* Felton III and Oulgout qualify for finals for UE track and field on the first day of the MVC Outdoor Conference Championships

CARBONDALE, Ill. – On the first day of the Missouri Valley Conference Outdoor Conference Championships, the University of Evansville track and field team reset four program records while qualifying for three finals.

After a day of competition, the Purple Aces men’s team is ninth of 10 teams while the women’s team is tied with two other schools for 10th. UE’s men qualified for three final events on Sunday as sophomore Raymond Felton III (Houston / Clear Brook) placed in the top five in both the 100- and 200-meter dashes while senior Adam Oulgout (St. Paul, Minn. / Central HS) placed fifth in the 800-meter race. Overall, Evansville had nine runners set new PRs with four new program records.

SPRINTS, HURDLES, & RELAYS

Junior Kate Walke (Batesville, Ind. / Oldenberg Academy) had the first short-distance event of the day with the 100-meter hurdles. Walke placed 12th in the event with a time of 15.27 seconds. The Aces then competed in the 400-meter races, where freshman Myles Terry (Evansville, Ind. / North HS) finished 12th with a time of 49.81 seconds. While on the women’s side, sophomore Taylor Johnson (Evansville, Ind. / Reitz HS) finished a place higher in 11th place with a time of 56.77 seconds to rebreak her program record by just under three tenths of a second.

In the 100-meter dash events, Felton III qualified for Sunday’s final in third with a new PR of 10.48 seconds. Felton’s 100-meter dash time also broke the UE program record that’s stood since 1973. Junior José Ocampo (Monterrey, Nuevo León, Mexico) and sophomore Connor Shin (Bloomington, Ind. / Bloomington North HS) also finished in the event with times of 11.05 and 11.07 seconds.

Evansville returned to the hurdles for the 400-meter event. Freshman Zander Pickens (Poseyville, Ind. / North Posey HS) set a new PR in the event with his first finish at under a minute, running the event in 58.82 seconds. In the women’s event, Johnson finished a place outside of qualifying for the finals with a time of 1:02.92. But she did set a new program record in the event by three-quarters of a second.

The Aces ended their first day of the championship with the men’s 200-meter dash. Felton III qualified for the 200 finals as well, placing fifth with a time of 21.09 seconds. Felton’s time also set a new program record for UE, beating the previous record from 1979 by just under a tenth of a second. Terry and Shin also ran in the event for Evansville, finishing with times of 21.85 and 22.14 seconds.

MID-DISTANCE

Sophomore Tommaso Losma (Lombardia, Italy) ran the first mid-distance event of the afternoon. Losma ran the men’s 1,500-meter race in 4:04.21. In the women’s 1,500 race, sophomore Chase Hayes (Noblesville, Ind. / Western HS) set a new PR, finishing in 4:48.80.

The Aces’ only mid-distance qualifier was Oulgout in the men’s 800-meter race. Oulgout placed fifth overall on Saturday with a PR of 1:50.79 seconds. Sophomore Cedrik Flipo (Beloeil, Quebec) finished just outside of qualifying range with a time of 1:52.24 for 10th. In the women’s 800-meter race, Hayes finished two seconds under her season best at 2:21.96.

DISTANCE

The first track event of the day for UE was bright and early on Saturday morning as sophomores Samuel Lea (Worcester, England) and Avery Stephens (Newburgh, Ind. / Castle HS) ran in the 10K race. Both had top 10 finishes in the event as Lea had the fastest time at 31:06.35 for sixth place, and only seven seconds off the current program record set in 2004. While Stephens finished ninth in the women’s race with a PR of 38:57.23.

THROWS

Freshman Emma Bertel (Franklin, Ind. / Franklin Community HS) was the first Evansville thrower to compete on Saturday. Bertel placed 16th in the women’s discus with a throw of 35.66 meters, only a little over a meter of her season best throw. In the men’s discus, sophomores Cole Johnson (Salem, Ill. / Salem Community HS) and Tyler Cherne (Boardman, Ohio / Boardman HS) finished back-to-back with throws of 40.68 and 39.95 meters.

* UE's Rumsey earns All-MVC Honors

ST. LOUIS – Senior outfielder Ty Rumsey (Evansville, Ind. / North HS) has been recognized by Missouri Valley Conference head coaches for his play this season.

On Tuesday morning, the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) announced its baseball All-Conference teams for the 2025 season. In a vote of the league’s 10 head coaches, Rumsey was recognized on two separate teams. Rumsey is one of 15 players named to the All-MVC Second Team and one of only three outfielders on the team. Rumsey was also recognized as one of the nine best defensive players in the Valley as part of the All-Defensive Team.

Rumsey had a breakout season at the plate for the Purple Aces in 2025. The senior led UE at the plate batting .333 on the season with 71 hits in 213 total at-bats that included 10 doubles, two triples, and four home runs. Rumsey was one of only two players on the Evansville roster to appear in every game of the 2025 season and was the only Ace to start every single game. Along with his iron man streak, Rumsey was a terror on the base paths, leading the league in stolen bases with 31 bags, the most by a UE player in 15 years since Eric Stamets set the Evansville program record with 43 in 2010.

Along with a strong year at the plate, Rumsey was a gem in the field for the Aces. He was third on the UE roster for putouts with 156 in 54 games to average just under two putouts a game. Rumsey also assisted on two other putouts with 160 catches on the season. The senior only was charged with two errors in 54 games for a fielding percentage of .988. Rumsey did not make an error in the final 19 games of the season and had a 32-game streak without an error earlier in the year.

Along with announcing the All-MVC teams, the Valley released its specialty awards for the 2025 season. Missouri State’s second baseman Nick Rodriguez was named the Joe Carter Player of the Year and was one of three Bears recognized with specialty awards. Also earning honors for Missouri State was utility player Max Knight as the Co-Newcomer of the Year and shortstop Tyler Epstein as the Defensive Player of the Year.

The Pitcher of the Year went to Belmont’s Joe Ruzicka while the other Co-Newcomer of the Year was UIC’s Luke Nowak. The Valley also had Co-Freshman of the Year in 2025 as Indiana State’s Jeremy Martinez and Murray State’s Conner Cunningham shared the honor. Murray State Head Coach Dan Skirka was named the Dan Callahan Coach of the Year for his first recognition in the Missouri Valley Conference.

* UE women's basketball adds Mireia Mustaros

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Mireia Mustaros has been announced as the newest signee to the University of Evansville women's basketball team by head coach Robyn Scherr.

When Mireia visited campus, it was an instant fit! I felt like she was already part of our team,” exclaimed Scherr. “One of the things that drew me to Mireia was her desire to be pushed and challenged.

“She played for a coach with high standards at Odessa, and her game grew in her two years there. I love that she brings us size and versatility in the post with her ability to play inside and on the perimeter. She is a player who will continue to improve, and I am thrilled to be her coach!”

Mustaros has spent the past two seasons at Odessa College at the JUCO level. Last season, the Wranglers finished the year at 19-9 overall with a 10-6 conference record. Mustaros helped the Wranglers to the NJCAA Region V Women's Basketball Tournament. She was also part of the 2023-24 Wrangler team that was the NJCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Runner-Ups as they lost by only a basket to nearby Wabash Valley CC.

In her two years with Odessa, Mustaros appeared in 60 games with 44 starts. As a freshman, Mustaros averaged 15.8 minutes, 4.7 points, 2.7 rebounds, 0.9 steals, and 0.3 blocks a game. In her sophomore season, Mustaros raised her game averages to 21.4 minutes, 5.1 points, and 4.4 rebounds. The sophomore had a career-high game against Trinidad State College on Nov. 2, 2024, scoring 12 points by shooting 87.5% from the floor and adding six rebounds. Her best rebounding game came Feb. 24, 2025, as she pulled down 10 boards against Clarendon College.

Originally from Mataró, Barcelona, Mustaros played for Unió Esportiva Mataró prior to moving to the United States for school. U.E. Mataró competes in Second FEB under the Spanish Basketball Federation and has teams for kids as young as 14 all the way up to their U20 teams. Mustaros is also part of PickUs Education, a consultancy group that helps international basketball players find programs in the United States to grow both their game and academics. Former Ace Júlia Palomo (La Seu d’Urgell, Spain) was also a member of PickUs Education.

“I chose UE because from the first moment I felt it was the perfect place to grow as a person and as a player,” says Mustaros. “I loved the welcoming environment and the commitment of the coaches to the development of each player. I felt an immediate connection with the girls and the staff, and I am very excited to start this new stage in a place like UE.”

Mustaros will join Evansville over the summer as the team conducts workouts in June and July. The Purple Aces officially begin the basketball season with their first official practice in late September of 2025.

* Aces baseball ties series with Bradley in a home run extravaganza

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Fighting for its postseason hopes, the University of Evansville baseball team earned a massive win over the Bradley Braves 12-7 on Friday afternoon.

The Purple Aces kept their postseason dreams alive this afternoon with their victory against Bradley. UE’s bats connected in every inning but the first to record 12 hits for its third straight game with 10 hits or more. Almost half of Evansville’s hits were put into play by graduate catcher Matt Flaherty (Lake Zurich, Ill. / Bellarmine), who had a perfect day at the plate, going 5 of 5 with two home runs and five RBIs.

The Aces had to work out of trouble early in the first as the defense got out of a bases-loaded jam on a pop-up to Cal McGinnis. It was a quick game from there as UE went down in order in the bottom of the first, and Bradley did the same in the top of the second. Evansville got its first hit of the afternoon in the second from Flaherty with a single to left center.

Flaherty’s single sparked the offense in the bottom of the third as the Aces scored the first runs of the game. Shortstop Drew McConnell (Blue Springs, Mo. / Blue Springs HS) began the frame with a walk. Two at-bats later, left fielder Charlie Longmeier (Seymour, Ind. / Seymour HS) put a double into left as the Braves outfield lost the ball in the sun.

Both runners came home moments later as McGinnis crushed the first pitch he saw past the right field wall for his fourth home run of the year. UE’s 3-0 lead only lasted for the rest of the third inning as Bradley was able to answer with a two-run shot of their own to begin the fourth. The home runs continued in the fourth, but this time it was Evansville who had the long balls.

Flaherty led off the frame with his fourth homer of the year on a rocket to left field. The ball left German American Bank Field at 106 miles per hour to make it a 4-2 game. The Aces’ next two batters flew out to left field, as it was McConnell who found the hot bat. The freshman put a home run out to the opposite side to give UE another three-run lead.

But the home run train wasn’t done yet as the Braves put together back-to-back home runs, getting the game back within one. Bradley tied the game up in the fifth with two outs on the board as a long single through the right side brought home the runner at second base.  The Braves took their first lead of the game in the fifth as they brought in two more runs with a bases-clearing double.

Evansville erased the Bradley lead in the bottom of the fifth with one swing of the bat. The Aces got two walks in the first four batters, giving Flaherty another big hitting opportunity. And the graduate catcher came through with another home run, this time past the center field wall to put UE back up by one.

Neither side scored in the sixth as Evansville added another hit to its line. The Braves went down in order to begin the seventh while the Aces' offense had their best offensive inning yet. UE’s first three batters all reached base as right fielder Harrison Taubert (Casper, Wyo. / Northeast CC) became the leading batter to be hit by pitches in the MVC to begin the frame.

Back-to-back singles from Rumsey and Flaherty added another run as Taubert hit the gas to get across home. First base Jake McGhee (Fenton, Mo. / Christian Brothers Academy) had a close sacrifice bunt that put both Rumsey and Flaherty into scoring position. Designated hitter Aaron Nehls (Evansville, Ind. / North HS) followed up the bunt with his first hit of the afternoon, doubling to left center and scoring Rumsey.

Evansville wasn’t done there as ninth-hole hitter Drew Howard (Ferdinand, Ind. / Forest Park HS) had his first knock of the game. Howard also found the left side hole, scoring both Flaherty and Nehls to give the Aces a five-run advantage with two outs on the board. UE loaded the bases with two walks but a strikeout from Taubert kept it at a 12-7 score.

It was a quick inning on defense for Evansville as Bradley went down in order. The Aces had another chance to extend their lead in the bottom of the eighth with the bases loaded. But UE’s next three batters went down in order, sending the game to its final frame. The Braves were able to add a run in the top of the ninth on a throwing error from McConnell as he tried to get an out at first for a double play. But Evansville held strong to earn the 12-8 win.

Reliever Kellen Roberts (Monroe, Mich. / Monroe HS) earned his first win of the season on Friday, pitching for 1.2 innings while allowing only a run with a strikeout. Closer Owen Byberg (Barrie, Ontario), in his first appearance on the mound in over a month, earned his first save with the Aces as he pitched for 2.2 innings without letting an earned run across and striking out three batters.

UE will need to win tomorrow’s regular-season finale against Bradley to make the 2025 MVC Tournament next week. Evansville will be honoring its seven seniors as well on Saturday in the program’s annual Senior Day game. First pitch from Charles H. Braun Stadium is set for 1 p.m., while Senior Day honors will begin at 12:40 p.m.

* Baseball ends season with a high-scoring loss to Bradley

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Coming back from an eight-run deficit didn’t keep the University of Evansville baseball team in its final game of the 2025 season, falling to the Bradley Braves 23-11.

The Purple Aces came back from an early eight-run deficit on Saturday afternoon. But 12 unanswered runs from Bradley after UE tied the game brought Evansville’s season to a close in eight innings. The Aces were led on offense by sophomore left fielder Charlie Longmeier (Seymour, Ind. / Seymour HS) with three hits and five RBIs in four at-bats.

The Braves jumped out to a large lead early with two bases loaded walked in runs, a grand slam, and another home run. UE went to the plate for the first time that afternoon, already back eight runs. Evansville’s offense answered with two runs of its own in the bottom frame of the first.

The Aces had two hits to start as Longmeier singled through the right side and second baseman Cal McGinnis (Kimberly, Wis. / Bradley) doubled to right center. A sacrifice fly from catcher Matt Flaherty (Lake Zurich, Ill. / Bellarmine) scored Longmeier while a sacrifice fly double play from right fielder Harrison Taubert (Casper, Wyo. / Northeast CC) brought home McGinnis.

Both teams went down in order during the second inning. The Braves added another run to their total in the top of the third on an RBI double. UE’s offense kept answering as Evansville put two more hits into play in the bottom of the third.

Longmeier hit his only triple of the year in his second at-bat to score third baseman Drew Howard (Ferdinand, Ind. / Forest Park HS), who led off the inning with a single of his own. Longmeier then made his way home on the next play as an error from Bradley’s shortstop on a knock from McGinnis gave him time to score the Aces' fourth run.

The game continued at a back-and-forth pace as the Braves added a run in the fourth on a walk and two singles. UE added two more runs of its own as first baseman Ben Stuart (Mason, Ohio / William Mason HS) and Howard crossed on two singles and a double. Bradley again added a single run in the top of the fifth at German American Bank Field to widen its lead back to five runs.

Evansville had its biggest offensive inning in the bottom of the fifth as it looked like the tides were turning its way. The Aces sent eight hitters to the plate through the frame, starting the bottom of the fifth with three straight hits. Taubert added his eighth home run of the year with a moon shot to right, scoring himself and outfielder Ty Rumsey (Evansville, Ind. / North HS).

Designated hitter Aaron Nehls (Evansville, Ind. / North HS) followed up the homer with a double to left, putting UE right back into scoring position. Howard reached base for his third straight plate appearance after two quick outs for Evansville. It was Longmeier who had the biggest hit of the inning, as he hit a no-doubter out of left field, tying the game at 11-11.

But the Aces weren’t able to score again in the final three innings of the game as they didn’t get past the batter’s box. It was all the Braves as they added six hits to score 12 runs with help from two errors and nine free bases. UE sent its two seniors who didn’t start the game to the plate in the bottom of the eighth for their final at-bats in an Evansville uniform. Neither Evan Waggoner (Bedford, Ind. / North Bedford Lawrence HS) nor Kevin McCormick (Orland Park, Ill. / St. Laurence HS) reached first base, but both made contact with a deep flyout to center and a close groundout to third.

The Aces end the 2025 season with a 17-37 overall record and a 10-17 MVC record. UE says goodbye to seven members of its roster this summer in Rumsey, McGinnis, Flaherty, Stuart, Waggoner, McCormick, and pitcher Jacob Jarvis (Farmington, Mo. / Jefferson College). Combined the six position players accounted for 222 hits, 45 doubles, 14 home runs, 132 RBIs, 114 runs scored, 73 walks, and 721 at-bats. While Jarvis pitched 10 innings in 10 appearances, with seven strikeouts.

* Baseball to finish 2025 regular season hosting Bradley

The Purple Aces capped off their non-conference matchups on Tuesday with a massive 10-run win over the Southern Indiana Screaming Eagles. UE was able to tie the series up with the 18-8 win that lasted almost four hours, as Evansville didn't score until the sixth inning. Senior infielder Cal McGinnis had a big game at the plate on Tuesday, with his fifth game of the year with three hits. He now leads the Aces in multi-hit games along with senior center fielder Ty Rumsey, as both have had 20 games with multiple hits. Along with the three hits the prior evening, McGinnis scored two runs and brought in another.

UE has a big series ahead of them as they welcome the Bradley Braves to German American Bank Field. Evansville is currently ninth in the Missouri Valley Conference standings and a game behind Bradley for the final spot in the MVC Tournament. If the Aces win two of three games this week, they'll clinch a spot in the postseason with the series tiebreakers over both the Braves and seventh-place Indiana State. If the playoff race comes down to a three-way tie between the teams, UE would get the highest seed at seventh while Bradley would take the eighth seed as they won their series over the Sycamores.

The Braves come into the final series of the regular season having won five of their last six Valley games, including a three-game sweep over the Valparaiso Beacons. Bradley has made quite the turnaround after losing its first 11 games of conference play to get back into the postseason race. The Braves have won 10 MVC games this season for their best conference record since 2022, when they won 11 Valley games. Bradley is currently led on the field by senior utility player Bobby Atkinson, who is one of only two Braves batting above .300 at .339 with 57 hits. Along with Atkinson, junior infielder Timmy O'Brian is a threat at the plate as he is currently fourth in the MVC in home runs with 16 in 47 games played.

After his big game on Tuesday night, Evansville is now led on offense by McGinnis with a .330 batting average in 44 games. The senior has collected 59 hits this season with nine doubles and three home runs. Along with having a team-best batting average, McGinnis is the third toughest batter to strike out in the MVC, only striking out once in ever 9.9 at-bats. He is closely followed by fellow senior Ty Rumsey, who has batted .324 while appearing in all 51 games for the Aces so far. Rumsey also leads the Valley in stolen bases with 30 and is also ranked 27th in Division I.

UE will honor seven seniors on Saturday afternoon in its annual Senior Day game to close the 2025 regular season. Before Saturday's 2 p.m. pitch from Charles H. Braun Stadium, Evansville will recognize outfielder Ty Rumsey, infielders Cal McGinnis, Ben Stuart, and Kevin McCormick, catchers Evan Waggoner and Matt Flaherty, and pitcher Jacob Jarvis for their time with the program. All seven players have either exhausted their eligibility or have foregone an extra year of eligibility after earning a degree from the University of Evansville.

* UE baseball drops first game to Bradley

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – To begin the final series of the regular season the University of Evansville gave up a big inning to the Bradley Braves to fall 9-4.

A big top of the sixth for Bradley sunk the Purple Aces in their first game of the weekend. Despite consistent hitting for UE throughout the game, Evansville left too many runners stranded to get runs across home plate. The Aces left 15 on base for the first time in two seasons on Thursday night. UE’s offense was led by outfielder Ty Rumsey (Evansville, Ind. / North HS) and catcher Matt Flaherty (Lake Zurich, Ill. / Bellarmine) with three hits each. Four separate Evansville batters drove in runs in the loss.

"We couldn't get the big hit with runners in scoring position tonight as we left 15 runners on," said Head Coach Wes Carroll after the loss. "Our back is against the wall now.  We understand the situation and will show some fight behind [Kevin] Reed tomorrow."

The teams traded blows early as Bradley struck first with only two hits in the top of the first. It took as much time for the Aces to score their first run with singles from lead-off man Charlie Longmeier (Seymour, Ind. / Seymour HS), right fielder Harrison Taubert (Casper, Wyo. / Northeast CC), and center fielder Ty Rumsey (Evansville, Ind. / North HS). UE was able to double its score as catcher Matt Flaherty (Lake Zurich, Ill. / Bellarmine) beat out a double play ball to bring Taubert home.

The Braves were able to tie the game up to begin the second with a solo home run. After the second inning, the offenses were quiet as it became mostly a defensive game. Evansville’s defense had an impressive top of the fourth after giving up two early hits. Third baseman Drew Howard (Ferdinand, Ind. / Forest Park HS) had a diving lineout to get the first out. The Aces then turned a double play from starting pitcher Kenton Deverman, who turned a popup into a second out at first base.

UE added at least a hit every inning going into the fifth, when they were able to break the tie. Rumsey led off the inning with a ground-rule double to right center. He scored three at-bats later when designated hitter Brodie Peart (Markham, Ontario) put a knock into right center, making it a 3-2 game. But Evansville’s lead didn’t last for long as the Bradley offense came alive in the top of the sixth with four hits, scoring five runs.

The Aces got one back in the bottom of the sixth as a lead-off walk to Longmeier became a run on an RBI single from Rumsey. UE’s offense had another opportunity in the bottom of the seventh after blanking the Braves in the top frame. Evansville loaded the bases on two walks and a single. But second baseman Cal McGinnis (Kimberly, Wis. / Bradley) hit straight to the pitcher for a 1-2-3 double play, ending the inning.

Bradley added two more runs in the top of the eighth with two hits and a walk. The Aces added two more hits in the bottom of the frame with two outs on the board. Both runners were left stranded for UE’s last opportunity on the base paths. Evansville was struck out the side in the bottom of the ninth for the 9-4 final score.

The Aces will need to win the final two games of the regular season to make the MVC Tournament. UE will get its chance tomorrow afternoon at 12 p.m. from Charles H. Braun Stadium.
