UE Announces 2026 MLK Day Lectureship

The University of Evansville (UE) will host the 2026 William G. & Rose Mays MLK Day Lectureship on Monday, January 19, welcoming renowned journalist and scholar Dr. Jelani Cobb as the keynote speaker. The event will take place in Eykamp Hall within Ridgway University Center, with doors opening at 3:30 p.m. and the program beginning at 4:00 p.m.
This year’s Lectureship focuses on the theme “Servant. Strategist. Change Agent. The Center for Inclusive Excellence leads this effort and supports the programming that surrounds it.
Dr. Cobb’s work on race, history, democracy, and social change has established him as one of the most respected voices in contemporary public discourse. His participation in the 2026 Lectureship offers the campus and greater Evansville community an opportunity to explore transformative leadership in both historical and modern contexts.
The Lectureship is open to the public, and seating will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Additional details about the event and the full 2026 MLK Celebration schedule can be found here. |

Aces Suffer First Home Defeat to Austin Peay
|
|
EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Evansville women's basketball team dropped their first home game of the season on Sunday, falling to visiting Austin Peay by a score of 63-57. After facing a five-point deficit at the half, the Aces battled back to tie the game at 43 heading into the fourth quarter, but the Govs outscored the Aces 20-14 in the final period to take the win.
Camryn Runner (Cicero, Ind./Hamilton Heights) led the Aces in scoring for the seventh time this season, scoring 14 points. Runner was a perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line and has made 19 consecutive free throws dating back to November 30. Logan Luebbers Palmer (Union, Ky./Randall K. Cooper) added 12 points for the Aces for her eighth double-digit scoring effort of the season. Jelena Savic (Melbourne, Australia/Kurunjang Secondary College) scored nine points and grabbed a season-high six rebounds in 20 solid minutes off the bench.
Mireia Mustaros (Barcelona, Spain/Ins Argentona) got the Aces going early, converting two free throws and a layup to give her team a 4-0 lead. However, the Govs responded with an 8-0 run to grab the lead with 4:48 remaining in the opening quarter. Despite briefly grabbing the lead back on a three-pointer from Luebbers Palmer with just under two minutes remaining in the quarter, Austin Peay took a four-point lead heading into the second quarter on a three on the quarter's final possession.
The Govs continued to control things in the second quarter, taking a 25-16 lead with 5:38 to go in the period. A pair of perfect trips to the line by Sydney Huber (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Mount Vernon) and Luebbers Palmer brought the Aces back within five, while an and-one layup by Georgia Ferguson made the score 26-22 with 3:07 to go in the half. Austin Peay responded with a five-point burst to bring their lead back up to nine, but the Aces finished the half strong with a triple from Savic on the final possession of the quarter, making it 31-26 at the break.
Evansville quickly evened the score, using a three from Huber and a fast break layup by Runner on the Aces' first two possessions coming out of the locker room. The Govs and Aces traded baskets over the next several minutes, with Luebbers Palmer knocking down a three and Ferguson converting a layup, but the Govs used a triple to regain a 40-36 advantage with 5:13 to play in the third. Evansville dug in defensively over the next five minutes of play, limiting Austin Peay to three points for the rest of the quarter, while Savic and Runner sunk four free throws and Luebbers Palmer drilled another shot from distance to make it a 43-43 ballgame heading into the fourth quarter.
Austin Peay regained their offensive footing in the fourth quarter, scoring five points on their first four possessions of the quarter to retake the lead. BreAunna Ward (St. Louis, Mo./John Burroughs School) knocked down a jumper and added a free throw to bring the Aces back within two, while Huber answered a Govs three with a three of her own to keep it a one-possession game with 5:29 remaining. However, Austin Peay responded with a 9-3 run over the next five minutes game action to open up a nine-point lead and would hang on from there, securing a 63-57 win.
The Aces open up MVC play on Wednesday, heading to Nashville for a clash with Belmont. Tip-off is set for 6:30 PM. |

Turnbull and Hughes lead Aces in road contest
|
|
SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Connor Turnbull and Josh Hughes combined to score 31 points on Saturday as the University of Evansville men’s basketball team dropped an 82-58 game to Notre Dame inside Purcell Pavilion.
Reigning Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week Turnbull led UE with 17 points, 9 boards, and 4 blocks. Hughes returned to form, scoring 14 points while hitting four triples. It ended a stretch of four games without reaching double figures. The Fighting Irish were led by Braeden Shrewsberry who registered a game-high 26 points. Sir Mohammed wrapped up the day with 21.
“I thought we played a good 28 minutes of basketball today but let a few uncontrollable things get the better of us during the other stretches,” UE head coach David Ragland explained. “Overall, the final score was not indicative of how competitive the game was. There are some areas we need to fix as we head into conference play.”
Notre Dame scored the opening eight points of the day converting three of their first four attempts. Evansville missed its first two tries while turning it over twice before a 3-pointer by Leif Moeller got UE on the board. It marked the first of eight in a row by the Purple Aces. Connor Turnbull connected on a jumper while Alex Hemenway hit from downtown to tie the score at the 15:31 mark.
Nearly six minutes into the game a layup from AJ Casey gave UE its first lead at 12-10. The Fighting Irish countered with 11 in a row to go up 21-12 with 11:22 left in the period with a Turnbull triple getting UE back on track. UE would get within five points (26-21) until a late stretch by Notre Dame gave them their largest lead of 15 points – 41-26 – inside the final minute.
Josh Hughes drained his third triple of the game to make it a 41-29 game at the break. He led UE with nine points in the half while Braeden Shrewsberry registered 17 in the stanza, knocking down five of his six 3-point tries.
The eighth triple of the afternoon by the Irish matched their largest lead to open the second-half scoring. Triples from Keishon Porter and Hughes helped the Aces get back within nine points, however, a pair of jumpers by Jalen Haraison set the Irish up with a 52-40 lead with 14:46 remaining in the game.
Over the next three minutes, Evansville made its way right back into it as Turnbull scored seven in a row on his own converting two layups and three free throws. Porter added a pair of free throws to cap the 9-0 stretch and make it a one-possession game at 52-49. It did not take long for Notre Dame to respond. It took less than two minutes for them to post nine in a row to retake a 12-point lead.
Trent Hundley went coast-to-coast to end the stretch, but the Fighting Irish came right back with an 8-0 run to open a 69-51 lead at the 7:21 mark. Inside of five minutes remaining, a pair of triples put the Irish up 78-53. From there, they would go on to win by a final score of 82-58. Casey and Porter finished with nine points apiece for UE, who shot 39.6% on the day. Notre Dame finished at 47.5% and outrebounded the Aces by a 38-32 tally.
Evansville returns home to open MVC play on Tuesday against Belmont before facing Drake on Dec. 21 inside the Ford Center. Fans are reminded that Tuesday’s game will be a 6 p.m. tip.

Escudero, Wurschmidt Earn United Soccer Coaches All-Region Honors
|
|
KANSAS CITY – The University of Evansville men's soccer team was well-represented on the United Soccer Coaches All-West Region Team, with Martin Wurschmidt (Stavern, Norway/Thor Heyerdahl VGS) and Andres Escudero (San Sebastián de los Reyes, Spain/IES Joan Miro) earning Second Team All-Region honors, the organization announced on Tuesday. Wurschmidt and Escudero were two of seven MVC players selected for All-West Region teams, while the Aces were the only Valley team with multiple All-Region selections.
Wurschmidt was named Evansville's third-ever MVC Defensive Player of the Year this season and the first since Robby Lynch in 2010, in addition to earning First Team All-Conference honors. Wurschmidt was a mainstay on the Evansville back line this season as the only Purple Aces field player to play all 1,800 minutes. As a unit, the Evansville defense limited conference opponents to a league-low .71 goals per game during regular season play, including four shutouts. Wurschmidt was also a threat on the offensive end of the pitch, going a perfect three-for-three from the penalty spot while adding an assist for a total of seven points.
Escudero continued Evansville's legacy of standout freshman this season, scoring a team-leading 11 goals. He became the fourth Purple Ace to be named MVC Freshman of the Year since 2020 and the fifth in the last eight seasons, in addition to receiving First Team All-MVC and All-Freshman Team accolades. His goal total was good for second among all freshmen in the country, while he was one of two freshmen in the country with four braces this season. Escudero also earned MVC All-Tournament Team laurels after notching a brace in a 4-1 semifinal win over UIC. |
