* Softball falls in series finale

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – For the second game in a row, the University of Evansville softball team staged a late rally, but Northern Iowa fended off the challenge to take a 12-9 win over the Purple Aces at Tri-State Orthopaedics Field at Cooper Stadium.

Evansville rallied twice in the late innings, however, a grand slam in the sixth lifted UNI to the win.  UE finished the day with 10 hits as Niki Bode went 3-4 with three runs and two RBI.  Jess Willsey was 2-5 with a home run.

Picking up four walks in the top of the first, UNI took the early 1-0 lead.  It did not take long for the Purple Aces to respond as they scored three runs to take the lead.  Taylor Howe and Niki Bode each singled while Jess Willsey reached on an error to load the bases with one out.  Eliza Piggott brought in the first run of the game on a ground out before a 2-run double by Brooke Voss made it a 3-1 game.

UNI bounced back to retake a 7-3 lead in the second frame as Drew Hinrichs hit a 3-run home run and Katelyn Callahan added a 2-run shot both with two outs.  Willsey got UE a run closer with a solo home run in the third and the Aces looked to get closer as two runners reached with two outs in the fourth before the Panthers got out of the inning unscathed.  Northern Iowa hit its third homer of the game when a solo shot pushed the lead to 8-4 in the fifth.

Bode and Willsey led off with singles in the fifth before Voss reached on a 1-out walk to load the bases for Miriah Powell.  Powell reached on a single off the pitcher to bring in Bode to make it an 8-5 game.  Unfortunately, Northern Iowa belted a grand slam in the sixth to put the game out of reach.

Despite the deficit, UE continued to battle as Bode add an RBI double while Eliza Piggott hit a sacrifice fly to make it a 5-run game.  In the seventh, Morgan Adams and Bode had RBIs as UE looked to rally once again, but UNI hung on to take the 12-9 win.  Anna Wischnowski tossed a complete game for the Panthers on the way to her 7th win of the season.  Elle Jarrett took the loss allowing five runs, two earned, in 1 2/3 innings of work.

Up next for UE is a 3-game series at Missouri State next weekend.

* Aces drop series at Samford

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The University of Evansville baseball team fell in its final game against the Samford Bulldogs in a 13-1 loss.

The Purple Aces had a tough time in their final game against Samford on Sunday afternoon. UE’s offense connected on four hits with five walks while the pitching staff had five strikeouts. Four separate Evansville players had a hit while catcher Matt Flaherty (Lake Zurich, Ill. / Bellarmine) had the only extra-base hit with a double.

The Purple Aces struck first on Sunday afternoon as right fielder Harrison Taubert (Casper, Wyo. / Northeast CC) reached on a fielding error and second baseman Cal McGinnis (Kimberly, Wis. / Bradley) singled up the middle. Taubert scored on the next at-bat as left fielder Charlie Longmeier (Seymour, Ind. / Seymour HS) had his second straight game with a hit on a long single to right center.

The Bulldogs responded immediately, scoring five runs in five at-bats in the bottom of the first. Samford hit two home runs off UE starting pitcher Kevin Reed (Martinsville, Ind. / Martinsville HS) for four runs while a double to left center scored the lead-off walk. After the home runs Reed settled in for Evansville getting a popup and two strikeouts to end the first.

Flaherty had a big start to the second inning for the Aces with only his second double of the season. UE loaded the bases with two walks but with two outs on the board, Evansville didn’t find the hit to bring a run in as McGinnis ground out to second. Samford made it a six-run ballgame in the bottom of the second with a sacrifice fly and a third home run. The Aces made a pitching change to close out the second as right-hander Drew Fieger (Fort Mitchell, Ky. / Lincoln Trail CC) helped get two putouts for UE.

Designated hitter Aaron Nehls (Evansville, Ind. / North HS) had Evansville’s fourth hit of the day in the top of the third after the inning began with two outs. Nehls had a single to short and reached second base on a wild pitch. A dropped third strike stranded the sophomore at second to go to the bottom of the third inning.

The Bulldogs added their eighth run in the bottom of the third on two singles a ground out and a fly out. The Aces had a walk and a stolen base in the top of the fourth while the defense shut down Samford with its first three up and three down inning of the game. UE’s defense also took down the Bulldogs without a run in the fifth on its eighth double play of the year. Evansville’s offense went down in order in the top of the sixth while Samford added two more runs.

Heading into the seventh down by nine runs the Aces were facing a shortened game. UE started the inning with center fielder Ty Rumsey (Evansville, Ind. / North HS) getting hit by a pitch to get on base. Rumsey made it around to third on a wild pitch and a passed ball as Evansville’s next two batters struck out. The Aces got two more runners on to load the bases but as happened in the second a groundout ended UE’s chance at scoring.

Evansville made defensive changes in the outfield as Rumsey’s hit by pitch earlier was a hard hit to the leg. The Aces defense began the bottom of the seventh with a lineout to shortstop Drew McConnell (Blue Springs, Mo. / Blue Springs HS). But the Bulldogs took the game in its next three at-bats as their fifth home run of the game scored three runs.

UE returns to its home state for a midweek game on Tuesday at Indiana. Evansville will take on the Hoosiers in the first game of a home-and-home series on March 18. First pitch from Bart Kaufman Field is set for 5 p.m. CT.

* Aces drop doubleheader to UNI

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Friday’s Missouri Valley Conference doubleheader saw Northern Iowa finish with a pair of victories over the University of Evansville softball team at Tri-State Orthopaedics Field at Cooper Stadium.

Game 1 – UNI 7, UE 2

With the scored tied at 1-1, Northern Iowa scored six runs in the top of the fifth inning to pull away for a 7-2 win in Friday’s MVC opener.

After UNI left two runners on in the top of the first, the Aces had a scoring threat in the bottom of the frame before a baserunner got thrown out at the plate for the final out.  Kate Ridgway pitched out of another jam in the top of the second with the Panthers leaving the bases loaded.  In the top of the third, the Panthers finally broke through with the first run of the afternoon.

Evansville tied the score in the bottom of the 4th when Brooke Voss scored on a Panther error.  She reached on a leadoff single before a pair of bunts sent her to third.  Unfortunately, UNI erupted for six runs in the top of the fifth to retake the lead.

Abby Bode hit a solo home run in the bottom of the 5th but that would be the final as UNI took the game by a score of 7-2.  Anna Wischnowski earned the win for the Panthers, throwing the full game with two runs, one earned, crossing the plate.  Ridgway took the loss allowing seven runs, five earned, in 4 1/3 innings.  Willsey and Eliza Piggott led UE with two hits apiece.

Game 2 – UNI 14, UE 13

Miriah Powell had a career-high four RBI while Taylor Howe added three as a furious comeback attempt fell short with UNI holding on for a 14-13 win.

Building off the momentum from taking the win in the opener, the Panthers hit a solo home run in the top half of the 1st inning.  They added to it in the second with a grand slam to go up 5-0.  They looked to add more with runners on second and third with one out before Sydney Weatherford came on in relief to record the final two outs.

Eliza Piggott belted her fifth home run of the season in the bottom of the second to cut into the deficit.  Following a scoreless third frame, the Panthers pushed the lead to 7-1 on a 2-run home run.

Looking for a rally, the Aces put the first two runners on in the fourth as Piggott singled while Brooke Voss reached on a walk.  Next up to the plate was Taylor Howe, who came through with a 3-run home to make it a 7-4 game.  Despite the rally by UE, the Panthers plated two more runs in the fifth and threatened to add more, but Cassidy Gall recorded the final out as they stranded the bases loaded.

Evansville did not give up as they got two runs closer in the bottom of the fifth.  A sac fly by Piggott and an RBI single from Miriah Powell cut the UNI lead to 9-6, however, just as fast as UE made its way back, Northern Iowa countered with three more runs.  Powell struck again with a 3-run double in the bottom of the 6th as UE stormed back within three once again.

Down to its final three outs, the Aces staged one final rally.  With one out, Morgan Adams hit a long ball to left to make it a 2-run game.  Jess Willsey followed with a single before Piggott doubled down the right field line to put runners on second and third with one away.  Brooke Voss hit a long sacrifice fly to right to bring UE within one but UNI picked up the final out to clinch the game.

Sunday’s series finale is set for a 12 p.m. first pitch.

* Longmeier records first collegiate home run as UE baseball drops doubleheader at Samford

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The University of Evansville baseball team had its fifth player of the year get a hit out of the park but didn’t pick up a victory in a doubleheader with the Samford Bulldogs.

The Purple Aces weren’t able to stop the red-hot Samford Bulldogs on Friday who have now won four of their last five games. UE’s offense kept up early in the first game but only held the Bulldogs from scoring in two innings for a 10-4 loss. Samford jumped out to an early lead in the second game and held on through seven innings for the 6-2 final score as the teams agreed to only play seven in the second game of the day.

Designated hitter Aaron Nehls (Evansville, Ind. / North HS) had a day for the Aces going four-of-six for a .667 batting average. Infielders Charlie Longmeier (Seymour, Ind. / Seymour HS) and Drew Howard (Ferdinand, Ind. / Forest Park HS) had two RBIs each for UE while Nehls was the only Evansville batter to score multiple runs.

“Not good enough right now to win games but it's not because of a lack of effort,” said Head Coach Wes Carroll on Friday. “Sunday will be a great opportunity to get competitive in all three aspects of the game.”

Game 1 – UE 4, SAM 10

It was a quiet first inning as the Aces went down in order and Samford stranded two batters that walked. But the first would be only one of three innings without a run scored in the game. The Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead after the second on a double that became the scoring run.

UE answered in the top of the third as Nehls led off with a triple and scored on an RBI groundout from third baseman Ben Stuart (Mason, Ohio / William Mason HS). But Samford got the lead right back in the bottom of the third from a sacrifice fly after their second batter hit a double to get into scoring position.

Evansville’s offense went silent for the next two innings as the Bulldogs grew their lead to five runs. Samford scored a run in the fourth on two singles and a two-run homer in the fifth made it a 6-1 game halfway through. The Aces got back on the board in the top of the sixth as Howard led off with a walk and outfielder Ty Rumsey (Evansville, Ind. / North HS) put a single into center. Howard scored two batters later to make it 6-2.

The Bulldogs answered with two runs in the bottom of the sixth on a single and a throwing error after a hit into left field. UE made up for the two runs in the top of the seventh as catcher Matt Flaherty (Lake Zurich, Ill. / Bellarmine) began the inning with a walk. Nehls then had his second hit of the game to put Flaherty at third while another walk loaded the bases. With the bases loaded Howard put a two RBI double into the right corner for an 8-4 game.

That would be the last runs Evansville scored in the first game of the afternoon. Samford added two more runs in the bottom of the seventh on two hits and a walk. The Aces had strong chances to start the eighth and ninth as infielder Cal McGinnis (Kimberly, Wis. / Bradley) had a lead off double and Nehls had a lead off single. But neither runner came home as UE fell to the Bulldogs 10-4 in game one.

Game 2 – UE 2, SAM 6

Rumsey led off the second game of the day with a single to second. He didn’t stay on base long as Rumsey was caught trying to steal second base and the next two Evansville batters went down in order. Samford began the bottom of the first in similar fashion but took an early lead on a walk with the bases loaded. The Bulldogs added one more run before the opening frame was over on a passed ball.

Nehls had his fourth hit of the day in the top of the second with a single to right. But with two Aces outs already on the board Nehls would be stranded at second. UE’s defense took down Samford in order to quickly close out the inning. The Bulldogs did add two runs in the bottom of the third on a two-run homer to right center to make it a 4-0 game.

Evansville broke the shutout in the top of the fourth as right fielder Harrison Taubert (Casper, Wyo. / Northeast CC) opened with a single up the middle. Taubert made his way up to third on a flyout and an infield ground out. He was then brought home to score the Aces' first run of the game when Longmeier reached first on a fielding error. Samford got the scored run back in the bottom of the inning as a walk followed by a single put a Bulldog runner on third. The runner was then able to score for Samford on a wild pitch bringing the lead back to four runs.

It was a quiet fifth inning for both teams with no scoring and two walks for UE. But it was again Longmeier who had a big play for Evansville in the top of the sixth. After two strikeouts to open the inning Longmeier attacked the first ball he saw launching it past left-center for his first career home run. With 5-2 on the board, Nehls walked in the at-bat following Longmeier’s homer. But the Aces next batter ground out to third ending the top of the sixth.

The Bulldogs scored their sixth and final run of the game in the bottom of the sixth as their first batter walked. The Samford runner scored three at-bats later on a fielder’s choice after making it all the way to third on a wild pitch and a stolen base. UE went to the top of the seventh needing four runs to keep the game going. Rumsey connected on his second hit of the game in the seventh with two outs on the board. He would be stranded at first to end the day as Taubert struck out looking for the final out of the seventh.

With weather expected in the Birmingham area on Saturday, the series finale won’t be until Sunday afternoon. First pitch of the third game in the series is set for 1 p.m. from Joe Lee Griffin Field on March 16.
