* Inaugural Morgan Whitaker Stankey Andiron Lecture to be on October 30

The William L. Ridgway College of Arts and Sciences is delighted to announce the launch of a new lecture series: The Morgan Whitaker Stankey Andiron Lectures. The Inaugural Lecture will be at 4:00pm on October 30 in SOBA 170, delivered by former UE Professor Dr Wes Milner. The series is dedicated to the memory of University of Evansville alumna Morgan Stankey, who passed away suddenly in March, 2023. Many generous gifts in Morgan’s memory have allowed us to reinvigorate a long-established tradition – the Andiron Lecture - that was a significant part of the University’s intellectual life for many years.

Morgan graduated with honors from Harrison High School and the University of Evansville. In typical over-achieving Morgan fashion, she graduated with three majors: History, Political Science and International Studies. She was an outstanding student and was beloved by both students and faculty in her three departments. Morgan was proud to be an Admissions Ambassador for UE, perfecting the art of talking and walking backward, and only once falling into rose bushes while extolling the virtues of the University. She spent two semesters in England at UE’s Harlaxton College, and later enrolled at the nearby University of Nottingham, where she earned Master’s degrees in contemporary European history and politics. Her father, Dr Michael Stankey, was Professor of Communications at UE, and her stepfather, Dr Stuart Dorsey, was Vice President of Academic Affairs.

Established in 1982, the William L. Ridgway College of Arts and Sciences offered the Andiron Lectures in Liberal Arts and Sciences. Lectures explored an array of topics, reflecting the multiplicity of scholarly endeavors of faculty members at the University of Evansville. These lectures were always free and hospitably open to the greater Evansville community. Presenters were primarily drawn from the faculty of the William L. Ridgway College of Arts and Sciences but included faculty members and administrators from across the University campus and occasional contributions from the larger regional community as well. The Andiron Lecture series was sponsored by the William L. Ridgway College of Arts and Sciences and was supported by a generous gift from Donald B. Korb.

Please join us in celebrating the commencement of a new tradition that honors both Morgan’s memory and the distinguished history of the Andiron Lectures. We hope to see you on October 30.

* Aces women's soccer earns a point at Indiana State

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Evansville women’s soccer team ended the last road match of the season in a 2-2 draw with the Indiana State Sycamores.

The Purple Aces added another point as the 2024 season winds down at Memorial Stadium on Sunday afternoon. UE scored two goals in the first 30 minutes of the match as sophomore forward Taylor Johnson (Evansville, Ind. / Reitz HS) became Evansville’s goal-scoring leader with three. Graduate defender Rachel Rosborough (Mt. Brydges, Ontario) also added her first goal since 2021 in the tie.

The first half of the match was all Aces as they controlled the pace of play across the pitch. While the Sycamores had the first shots of the afternoon, UE scored on only the team's second shot. In the 15th minute after an Evansville blocked shot, sophomore midfielder Ashlyn Koutsos (Cumming, Ga. / West Forsyth HS) corralled the rebound at the three and knocked it over to Johnson. Johnson quickly tapped the ball with her right foot to give the Aces an early lead.

UE’s second goal of the match came only 15 minutes later. Sophomore midfielder Ella Hamner (Evansville, Ind. / Memorial HS) had a shot blocked from the top of the penalty arc. The ball went out to the right side of the field by Rosborough who maneuvered her way around an Indiana State defender and split two other Sycamores to score her second career goal. For the final 15 minutes of the first half, Evansville kept the ball away from Indiana State allowing just one shot in the final seven minutes.

The momentum of the match switched in the second half as the Sycamores came out of halftime on the offensive. Indiana State had the first three shots in five minutes, but the Aces had the best chance in the 54th minute. Senior forward Hailey Autenrieb (Cincinnati / Seton HS) crossed to Hamner at the top of the offensive third and forced a diving save left from the Sycamores goalkeeper. UE’s next shot didn’t come until 17 minutes later as junior forward Crysta Vasquez (Las Vegas / Coronado HS) put a chance on goal at the middle of the net.

Only two minutes later Indiana State cut into Evansville’s lead with a goal in the 73rd minute. Spurred by the goal, the Sycamores' offense pressured the Aces with five shots in under two minutes. UE countered with its final shot on goal in the 79th minute as Autenrieb had the ball at the eight, shooting toward the middle of the net.

Evansville kept the ball in the offensive zone for the next five minutes as Rosborough got a second opportunity in the 82nd minute. Her shot from out in the offensive third went high and to the right as the Aces shifted back to defense to try and win their first game since August. But Indiana State found the equalizer in the 87th minute as UE picked up its seventh tie of 2024.

Autenrieb, Hamner, and Rosborough all had two shots each to lead Evansville on offensive opportunities while five separate players registered a shot on goal. Fifth-year goalkeeper Myia Danke (Laingsburg, Mich. / Laingsburg HS) made six saves in the draw while the Aces also had a team save. UE will play its final game of the regular season on Sunday, October 27th against Southern Illinois at home. Kick-off from Arad McCutchan Stadium is set for 12 p.m. next week.

* UE men's soccer makes first trip to Northern Illinois

The Purple Aces tied the Louisville Cardinals for the first time in program history on Wednesday night. The 2-2 draw with the Cardinals was also UE's first point away in the series since a 2-0 win in 1991. Evansville was the only team to lead on Wednesday night through 90 minutes of action. The Aces held the game lead for 32 minutes while the match was tied for 56 minutes.

Northern Illinois is still looking for its first win of conference play with four matches left in 2024. The Huskies only have two wins on the season with victories over Mercyhust and Chicago State. Junior midfielder Jose Gomez is NIU's offensive leader with eight points from two goals and four assists in 12 games played. The Huskies leader in goals though is senior forward Kevin Kelly with three goals through 12 games. Overall Northern Illinois has nine different goal scorers in 12 games.

Two UE players scored their second goals of the season in Louisville. Redshirt freshman midfielder Jacopo Fedrizzi (Giulia, Italy) 2nd goal came in the 45th minute while fifth year forward Kai Phillip's (Diego Martin, Trinidad & Tobago) 2nd goal came in the 63rd minute. Evansville now has six players with multiple goals through 13 matches.

Saturday's match will be the Aces first at Northern Illinois in program history. UE and NIU have only played three games over the past 10 years with all three matches occurring at Arad McCutchan Stadium. This is only the second match where the two teams will meet as conference foes.

* Cardona reaches 2,000 kills in win over Salukis

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – University of Evansville senior Giulia Cardona became just the second player in Missouri Valley Conference history to reach 2,000 kills in her career as the Purple Aces defeated Southern Illinois in five sets on Friday evening inside Meeks Family Fieldhouse.

Cardona finished the night with 37 kills, just three shy of the all-time Missouri Valley Conference single match record that she co-shares.  The senior hit an impressive .330 while adding 11 digs.  Angelica Gonzalez finished the match with 11 kills while Chloe Cline added 10.  Kora Ruff posted team-highs with 55 assists and 18 digs.  Southern Illinois was led by a 20-kill match from Kelly Franklin.

Set 1 – UE 25, SIU 21

Kora Ruff opened the night with a service ace as the Purple Aces jumped out to a 6-2 lead.  Southern Illinois utilized an 8-2 run to take their first advantage at 10-8 before UE scored a pair to tie it up.  The Salukis retook the lead and extended it to 18-15.

That is when Evansville made its move.  With Chloe Cline doing the serving, UE scored six in a row to take the lead for good.  Cardona added three kills during the rally while Angelica Gonzalez added two late kills to clinch the first set.

Set 2 – UE 25, SIU 17

Another nice start saw Evansville score the opening three tallies as Ruff added her second ace of the night.  SIU got within a pair at 8-6 before Cline picked up a pair of kills as the UE advantage grew to 14-7.

Thing went Evansville’s way from there as the squad cruised to a 25-17 win to take a 2-0 match lead.

Set 3 – SIU 25, UE 19

After UE sored the opening point, the Salukis jumped in front by a 6-3 tally.  After the Aces made it a 2-point game at 8-6, SIU slowly built a commanding 19-11 advantage.  Evansville closed slightly, but the Salukis forced a fourth set.

Set 4 – SIU 25, UE 22

SIU had the early momentum, taking an 11-6 lead out of the gate.  Steele helped the Aces close the gap as a well-placed kill made it a 13-10 Saluki lead.  Following a 2-0 spurt by SIU, the Aces stormed back.  Evansville scored the next four as Cardona and Steele assisted on a block to get back within one.

Three in a row by SIU got them back on track and they would once again go up by five.  Maddie Hawkins registered an ace to cut the deficit to 23-21.  That is as close as the Aces would get before the Salukis extended the match to a decisive 5th set.

Set 5 – UE 15, SIU 8

Cardona’s huge night continued as four early kills resulted in a 6-3 Evansville lead.  Gonzalez also picked up her 10th kill during the early stretch.  After the Salukis closed within a point, it was the 37th kill of the match for Cardona that gave UE its largest lead at 12-8.

It was all Evansville from there as the Aces completed the set with a 15-8 win to earn their second MVC win of the season.  On Saturday, the Aces face Missouri State at 5 p.m.

* Aces win second match of the weekend

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – In a solid team performance from start to finish, the University of Evansville volleyball team earned a 3-1 victory over Missouri State inside Meeks Family Fieldhouse on Saturday evening.

Following a 37-kill effort on Friday, Giulia Cardona picked up 30 on Saturday.  Angelica Gonzalez added 10 while Chloe Cline finished with nine.  Kora Ruff had another solid night as she led the team with 16 digs, 46 assist, and 3 aces.  Cardona tied Ruff’s mark with three aces of her own.

Set 1 – UE 25, MSU 13

Chloe Cline had a nice start to the match, picking up two early kills as the Aces took a 5-3 lead.  Missouri State tied it up and the teams battled to an 11-11 tie.  That is when Evansville made its move, scoring the next five points to take its largest lead at 16-11.

After the Bears got within four at 17-13, the Aces put their best foot forward, scoring the final eight points of the set as they cruised to a 25-13 win.  Kora Ruff served up an ace to clinch the set.

Set 2 – MSU 26, UE 24

Things were close in the early moments, leading to a 6-6 score.  After MSU took an 8-7 lead, the Bears outscored the Aces by a 7-2 margin to open a 15-9 lead.  Evansville never gave up and battled back.

Still trailing by six at 20-14, UE scored five in a row to get within one.  Cardona added three kills to her tally.  SMS retook a 23-21 edge but the Aces continued to battle.  A kill and ace by Cardona put UE on top 24-23.  Unfortunately, the Bears scored the final three points to take the set.

Set 3 – UE 27, MSU 25

Cline picked up a kill to give the Aces a 3-1 lead before an ace by the sophomore made it a 10-7 game.  Evansville continued to add to the lead when another Cline kill gave her team a 17-10 advantage.

A service error by the Bears set UE up with a 21-15 lead, but the visiting team fought back.  Four in a row got them back within a pair and after UE took a 24-20 lead, MS came back with five in a row to take the lead.  Despite the rally by the opposition, the Aces took care of business, finishing with the final three in a row to take a 2-1 match lead.

Set 4 – UE 25, MSU 22

Blakeley Freeman recorded an ace to help her team jump out to a 6-2 lead before picking up her second of the set to push the advantage to 13-7.  Cardona continued another huge performance with kill #28 of the contest cementing a 16-9 edge.  With the Aces up 21-14, MSU worked its way back with four in a row.

Evansville regrouped with two in a row to hold a 24-20 edge.  Following two more tallies by the Bears, Angelica Gonzalez recorded the clinching kill to give UE its second match win of the weekend.  The Aces look for another win on Monday when they travel to Indiana State.
