* Nationally-Ranked Sycamores Edge Baseball Aces, 6-4

The nationally-ranked Indiana State Sycamores used solo home runs in the fourth and fifth innings on Saturday to rally from an early 4-3 deficit to hold off the visiting University of Evansville baseball team, 6-4, at Bob Warn Field in Terre Haute, Indiana.

Senior first baseman Kip Fougerousse started a perfect 5-for-5 day in the first inning with a two-run double to give UE an early 2-0 lead.  But, the Sycamores rallied for three runs in the bottom of the first inning on four singles to quickly grab a 3-2 advantage.

From there, both starters – Evansville’s Donovan Schultz (3-2) and Indiana State’s Brennyn Cutts – traded scoreless innings until the fourth inning, when UE would grab a 4-3 lead with a pair of runs.  Fougerousse launched his 12th home run of the year with a solo home run to lead off the frame, before junior designated hitter Evan Waggoner would add an RBI single with two outs to give UE a 4-3 lead.

The lead would be short-lived though, as Indiana State’s Adam Pottinger would hit a lead-off home run in the bottom of the fourth inning to tie the game at 4-4.  Then, in the fifth inning, ISU first baseman Luis Hernandez launched a lead-off home run to give the Sycamores a 5-4 lead.  From there, ISU reliever Zach Davidson (3-1) would keep Evansville off-balance, striking out 10 men in 4.1 scoreless innings of three-hit relief.

Indiana State would tack on an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth inning to extend the lead to 6-4.  UE would threaten in the top of the ninth inning, as graduate outfielder Mark Shallenberger and Fougerousse would produce singles to put two men on with two out.  ISU closer Simon Gregersen would get a line out to second base, though, to end the threat and earn his sixth save of the year.

Fougerousse went 5-for-5 with two doubles and a home run, as he finished just a triple shy of hitting for the cycle.  Shallenberger and senior shortstop Simon Scherry both added two hits for Evansville.

With the victory, Indiana State improved to 36-10 overall and 19-4 in the Missouri Valley Conference.  Evansville, meanwhile, dropped to 28-22 overall and 14-9 in the MVC with the loss.  The series will conclude on Sunday afternoon at 12 p.m. central time.  Sunday’s game can be heard live in the Tri-State area on 107.1 FM-WJPS and seen live on-line on ESPN+.

The Purple Aces had two runners qualify for the men’s and women’s 800-meter final on Saturday afternoon. Rodriguez ran a PR of 1:51.81 to take the last spot in the men’s 800-meter final on Sunday while Prauchner did the same in the women’s 800-meter with a time of 2:11.76.

Losma took 13th place with a time of 1:55.32 in the heat, while freshman Jakub Nowiki (Poznan, Poland) rounded out the men’s 800-meter race for the Aces with a time of 1:57.96.

The visiting University of Evansville baseball team exploded for six runs on three home runs in the second inning on Sunday, and then the Purple Aces held off the nationally-ranked Indiana State Sycamores, 7-6, at Bob Warn Field in Terre Haute, Indiana.

“What a gritty effort in all three facets to salvage a game on the weekend today,” said UE head coach Wes Carroll.  “I thought all three pitchers really battled today and gave us everything they had.  I thought Nick Smith, Shane Harris and Jakob Meyer were outstanding.

“Offensively, I thought that we had a pretty good plan today at the plate.  We are a pretty talented club, and I know that we dropped the last two games, but I thought that our guys really showed what they are made of today in a battle against a very good Indiana State team.”

After Indiana State rallied for two two-out runs in the bottom of the first inning to grab an early 2-0 lead, Evansville exploded for six runs off of Indiana State starter Luke Hayden (6-2) to take a lead it would never lose.  Junior outfielder Ty Rumsey opened UE’s six-run frame with a no-doubt three-run home run to deep right field to give UE a 3-2 lead.

Fellow junior outfielder Harrison Taubert followed two batters later with a solo home run to left field to push the UE lead to 4-2.  Then, senior designated hitter Kip Fougerousse crushed a two-run home run to left-center field to give Evansville a 6-2 cushion.

UE starter Nick Smith and senior reliever Shane Harris (6-6) kept Indiana State off the scoreboard until the sixth inning, when Indiana State got a solo home run from shortstop Randal Diaz to trim UE’s lead to 6-3.  ISU would then add a two-run home run from third baseman Mike Sears in the seventh inning to get back within a run at 6-5.  UE senior reliever Jakob Meyer would work a scoreless eighth inning, though, and Evansville would tack on an insurance run with a two-out rally in the ninth inning to extend the lead to 7-5.

In the ninth inning, graduate outfielder Mark Shallenberger laid down a two-out bunt against an infield shift by Indiana State to begin the rally, and extend his hitting streak to 12 games.  Fougerousse then worked an eight-pitch walk to put two runners on base, before graduate third baseman Brent Widder laced a double over the third base bag and into the left-field corner to score Shallenberger and give UE a 7-5 lead.

The insurance run would be needed, as Indiana State rallied for a run in the bottom of the ninth inning against Meyer.  But, Meyer struck out Indiana State second baseman Josue Urdaneta with the tying run at second base to record a nine-out save for his fourth save of the season.

Fougerousse, Rumsey and Taubert all had two-hit days to pace the Evansville offense on Sunday.  Harris earned the victory by holding Indiana State to a single run on four hits and a walk in 3.2 innings of work with three strikeouts.

With the victory, Evansville improved to 29-22 overall and 15-9 in the Missouri Valley Conference, as the Purple Aces moved into a tie with UIC for second-place in the MVC standings.  Indiana State, meanwhile, dropped to 36-11 overall and 19-5 in the Missouri Valley Conference with the loss.  Evansville will host UIC in a three-game series next weekend beginning on Thursday, with the winner of the series capturing the No. 2 seed in the upcoming MVC Tournament to be held in Evansville from May 21-25.  But, first, Evansville will wrap up non-conference play on Tuesday night, as the Purple Aces will travel south to Clarksville, Tennessee to battle the Austin Peay State Governors.  First-pitch on Tuesday night is set for 6 p.m. in a game that can be seen live on ESPN+.

* Nationally-Ranked Sycamores Rally For 5-4 Win Over Baseball Aces

The nationally-ranked Indiana State Sycamores rallied for three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning on Friday afternoon to rally past the visiting University of Evansville baseball team, 5-4, at Bob Warn Field in Terre Haute, Indiana.

“I thought that we had a great effort from our club today in a nationally-televised game,” said UE head coach Wes Carroll.  “We had a lead with six outs to go, but just couldn’t close the door.

“I thought that we got an outstanding performance from Kenton Deverman today.  He really battled against a very good Indiana State lineup.  Now, we need to bounce back tomorrow to get back in the series.”

Indiana State struck first with a solo home run to left field by catcher Grant McGill in the third inning, but, after that, UE starter Kenton Deverman buckled down and got out of the frame and worked a perfect fourth inning.

His teammates would give him the lead in the fifth inning thanks to wildness by the Indiana State pitching staff.  Five walks by Indiana State pitching, including bases-loaded walks to UE junior outfielder Harrison Taubert and graduate outfielder Mark Shallenberger gave UE a 2-1 advantage.  A sacrifice fly by senior designated hitter Kip Fougerousse pushed the UE lead to 3-1 halfway through the contest.

Indiana State would answer back with single run in the bottom of the fifth inning, but UE would take a 3-2 lead to the eighth inning, as Deverman retired seven of the final eight men he faced on the mound.  Overall, Deverman limited Indiana State to two runs on seven hits and a walk in 7.0 innings of work, while striking out six.

UE would tack on a run in the top of the eighth inning on a double by graduate third baseman Brent Widder and an RBI single by junior infielder Cal McGinnis to take a 4-2 lead.  But, that lead would be short-lived, as a lead-off walk by Indiana State and a two-run home run by outfielder Dominic Listi would tie the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the eighth.  The Sycamores would add on an unearned run to grab a 5-4 lead, and ISU reliever Jacob Pruitt (3-2) would make the lead stand up by working a scoreless ninth inning to seal the victory.

Shallenberger was the only Purple Ace with a multi-hit day, going 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.  Shortstop Randal Diaz went 3-for-3 with a run scored and RBI to lead Indiana State, while McGill went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.

With the victory, Indiana State improved to 35-10 overall and 18-4 in the Missouri Valley Conference.  Evansville, meanwhile, dropped to 28-21 overall and 14-8 in the MVC with the loss.  The series will continue on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. central time.  Graduate LHP Donovan Schultz (3-1, 6.01 ERA) will get the start for UE.  Saturday’s game can be heard live in the Tri-State area on 107.1 FM-WJPS and seen live on-line on ESPN+.

* Softball completes season at MVC Championship

Just one day after earning their first Missouri Valley Conference Championship victory since 2013, the University of Evansville softball team fell short against the #2 seed Northern Iowa by a score of 12-3 at Marian Kneer Stadium.

After UNI took a 4-0 lead in the first inning, Marah Wood drilled a 3-run home run to left to get UE within one.  Unfortunately, the Panthers added eight more runs to their tally to finish the game in five innings.  Evansville notched four hits in the contest with Wood, Taylor Howe, Zoe Frossard and Niki Bode picking up one apiece.

UNI had a big start, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first inning including two scoring on a wild pitch.  Despite the early deficit, the Purple Aces stormed back in the top half of the second.  Hannah Hood led off with a walk while Taylor Howe had a 1-out single.  With two outs, Marah Wood approached the plate and connected on a 3-run home run to left field to get the Aces within one.

It did not take long for the Panthers counter as three runs crossed the plate in the bottom half of the second, highlighted by a 2-run home run from Alexis Pupillo.  A walk by Taylor Howe and infield single from pinch hitter Niki Bode saw UE look to cut into the deficit before three quick outs ended the threat and kept things at 7-3.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Panthers put the finishing touches on the game, adding five runs as they pulled away to take the 12-3 victory.  Taylor Hogan paced the UNI offense with a 3-for-3 day with two RBI and a run while Madison Parks went 2-3 with two runs and an RBI.

Sydney Weatherford made the start on short just one day of rest while Megan Brenton recorded the final out of the game.

* Aces advance in MVC Championship

Wednesday’s 2024 Missouri Valley Conference Championship opener saw the 10th-seeded University of Evansville softball team earn a 4-1 win over the #7 seed Drake on at Marian Kneer Stadium.

With the win, the Purple Aces earned their first win in the championship since 2013.  Hannah Hood went 1-3 with two RBI, a walk and run to pace the offense.  Zoe Frossard, Alexa Davis and Taylor Howe recorded two hits apiece.  Sydney Weatherford pitched a gem, allowing one run on nine hits.

Frossard looked to get the Purple Aces rolling in the early moments, opening the game with a single to left.  Brooke Voss later reached on an error before the runners were stranded on base.  Sydney Weatherford returned the favor in the bottom of the frame, holding the Bulldogs scoreless with a pair of runners left on base.

Hannah Hood opened the second with a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch.  Alexa Davis came through with a bases hit through the right side to bring in Hood and give UE a 1-0 lead.  Davis and Taylor Howe came through once again to get things rolling in the top of the fourth.  The duo each posted their second single of the day to set the table for Marah Wood.  Her RBI groundout made it a 2-0 game.

Weatherford retired eight batters in a row, but with two outs in the bottom of the 4th, Drake strung together three hits in a row to pick up their first run of the game.

It did not take long for the Aces to respond.  Frossard and Jess Willsey led the 5th off with back-to-back singles while advancing to second and third on Jenna Nink’s groundout.  That brought Hood to the plate and she came through with a 2-run single that pushed the lead to 4-1.

From there, Weatherford got the job done, shutting down the Bulldogs to clinch the win.  UE advances to face #2 seed UNI on Thursday at 4 p.m.
