* Racial Violence Lecture Postponed due to Weather

UPDATE: Dr MacLeod's Lecture on Tuesday night has been postponed to a later date due to incoming winter weather.

On Tuesday, February 18 at 6:30 PM in Koch Center 100, Dr. James MacLeod will present a lecture for the Southwestern Indiana Historical Society entitled "A History of Violence. Race Relations in the Evansville Area." In a lecture with over 100 powerful images, Dr. MacLeod will discuss various aspects of racial violence in this region, including 19th century lynchings, the 1903 race riot, and the turbulent 1960s and 1970s.

This event is free and open to the public.

Whether you’re passionate about social justice, cultural representation, or student advocacy, this is a great opportunity to contribute to a powerful and meaningful visual.

* UNIVERSITY OF EVANSVILLE THEATRE PRESENTS CLYDE'S

The University of Evansville Theatre commences its Spring 2025 season with Lynn Nottage’s CLYDE’S. This production opens at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 15, in the May Studio Theatre. Additional performances are at 7:30 p.m., on Feb. 18, 19, 20, 21, 22 and at 2:00 p.m. on Feb. 16, 22, and 23. From the creative and consummate mind of a two-time winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, this razor-sharp comedy explores the inner workings of a roadside sandwich shop and the complicated lives of the denizens who work there. These formerly incarcerated members of the kitchen staff are under the purview of an unyielding chef, and they all embark on an ambitious quest to create the perfect sandwich. What ensues is a riotous but heartwarming story of humanity on the road to redemption. Nominated for the 2022 Tony Award for Best Play, this script was the most-produced play in America in 2022–23.

CLYDE’S is directed by Visiting Assistant Professor Liz Jenkins ‘05. Associate Professor Eric Renschler ’83 serves as the scenic designer; Hilary Rubio ’18, guest artist, serves as the costume designer; Sean Nicholl, guest artist, serves as the lighting designer; Visiting Assistant Professor Jon Robertson serves as the sound designer; Saray Rodríguez Hernández ’27, a sophomore theatre management major from Caracas, Venezuela, is the cultural coordinator;

Professor Diane Brewer serves as dramaturg; Maya Barry ’25, a senior stage management major from Marietta, Ga., is the stage manager, and Visiting Assistant Professor Scott Carpenter ’05 serves as the technical director.

The cast features Brynna Waters, a senior performance major from Brownsburg, Ind., as Clyde; Tomi Akinwande, a junior performance major from Houston, Texas, as Letitia; Quinn McGaugh, a junior performance major from McAlester, Okla., as Jason; Santiago Rueda, a first-year performance major from Garden City, Kan., as Rafael, and Alijah J. Roberson, a junior performance major from Atlanta, Ga., as Montrellous.

Adult ticket prices are $20 and $18 for senior adults, UE employees. and non-UE students. UE students may obtain one free ticket with their student ID by visiting the ticket office. Single tickets may be purchased online at theatre.evansville.edu or by calling the ticket office at 812.488.2031. Open Monday through Friday 12:00–5:00 pm.

* UE Music Conservatory presents Melanie Bacaling

A Chicago native, Melanie Bacaling is currently on the “Stage Directing Staff” at the Metropolitan Opera, and the House Assistant Director at Santa Fe Opera. Most recently her Met productions include Il Trovatore and Aida, and this Spring she will be making her directing debut at Lyric Opera of Chicago with La Boheme. She also has production credits with LA Opera, Boston Lyric Opera, Detroit Opera, Des Moines Metro Opera, Opera Omaha, Washington Concert Opera, Aspen Opera Center, and the Sun Valley Music Festival. She holds a Bachelor of Music in Voice and Bachelor of Science in Psychology from the University of Evansville as well as a Masters of Music in Vocal Performance and Pedagogy from the Boston Conservatory.

* Zerah Priestly Carter Scholarship Now Accepting Applications

The University of Evansville African American Alumni Association is pleased to announce the 2025 Zerah Priestly Carter Endowed Scholarship in honor of Zerah Priestly Carter, the first African American graduate of the University.

This scholarship is awarded annually to deserving African American students pursuing a Bachelor’s degree at UE. These scholarship funds of at least $1,000 annually, are in addition to other financial aid/scholarships awarded to the recipient and are renewable, dependent on academic progress and annual community service. Eligible students are encouraged to apply at this time.

* Sense of Community Survey Launching February 17

As we focus on the future and strive to create a campus where all can thrive, it is vital that we collect timely, high-quality data to guide our decisions and ensure our efforts are grounded in factual evidence. The University of Evansville will send a Sense of Community Survey to all members of our community in partnership with The Higher Education Data Sharing Consortium (HEDS) on February 17.

This survey will help us better understand how students and employees experience community on campus. Your feedback will help shape a more welcoming environment for all.

How to Participate:

  • A survey link will be emailed to all community members this morning.
  • The survey will remain open until March 21.

* UE Reads Volunteers Needed - Paid Positions

UE Reads is a paid work-study position. If you qualify for federal work-study positions and are available on Monday and Tuesday from 3:30 to 5:30, we have positions for two students to work with young students at a community daycare. This position is to encourage reading for enjoyment.

If you are available two afternoons a week, Monday through Thursday, we have openings in area elementary schools to help students with homework and reading. Please contact Kendra Pennington at kp283@evansville.edu for more information.  The pay is good and minimal preparation is required.

Congratulations

* January Employee of the Month - Ted McCoart

Congratulations to Ted McCoart for receiving the Employee of the Month award for January!

Ted took on the Athletic Hall of Fame in November. Not only was the event a success, he hit it out of the park. He has been a key addition to the Alumni and Engagement team working directly with athletic annual giving donors, coaches, and athletics. He was instrumental in the MVC baseball tournament in the spring. Under Ted's leadership, Support Your Sport in November raised over $141,000, more than double in 2023. UE is very lucky to have an employee like Ted.

Ted works in University Advancement as the Assistant Director of Athletics Annual Giving. Share your congrats with Ted when you see him around campus.

Harlaxton Happenings

* Mini Olympics at Harlaxton - June 6-14, 2025 - Reserve Your Spot NOW!

Harlaxton College is excited to invite you to the inaugural Mini Olympics at Harlaxton, an unforgettable summer experience in an enchanting English manor house. This unique program is designed to provide you with a valuable opportunity to inspire, elevate, and empower children through the power of sports while enjoying a beautiful, historic setting.

Inspire+ is Harlaxton College's sponsored charity of the year. They are an independent sports and education charity that changes young people's lives by leading healthier lifestyles through physical and well-being activities. They work with local Olympians and Paralympians to host a three-day Mini Olympics for over 2800 school children from the Grantham area where Harlaxton is located.

This fun event brings children together in non-competitive sports. There are 17 stations, each with a unique activity, and opening and closing ceremonies sponsored by the Royal Opera House. Harlaxton College will have one station, Cheerleading, and participants will teach the children a cheer to perform at the closing ceremonies.

If you choose to join this exciting adventure, you'll fly to London's Heathrow Airport for a June 6 arrival and spend time planning and organizing for the Mini Olympics before the big three-day event that will be followed by an elegant dinner in one of the grand State Rooms at Harlaxton. You'll also have time to tour Harlaxton Manor; explore Grantham's nightlife; enjoy dinner at the Gregory Arms, a traditional British pub; tour local schools, including a prestigious boarding school; spend time in London; and go on a backstage tour of the Royal Opera House before flying back to the USA on June 14.

Harlaxton College is pleased to be accepting applications to teach at the Manor in Fall 2026, and Spring 2027.   These applications are online and can be found by clicking https://pursueharlaxton.evansville.edu/register/teach-with-harlaxton.

Applications for Fall 2026 and Spring 2027 are due on April 1, 2025

Semester applicants will be informed of the status of their application in July 2025.

Semester Applicants:
Semester benefits include room and board for family members at Harlaxton.   Faculty members who wish to bring children and enroll them in the local schools will be assisted in the visa process but will be required to pay any fees for the visa.  These fees are currently approx. $1000 per person and visas are required for every person in the family.   Faculty and families will also be invoiced for health and transportation fees at the Manor for each member of the family and the faculty member.  These fees are approximately $400 per person.

Teaching at Harlaxton is a wonderful experience, and we welcome faculty members for a phenomenal summer or semester abroad.  If you have questions about teaching at Harlaxton and the experience overall, please feel free to email me at hc110@evansville.edu.

Athletics

* Men's basketball set for Wednesday road game at Missouri State

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Three of the next four games will be on the road for the University of Evansville men’s basketball team beginning on Wednesday when the Purple Aces travel to Springfield, Mo. to take on Missouri State.  ESPN+ and the Purple Aces Radio Network will have the broadcast.

Last Time Out

- Playing the first nationally televised home game since since the 2018-19 season, UE rallied late before falling to Bradley by a final score of 80-74 on Saturday

- UE trailed by as many as 21 points in the second half before getting within four

- Tayshawn Comer scored a game-high 23 points while Connor Turnbull posted the best game of his career with 20 points and 13 boards

Trending Upward

- In the Feb. 8 game against Bradley, Connor Turnbull had the game of his career, setting highs in most statistics

- He set career marks in points (20), rebounds (13), FG (7), FGA (12), FT (6), FTA (9), and minutes (33:48) on the way to his first collegiate double-double

- On top of those numbers, he added three more blocks and continues to lead the Valley with 1.92 per game

- His total of 48 blocks ranks 23rd in the country while his average of 1.92 is 27th

- Turnbull’s game against the Braves bested his prior scoring high of 14, which came in the road win at Belmont

On a Roll

- Over the last 12 games, Tayshawn Comer has played as well as anyone in the MVC

- Comer is averaging 20.3 points, 4.4 assists, and 4.2 rebounds per game over that time and leads UE with his season scoring average of 15.6 PPG

- Included in that tally is a career-high 27 points in the win over Murray State, besting his mark of 26 in the road win at SIU

- Against league competition, Comer is averaging 18.8 PPG, which is second

Scouting the Opponent

- Missouri State comes into Wednesday’s match-up with a record of 8-17 while going 1-13 through their first 14 league outings

- The Bears’ MVC win came on Feb. 1 when they defeated Murray State by a final score of 77-56

- Evansville took the first meeting of the season by a final tally of 57-40 on Dec. 29 at the Ford Center

- Dez White is the leading scorer for the Bears, averaging 15.0 points per game on the season

- White is shooting 84.1% from the line and has dished out a team-high 67 assists

- Vincent Brady II is averaging 13.0 PPG while Michael Osei-Bonsu has chipped in 10.8 PPG and a team-high 7.2 rebounds
