* UE Biology/Environmental Science Alumni Publish Article with Biology Professors

Congratulations to UE biology alumni Elyse Talley, Darcie Smith, Christie Guetling (nei Hubbard),  former UE ES alumni Caitlin Caldwell and Jordon Lachowecki and former ES Physics alum Adam Dillman for their publication in the journal Plant Ecology. Their research, entitled, “Quality varies among host species, but diet mixing provides no benefit to the generalist parasite, Cuscuta gronovii” was guided by Dr. Cris G. Hochwender and Dr. E. Ann Powell. This D1 research pushes the boundary on the ecological understanding of diet mixing for generalist parasitic plants. The findings from the study suggest that the benefit of diet mixing seen for herbivores cannot be generalized to include parasitic plants. While diet mixing does not increase the fitness of C. gronovii, host plant quality associated with plant defenses appears to mediate parasite success.

This publication is the first published manuscript in a series associated with the collaboration between Dr. Ann Powell and Dr. Cris Hochwender. While faculty publication success is encouraging for these faculty members, the faculty are more encouraged that the research projects associated with six undergraduate students has been brought to fruition through a peer-reviewed publication in such a well-regarded journal!

* Evansville Takes Exhibition Win Over Roosevelt

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Evansville women's basketball team hit the floor for the first time this season on Tuesday night for an exhibition game, taking a 68-63 win over Roosevelt. Logan Luebbers Palmer (Union, Ky./Randall K. Cooper) had a big night offensively for the Purple Aces, pouring in a game-high 23 points on 10-of-19 shooting, including a 3-for-3 mark from three-point range.

The Aces and Lakers went back-and-forth through the first five minutes of play, with Evansville taking a 5-4 lead at the 5:04 mark in the first quarter. However, the Aces got hot to close the period, going on a 12-0 run to close the quarter. Avery Kelley (Evansville, Ind./Memorial) led the charge during the run, scoring six points.

The Purple Aces maintained their lead throughout the second quarter, taking a 32-25 lead into the half. Luebbers Palmer led the Aces in scoring in the period, contributing five points.

Luebbers Palmer continued to fill up the stat sheet in the beginning of the third quarter, scoring nine of Evansville's first 13 points in the period to help the Aces stretch the lead to nine. After being held to three points in the first half, reigning MVC Freshman of the Year Camryn Runner (Cicero, Ind./Hamilton Heights) got going in the third quarter, knocking down a three to push the lead to 12 before sinking four free throws to help the Purple Aces remain in front 54-47 through three quarters.

Luebbers Palmer led the Aces once again early in the fourth quarter, using a layup and three-pointer to move past the 20-point mark and give her team a 12-point lead. After the Lakers fought back late in the quarter, Kelley helped the Aces secure the win, making five of six free throws in the final 31 seconds as Evansville secured a 68-63 win.

The Aces open the regular season next Thursday, traveling to SEMO to take on the Redhawks. Tip-off is set for 11 AM. Evansville opens the regular season home slate on November 20, hosting IU Indy at Meeks Family Fieldhouse for a 6 PM tip.

* Men's Soccer Downs Louisville for First Time Since 2001

LOUISVILLE – Evansville senior Tancredi Fadda (Monza, Italy/University of Milan) notched his first career brace and freshman Devin Shepherd (Denver, Colo./Arapahoe) added a goal to power the Purple Aces to their first win over Louisville since 2001 on Monday night, taking down the Cardinals by a score of 3-1. The win was Evansville's first over a power conference opponent since 2013 and the first over the Cardinals in Louisville since 1991.

Evansville jumped on top early in the match, scoring in the fourth minute to take a 1-0 lead. Fadda capitalized on a Louisville mistake, grabbing a loose ball at the top of the box and finding the back of the net for his third goal of the campaign.

Andres Escudero (San Sebastián de los Reyes, Spain/IES Joan Miro) nearly doubled the lead in the 11th minute, but his shot went just wide of the far post to keep it a one-goal game. Aces keeper Michal Mroz (Elk Grove, Ill./Elk Grove) was tested for the first time in the 17th minute and faced another shot on target in the 27th minute, but collected saves on both chances.

Evansville saw another near scoring chance in the 36th minute off a free kick, taken by Ben Zec (Carmel, Ind./Carmel). Zec placed a ball near the penalty spot for Håkon Edstrøm (Baerum, Norway/Norges Toppidrettsgymnas), but his header went just over the crossbar.

Just before halftime, the Aces broke through for their second goal of the match, with Shepherd scoring his fourth goal of the year. The chance was created by Zec once again, who lifted a ball from midfield line on the near side down towards the far side of the box for Shepherd, who uncorked a laser past the Cardinals keeper to make it a 2-0 game.

Louisville battled back in the second half, scoring a goal in the 64th minute to cut the Evansville lead back down to one. However, the Purple Aces kept their foot on the gas pedal and continued to threaten the Cardinals back line. Shepherd nearly secured his second brace of the season in the 72nd minute, putting a left-footed shot on target, but a great save by Louisville keeper Alex Svetanoff denied the freshman.

In the 78th minute, Escudero created another chance for the Aces, earning possession along the sideline in the Evansville attacking end. From there, Shepherd took the ball near the box before giving it back to Escudero, who delivered a beautiful cross into the box for Fadda. Off one touch and a spin, Fadda ripped a shot into the bottom right corner for his second goal of the night, delivering the dagger for a 3-1 win.

"I told the guys this win is a culmination of our efforts vs Louisville since 2021," said Head Coach Robbe Tarver. "Our performance tonight away at an ACC program shows what we can be and how our guys can compete. Ultimately, these are the games we want to compete in consistently, but Friday against NIU at home is more important!"

With the win, Evansville moves to 5-3-8 overall. The Purple Aces now turn their to attention to a critical final two matches of the regular season, beginning with the final home match of the regular season on Friday against Northern Illinois. Evansville, Northern Illinois and Drake currently sit in a three-way tie atop the MVC standings at 2-0-3, while the Aces look for their first regular season conference title since 1991. Friday's match against the Huskies is set for 6 PM at Arad McCutchan Stadium.

* Lammers Named MVC Goalkeeper of the Week for Third Time This Season

ST. LOUIS – University of Evansville sophomore goalkeeper Allie Lammers (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mount Notre Dame) notched another honor in a breakout season on Tuesday, being named the MVC Goalkeeper of the Week for the third time this year, the league office announced. Lammers earns the honor after posting 12 saves and allowing only one goal across two matches this week, including a career-high seven save performance in Thursday's 2-0 win over Northern Iowa.

Lammers led Evansville to a crucial victory over the Panthers, posting her fifth shutout of the year while facing 21 shots, the second-most she has faced in a match this season. On Sunday at Drake, Lammers tallied five saves on 11 shots faced, moving her season saves total to 45.

Lammers has been one of the top goalkeepers in the country this year, ranking 40th in the country in save percentage (.833) and 57th nationally in goals against average (0.82). Her three MVC Goalkeeper of the Week awards are the most by a Valley keeper this season and marks the first time an Evansville keeper has been named MVC Goalkeeper three times in a single season since Simone Busby 2014.

Evansville wraps up the regular season on Thursday, hosting Valparaiso at Arad McCutchan Stadium. The Purple Aces look to punch their ticket to the MVC Tournament against the Beacons, needing a win or a UIC tie or loss to earn a spot in the six-team bracket. Kick-off on Thursday is set for 1 PM.

* Evansville Promise Neighborhood Partners Unite to Drive Collective Action Across Four Key Pipelines

The Evansville Promise Neighborhood (EPN) at the University of Evansville (UE) continues to strengthen its collaborative approach to community transformation, bringing together partners across four key focus areas to launch collective, high-impact initiatives that empower local families and create pathways of opportunity.

Following EPN's first-ever Essential Staff Training and Annual All-Partner Meeting earlier this year, each of the four EPN workgroups formed a Task Force to identify one or two collective projects that extend beyond individual partner programs. These Task Forces are now implementing their first shared action plans designed to make a measurable, lasting impact across the neighborhood.

Pipeline 1: Early Health and Kindergarten Readiness

To strengthen early learning outcomes, the Early Health and Kindergarten Readiness pipeline is leading a neighborhood-wide effort to empower families through the Little Moments, Big Growth campaign. The campaign aims to equip caregivers of young children with the tools, knowledge, and confidence to prepare their child for school. More than a message, Little Moments, Big Growth empowers families to take small, everyday actions that lead to big outcomes in a child's learning journey.

Pipeline 2: Student Achievement and Success

Recognizing that student success begins with being present, the Student Achievement and Success pipeline is piloting creative strategies to support attendance and family connection throughout the year. Efforts include the development of a consistent and shared attendance incentive structure and strategies to overcome transportation barriers-supported in part by the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation's (EVSC) new Promise Neighborhood bus, PN1, which works to help students and families stay connected and engaged throughout the year.

Pipeline 3: Postsecondary Access, Success, and Workforce Readiness

By taking a multigenerational approach to college and career readiness, the Postsecondary Access, Success, and Workforce Readiness pipeline is inspiring both students and families to dream big and plan ahead. Work is underway to develop mobile engagement displays, with the possibility of including virtual reality (VR) experiences, that will bring college and career exploration directly to students and families. The goal is to spark meaningful, future-focused conversations about education and career paths-wherever families already gather.

Pipeline 4: Neighborhood and Community Revitalization

Focused on building a healthier neighborhood, the Neighborhood and Community Revitalization pipeline is bringing fresh produce and interactive learning to EVSC family engagement events and after-school programs. By incorporating fresh produce and educational components into student experiences, the initiative seeks to build lifelong healthy habits and deepen understanding of food and nutrition.

About Evansville Promise Neighborhood

Evansville Promise Neighborhood (EPN) is an initiative housed at the University of Evansville's Center for Innovation & Change, made possible through funding from the U.S. Department of Education. EPN focuses on building strategic partnerships that empower generations and create opportunities for kids, families, and entire communities.

* $50,000 Moskowitz Family Gift Establishes First-Ever Student Awards for UE Physician Assistant Program

The University of Evansville (UE) is proud to announce a transformational $50,000 gift from Dr. Jay Moskowitz and Mrs. Joanne Moskowitz that will establish the first-ever student awards in the Department of Physician Assistant Science (UEPA).

The Moskowitz Family Physician Assistant Award for Innovation in Healthcare and the Moskowitz Family Physician Assistant Leadership Award will empower students who are driven to improve healthcare through bold ideas, creativity, compassionate leadership, and a deep commitment to service. Each year, recipients will be recognized at the UEPA hooding ceremony and receive funding to support participation in a related Health Sciences conference. The awards are supported by a permanent endowment, ensuring they will impact students for generations to come.

Physician assistants play a vital role in expanding access to care, often serving as the first point of contact and the driving force behind coordinated, compassionate healthcare. At UE, the Physician Assistant Science Program prepares students to meet this need, especially in underserved and rural areas.

"Good health made possible, that's our credo," said Dr. Moskowitz. "These awards are about more than recognition. They're about fueling the energy and excellence of students who will shape the future of care."

Dr. Moskowitz's career spans more than five decades in science, policy, and healthcare leadership. At the National Institutes of Health, he helped launch the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders and championed translational science, bridging laboratory breakthroughs with clinical solutions. At Wake Forest University School of Medicine, he spearheaded a dramatic expansion of the medical school's research enterprise. During his time at Pennsylvania State University, he integrated research programs across campuses and established the "Jayhound" inter-campus shuttle, strengthening health science collaborations. "Innovation doesn't happen in isolation," he said. "Everywhere we've gone, I've tried to connect universities, industry, and communities."

Joanne Moskowitz's impact has been equally profound. A lifelong educator, she taught elementary school for more than 30 years, instilling curiosity and confidence in young learners. "Sparking curiosity in children is what carries them forward into science, medicine, and service," she said. Her belief in the power of early education continues to shape the couple's philanthropic vision.

Now residents of Evansville, the Moskowitz family is deeply connected to UE's mission. "Every student deserves someone in their corner," said Mrs. Moskowitz. "For us, that means creating opportunities for growth, for learning, and for giving back in whatever ways we can."

"When a student sees their name on this plaque 20 years from now," Dr. Moskowitz added. "I hope they remember that someone believed in them, and that it inspires them to believe in others."
