* Diana Rodriguez Quevedo to Speak at Andiron Lecture on September 5

Assistant Professor of Spanish Diana Rodriguez Quevedo will be the speaker for the Andiron Lecture on Wednesday, Sept. 5 at 4 p.m. in Eykamp 252, Ridgway University Center. A social gathering will precede the lecture at 3:45 p.m. The topic of the lecture will be “Skipping Beats: The Impact of the Illegal Drug Trade on Columbian Music.”

Rodríguez Quevedo holds a PhD from the University of Toronto. She teaches a wide variety of courses that include Spanish language, Spanish conversation, business Spanish, Latin American culture and civilization, and Latin American literature. Her research focuses on non-canonical texts of Latin America, such as testimonio narratives and songs. Colombia’s music has undergone some transformations due to the influence of the illegal drug trade over the past four decades. Cumbia, once known as the emblematic rhythm of the nation, was replaced by vallenato, which itself faced competition from the production and commercialization of narcocorridos or prohibited corridos. This lecture will offer an overview of the main impacts the illicit drug trade has had on Colombian music.

For further information, call the series coordinator M. Christine Mohn at 812-488-2585 or the College of Arts and Sciences at 812-488-2589.

Info You Should Know

* Lost - Leather Bracelet - Reward Offered

A thick leather bracelet has been lost on campus - somewhere on the grassy knoll or in Ridgway University Center or near Hyde Hall. The bracelet is dark brown with a button clip with a quote engraved into it. This bracelet has great sentimental value for the owner as it was a gift from her best friend back home in Las Vegas (the two have known each other since third grade.) The owner is offering a reward for its return ASAP. Please call 702-769-1410 or email  tb163@evansville.edu.

* Parking Changes

In the spring of 2012, adjustments to parking lot assignments were done to compensate for lost parking during the construction phase of the Fifth Third Men’s and Women’s Basketball Practice Facility.  With the conclusion of the construction approaching, the University has reassigned parking permitted lots effective Monday, September 3.

A new parking lot, Lot R, has been created on Olive Street for residential students.

Lot N – corner of Rotherwood and Walnut – will resume as a Commuter Student lot only  (overflow for Green Permits is allowed).   Residential students should remove their cars by Monday, September 3 at 7:00 a.m. and should utilize the new parking lot, Lot R, as well as Lots G, O, P, and H.

Lot A behind the Schroeder Family School of Business will resume as a Faculty/Staff lot only.  Commuter students will no longer be allowed to park in this area.

Thank you to everyone for your patience during these times of transition.
