Two oral history interviews now appear on the UE Library's Archives website, conducted by "The Future of UE's Archives" ChangeLab students last semester! You’ll find one under the Mary Ross Ellingson Collection listing, in which students interview Prof. Alan Kaiser about his book based on the collection. The other appears under the Our Times Collection listing, where students talk with local activist and UE alumna Sondra Matthews, who founded and ran the tri-state’s longest running Black-owned paper for nearly 40 years.

* MacArthur Announcement–Professor Emeritus of Philosophy Anthony Beavers

Professor Emeritus of Philosophy Anthony Beavers was recently awarded a grant from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation to document the decline of philosophy in U.S. institutions of higher education. The grant follows three years of preliminary work by a team of researchers compiled by Beavers, who will each serve as Co-PIs on the grant. These include Peter Suber and David Weinberger, both formerly of the Berkman Klein Center for Internet and Society at Harvard University, Catherine Kemp, Associate Professor of Philosophy and Law at John Jay College of Criminal Justice (CUNY), Corey McCall, former Associate Professor of Philosophy at Elmira College and current instructor in Cornell’s Prison Education Program, and Mark Valenzuela, former Associate Professor of Engineering at the University of Evansville and current Project Manager of Academic Compliance and Accreditation at Washington University, St. Louis.

This MacArthur grant was awarded in part as one step toward documenting the losses that affect professional competence and vocational training incurred by universities that cut philosophy and other humanities from their curricula. Subsequent work on this project will explore methods and mechanisms for addressing these losses, particularly as dependence on artificial intelligence seems poised to erode the cognitive capabilities of college students and their efficacy in the emerging job market.

Beavers, who taught philosophy along with cognitive and information science at UE from 1991 to 2021, will conduct this research as an affiliated faculty member in the Cognitive Science Program at Indiana University, Bloomington, where he currently researches artificial intelligence and its effects on human cognition.

* Imani Gordon named Assistant Women's Basketball Coach

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Imani Gordon has joined the University of Evansville women’s basketball program as an assistant coach in an announcement by Purple Aces head coach Robyn Scherr.

In a coaching career that spans nearly a decade, Gordon has spent time at Northern Illinois, Notre Dame College (Ohio), and Cleveland State.  She was a player for the Vikings from 2011-2015.

“I am thrilled Imani has chosen to join our staff! She spent the last two seasons at Northern Illinois working under Lisa Carlsen and Adam Tandez, two coaches that I have tremendous respect for and have known for many years,” Scherr said. “Their recommendations carried a lot of weight with me, but it was the connection that she and I had right from the jump that made her the obvious choice.”

“From my first phone call with Imani, I knew she is someone that I will love working alongside every day,” Scherr continued. “Her experience in basketball is obviously phenomenal, but more than that, who she is as a person fits what we are about here at Evansville!”

Gordon has served as an assistant coach at NIU since September of 2023. She worked in all aspects of the Huskies program including recruiting, academic oversight, community engagement, and player development while working as the defensive coordinator.  Her recruiting region was the Midwest as she worked during the season and offseason to communicate with recruits.

She made a huge impact in the classroom, directing her student-athletes to a 3.8 GPA in the Fall of 2023, the highest in school and program history.  Gordon oversaw all community service opportunities for the program and was the liaison to players for on-campus events.  On the floor, she prepped the team on opponents’ offensive keys and was in charge of the opposition’s scout while prepping players for their foes’ offensive tendencies.

From June of 2020 through March of 2023, Gordon was the head coach at Notre Dame College in Ohio.  She oversaw all aspects of the program including recruiting, fundraising, budgeting, and program leadership.  This opportunity came up following a 3-year tenure as the Recruiting Coordinator and Player Personnel Director at Notre Dame College.  With her assistance, the program accomplished numerous feats between 2017 and 2020 including most points scored in NDC history (110), most field goals in NDC history (40), most 3’s made in a game (17), two single season 3-pointer records, and three First Team All-Conference Selections.

NDC won the most games in school history with 26 while accomplishing the first 20-win campaign the program had seen.  She helped the team to its first MEC Championship appearance in 2018 before going 26-5 in 2019-20.  The team made its first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance that season.

Prior to her tenure at NDC, Gordon was a graduate assistant coach at Cleveland State from 2015 through 2017.  She assisted in practice and individual drills and campus recruit visits.  Gordon worked with the recruiting coordinator on all needs within that process including weekly mailings, recruit tracking, and schedules.  She attended staff recruiting and practice meetings.

As a player at CSU, Gordon finished in the top ten in school history in scoring, rebounding (both offensive and defensive), and free throws.  A 2-time team MVP, Gordon was part of the winningest class in CSU history and led the school to its first WNIT berth.  Gordon earned First Team and Second Team All-Conference recognition.

“I am incredibly excited to join this staff. I want to thank Robyn for taking the time to get to know me and for believing in me,” Gordon exclaimed. “She is building something special here that I am grateful to contribute to and be a part of. I am ready to pour into the players and become a part of this community!”

* Men's basketball signs Aaron Gutman

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Following a high school career that saw him finish as the all-time leading scorer at Walton-Verona High School, Aaron Gutman has signed on with the University of Evansville men’s basketball team.

“We are thrilled to welcome Aaron Gutman and his family to the UE family! As we continue building toward the future of our program, we're focused on bringing in young, high-potential talent—and Aaron exemplifies exactly that,” UE head men’s basketball coach David Ragland exclaimed. “He is an extremely competitive and athletic player with impressive positional size.”

“Our priority remains clear: adding skilled players who can dribble, pass, and shoot. Aaron checks all those boxes. Even more importantly, he brings a relentless drive to improve and a work ethic that stands out,” Ragland continued. “We are excited for the impact Aaron will have on our program in the years to come.”

Gutman completed his high school career with 2,050 points to go along with 675 rebounds, and 143 3-point makes.  The scoring record at Walton-Verona had stood since 1958.  Following the season, Gutman was tabbed as the Co-KABC Player of the Year in the 8th Region while earning 8th Region All-Region and 8th Region All-Tournament accolades.

He shined as a senior, averaging a team-high 23.3 points per game over the course of 34 contests.  Overall, Gutman was a 49.8% shooter from the field while adding a total of 67 triples in his final campaign.  He also paced the Bearcats with an average of 6.9 rebounds.   His efforts helped the team finish with a 21-13 record while playing in the 8th Region semifinals.

Following the season, Gutman was selected to play in the Kentucky-Ohio All-Star game and finished with 13 points, two blocks, a steal, and assist.  He is set to play for the Kentucky All-Star team in the Kentucky-Indiana All-Star games, which will take place on June 6 and 7.

“I chose Evansville because of the culture created by the coaches,” Gutman said.  “The biggest thing for me was being around people who truly appreciate me.”
