"Three Shades of Cadence" - UE Music Conservatory Faculty Recital
|
|
Featuring Charles du Preez (clarinet), with guests Mark Hatlestad (viola), Graham Cullen (cello), and Tom Drury (piano).
Join us Tuesday, September 24 at 7:30 in Wheeler Concert Hall for a night of musical marvels.
These performances will take the listener on a journey of many emotions over the course of three very unique pieces. The recital will begin with Rebecca Clarke’s beautiful duo for clarinet and viola, Prelude, Allegro, and Pastorale. Composed in 1941, but only discovered in 1989, this gem takes the listener on a voyage through melancholy and nostalgia.
inti figgiz-vizueta’s piece no words, for clarinet and electronics “confronts the increased police surveillance in gentrified neighborhoods, drawing and reflecting on the composer’s experiences growing up in a majority Black and Salvadoran community and hood in Washington, D.C.” This piece involves electroacoustic clarinet, and creates a space of exploration, inquiry, and reflection. Expect unusual sounds and a loud volume in this conceptual piece, composed in 2019.
The final selection on the program, Beethoven’s Trio in B flat major, Op. 11, showcases the virtuosity of the clarinet, cello, and piano; the excitement of the composer exudes throughout. Written early in Beethoven’s career, the Trio bases the theme of the final movement on a popular opera song from the composer’s day. Considering the amount of sampling that takes place in current popular music, examples like the Trio serve to form and solidify the link between Beethoven and the popular music of the present era.
Hope to see you there! |

Archaeology Major Publishes First Research Article
|
|
Sophia Caci is a UE Senior majoring in Archaeology and Anthropology. She had her first article published, “Disability Inclusion in Archaeology”, in June 2024 on the Enabled Archaeology Foundation website. During her semester at Harlaxton, Sophia conducted a research project comparing practices of Community Archaeology between the UK and the US. While conducting her research, she discovered the Enabled Archaeology Foundation (EAF) and had the good fortune to interview Sarahjayne Clements, communications officer, in March 2024 and discovered the important work EAF does in making the field of archaeology accessible to those with disabilities. She was later invited to use her research to write an article for the site and was excited and proud of the opportunity to share her insight. Aces women's soccer earns a point with a draw against Murray State
|
|
EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Evansville women’s soccer team picked up their first result in Missouri Valley Conference play against the Murray State Racers.
Dominating possession time on Sunday the Purple Aces were able to earn their first point of the MVC season in a 0-0 draw with Murray State. UE took 13 shots against the Racers defense with senior forward Hailey Autenrieb (Cincinnati / Seton HS) leading the way with four. Fifth year goalkeeper Myia Danke (Laingsburg, Mich. / Laingsburg HS) made six saves through 90 minutes for 46 on the season.
“It felt good to get a point,” said Head Coach Chris Pfau. “I thought at Belmont we did everything we needed to do to get a point down there. When your keeper doesn’t have a save the whole game and you still lose one nothing, it’s frustrating at times.
“What’s great about this team is that they see how close they are to get on top of teams and create opportunities. We’re just an early goal away from really opening up the game. I thought the first half was some of the best soccer we’ve played all season. It was a great effort, a great team effort and a really good result against a really good team.”
It was a hot start for Evansville as the Aces took three shots in the first five minutes. Two of those chances forced saves from Murray State goalkeeper Griselda Revolorio as midfielder Ella Hamner (Evansville, Ind. / Memorial HS) beat two defenders in the first minute for a shot to the top right of the goal. Forward Amy Velazquez (Avon, Ind. / Avon HS) put another shot on net in the fifth minute, forcing a diving save from Revolorio.
UE kept the pressure on with the next two shots. The Racers didn’t record a chance until the 12th minute while Evansville added another close chance in the 17th minute from Autenrieb. The Aces played more in the defensive end for the next 10 minutes. But UE returned quickly to offense in the 26th minute as Autenrieb fired off a shot that barely glanced off the crossbar. Evansville added two more shots before the end of the half, taking an eight to six shot advantage into the second 45 minutes.
It was Murray State who started the second half hot with two shots in the first three minutes. But the Aces matched the quick start with two shots of their own only three minutes later. As the half progressed it became a more even pace. The Races got hot again in the final 20 minutes, but UE’s defense stayed strong to keep it a nil-nil result.
Evansville continues conference play on the road later this week. The Aces travel to Springfield for their final regular season MVC match with the Missouri State Bears. Kick-off from Betty and Bobby Allison South Stadium is set for 6 p.m. on Thursday, September 26th. |

Aces men's soccer comes up short at No. 9 Western Michigan
|
|
KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The University of Evansville men’s soccer team couldn’t overcome an early deficit in a 2-1road loss to the #9 Western Michigan Broncos.
Freshman defender Martin Wurschmidt (Fram, Norway) scored his first collegiate goal for the Purple Aces in the 63rd minute of Sunday’s match. But the goal wouldn’t be enough for UE to earn a result against the ninth ranked team in the nation in a hard fought game. With only six shots in 90 minutes Evansville only had the lone opportunity in the back of the net.
It was a battle in the midfield to begin Sunday’s match as neither team had an attacking opportunity in the first eight minutes. The Aces were the first team to put a shot on goal, as junior defender Nacho Diaz-Caneja (Coruna, Spain) launched from the top of the penalty circle to Bronco’s goalie Colin West. Western Michigan responded to UE’s offense with an attack of its own in the second third of the first half.
After two straight shots from the Broncos, Evansville took a foul in the goal box giving WMU a penalty kick. Western Michigan didn’t score on the PK itself but found the bottom right side of the net on the rebound in the 22nd minute to put the Aces down by one. Following the goal, the Broncos controlled the pace of play as UE didn’t record a shot for the rest of the half.
It took Evansville a few minutes to get going in the second half on offense as they defended two corner kicks in the first minute of play. Western Michigan kept the pressure on in the attacking third and scored their second goal of the match in the 59th minute. The Aces responded shortly after in the 63rd minute as Wurschmidt headed the ball into the right side of the net off a free kick from midfielder Jacopo Fedrizzi (Guilia, Spain) for his second assist of the year.
UE continued to try and find the tying goal to earn a result against the Broncos. Diaz-Caneja had a near miss in the 74th minute as his shot sailed just wide of the net. Evansville also had a close opportunity in the 78th minute as senior midfielder Jose Vivas (Teruel, Spain) forced a diving save from Welsh on the second attempt from a free kick. The Aces final attempt to tie the game up came with only 40 seconds left on the clock as UE earned a free kick just outside the penalty area. But WMU got a head on the ball off the kick, sending it away from any Evansville touch in the attacking third.
Diaz-Caneja had the most shots for the Aces with three through 90 minutes. Three other players had a shot each including Wurschmidt’s goal. UE continues their four game road swing with a stop in Cincinnati at Xavier. Kick-off from Corcoran Field on Tuesday, September 24th is set for 6 p.m. |

Cardona breaks program service ace mark on Sunday
|
|
EVANSVILLE, Ind. – With five service aces on Sunday against IU Indianapolis, Giulia Cardona set the University of Evansville program mark inside Screaming Eagles Arena. Cardona now has a career total of 207 and broke Kim Seib’s mark of 205, which was set in 1984.
Her effort highlighted a 3-2 defeat to the Jaguars. Cardona registered 30 kills, 11 digs, and 5 aces on the afternoon. Ainoah Cruz led the Purple Aces with 16 digs while Blakeley Freeman had 10. Angelica Gonzalez picked up 8 kills while Lexi Owen notched 38 assists. Morgan Ostrowski led the Jaguars with 17 kills.
Set 1 – IU Indy 25, UE 19
Opening the game scoring eight of the first 10 points, IU Indianapolis hung on for a 25-19 win to take the early lead. Facing the early deficit, the Purple Aces did their best to come back. After Angelica Gonzalez picked up an ace, Madisyn Steele added a kill to get within one at 14-13. Unfortunately, the Jaguars countered with a 5-0 spurt that saw them retake control.
Set 2 – UE 25, IU Indy 18
With the score tied at 4-4, Evansville scored nine of the next ten points to take a 13-5 lead. Jenna Heidbreder picked up a pair of service aces while Chloe Cline notched a kill in the run. The Jaguars never gave up and cut the deficit in half to make it a 15-11 game forcing an Evansville time out.
From there, the Aces held strong, never letting IU Indianapolis get any closer while tying the match with a 25-18 win.
Set 3 – UE 26, IU Indy 24
Two kills by Giulia Cardona highlighted a 4-0 run with the game tied at 3-3. Her third kill of the frame pushed the lead to 11-4. IU Indianapolis utilized an 8-3 stretch to make it a 14-12 game. UE regained a 4-point edge at 23-19 before the Jaguars rallied once again. Three in a row cut the Aces lead to just one before a service error gave UE set point. Two more by IU Indy tied it up at 24-24, but Cardona came through in the clutch, picking up a kill to seal a 26-24 victory.
Set 4 – IU Indy 25, UE 19
Another big start by the Jaguars saw them jump out to a 6-1 advantage. Despite the early hole, UE rallied back. A Gonzalez kill was part of a run that tied it up at 9-9 and a Cardona ace put Evansville in front at 15-14. IU Indianapolis regained control, completing the set on an 11-4 stretch to force a decisive fifth set.
Set 5 – IU Indy 15, UE 6
The Jaguars took the early momentum posting five of the first six points and would cruise to a 15-6 win to clinch the match.
MVC play opens next weekend when the Aces welcome Valparaiso and UIC to Meeks Family Fieldhouse. |

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The Missouri Valley Conference released the league slate for the 2024-25 men’s basketball season on Friday. Start times will be released in the coming weeks.
Since the 2022-23 season, the MVC has utilized a 20-game schedule as the conference expanded to 12 teams. As has been the norm since that time, schools will open the league portion of the schedule in December with regular-season action wrapping up on the first weekend of March.
On Tuesday, December 3, the University of Evansville travels to Murray State for its league opener. Last season, the Racers were 9-11 in the Valley, finishing in a tie for 7th. Non-conference games resume until the final weekend of December when MVC play resumes. The Purple Aces welcome Missouri State to the Ford Center on Dec. 29 in what will be the final home meeting against the Bears as members of the league. Following the upcoming school year, MSU will join Conference USA.
Evansville travels to Southern Illinois to open the New Year. The January 1 game will see the Aces take on a Saluki team that is coming off a 19-13 campaign that saw them win 11 league games. UE’s following two games will be at home as the Aces play host to Indiana State on the 4th and Illinois State on the 8th. Last year, the Sycamores won 32 games on their way to the MVC regular-season championship. Former UE assistant coach Matthew Graves is in his first season at the helm of the program. The Redbirds picked up 15 wins last year while their 9-11 mark in the Valley tied them for 7th. Evansville was victorious in two out of three games against ISU last season including a 59-53 win at Arch Madness.
Back-to-back games in Iowa are up next with UE facing Drake on the 11th and UNI on the 14th. The Bulldogs were 28-7 and 16-4 in the league in 2023-24 and won the conference championship while receiving the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The Panthers tied for 4th in the league after going 19-14 overall and 12-8 against league foes.
UE returns to the Ford Center for its next two games starting on Jan. 18 when Belmont comes to town. The Bruins tied for 4th in the MVC last year after going 20-13 while picking up 12 Valley wins. Four days later, the Aces host UIC. After a road game at Valparaiso on the 25th, Evansville wraps up the month with a home game against Murray State.
February begins with a road trip to Belmont on the 2nd with a pair of home games to follow. UE welcomes SIU on the 5th and Bradley on the 8th. On Feb. 12, the Aces trek to Missouri State before returning home for a Feb. 16 game against Valpo. Three of the final four games will take place on the road starting on the 19th when the Aces travel to Terre Haute to face the Sycamores. The Aces remain on the road to face UIC on the 22nd.
In its final home game, Evansville hosts Drake on Feb. 26 with the regular-season finale at Illinois State set for Sunday, March 2. Arch Madness will take place at the Enterprise Center in St. Louis from March 6-9. |
