* Fiddick Lecture to Discuss WW2 in the Pacific

The University of Evansville’s Department of History, Politics, and Social Change is proud to welcome Dr John C McManus for the 22nd annual Thomas C. Fiddick Memorial Lecture. The event is free and open to the public, and all faculty, staff, and students are warmly invited.

John C. McManus is Curators’ Distinguished Professor of U.S. military history at the Missouri University of Science and Technology (Missouri S&T). As one of the nation’s leading military historians, and the prize-winning author of fifteen well received books on the topic, he is in frequent demand as a speaker and expert commentator. His most recent project has been a major three volume history of the U.S. Army in the Pacific/Asia theater during World War II which culminated with the 2023 publication of To the End of the Earth: The US Army and the Downfall of Japan, 1945.

“Professor McManus is one of the world’s leading historians of World War II and it is an enormous privilege to bring him to the University of Evansville to deliver the 2024 Fiddick Lecture and interact with students in class,” said Dr James MacLeod, UE professor of history and director of the Fiddick Memorial Lecture Series. Dr MacLeod also said, “Given the fact that the lecture will mark 80 years since some of the key battles of the Pacific War, and Tom Fiddick’s lifelong interest in the War, this lecture topic is particularly appropriate.”

* Aces men's soccer blanked at Xavier

CINCINATTI – The University of Evansville men’s soccer team was kept out of the net for the first time in 2024 in a 2-0 loss to the Xavier Musketeers.

The Purple Aces defense was tested in their third of four straight road games in Cincinnati. Graduate forward Sami Owusu (Denver / Dayton) was the only UE player with multiple shots while senior midfielder Jose Vivas (Teruel, Spain) had the only chance on net. Freshman goalkeeper Michal Mroz (Elk Grove, Ill. / Elk Grove HS) made three saves in the loss.

Evansville’s offense struggled in the first half with two offside’s calls in the first 13 minutes of action. The Aces didn’t find the offensive zone until two thirds into the first half as Owusu launched a ball just high of the goal in the 33rd minute. Xavier dominated play in the first 45 minutes with six shots. The final shot ended up in the back of the net for the Musketeers in the 42nd minute, putting UE down by one going into the second half.

The start of the second half played out in similar fashion for Evansville as Xavier scored a long goal in the 49th minute to put the Aces down by two. The match’s pace slowed down after the goal as both teams fought for the ball in the midfield. UE’s offense came alive in the 71st minute with four straight shots at the net.

Vivas chance came in the 74th minute after he stripped the ball from a Musketeer defender. He took the ball all the way into the 12 and fired. But the shot was saved by Xavier’s goalkeeper coming out of the net to make the save with a slide tackle. Sophomore winger Auden Engen Vik (Tondheim, Norway) took a shot on the rebound, but it was blocked by a Musketeer. Vik’s blocked shot in the 75th minute ended up being Evansville’s final opportunity of the night.

The Aces return to Missouri Valley Conference play on Saturday. UE will have its last of four away games in Peoria to take on Bradley. Kick-off for Evansville’s return to conference play on September 28th is set for 7 p.m.

* Second round complete at Graeme McDowell Invitational

ONEONTA, Ala. – After shooting identical scores in the first round of the Graeme McDowell Invitational, the duo of Andres Rodriguez and Daniil Romashkin did so once again in Monday’s second round to pace the University of Evansville men’s golf team.

Rodriguez and Romashkin both recorded scores of 75 to open the event on Sunday and came back in the second 18 holes to post rounds of 71, one under par.  Both are tied for the 40th position at Limestone Springs.

Omar Khalid made a nice improvement in the second 18 holes.  The freshman began the weekend with a 78 before lowering his score by five shots to a 2-over 74.  He is tied for 66th on the individual leaderboard.

Eli Rohleder and Julian Kiessling completed the scoring for the Purple Aces.  Rohleder remains fourth on the team with a 158.  Both of his rounds finished at 7-over.  Kiessling made the largest jump for UE.  After carding a score of 85 on Sunday, the freshman completed Monday’s round with a 5-over 77.

Evansville remains in 12th place in the team standings while the top of the standings see the top three teams separated by just one stroke.  North Alabama heads into Tuesday’s final round at 21-under with Lipscomb and UL Monroe tied for second, just one off the pace.

* UE men's soccer road trip heads to Xavier

The Purple Aces fell behind early at No. 9 Western Michigan on Sunday afternoon and weren't able to make up the distance over 90 minutes in the 2-1 loss. It was UE's first loss to Western Michigan in the eight-game series dating back to 1979. Sunday's match was Evansville's first against its first ranked opponent of the season. Currently the Aces have one more ranked opponent on the schedule in the no. 23 Bowling Green Falcons at the end of October. In 2023 UE played three ranked teams and last beat a ranked team in 2018.

After a season off from playing the Musketeers, UE returns to play at Corcoran Field for the first time since 2016. Evansville will try for the team's first win in Cincinnati in almost 25 years on Tuesday after the two teams did not play each other for two separate six-year stretches. The two teams last met during the 2022 season in Evansville where Xavier left the River City with a 3-1 victory.

The Musketeers come into Tuesday's game with a 3-2-3 overall record and a 1-0-0 Big East conference record. Xavier began conference play over the weekend with a 1-0 win over St. Johns for their second straight shutout match. The Musketeers are led on offense by junior defender Matthew Senanou who has three goals on the season. Xavier has had eight different players score a goal through eight matches.

Two separate UE players scored their first goals of the season in the Aces last week of matches. Redshirt freshman Jacopo Fedrizzi (Giulia, Italy) first goal came against Indiana in the 73rd minute and was the match-tying goal. While freshman defender Martin Wurschmidt (Fram, Norway) scored his first career goal at Western Michigan in the 63rd minute of the match.

Sophomore midfielder Will Bencic will play in his hometown for the first time since joining the Aces in 2023. Bencic has started the past two games for UE on the road and played at Lakota East HS in Cincinnati for four years prior to moving to Evansville.

* Aces Esports SUCCESSFUL Preseason

The preseason for National Esports Collegiate Conference (NECC) wrapped up with three teams making strong impressions, each driven by standout players. Our Counter-Strike 2 team finished with a solid 2-1 record, against University of Michigan, North Dakota State, and Grand Valley State. Adam Goffinet and Jude Nguyen consistently delivered both offensively and defensively. Drew Fieger and Jeremy Pennington had clutch performances in critical moments against our hardest competitors. Rookie In-Game-Leader Azim Tashpulatov also caught attention, stepping up with their fast thinking and ability to keep mentals in check, proving just how valuable they are.

On the Rocket League team, Aedon Smith led the charge with an impressive number of shots on goal, while Eli Minar consistently regained possession for us. Wade Dixon’s defensive prowess was a sight to behold, with an impressive number of saves. Our victories against North Illinois, University of Illinois, and University of Houston are a testament to our team's skill and coordination.

Meanwhile, Overwatch added two new valuable additions to the team, with rookie tank Cruz Dillehay showing leading the team into battle and rookie DPS Reese Doran showing off his aim and knowledge of the game. Veteran support duo, Ethan Jaworski and Gwyneth Hanson controlled the tempo of the game, while veteran DPS Brennan Hacker put consistent numbers on the board to help the team achieve an impressive 2-1 record.
