Climate Change Expert to Speak on November 4
|
|
The Honors Program invites you to a campus presentation by climate change expert and bestselling author, Jeff Goodell, on Monday, November 4 at 6:00pm in Eykamp Hall.
Goodell will be discussing his latest book, The Heat Will Kill You First: Life and Death on a Scorched Planet. In this book, Goodell investigates an explosive new understanding of heat and the impact that soaring temperatures will have on our lives and on our world. Extreme heat kills more people per year than any other climate disaster and the negative effects—including increased suicide rates, death rates from heart and kidney disease, and spikes in violent crime—touch nearly every human life on the planet.
The Heat Will Kill You First debuted at #6 on The New York Times bestseller list and was named one of the best books of 2023 by NPR, The Los Angeles Times, and The Economist. |

Inaugural Morgan Whitaker Stankey Andiron Lecture to be on October 30
|
|
The William L. Ridgway College of Arts and Sciences is delighted to announce the launch of a new lecture series: The Morgan Whitaker Stankey Andiron Lectures. The Inaugural Lecture will be at 4:00pm on October 30 in SOBA 170, delivered by former UE Professor Dr Wes Milner. The series is dedicated to the memory of University of Evansville alumna Morgan Stankey, who passed away suddenly in March, 2023. Many generous gifts in Morgan’s memory have allowed us to reinvigorate a long-established tradition – the Andiron Lecture - that was a significant part of the University’s intellectual life for many years.
Morgan graduated with honors from Harrison High School and the University of Evansville. In typical over-achieving Morgan fashion, she graduated with three majors: History, Political Science and International Studies. She was an outstanding student and was beloved by both students and faculty in her three departments. Morgan was proud to be an Admissions Ambassador for UE, perfecting the art of talking and walking backward, and only once falling into rose bushes while extolling the virtues of the University. She spent two semesters in England at UE’s Harlaxton College, and later enrolled at the nearby University of Nottingham, where she earned Master’s degrees in contemporary European history and politics. Her father, Dr Michael Stankey, was Professor of Communications at UE, and her stepfather, Dr Stuart Dorsey, was Vice President of Academic Affairs.
Established in 1982, the William L. Ridgway College of Arts and Sciences offered the Andiron Lectures in Liberal Arts and Sciences. Lectures explored an array of topics, reflecting the multiplicity of scholarly endeavors of faculty members at the University of Evansville. These lectures were always free and hospitably open to the greater Evansville community. Presenters were primarily drawn from the faculty of the William L. Ridgway College of Arts and Sciences but included faculty members and administrators from across the University campus and occasional contributions from the larger regional community as well. The Andiron Lecture series was sponsored by the William L. Ridgway College of Arts and Sciences and was supported by a generous gift from Donald B. Korb.
Please join us in celebrating the commencement of a new tradition that honors both Morgan’s memory and the distinguished history of the Andiron Lectures. We hope to see you on October 30.

Brenner earns final MVC Freshman of the Week honor
|
|
EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Freshman defender Emmy Brenner (Arlington, Tenn. / St. Benedict at Auburndale HS) has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Freshman of the Week.
With the game-winning goal against the Southern Illinois Salukis, Brenner earned her second weekly honor in her first collegiate season. MVC Conference office staff decide on the MVC Freshman of the Week and other weekly accolades. Brenner’s first Freshman of the Week Honor came at the beginning of the month as she bookends the month of October.
In the Aces' final game of the 2024 season, Brenner continued her strong conference performance with her third goal of the year. In the 40th minute of Sunday’s game against Southern Illinois UE was awarded a corner kick following the Salukis kicking the ball out past the goal. On the corner from sophomore midfielder Ashlyn Koutsos (Cumming, Ga. / West Forsyth HS), Brenner headed the ball from the six into the middle of the net.
Along with the goal, Brenner had Evansville’s only shot on goal in the match that didn’t result in a score. In the 86th minute, Brenner took an attempt from just outside the right corner of the penalty area. The shot sailed to the middle of the net where the Salukis goalkeeper made a grabbing save.
With a goal on Sunday Brenner became the Aces' leading scorer along with sophomore forward Taylor Johnson (Evansville, Ind. / Reitz HS). Both players have three goals on the season for six points behind UE’s leading offensive player senior forward Hailey Autenrieb (Cincinnati / Seton HS). Brenner also had the third most shot attempts on the roster with 16 tries while nine landed on goal for a shot accuracy of 56.3%.
Evansville ended their season Sunday with a 2-0 win over SIU. The Aces' overall record ended at 2-7-7 with a conference record of 1-4-5. |
