Aces women's basketball plays final road game, returns for weekend in-state matchup
|
|
The Purple Aces had another tough weekend on the road with double-digit losses at both Valparaiso and UIC. UE still is looking for a road win this season, having won all four of their games either at Meeks Family Fieldhouse or the Ford Center in Evansville. This will be the Aces' last chance for a road win as they travel to Cedar Falls, Iowa to take on the Northern Iowa Panthers.
It will be a tall task for UE on Thursday as the program hasn't won a game in the McLeod Center in 17 years. The last time Evansville was able to say it had a victory in Cedar Falls was February 2, 2008. The Aces won by five points then and only pulled away in the final three minutes of the game. The 2008 win is one of only two for UE in the McLeod Center since it opened in 2006.
Three of the Missouri Valley Conference's best players at creating turnovers will be on the floor during Thursday night's game. Evansville senior guard Júlia Palomo currently leads the Aces in steals with 47 on the season and 1.7 per game. Palomo is eighth in the Valley for steals while UNI junior forward Ryley Gobel is fifth with 56 season steals to average 2.1 a game. UNI senior guard Maya McDermott is also in the top 10 in the MVC for steals, with 39 steals this season for 1.4 steals a game. The Panthers are 14-13 overall on the season and 9-7 in Valley play. They are led by a trio of players in McDermott, Gobel, and senior Kayba Laube as the three average double figures a game.
UE will then host a big in-state game with Indiana State on Saturday, March 1. Evansville will play a rare Saturday night game in Meeks Family Fieldhouse against the Sycamores as the two teams are in the hunt for better seeding at the 2025 Credit Union 1 MVC Women's Basketball Tournament. In the team's first meeting in Terre Haute back in January Indiana State dominated the game in a 90-74 victory. The Aces will hope to do the same on their home court heading into its final three games of the regular season.
Sophomore forward Maggie Hartwig has been dominating on both sides of the ball for UE in Valley play. Over the weekend Hartwig led Evansville on offense and defense during both games, averaging a double-double with 21.5 points and 12 rebounds a game. With back-to-back double-doubles last weekend, Hartwig now has nine on the season and is tied for third-most in the Valley with Drake's Anna Miller and Illinois State's Nevaeh Thomas. Nine double-doubles is the most by an Aces player since forward Abby Feit had 13 double-doubles during her junior season in 2021-22. |

Aces baseball struggles with red-hot Kentucky offense
|
|
LEXINGTON, Ky. – The University of Evansville baseball team fell behind early at Kentucky and couldn’t recover in a 24-3 loss on Tuesday afternoon.
Half of the Purple Aces roster saw the field in a midweek loss to the Kentucky Wildcats. UE used eight pitchers in seven innings as only one stayed on the mound for more than an inning. On offense, two players accounted for Evansville’s four hits as senior center fielder Ty Rumsey (Evansville, Ind. / North HS) and freshman shortstop Drew McConnell (Blue Springs, Mo. / Blue Springs HS) had two each.
Rumsey had an early hit for the Aces but was the only batter to make it on base in the first. It was a long bottom of the first inning for UE starter freshman RJ James (Toronto, Canada) as Kentucky’s offense loaded the bases with three straight singles. James threw a strikeout to the Wildcats fourth batter and drew a potential ground out from the fifth. But a throwing error from first over to third gave Kentucky enough time to send two runners home.
The Wildcats scored on the next two at-bats with a double down the left line and a home run over the center field wall had UK up by six with six hits in eight at-bats. Kentucky added one more run in the first on a sacrifice fly three batters later before Evansville’s defense ended the inning with a groundout. The Aces brought in junior RHP Owen Byberg (Barrie, Ontario, Canada) in the bottom of the second after the offense went down in order.
Byberg worked quickly in his first inning on the mound by getting the side with two strikeouts and a groundout. UE had a better offensive inning in the top of the third as the first two batters of the inning made it on base on a hit by pitch and a single. With two on, Rumsey connected on his second hit of the afternoon to help put Evansville on the board as catcher Kaleb Wilkey (Manhattan, Ill. / Lincoln-Way West HS) crossed home plate.
The Aces' next batter right fielder Harrison Taubert (Casper, Wyo. / Northeast CC) was walked by the Wildcats starter to load up the bases. Infielder Cal McGinnis (Kimberly, Wis. / Bradley) followed up Taubert’s walk with a sacrifice fly to score McConnell, making it a 7-2 game with two outs. UE ended the offensive half of the inning during the next at-bat.
Byberg added two more strikeouts in the bottom of the third inning. But Kentucky added back a run on a fielding error before the third ended. The Wildcats extended their lead again in the bottom of the fourth with a lead-off home run, two doubles, and a sacrifice fly. Right-handed reliever Kellen Roberts (Monroe, Mich. / Monroe HS) took the mound midway through the fourth allowing a hit and two runs early as it became an 11-2 game. Roberts walked UK’s next three batters but got out of the jam with a strikeout in four pitches.
Evansville got a run back early in the fifth as McConnell hit his first career home run to the Aces bullpen in right field. UE got another runner to first base on a hit by pitch but had three batters either strikeout or groundout to end the top of the fifth. Freshman LHP Jack Wills (Shelbyville, Ky. / Shelby County HS) made his debut on the mound for Evansville in the bottom of the fifth, only an hour southeast of his hometown.
Wills struggled early as the first two batters he faced hit doubles into right center to add another run. The Wildcats widened their lead to 12 runs in the bottom of the fifth, scoring four runs on three hits while eight batters came to the plate. The Aces didn’t answer in the top of the sixth as they went down in order to a new Kentucky pitcher.
Redshirt junior Parker MacCauley (Paducah, Ky. / Tennessee Tech) took over for Wills in the bottom of the sixth. MacCauley added his fourth strikeout of the year facing his second batter. But UE struggled on the mound after using four different pitchers in the sixth as the Wildcats added nine runs. It would be first baseman Jake McGhee who ended the inning on the mound for Evansville, forcing a flyout and a strikeout while facing four batters.
The Aces went down in order in the top of the seventh inning to end Tuesday afternoon’s game by the run rule. UE fell to 1-6 on the season with the 24-3 loss at UK as they continue on a month-long road trip. Evansville will play a four-game series at Missouri over the weekend starting with a 5 p.m. game on Friday, February 28. |

UE hosted crosstown rivals USI for a doubleheader on Sunday after canceling a game and postponing one due to snow and cold weather earlier in the weekend. While Evansville lost the first game, they were able to bounce back with a big 13-0 run-rule win in the second game of the day.
UE's big win over the Screaming Eagles on Sunday was powered by a monster fourth inning. In just one half inning Evansville almost went through its lineup twice with 17 at bats. During those at bats, the Aces connected on nine hits, scored 11 runs, and had 14 of the at-bats take first base. UE hasn't scored 11 or more runs in an inning in just under three years. Evansville last put up that many runs in only one inning on March 16, 2022, scoring 12 runs in the top of the sixth at Austin Peay.
Another key factor in Evansville's 13-0 win against USI was sophomore LHP Kevin Reed's (Martinsville, Ind. / Martinsville HS) performance on the mound. Reed pitched all seven innings for the Aces, setting a career-high in innings pitched and strikeouts as the lefty got nine Eagles at the plate. Reed is the first UE pitcher to throw a complete game shutout since 2021 when redshirt sophomore RHP Shane Gray threw seven innings while striking out five batters at Illinois State in a 12-0 win. Reed is also one of only 13 pitchers across Division I baseball to throw a complete game and only one of two in the Missouri Valley Conference.
The Kentucky Wildcats have had an opposite start to the season compared to Evansville. UK has a 4-1 record after two weeks of play this season. The Cats have picked up four wins against two teams the Aces are very familiar with, the Lipscomb Bison and the Belmont Bruins. Kentucky swept Belmont over the weekend, allowing the Bruins to only score six runs in 25 innings across three games as they benefited from solid pitching on the mound. The Cats are in the Top 10 in the nation in five pitching categories including ERA (1.58), hits allowed per nine innings (5.18), shutouts (2), strikeout-to-walk ratio (4.08), and WHIP (0.90).
Tuesday's game at Kentucky is the first of 19 games on the road for the Aces. UE won't return to German American Bank Field at Charles H. Braun Stadium until the end of March for a midweek match-up with Western Kentucky. By the time Evansville returns home the team will have played its first MVC series while visiting nine different ballparks. The Aces were last on such a lengthy road trip in 2022 when they played 15 games away from Evansville from March 9 to March 29. |
