Dr. David Green, professor of History at Harlaxton College, was presented the Exemplary Teacher Award at the Spring Faculty Meeting on Thursday, February 29. The award recognizes exceptional achievements in the classroom by creating distinctive opportunities and promoting intellectual, moral, social, and emotional growth of our students.  Dr. Green teaches British Studies and medieval history at Harlaxton and exemplifies these traits through his student interaction and teaching.

The Margaret E. Schriefer Liberal Arts Scholarship was established for the University of Evansville in loving memory of Margaret E. Schriefer. This scholarship will be awarded annually to a deserving student, covering full tuition, books, supplies, materials, and laboratory fees. To be considered for this scholarship, students must meet the following qualifications:

• Must be enrolled at the University of Evansville and have a major of study in Literature, English, Music or Theatre.
• Must be a natural-born citizen of the United States of America with no prior criminal record, other than minor traffic violations.
• Must be a free and accepted Mason in good standing in a local lodge under the authority of the Grand Lodge of its state, or be the descendant, sibling, or nephew/niece of a Master Mason in good standing in his respective lodge under the authority of the Grand Lodge of its respective state. If the related Mason shall not be living at the time of the student’s consideration for this scholarship, a letter shall be obtained from the Lodge of the related Mason to the effect that the related Mason was in good standing at the time of his death. 
• Must have and maintain a "C" average

UE students seeking financial aid or intending to use loan funds for summer courses at UE should complete a Summer Financial Aid Application and return it to the Office of Student Financial Services (Olmsted 105) however is most convenient by April 25, 2024. The application will allow our office to assess your financial aid and loan eligibility.

Work-Study:

On-campus jobs are available for continuing UE students during the summer. You do not need to be eligible for need-based Federal Work-Study during the academic year in order to apply. You may also apply regardless of your enrollment in summer courses. Applications will be available within the Student Employment area of Self-Service.

The General Board of Higher Education & Ministry awards scholarships to United Methodist college students in the United States. The Fall 2024 deadline to apply for these scholarships is March 13th. To apply or get more information about the application process, visit GBHEM.org.

University of Evansville professor Dr. Cindy Crowe was selected to present the keynote speech along with Emory University professor Dr. Yun Kim at the 2024 Phi Sigma Iota Conference in February.

Phi Sigma Iota, founded in 1922, is the International Foreign Language Honor Society and the highest academic honor in the field of foreign languages. UE's Epsilon Beta Chapter was installed on April 8, 2000.

Dr. Kim, Associate Professor of Linguistics at Emory, presented her research on the neurological and cognitive benefits of multilingualism. Dr. Crowe, Assistant Professor of Spanish, presented from her research on the individual and societal advantages of foreign language learning, factors that influence students’ choice of major, and initiatives to strengthen world language programs.

“It was a privilege to speak on the importance of language study to an audience comprised of university foreign language professors and students," said Dr. Crowe. "I am hopeful that some of the research I shared might be useful as we collectively strive to enhance our world language programs at a time when the challenges of our contemporary global society necessitate an understanding of languages and cultures.”

“To meet these global challenges, we strongly encourage our UE students to continue their foreign language studies past the required level so they may obtain all the benefits of language study and connect with cultures other than their own in order to build bridges and intercultural harmony."

After scoring two runs in the first and four in the second, Indiana State defeated the University of Evansville softball team by a final score of 9-0 at Tri-State Orthopaedics Field at James & Dorothy Cooper Stadium on Tuesday.

Indiana State used the long ball to open a 6-0 lead in the opening two innings.  Abby Robakowski opened the scoring with a RBI single with a second run scoring on an error on the play.  Danielle Henning and Robakowski each had 2-run homers in the second to push he lead to 6-0.

Evansville had its first scoring opportunity in the bottom of the third, loading the bases as Zoe Frossard picked up the Purple Aces’ first hit of the game before a flyout got ISU out of the inning.  The Sycamores responded with a 3-run fourth frame to push the lead to 9-0.

ISU would hold strong from there, taking the MVC opener by a 9-0 final.

Frossard and Alexa Davis accounted for the Aces hits.  Mikayla Jolly tossed three innings with eight runs scoring, six of which were earned.  Elle Jarrett gave up one earned run in two frames.  Lauren Sackett threw the complete game for ISU on the way to her 6th win of the season.

Wednesday night will feature another meeting between the squads at 5 p.m.

The University of Evansville baseball team will return home briefly on Wednesday night to host the visiting Southeast Missouri State Redhawks at German American Bank Field at Charles H. Braun Stadium.  First-pitch is set for 6 p.m.

Evansville will look to get back in the win column on Wednesday night after dropping three games at SEC power Mississippi State over the weekend.  UE will bring a 7-8 overall record into Wednesday’s contest.  Despite getting limited by Mississippi State’s pitching staff over the weekend, Evansville still ranks in the NCAA’s top 25 in three major offensive categories entering this week’s action.  UE is currently sixth in the nation in doubles (25), 21st in total hits (173) and 23rd in team batting average (.322).

Graduate outfielder Mark Shallenberger continues to pace the UE attack with a .407 batting average.  Shallenberger has reached base safely in 31-straight games dating back to last year, and he has done so by reaching base by any means necessary.  He currently leads UE in batting average, walks (12) and hit-by-pitches (nine).  His nine HBPs are currently tied for the top spot in the Missouri Valley Conference, and he ranks ninth nationally overall.

Southeast Missouri State will bring a 7-10 overall record into Wednesday’s game.  The Redhawks will be looking to snap a two-game losing streak, as they dropped the final two games of a series at Marshall over the weekend.  Junior outfielder Michael Mugan currently leads the SEMO offense with a .353 batting average, while he is second on the team with four home runs.  As a team, the Redhawks have launched 24 home runs already this year.

Evansville and SEMO split a home-and-home series last year, with both teams winning on the other’s home field.  UE has opened the 2024 season on fire at home, as the Purple Aces are 4-1 at home this year thanks to an offense which has hit .401 as a team and scored 63 runs in five home contests.

University of Evansville divers Madison Rollett (Evansville, Ind./Reitz) and Levi McKinney (Boonville, Ind./Boonville) will represent the UE diving program at the highest level this week, as they will both take part in the NCAA Zone C Diving Championships in Louisville, Kentucky.  Rollett will compete in the women’s one-meter competition on Thursday beginning at noon central, while McKinney will compete in the men’s one-meter competition on Friday afternoon.

Rollett earned first-team all-Missouri Valley Conference honors this year for her efforts at the 2024 MVC Swimming & Diving Championships.  She placed fifth on the one-meter board, and was second in the three-meter competition at the Valley Championships.  Rollett posted a Zone qualifying score of 279.90 on the one-meter board in January in a diving dual meet with Southern Indiana.  She will be the first UE diver to compete in the Zone Championships since former MVC Diver of the Year Courtney Coverdale represented UE in the competition in 2017.

McKinney, meanwhile, has been a two-time Mid-American Conference Diver of the Week this year, and placed sixth overall in the MAC on the three-meter board this past weekend at the MAC Championships.  McKinney has posted a pair of NCAA Zone qualifying scores on the one-meter board this year.  McKinney is the first male diver at UE to compete in the Zone Championships since Andy Balczo did it in back-to-back years in 2010 and 2011.

Graduate center Barbora Tomancova has been recognized for her work both on the court and in the classroom by the Missouri Valley Conference.

For the first time as a Purple Ace, Tomancova has been named to the Missouri Valley Conference’s Scholar-Athlete First Team. Along with five other Valley athletes, she was honored as part of the 2024 Missouri Valley Conference Women's Basketball Scholar-Athlete First Team, announced today by the league office. Drake forward Anna Miller was named the State Farm Scholar Athlete of the Year. Voting was conducted by the league's sports information directors.

Tomancova holds a 4.0 grade point average while pursuing her Master of Science degree in Health Services Administration. She earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology from Evansville the year prior. Tomancova currently leads the Aces in rebounds per game, averaging 8.1 boards in 20.9 minutes. She is also third on the team in blocks over the regular season with 13.

Others named to the First Team along with Tomancova include Kiley Bess of Indiana State, Grace Boffeli of UNI, Tuti Jones, and Tessa Miller of Belmont and Miller.  A total of 22 players were honored across four Scholar-Athlete Teams in the MVC.

The criteria for the MVC Scholar-Athlete Team voting parallels the CSC (College Sports Communicators) standards for Academic All-America nominations. Student-athletes must be at least a sophomore academically and athletically and must be enrolled at their institution at the time of nomination either as undergraduates or graduate students. [The 12-month residency requirement for undergraduate transfers is no longer required.] An undergraduate student-athlete must have at least a 3.50 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale), and a graduate student-athlete must have at least a 3.50 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) as both an undergraduate and a grad student unless they are in their first semester as a graduate student and don't have an established graduate GPA.

For the first time in her collegiate career, University of Evansville softball senior Marah Wood has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week.

Wood put together a big week at the plate for the Purple Aces, ,batting .429 with two home runs, seven RBI and six runs scored while slugging .857.  After going 1-3 in Wednesday’s opener against Lindenwood, Wood picked up the biggest hit of the year for the Aces in game two.  With her team trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the 6th, Wood launched a 2-run home run that would prove to be the game winner while giving Evansville its first win of the season.  She went 2-3 in that contest.

Saturday’s victory over Bellarmine saw her go 3-4 with a RBI, two runs and a stolen base.  Wood opened the day on Sunday with a 2-3 game against St. Bonaventure while adding her second home run of the week, three RBI, a run and steal.  She added a hit, RBI and two more runs in the weekend finale that saw UE finish with its fourth win in five games.  Just as impressive – Wood struck out just twice in 21 plate appearances over the course of the week.

The University of Evansville track and field team is gearing up for its outdoor season starting in mid-March.

The Purple Aces will participate in six meets before MVC Championships in mid-May. UE will begin its season at a Valley school with the Margaret Simmons Invite on March 22 and 23 at Murray State. Evansville’s other March outdoor meet will be the team’s longest trip of the year to Raleigh, N.C. for the Raleigh Relays on March 28 through March 30.

The Aces will participate in two single-day meets during outdoor competition. The first will be on April 5 at the Jim Vargo Invitational in Louisville, Ky. UE will then get almost two weeks off before its next meet at Eastern Kentucky’s Rick Erdmann Twilight meet, on April 20 and April 21. Evansville wraps up the month of April with the Outdoor Music City Challenge in Nashville hosted by Vanderbilt on the 26th and 27th.

The final meet of the regular outdoor season for the Aces will be a one-day meet on Friday, May 3. UE will participate in the Billy Hayes Invitational hosted by Indiana that Friday afternoon. Evansville then wraps up its outdoor season at the MVC Championships, hosted by Indiana State. The Aces will look to improve on their indoor season placements of 10th at the outdoor championships.
