Upcoming Events

* Bookrush Weekend Hours

The UE Bookstore will have extended hours this weekend for Bookrush. On Friday, August 17, the store will be open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; on Saturday, August 18, the store will be open 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.; and Sunday, August 19 the store will be open NOON to 3 p.m.

 
* Dance Team Auditions

The University of Evansville Aces Dance Team invites all eligible students to audition for the Dance Team for the 2012-2013 season. Auditions will be held on August 30 from 8 pm to 10 pm and August 31 from 6 pm to 9 pm. The first day of auditions will consist of learning a short, choreographed dance and practicing technique. The second day will consist of showing examples of required technique, preforming the choreographed routine, showcasing 1 minute of original original choreography to music (this should be prepared prior to auditions), and a short interview. Auditions will be held in the Small Gym of the Carson Center.

Information about the 2012-2013 season will be provided at the call out meeting on August 27 from 9 pm to 10 pm in Room 113, Carson Center.

A private or video audition may be arranged if needed and will be allowed at the discretion of the coaching staff.

There is a $20 audition fee. Please refrain from wearing baggy clothing during auditions. Footwear is required.

Info You Should Know

* Families and Children Needed for Upcoming UE Basketball Commercial

Attention UE families: would you and your children like to be in an upcoming commercial for the new family section at men’s basketball games at the Ford Center?  The athletics department and AcesTV are looking for young children (ages 14 and under) and family members to be involved in a video shoot for an upcoming commercial which will take place on Tuesday night, August 21 from 6-8 pm at the Ford Center.  Children and parents are asked to wear either white or purple UE gear.  Anyone who is interested should RSVP to David Klass in the athletics department by phone at extension 1024.

 
* Libraries Announces Fall Semester 2012 Schedule of Hours

UE Libraries will observe the following schedule of hours for fall semester 2012. Fall semester hours begin on Wednesday, August 22.  Exceptions to regular hours schedule will be announced in advance.  Contact William Louden, University Librarian, with questions at 488.2376  or  wflouden@evansville.edu.

* Berger Award Winners

Congratulations to Maggie Stevenson and Chris Mohn, winners of the 2012 Sydney and Sadelle Berger Awards. The awards are presented each year to members of the University of Evansville faculty who demonstrate exceptional scholarly activity and service.

Stevenson, an assistant professor of psychology, received the award for scholarship, and Mohn, an associate professor of Spanish, earned the award for service. Charlie Berger, a 1969 UE graduate and local attorney with the law firm Berger & Berger, presented both awards Tuesday afternoon at the University’s annual Fall Faculty and Administrators Conference.

The Berger Awards are presented annually in memory of Sadelle and Sydney Berger. Sadelle was a UE graduate and lifelong member of the Academy of Arts and Sciences at UE, while Sydney was a well-known local attorney. Both dedicated their lives to public service. The Berger family established the endowment to give recognition to faculty at the University of Evansville.

 
* Margaret McMullan

UE Professor Margaret McMullan’s novel Sources of Light is the 2011-2012 Special Award Winner, just announced by the Mississippi Library Association. The award will be presented at a banquet during the association's annual conference to be held October 25, in Natchez, Mississippi. McMullan’s sixth novel, Sources of Light is now available on Kindle and in paperback from Graphia Paperbacks, a division of Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. Set in 1962 Jackson, Mississippi, Sources of Light “powerfully portrays the bravery and loss of a tumultuous time,” according to Publishers Weekly. Pulitzer-Prize winning journalist Jerry Mitchell wrote, "McMullan's book has become a way for teachers to talk with students about the civil rights movement and about race." An American Library Association Best Book for Young Adults, a 2011 Best Book of Indiana, and a book selection for dozens of school and community reading programs, Sources of Light was nominated for The National Book Award. McMullan is the National Author Winner of the 2011 Eugene and Marilyn Glick Indiana Authors Award and the Melvin M. Peterson Endowed Chair in Literature and Writing at the University of Evansville.

 

Athletics

* Jesse Sharp Named to Preseason MVC All-Conference Team

On Tuesday, the Missouri Valley Conference announced its preseason poll along with preseason all-conference team, which was voted on by the league coaches earlier this month.University of Evansville senior Jesse Sharp was the school’s representative on the 13-man all-conference team.  The forward from Evansville, Ind. led the Aces with 15 points on the strength of four goals and a team-high seven assists.

Last season, the Aces began the year 4-2, but won just once following a September 18 win over Memphis.  Evansville is hoping to start fast this season and keep that going through league play.  In the poll of the league’s coaches, UE was picked to finish sixth out of seven institutions.

Preseason play begins on Wednesday as the Aces will play host to the University of Indianapolis.  The match is set to begin at 6 p.m. inside Arad McCutchan Stadium.

* Pre-season Opener forMen's Soccer Set for Today

Exhibition play is set to get underway for the University of Evansville men’s soccer team as they will play host to the University of Indianapolis on Wednesday evening at 6 p.m. at Arad McCutchan Stadium.Evansville is looking to rebound after a 5-11-1 campaign last season and returns seven starters including Preseason MVC All-Conference player Jesse Sharp.  As a junior, Sharp led the team with 15 points, tallying four goals and seven assists while playing in all 17 games while making 16 starts.  Sophomore Ryan Stallings was second on the squad last season, scoring 12 points including a team-high five goals. 

Goalie Eric Teppen got a great deal of experience in his freshman campaign last season, starting 14 contests for UE while saving 76.2% of the shots he faced.  He shut out opponents on three occasions and looks to build on the success of last season.

Along with the returners, the Aces welcome eight freshmen.  The class includes four forwards, three midfielders and a defender.

Wednesday’s opponent, the University of Indianapolis, put forth a 12-5-1 mark last season and are picked to finish third in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, just behind top-ranked Rockhurst and Quincy.

Following Wednesday’s match against the Greyhounds, UE will have one more preseason tune-up as they will travel to Angola, Indiana to face the University of Wisconsin on Sunday afternoon.  Sunday’s match is set for a 2 p.m.  start.  Fans attending the contest are reminded that Angola is in the eastern time zone.

 
* Men's Soccer Announces Time Change for Sunday Road Match

Men’s soccer coach Mike Jacobs has announced a time change for Sunday’s exhibition match against Wisconsin.Originally set for a 12 p.m. start, the match has now been moved to 2 p.m.  The Aces will take on the Badgers in Angola, Indiana.  Fans are reminded that Angola is in the eastern time zone, but all times listed are in central.

Exhibition play officially opens for the Aces on Wednesday when they host the University of Indianapolis at Arad McCutchan Stadium at 6 p.m.
 

 
* Softball Team Managers Needed

The softball team is looking for managers to assist with the 2012-13 season. Those with baseball or softball experience and the flexibility to attend practice are welcome. Tnere is also a need for a film manager capable of handling and using camera equipment, working with computers, and using video editing software. Stipend included toward 2012-13 school year.
