* Men's golf travels to Cullan Brown Collegiate

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Up next for the University of Evansville men’s golf team is a trip to Lexington, Ky. for the Cullan Brown Collegiate.

Hosted at Lexington Country Club, the tournament is set for Monday and Tuesday.  The field includes Bellarmine, Belmont, Chattanooga, Eastern Kentucky, Evansville, Kennesaw State, Kentucky, Mercer, Morehead State, North Alabama, Purdue Fort Wayne, South Alabama, Toledo, and Western Kentucky.  Par is 71 and the yardage is 7,280.

Earlier this week, the Purple Aces took part in the Bubba Barnett Intercollegiate in Jonesboro, Ark.  Andres Rodriguez was the top finisher for UE, tying for 40th.  Over three rounds of play, he recorded a 219 with his low round (1-under 71) coming in the second 18 holes.

Omar Khalid finished two strokes behind Rodriguez with a 221.  He matched Rodriguez’ tally in the second round, recording a 71.  Daniil Romashkin completed the top three for Evansville.  His 229 tied him for 69th place.  He opened the event with a 71.

As a team, UE came home in 15th place.

* Cardona picks up 31 kills in loss to Racers

MURRAY, Ky. – Another unbelievable effort saw Giulia Cardona record 31 kills as Murray State erased an 0-2 deficit to defeat the University of Evansville volleyball team in five sets on Saturday.

Cardona hit an efficient .274 in the contest while adding six digs.  Ainoah Cruz led the way with 13 digs while Kora Ruff registered 29 assists.  Four Racers had double figure kills with Ella Vogel leading the way with 18.

Game 1 – UE 25, MSU 23

Madisyn Steele’s solo block opened a 3-1 spurt by the Aces to begin the match.  Murray State took their first lead at 7-4 and continued to hold the advantage throughout the majority of the frame with the largest edge being five points at 16-11.

UE never backed down and utilized a 3-0 rally to tie it up at 20-20 with Steele and Angelica Gonzalez registering a block.  Following a point by the Racers, Steele added a kill to her tally as the Aces went up by a score of 24-22.  Giulia Cardona would pick up the clinching kill for the Aces in a 25-23 decision.

Game 2 – UE 25, MSU 19
Angelica Gonzalez recorded a kill that put the Aces up by a 3-1 tally.  Posting four of the next five points, the Racers took their first advantage at 5-4.  Once again, MSU took control as the set approached the middle portion.  Their lead grew to as many as four points at 12-8.

Just as they did in the opening set, the Aces made their way back.  Jenna Heidbreder’s ace put UE back in front at 16-15 before an ace by Maddie Hawkins set her team up with a 20-17 lead.  Evansville held strong from that point, clinching the set on a kill by Steele.

Game 3 – MSU 25, UE 22

Murray State had the upper hand throughout most of the third game.  With the game tied at 3-3, the Racers scored three in a row.  Following a point by Evansville, MSU came right back to take an 11-5 lead.  The 6-point deficit did not deter UE as a 6-1 stretch got them right back within a point.  Heidbreder completed the stretch with a kill.

Gonzalez added another kill to her total to tie the game at 15-15.  Two in a row by the Racers got them back on track and they would outduel UE to take the game, however, the Aces still held a 2-1 match lead.

Game 4 – MSU 25, UE 12

After MSU took a 3-1 edge, Gonzalez and Steele combined on a block to cut the gap to a point.  The Racers fended off the challenge and came back to go up 9-4 and would add to the lead from there, winning by a 25-12 margin to force a fifth set.

Game 5 – MSU 15, UE 6

It was all Racers in the fifth as they reeled off the first eight points before winning by a final of 15-6 to seal the match.

* Late goal from Velazquez helps Aces women's soccer to a draw against Drake

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Evansville women’s soccer team bounced back from a tough loss on Thursday with a 1-1 tie of the Drake Bulldogs.

The Purple Aces picked up another point on Saturday afternoon as junior forward Amy Velazquez (Avon, Ind. / Avon HS) scored the tying goal in the 83rd minute. The goal was Velazquez second of the year as she now becomes the second UE player with multiple goals on the season. Senior forward Hailey Autenrieb (Cincinnati / Seton HS) also added her third assist of 2024 to lead Evansville in points with five.

“We’ve been flat the last two games, so a result today was important,” said Head Coach Chris Pfau. “We’re still a young team in terms of how to win these games and playing with emotions. I thought Murray State and Missouri State were two of our better games and we got points out of that.

“Unfortunately, we kind of hit the wall against UNI. This wasn’t a great game for us but I told the team if we turn the corner we have to get points when we’re not at our best and it's ugly. And I thought we did that today.

“Today we weren’t good, but we gutted it out. Myia [Danek] played absolutely brilliantly in goal and kept us in the game. And we got that goal in the end to tie and get a point to keep us in the running for the tournament.”

It was a slow start to Sunday’s match for the Aces as they didn’t connect on their first shot until the 13th minute. But Velazquez showed early that she’d be an offensive force for UE with the first shot for the team. Evansville put together a brief run of shots with three shots in five minutes. Drake responded with back-to-back shots right after. But the Aces retook control, forcing a save from the Bulldogs goalkeeper in the 24th minute.

Both teams fought for possession in the middle of the field until Drake had a three-shot run in the final 10 minutes of the match. UE goalkeeper Myia Danek (Laingsburg, Mich. / Laingsburg HS) made two saves to make it a 0-0 tie heading into the second half. But Evansville would be caught off guard at the start of the second as a Bulldog forward got one pass Danek into the right side of the net in the 46th minute.

While the Bulldogs were able to get off another shot a minute later, the Aces quickly returned to their offensive end. UE pushed the pace with four straight shots over 18 minutes midway through the half. Drake snuck in another shot before Evansville returned to the attack with shots from freshman forward Taylor Wehrer (Las Vegas / Desert Oasis HS) and junior forward Chrysta Vasquez (Las Vegas / Coronado HS).

It would be Velazquez though who found the back of the net for the Aces. In the 83rd minute Velazquez took the ball from a Bulldog defender up into the 12. She then passed over to Autenrieb on the right side of the penalty box, who quickly returned it to Velazquez at the six. Velazquez struck the ball with her right foot and blew it past Drake’s goalkeeper into the center of the net to tie the match up with only seven minutes left.

UE’s defense held strong in the match's waning minutes, not allowing the Bulldogs another shot. Evansville picked up a point in the MVC standings for three points in conference action. Velazquez led the Aces on offense with three shots in 60 minutes of action. Sophomores Ella Hamner (Evansville, Ind. / Memorial HS) and Taylor Johnson (Evansville, Ind. / Reitz HS) were the only other UE players with multiple shots taking two each.

Evansville will return to action on Thursday, October 10th at UIC. Kick-off from Chicago is set for 6 p.m.

Game 1 – Belmont 25, UE 18

Kora Ruff opened the match with an ace before setting up Giulia Cardona for the kill.  Belmont responded with four in a row to take their first lead.

With the Bruins up 9-8, they went on a run to push the lead to 14-10.  UE rallied once again, cutting the deficit in half as a kill by Angelica Gonzalez helped her team make it a 19-17 game.  Belmont had the response, completing the set on a 6-1 run to take a 1-0 lead.

Game 2 – Belmont 25, UE 21

Both teams had the lead in the early moments of the second frame, but with the score tied at 7-7, Belmont scored three in a row to take the lead for good.  The 3-0 spurt was the start of a 10-3 run that put them in front by a 17-10 score.

Despite the deficit, the Aces kept fighting.  Trailing 22-14, UE outscored the Bruins by a 6-1 margin to cut the deficit to 23-20.  Madisyn Steele had a kill during the stretch before the Bruins regrouped to take a 2-0 match lead.

Game 3 – Belmont 25, UE 14

Another close game ensued as the squads dueled to a 6-6 score.  Four in a row by the Bruins set them up with another lead they would not relinquish.  They clinched the match with a 25-14 decision.
