Dr. LaMar served as an American Heart Association Basic Life Support Instructor for over thirty years.  She has contributed chapters on Growth and Development and Culture to both the 8th & 9th Editions of “Essentials of Nursing” and the 9th & 10th Editions of “Fundamentals of Nursing” textbooks published by Mosby-Elsevier.  She revised the study guides for the 7th Edition of “Clinical Nursing Fundamentals Study Guide” and wrote the 600-item test bank for the 7th Edition of “Basic Nursing”.  In addition, she has served as an item writer for the American Association of Colleges of Nursing's Clinical Nurse Leader Certification Exam.  Dr. LaMar served as a UE Faculty Senator for numerous terms, was Chair of the UE Faculty Senate in 2017, and served on several Senate Committees.  She served as a faculty advisor for the Professional Student Nurse Organization (SNAP) on the UE campus.  She held the White Family Endowed Professorship in Nursing until she retired.  Dr. LaMar served as the UE site coordinator for a national research study sponsored by the American Heart Association, the National League of Nursing, Laerdal, and HeartCode that measured the retention of CPR skills in nursing students using an e-learning tool to teach CPR.  She has co-authored three journal articles that reported the findings of the study.  This groundbreaking study changed the way that CPR is taught in the United States.

Dr. LaMar has received the 2020 Eykamp Prize, the American Red Cross Hero in Education Award in 2012, and the Daisy Faculty Award in 2015.  In 2022, former UE nursing students from the class of 2016 had her inducted into the Florence Nightingale Book of Honor.  In 2023, she was honored by a former student, Dr. Nina Weiss, with a Leadership in Nursing Award in her name that will be given to a UE graduating nursing student each year at their pinning ceremony.  Dr. LaMar, through a partnership with Deaconess Hospital, led countless medical mission trips to Annotto Bay, Jamaica.  She took dozens of nursing students to Jamaica over the years.  She taught five semesters abroad at Harlaxton College, introducing nursing students to the UK's National Healthcare System.
Before retiring, Dr. LaMar received approval from the Indiana State Board of Nursing for the University of Evansville to launch a second-degree Accelerated BSN Degree to help with the severe nursing shortage in our community.  This is a project that she had worked on for several years.  She has temporarily come out of retirement in order to be Interim Program Director while a search is underway to permanently fill the position.  She looks forward to spending time with her husband, family, and animals on their Posey County goat dairy farm once that position is filled.

Bryan Lynch, Professor of Chemistry
Dr. Lynch received B.S. degree in Chemistry (magna cum laude) with department honors from University of Pittsburgh.  His PhD in Physical Chemistry was also awarded from the University of Pittsburgh, and his postdoctoral work was done at Cornell University.  His specializations are Laser Spectroscopy of Small Molecules and Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy.

His research interests include studying the structure of electronic excited states of small molecules in the gas phase using a nitrogen-pumped dye laser, using the double resonance technique where the molecule is pumped to a low-lying excited state with the dye laser, then excite to higher lying states with a small portion of the initial nitrogen pulse.  Presently, he is working on probing the vibrational levels of ion-pair states and using Franck-Condon calculations to assign the various transitions observed.  He is also studying weak intermolecular attractive forces in small, organic molecules that give rise to short-range ordering and cluster formation in the solid state.

Dr. Lynch’s publications include “Observation of the Ã1A″ State of Isocyanogen”, “An EPR Study of Some Highly Distorted Tetrahedral Manganese(II) Complexes at High Magnetic Fields”, and ”1-mm Wave ESR Spectrometer”.

Bill Stroube, Professor of Health Services Administration
Dr. Stroube earned his B.S. in Chemistry from Murray State University, and an M.B.A. in Finance from University of Maryland.  His PhD in Analytical and Nuclear Chemistry was awarded from the University of Kentucky.
Dr. Stroube has served as Professor of Health Services Administration and Director of the Health Services Administration graduate and undergraduate programs.  Before joining the faculty in 1998, he spent twelve years in management positions in the pharmaceutical industry, and eight years at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in Washington, D.C.
At UE, he has served on various university committees, was Chair of the Faculty Senate, and served a three-years term as Chair of the School of Health Sciences.  He received the University Outstanding Teaching Award at the May 2008 Commencement.
Dr. Stroube has maintained an active research program and has authored and co-authored over seventy publications in peer reviewed journals and conference proceedings.  His research and teaching interests include international health care issues, health care strategy, and medical ethics.
He has extensive international experience leading student groups through many health care systems with focus on England, China, and India. He has spent twenty summers teaching at Harlaxton.  For five summers, he taught a four-week study abroad course in China.  Since 2017, he has served as a Visiting Fellow at the Centre for Health Innovation, Leadership and Learning at the University of Nottingham.  He was an Adjunct Professor in 2017 and 2018 at IMS Union University in Dehradun, India.  During numerous trips to India during the past fourteen years, he has provided workshops for faculty and students, and served on university and hospital advisory boards.  He plans to continue his work in India and England after retirement from UE.

Gregg Wilson, Professor of School of Health Services
Dr. Wilson is a UE graduate who holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in History with a minor in Psychology and a concentration in Liberal Arts.  He is a graduate of Indiana University, where he obtained his master’s and doctorate degrees, both in Exercise Science.  He is a former Department Chair of the School of Health Sciences.

Dr. Wilson has received several teaching awards at UE, including the Dean’s Teaching Award, Chi Omega Outstanding Teaching Award, and the 2004 Exemplary Teaching Award given by the General Board of Higher Education of the United Methodist Church.  He has published four textbooks in the dual areas of Exercise and Health Science and has contributed eighteen book chapters to a variety of edited textbooks on a wide range of topics, including the relationship of exercise to mental health, the effects of anxiety on performance, exercise testing for special populations and overtraining and staleness.  In addition, Dr. Wilson has fifty publications in peer-reviewed journals and has been named a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and selected as a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars for his scholarly contributions.  He has also enjoyed teaching at Harlaxton College on multiple occasions.  Prior to his arrival at the University of Evansville, Dr. Wilson taught at Lander University in South Carolina and at Indiana University, where he was also an assistant track coach.

Congratulations

* Mechanical Engineering Seniors join the Order of the Engineer

Congratulations to the Mechanical Engineering Class of 2024 on joining the Order of the Engineer as they prepare to enter the engineering profession. Congratulations to two of our alums, Mary Miller and Paul Simms, who also participated in this year's initiation ceremony. Details of the Order from the organization's website are included below.

The Order of the Engineer was initiated in the United States to foster a spirit of pride and responsibility in the engineering profession, to bridge the gap between training and experience, and to present to the public a visible symbol identifying the engineer. At the induction ceremony, engineers are invited to accept the Obligation of the Engineer and a stainless steel ring. The Order fosters a unity of purpose and the honoring of one’s pledge lifelong. The Obligation is a creed similar to the oath attributed to Hippocrates (460-377 B.C.) that is generally taken by medical graduates and which sets forth an ethical code. The Obligation likewise, contains parts of the Canon of Ethics of major engineering societies. Initiates, as they accept it voluntarily, pledge to uphold the standards and dignity of the engineering profession and to serve humanity by making the best use of Earth’s precious wealth.

* UE Baseball Game At Purdue Moved To Wednesday Due To Rain

Due to the forecast for constant rain in the West Lafayette, Indiana area on Tuesday, the University of Evansville baseball game at Purdue has been moved to Wednesday evening at 5 p.m. central time.  Now, the streaking Purple Aces will put its eight-game winning streak on the line on Wednesday against the Big Ten’s Purdue Boilermakers.

Evansville will enter Wednesday’s game with a 22-17 overall record after sweeping Bradley in a three-game Missouri Valley Conference series over the weekend.  UE enters the week tied for the nation’s second-longest winning streak, as the Purple Aces have won eight-straight games, and 12 out of 13 games overall.  It marks the fourth year in a row in which the Purple Aces have put together an eight-game winning streak during the course of the season, something that has never happened before in program history.

Pitching has helped power UE’s current eight-game winning streak, as over the last eight games, UE’s pitching staff has posted a 3.31 ERA.  Freshman left-hander Kevin Reed (3-0, 7.50 ERA) will get the start in Wednesday’s contest.  Reed is coming off of one of his best outings of the year last time out, as he allowed just three runs (two earned) over 5.0 innings of work at Indiana in the Purple Aces’ 5-4 win.  Reed has been at his best this year against big-time competition, as he has posted a combined 1-0 record and 4.82 ERA in two starts against Indiana and Kentucky.

Offensively, Evansville continues to rank among the nation’s leaders in doubles, as UE currently ranks fifth in the country with 102 doubles.  The Purple Aces are just five doubles shy of the national lead, and five different Purple Aces already have double-digit doubles totals on the year.  Senior infielder/outfielder Kip Fougerousse and junior outfielder Harrison Taubert are currently tied for the team lead, and rank second in the Missouri Valley Conference with 14 doubles this season.

Purdue will enter Wednesday’s game at 25-15 overall.  The Boilermakers boast one of the nation’s top freshman hitters in redshirt freshman Luke Gaffney.  Gaffney will bring a .403 batting average into Wednesday’s game, and he has already set a new Purdue freshman record with 54 RBI this season.  Gaffney provides the power in the Boilermaker lineup as well, as he has launched a team-leading 10 home runs, while also knocking 13 doubles and two triples.  Overall, the Boilermakers are tied for second in the Big Ten in scoring at 8.4 runs per game.

All-time, Purdue holds a slim 20-19 edge in the series with Evansville, after the Purple Aces won three series meetings last year, including a 12-10 victory at Purdue’s Alexander Field.  Wednesday’s game can be heard live in the Tri-State area on 107.1 FM-WJPS and seen live on the Big Ten Network+ streaming service.
