  Taubert launched a three-run home run in the frame for UE, while Peart and graduate catcher Brendan Hord added RBI singles, and Scherry and graduate third baseman Brent Widder drove in runs on RBI ground outs.

Fougerousse led UE offensively by going 4-for-5 with a home run and four runs scored.  Taubert went 2-for-5 with a home run and four RBI, while Scherry added two hits, three runs scored and three RBI.  Peart and Hord also had two-hit days for UE.

Kressin (1-0) earned the victory, the first in his Purple Aces’ career, by scattering a run on a hit in 2.0-plus innings of work, while striking out three.  Both Hansmann and Meyer each tossed 2.0 scoreless, hitless innings on the mound, while combining to strike out seven men out of the UE bullpen.

With the victory, Evansville improves to 15-17 overall, as the Purple Aces have now won five out of the last six contests.  Butler, meanwhile, drops to 13-17 overall with the loss.  Evansville will now return home to German American Bank Field at Charles H. Braun Stadium to host red-hot Illinois State (17-11, 7-2 MVC) in a key Missouri Valley Conference series.  All three games can be heard live in the Tri-State area on 107.1 FM-WJPS and seen live on ESPN+.  Tickets are also available by calling the UE ticket office by phone at 812-488-2623.

University of Evansville graduate outfielder Mark Shallenberger (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis Priory) was named the Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week on Monday after helping the Purple Aces to three victories last week against Austin Peay and Belmont.  It is Shallenberger’s second MVC Player of the Week award in his UE career.

Shallenberger hit a team-best .357 with three home runs and a team-best eight RBI in UE’s four contests last week.  He hit a key three-run home run to ignite UE’s offense in a 13-6 victory over Austin Peay to begin the week, as he went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and four RBI.  Shallenberger also had two home runs and knocked a double on Saturday in UE’s 8-3 victory at Belmont to secure the series victory.  Four of Shallenberger’s five hits on the week went for extra-bases, as he had a double and three home runs, while slugging 1.071.  He also worked three walks on the week, while posting a .500 on-base percentage.

Overall, Shallenberger leads the UE offense with a .377 average, seven home runs and 31 RBI.  Shallenberger and the Purple Aces will try to wrap up its current four-game road trip on a winning note on Tuesday afternoon, as UE will travel north to Indianapolis to battle the Butler Bulldogs.  First-pitch is set for 3 p.m. central time at Butler’s Bulldog Park.

Evansville will bring a 14-17 overall record into Tuesday’s game after winning two out of three games in a series at Belmont over the weekend.  UE has won four of the last five games overall.  The Purple Aces continue to rank among the national leaders in doubles this season with 84, as UE ranks third in NCAA Division I baseball in the category.

Butler will bring a 13-16 overall record into Tuesday’s game after dropping two of three games at Creighton over the weekend to open Big East play.  Junior infielder Carter Dorighi currently leads the Butler offense with a .391 average, while freshman infielder Kade Lewis is not far behind at .387.  Lewis has been as good as any hitter in college baseball of late, hitting safely in 15 of the last 16 games with 11 multi-hit games in those 16 contests.  He also provides the power in the Butler attack, having hit a team-best nine home runs so far.

Evansville will starter sophomore RHP Elias Hachem (0-0, 0.00 ERA) on Tuesday afternoon.  He will be opposed by Butler RHP Cooper Robinson (0-0, 54.00 ERA).

For the second year in a row, University of Evansville golfer Kate Petrova was the top finisher at the Indiana State Invitational at the Country Club of Terre Haute.

After sitting in a tie with teammate Jane Grankina following the opening round, Petrova posted a 1-over 73 to defeat the competition in Monday’s final round.  Her 144 bested Olivia Jang of Purdue Fort Wayne by two strokes.

Jane Grankina took third place in the final standings with a 147.  After opening with a 71, she posted a 76 in the final 18 holes to complete the event with a 147.  Third on the Purple Aces squad and tying for 13th overall was Allison Enchelmayer.  She made a nice improvement from her opening round score.  Enchelmayer began the tournament with a 79 before shooting a 75 on Monday to finish with a 154.

Carly Frazier came home in 20th place.  She also made a jump from Sunday’s score.  Frazier recorded an 81 on the first day but carded a 78 in the final 18 to wrap up play with a 159.  Destynie Sheridan earned a 31st place finish with a 169.  Individual Trinity Dubbs registered a final tally of 157.  Dubbs notched an 80 on Sunday before completing Monday’s round with a 77.  Her 157 tied her for 18th place.

Purdue Fort Wayne took the team win with a 600.  The Mastodons defeated Evansville by three strokes.  PFW shot a 296 on Monday to complete the event with a 600, besting UE by three strokes.  The Aces travel to Waterloo, Ill. for the Missouri Valley Conference Championship next weekend.  The tournament runs from Sunday through Tuesday.

Even scores of 71 by Nicholas Gushrowski and Caleb Wassmer led the University of Evansville men’s golf team in Monday’s opening round of the Tennessee State University Big Blue Intercollegiate at Hermitage Golf Course.

Gushrowski and Wassmer are tied for 16th place at the halfway point of the tournament.  Carson Parker and Michael Ikejiani finished Monday’s round with scores of 72.  Their 1-over-par rounds have them tied for 23rd.  Isaac Rohleder carded a 74 in the first 18 holes and is in 37th.

Evansville is fifth in the team standings, just one behind Austin Peay.  Missouri State and Samford lead the way with each finishing at 3-under-par on the day.  Phillip Darst of Miles and Missouri State’s Eric Schuessler pace the individuals with 4-under rounds of 67.

Tuesday will mark the final round of the tournament.
