Prior to the 7:00 p.m. event, Sarah will speak and hold a Q&A session with Schroeder School of Business students at 4:00 p.m. in SOBA 170 (Smythe Lecture Hall). Schroeder students should contact Megan Conapinski at mt263@evansville.edu to register.

Sarah Frey is the founder and CEO of Frey Farms, a Certified Woman-Owned Agribusiness headquartered in southern Illinois. Frey Farms is a leading US grower, shipper and marketer of fresh fruits and vegetables.

Sarah has been described by the New York Times as America’s Pumpkin Queen. Frey Farms is best known as being America’s largest producer of fresh pumpkins; but watermelons are, in fact, their top commodity. Sarah founded Tsamma (sah-mah) watermelon juice, which was the first watermelon juice distributed nationally.

She is also the author of the best-selling book, The Growing Season: How I Built a New Life – and Saved an American Farm. Guests are invited to bring their copy to have signed after the event. Sarah will also have 25 copies of her book for free, available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Sarah’s entrepreneurial spirit was nurtured at the young age of eight, while accompanying her mother on a summer produce route selling direct to grocery retailers in southern Illinois. The summer she turned 16, Sarah took over the produce route and expanded it from 12 independent grocery stores to over 150 - then purchased her family’s small 100-acre farm. She ran her full-time business while attending high school and college simultaneously. At 19, Sarah negotiated with Wal-Mart, the nation’s largest retailer, turning her vision into reality with an expansive growth into retail grocery that enabled her to bring her four older brothers back to the family farm and into a now-flourishing business.

* April 3 Andiron Lecture by Robert Baines - 4:30 PM at SOBA 162 (Harkness Hall)

Philosophical Allusions in James Joyce’s Finnegans Wake, by Robert Baines, PhD, Associate Professor of English

Robert Baines, PhD, is an Associate Professor of English at the University of Evansville. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in English Language and Lit- erature from the University of Oxford, as well as a Master of Philosophy in Anglo-Irish Literature from Trinity College Dublin, and a PhD in English from Trinity College Dublin. He is also on track to complete a Master of Arts in Digital Humanities at Concordia University Ann Arbor this spring. He has published articles in numerous collections and journals, including the Dublin James Joyce Journal, European Joyce Studies, and the Journal of Modern Literature. His book, Philosophical Allusions in James Joyce’s Finnegans Wake, was published in 2023.

Philosophy is important in all of Joyce’s works, but it his final novel which most fully engages with that field. Finnegans Wake contains significant allusions to a whole host of philosophers, ranging from Aristotle to Confucius, Bergson to Kant. In introducing his new study of Finnegans Wake’s philosophical allusions, Baines demonstrates how we can understand those allusions individually, how we can define the relationships between them, and how we can grasp those allusions as a totality. What this largest perspective reveals is that the philosophical allusions of Joyce’s last novel form a coherent network of ideas, thinkers, and texts that is central to the conceptual structure of Finnegans Wake.

* Employees - Skin Cancer Screenings

In preparation for Skin Cancer awareness month in May, the UE clinic will be offering Skin Cancer screenings during the month of April. According to the American Academy of Dermatology it is estimated that 9,500 people in the U.S. are diagnosed with skin cancer every day. This number is continuing to rise as skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States.

Please note that the screening will be a full body skin exam. Please see the tips below on fully preparing for your screening!

  • During your Skin Cancer screening, you will be asked to remove clothing and will be provided a paper gown for privacy. This is a full body skin exam!

  • This 20-minute appointment is a dedicated Skin Cancer screening. If needed, follow up appointments may be scheduled if additional procedures are indicated. If you are needing any additional clinic services or medication refills, please schedule a separate clinic appointment as you would outside of this event.

  • For patients who are referred to a dermatologist, please note that wait times can vary as Dermatology offices often schedule several weeks or months out.

  • Additional ways to prepare for your screening; wear loose clothes, avoid wearing makeup, keep your hair loose so your scalp can be examined, and bring a  list of any concerns you want to discuss with the provider (skin spots, patches, or moles).

Skin Cancer screenings will be offered by appointment only to those eligible to use the UE clinic. If you are interested in scheduling your Skin Cancer screening, please follow the link below to view dates, times, and to sign up.

* SIUE Tops Baseball Aces, 14-6

The visiting SIUE baseball team erupted for 10 runs in the final three innings on Tuesday night to secure a 14-6 victory over the University of Evansville Purple Aces at German American Bank Field at Charles H. Braun Stadium in Evansville.

The Cougars scored two unearned runs in the seventh inning to grab a one-run lead, before scoring three runs in the eighth inning and five more in the ninth inning to blow things open.  Outfielder Lucas Spence led the way for SIUE, going 4-for-6 with a triple, four runs scored and four RBI.  All four RBI, three of his hits and three of his runs came in the final three innings of the game.

SIUE struck first in the third inning on a solo home run by second baseman Mack Mitchell and the first run of the game by Spence, who singled and eventually scored on a wild pitch.

The score would remain 2-0 in favor of SIUE until the fourth inning, when UE graduate designated hitter Chase Hug launched a three-run home run to right field to give UE a 3-2 lead.

The Cougars would tie the game at 3-3 in the fifth inning, before UE opened up a 5-3 lead with two runs in the bottom half of the frame.  Graduate third baseman Brent Widder roped his second double of the game to score the inning’s first run, before junior outfielder Harrison Taubert came through with an RBI ground out to give UE a 5-3 lead.

SIUE scored a run in the sixth inning to trim the UE lead to 5-4, before taking the lead with two unearned runs in the seventh inning.  Spence started the rally with a one-out single.  Then, after a strikeout and a hit-by-pitch put runners on first and second, Spence raced home on a fielding error to tie the game and a throwing error put two men in scoring position with two outs.   Then, a controversial balk call on a 3-2 count brought in the go-ahead run for SIUE and gave the Cougars a 6-5 lead.  Spence then broke things open in the eighth inning with a two-run triple as SIUE went on to win.

Spence and first baseman Ryan Niedzwiedz both had four hits and four RBI each to lead SIUE.  Hug drove in three runs for UE, while Widder and senior first baseman Kip Fougerousse had two hits each.  For Widder, it came in his 200th career collegiate game.

With the victory, SIUE improves to 8-17 overall.  Evansville, meanwhile, falls to 9-15 overall with the loss.  Evansville will return to action next on Thursday night, as the Purple Aces will host Southern Illinois in a three-game Missouri Valley Conference series.  First-pitch is set for 6 p.m. and Thursday’s game can be heard live on 107.1 FM-WJPS and seen live on ESPN+.

* Season ends in second round of Ro CBI

Kenny Strawbridge Jr. scored a team-high 11 points but it was a 22-point game from Alex Schumacher that paced Seattle to a 71-57 win over the University of Evansville men’s basketball team in the second round of the Ro CBI at the Ocean Center.

It was a banner season for the Purple Aces who made their first postseason appearance since 2015.  UE completed the season with 17 wins, its highest tally since 2017-18.  In its Arch Madness opener, the Aces grabbed their first win in St. Louis since 2017 as they took down Illinois State.  In November, Evansville won its first six games of the season, the best start since the 1964-65 NCAA National Championship squad.

Those are just a few of the accomplishments for head coach David Ragland and his program as they complete the 2023-24 season.

Chuck Bailey III and Cam Haffner each recorded eight points while Tanner Cuff added six points and a team-high 5 boards.

Seattle took the early 2-0 lead as Evansville fought back to tie the score each time.  With the Redhawks holding an 8-6 lead, Tanner Cuff knocked down a triple to give the Purple Aces their first lead at 9-8 at the 15:26 mark.

After Seattle tied it up at 9-9, Sekou Kalle converted back-to-back buckets to make it a 13-9 game.  Evansville continued to add to the lead as a layup by Antonio Thomas extended the advantage to 20-12 as the half entered its final eight minutes.  The Redhawks clawed their way back, getting within two with 2:39 left in the period.

Kenny Strawbridge Jr. hit a layup before a turnover led to another Cuff 3-pointer that made it a 31-24 game entering the final minute.  Following a 4-0 run by Seattle, Gage Bobe drilled a triple in the final seconds to send the Aces to the break with a 34-28 lead.  The Aces shot 50% in the opening period.

Through the opening two minutes of the second half, the 6-point lead held strong as two Strawbridge free throws pushed the lead to 36-30.  Over the next four minutes, Seattle scored seven in a row to go back up by one, but at the 13:56 mark, Bobe knocked down another triple to put Evansville back in front.

The Redhawks wrestled away a 43-40 lead as the game moved into the last 12 minutes as Josh Hughes made a nice move at the basket to make it a 1-point game.  Unfortunately, Seattle responded in a big way.  Over the next seven minutes, the Redhawks outscored UE by an 18-2 margin to put things out of reach, going up 61-44 with 4:04 remaining.

Evansville’s relentless attitude showed in the final minutes as they never gave up.  Cam Haffner and Antonio Thomas each connected on triples to cut the deficit to nine points with just under two minutes on the clock, but that was as close as they would get with Seattle clinching the win.

It was a tale of two halves for both teams.  UE shot 50% in the first, but a 31.8% second-half saw them finish the game at 42.3%.  Seattle shot 40.9% in the opening 20 minutes before finishing the second half at 48.3%.  Their final tally finished at 45.1%.

* UE Baseball Continues Homestand Tuesday Against SIUE

The University of Evansville baseball team will continue a season-long eight-game homestand on Tuesday night, as the Purple Aces will welcome the SIUE Cougars to German American Bank Field at Charles H. Braun Stadium for a non-conference contest.  First-pitch is set for 6 p.m.

Evansville will bring a 9-13 overall record into Tuesday night’s game.  The Purple Aces are trying to snap a season-long five-game losing streak, as UE has dropped three one-run decisions in the last five contests.  UE is led offensively by graduate outfielder Mark Shallenberger, who will bring a team-best .398 batting average into Tuesday’s contest.  Shallenberger currently ranks third in NCAA Division I baseball with 15 hit-by-pitches this season, as he is just one HBP shy of the national lead.  Career-wise, Shallenberger ranks fifth among active Division I players with 47 career HBPs, and he is just four shy of UE’s career mark of 51, set by Troy Beilsmith in 2021.  He currently ranks 11th among Division I players in on-base percentage this year at .561.

SIUE will bring a 7-17 overall record into Tuesday’s game after winning two out of three games against Lindenwood to open Ohio Valley Conference play over the weekend.  Junior outfielder Lucas Spencer currently paces the SIUE offense with a .398 batting average.  Spencer has collected eight doubles, two triples, and a home run offensively for SIUE, and he has been red-hot as of late, as he will ride a nine-game hitting streak into Tuesday’s contest.

Evansville out-lasted SIUE, 11-7, last March in Edwardsville, Illinois to win the only season meeting a year ago.  UE launched four home runs in the contest, led by current graduate catcher Brendan Hord, who went 4-for-6 with two home runs and four RBI.  All-time, UE leads the series 18-8.

Due to the UE men’s basketball team advancing on in the CBI Tournament, there will be no radio coverage of Tuesday night’s game.  Live stats will be available on GoPurpleAces.com.
