Wellness Day will take place on Monday, February 12. This day is an opportunity for both students and employees to take a break from day-to-day responsibilities and focus on mental and physical health. All UE academic departments and administrative offices will be closed, but dining services will operate with adjusted hours. Café Court will be open from 10:30 a.m. until 6:30 p.m., and Chick-fil-A will be open from noon until 8:00 p.m. Rademacher's Café will be closed. The library will remain open on Wellness Day.

The Catapult Student Leadership Conference is a half-day event full of networking and leadership development. Each year, attendees gain leadership-related knowledge from a destinguished keynote speaker and a variety of breakout sessions put on by community leaders and UE faculty/ staff.

The Department of Theatre is casting non-theatre majors as ensemble members of the NYC Taxi Cab Union in the Shanklin Theatre production of WAITING FOR LEFTY, by Clifford Odets. No previous experience required.

Anyone who applies must be available for all technical and performance dates, as well as some occasional rehearsals after Spring Break. Those dates include but are not limited to: technical rehearsals April 6 through 11 and April 17, as well as be available for the run of the show, April 12, 13, 18, 19, 20, and 21.

Visiting Assistant Professor Stacey Yen takes the helm of the final production of the season with Clifford Odet’s WAITING FOR LEFTY. Inspired by true events of a 1934 New York taxicab strike, this fictional retelling creates a powerful mosaic of the trials and tribulations of the working class. First produced in 1935, this play made a sensation of its playwright, who became the theatrical conscience of a generation, and this work remains one of the most celebrated and significant plays of the American Theatre. With the fight for living wages and safe, equitable workplaces continuing to cause political debates, this seminal play illustrates the power of individual protest and the right to reform. Grab your picket sign and get ready to march!

The Eykamp Prize was established by Richard and Rita Eykamp in 2015 to honor Faculty Achievement at the University of Evansville. Recipients of the prize will receive a one-time award of $10,000 in recognition of extraordinary contributions to the University of Evansville as University Citizens. Examples of such contributions include deep and successful involvement in recruiting students; expanding the number, scope, and competitiveness of grant funding for their department; and bringing positive public awareness to the University through scholarship, knowledge, and understanding of their discipline.

Nominations for the Eykamp Prize may come from any member of the University of Evansville community. Nominees should be tenured or tenure-track faculty members at the University of Evansville who have not received the award in the previous five years. Nominations can be submitted in writing or via e-mail to Mary Kessler, Interim Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs/Provost, at mk43@evansville.edu by March 1, 2024. Nominations should include the name of the faculty member and a brief statement of the reasons that they are being nominated.

Recipients of the Eykamp Prize will be selected by an Award Committee, appointed by the Interim EVPAA/Provost that includes members of the faculty, staff, administrators, and a member of the Board of Trustees. The award will be announced and presented at the May Commencement Ceremony.

Mohammad K. Azarian, professor of mathematics, attended the 2024 Joint Mathematics Meetings in San Fransisco, California, January 2-6, where 17 different national mathematics organizations took part. He presented a paper to the American Mathematical Society (AMS) entitled, “Combinatorics of Discrete Functions”. Also, as the chair of the AMS Committee on the Human Rights of Mathematicians, he presided over its annual meeting.

A quiet second half kept the University of Evansville women’s basketball team from its first conference win in a 70-59 loss to the Valparaiso Beacons.

Three players scored in double-figures for the Purple Aces on Sunday afternoon against the Beacons. Guard Madlena Gerke set a season-high on offense scoring 12 points while center Barbora Tomancova led UE on both sides of the ball. The graduate post player put in 15 points while grabbing 11 rebounds, also adding two assists, two steals, and a block. Forward Neveah Thomas also added 10 points for Evansville.

It took both teams over three minutes to find their offense on Sunday afternoon. But once the offenses got going it was a back-and-forth affair. Guard Madlena Gerke led the Aces with five points as she connected on an and-1 opportunity at the four-and-a-half-minute mark. The and-1 spurred a five-point run for UE to keep the lead. But the Beacons responded to take the lead for a minute and a half. Evansville was able to end the quarter on a six-point run capped by a Tené Smith layup to tie the game at 13 all.

The lead was traded early in the second as Valpo connected on an early three. The Aces took it right back on a five-point run that the Beacons would tie. Guard Kynidi Mason Striverson got UE the lead again with Evansville’s first three of the game with 6:07 on the board. The Aces kept control of the lead for over two minutes. Valparaiso regained the upper hand as the quarter went on, ending on a seven-point run to put UE down by seven going into halftime.

It was a hot start to the third for Evansville as Mason Striverson made a layup in less than 20 seconds. But a seven-point run from the Beacons had the Aces down by 12 points. UE grabbed back-to-back baskets to make it only a single-digit deficit. Valpo responded with a basket, but Evansville broke out on a seven-point run from Gerke and guard Lexie Sinclaire to make it only a three-point game. But following two free throws from Gerke, the Aces went scoreless for three minutes and 35 seconds. Thomas ended UE’s scoring drought on a layup assisted by Tomancova with just over a minute left in the third. Tomancova scored for Evansville at the line in the final second of the quarter to make it 57-43.

The start of the fourth quarter was a back-and-forth affair like the beginning of the game. But with a 15-point deficit and only six and a half minutes left in the contest, the Aces couldn’t find their way back to the lead. With no sustained offensive run, UE fell to the Beacons 70-59.

Evansville will have six days off before its next game to close out its current homestand at Meeks Family Fieldhouse. The Aces welcome the Bradley Braves to town for their National Girls and Women in Sports Day game. UE will celebrate with a clinic for local girls’ 8th grade and under before tipping off against the Braves at 5 p.m.

After a back-and-forth battle, the University of Evansville women’s basketball team fell just short in a 70-61 loss to the UIC Flames.

The Purple Aces saw their first second-half lead of Missouri Valley Conference play in a gritty matchup against the Flames on Friday night. Foul trouble for UE in the game's final five minutes hindered Evansville in the nine-point loss. Post players center Barbora Tomancova, forward Nevaeh Thomas, and forward Maggie Hartwig all scored double-figures to lead the Aces on offense.

“I’m really proud of our fight,” said Head Coach Robyn Scherr-Wells following the game. “I thought we showed really good physical toughness. We got off to a really tough start and we showed good mental toughness to fight through that and get back in the game making it a game most of the way.

“We just struggled to put enough points on the board in the second half, especially in the fourth quarter. We couldn’t get shots to fall. We couldn’t hang onto possessions with a few too many turnovers. But overall, I think we had some good growth from our team and some really good fight.”

The Aces took some time to find their footing against UIC, finding themselves down 10 points early. UE’s post players began to get the offense moving as Tomancova, Hartwig, and Thomas had 12 of Evansville’s 16 points in the first quarter. The Aces benefited from 12 attempts at the line, completing 10 to make it a seven-point game going into the second.

UE had one of its best second quarters of the year, shooting 61.5% from the floor for 18 points to the Flames’ 12. Evansville started the quarter on a five-point run before going basket for basket with UIC. A run for the Flames made it a double-digit deficit for the Aces with six minutes left in the first half. But UE bounced back on an eight-point run making it only a two-point deficit. With 10 seconds left in the first half, guard Julia Palomo hit a reverse layup for an and-1 opportunity to make it a one-point game.

Evansville and UIC traded the lead to start the second half four times in the first two minutes. The Flames pulled away first on an eight-point run. The Aces responded following the under-five timeout and regained the lead after putting up eight straight points. In the final two and a half minutes of the third quarter, UIC regained momentum as UE faced a four-point deficit.

It was a tough quarter on offense for Evansville as the Flames pulled away for a 13-point lead. The Aces' first basket came in the fourth minute as Thomas found success in the paint and guard Lexie Sinclair followed it up with a three-point jump shot. But UE soon found themselves in foul trouble as Tomancova picked up her fifth with 4:33 on the clock and guard Tene Smith fouled out in the final minute. Sinclair was able to sink another three to end the game, but it wouldn’t be enough as Evansville fell to UIC 70-61.

Tomancova and Thomas led the Aces on offense with 12 points each while Hartwig added 10 points of her own. Hartwig then led UE on defense with seven rebounds and Tomancova had Evansville’s only two blocks.

The Aces return to Meeks Family Fieldhouse on Sunday afternoon. UE will tip off against the Valparaiso Beacons at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 28.

A gritty effort across the board on Saturday saw the University of Evansville men’s basketball team earn a 58-54 victory over Illinois State in Missouri Valley Conference action at the Ford Center.

“That was a Valley game; very physical, gritty game that was far from pretty, but we found a way.  I thought our character improved through that win.  They (ISU) opened 10-2 but we climbed back in it,” UE head men’s basketball coach David Ragland said after the win.  “At the end of the day, we found a way to win.”

Yacine Toumi put forth another outstanding effort, draining eight of his 11 field goal tries on his way to 17 points.  Josh Hughes scored 11 points while picking up four boards and two blocks.  Tanner Cuff was the Purple Aces’ third double figure scorer with 10 points along with six boards and a pair of blocks.  ISU had three double digit scorers with Darius Burford scoring a game-high 18 points.

Illinois State began the day with the opening four points as UE started 0-for-4 from the field with three turnovers throughout the first four minutes.  Josh Hughes got Evansville’s first score of the day on a putback, but the Redbirds continued their strong start, taking a 10-2 lead at the 10:58 mark.  Evansville’s early woes saw them hit one of their opening seven attempts while turning it over five times.

Tanner Cuff connected on the Purple Aces’ second field goal of the afternoon and was the start of an 8-0 run that tied the game at 10-10.  His 3-point play was followed by a triple from Chuck Bailey III and a Hughes jumper that knotted the game at the 10:56 mark.  ISU quickly rebounded to post the next four points, but Yacine Toumi converted his first two baskets of the game to give UE its first lead at 16-14 with 5:25 left in the half.

In its ensuing possession, ISU tied it up at 16-16 and would again force a tie with a 20-20 score entering the final three minutes.  Evansville put together its best stretch to that point, outscoring the Redbirds by a 7-1 margin to take a 27-21 halftime lead.  Hughes registered the last five points for UE, including a 3-pointer.  The defense for the Aces forced a 0-for-12 showing from long range by ISU in the half.

Just over a minute into the final period, Gage Bobe knocked down a 3-pointer to give the Aces their first double figure lead of the game at 32-22.  Kenny Strawbridge Jr. converted a 3-point play to extend the lead to 13 points.  As fast as Evansville extended the lead, Illinois State rallied back.  Outscoring UE by a 13-4 margin, the Redbirds cut the deficit to 39-35 with 12 minutes left.

Toumi put an end to the stretch, but ISU kept things within two possessions over the ensuing four minutes until a free throw made it a 43-40 game at the 8:51 mark.  The Aces slowly regained control, retaking an 8-point lead entering the final four minutes.  Most of the damage was done by Toumi, who had five points in a stretch that extended the lead to 53-45.  Evansville remained in solid shape when a Cam Haffner free throw made it a 56-50 game with 1:40 remaining, but ISU made one final push.

Two free throws saw the Redbirds make it a 4-point game and, following a UE miss, Johnny Kinziger connected on a jumper to cut the deficit to two with 49 ticks on the clock.  Evansville’s ensuing possession saw Toumi grab an offensive rebound as the shot clock was winding down.  UE was unable to get another shot off, giving the ball back to the Redbirds with 19 seconds left.  Suffocating defense by the Aces forced an ISU turnover and two Antonio Thomas free throws sealed the win.

Evansville shot 43.8% while the defense held Illinois State to 32.0%.  UE’s defense held the Redbirds to 1-of-21 shooting from 3-point range.  The rebounding statistic went ISU’s way by a 33-32 tally.

Another home game is on tap when the Aces welcome UIC to the Ford Center on Wednesday evening.

Freshman runner Cedrik Flipo set a new program record in the 400-meter race on Saturday morning at the PNC Lenny Lyles Invitational.

A new program record, a podium finish, and three personal bests highlighted the Purple Aces performance at the Lenny Lyles Invitational hosted by Louisville. UE's lone new program record came in the men's 400-meter as Cedrik Flipo (Beloeil, Quebec, Canada) ran in 49.11 seconds to break the previous record set in 1977 by Jeff Korb. Freshman Sonja Inzinger (Mautern an der Donau, Austria) had a podium finish in her first collegiate 5000-meter race with a time of 17:42.43 for third place.

"This weekend we competed with a small group of individuals to gain more experience in their events," said Head Coach Brooks LeCompte following the meet. "We had a couple of runners debut in the 5K as well as a freshman debut from Cedrik Flipo, which resulted in breaking one of the oldest standing school records! Most came away with personal bests, so all in all it was a successful trip to Louisville!"

Evansville had two personal bests in the mile race from Rafael Rodriguez (Segovia, Spain) and Nayla Martin (Vaudreuil-Dorion, Quebec, Canada). Rodriguez placed 17th with a time of 4:15.28 while Martin placed 18th with a time of 5:09.84. The Aces also had another distance runner Samuel Lea (Wochester, England) finish eighth in the 5K with a time of 15:06.31. Sprinter Taylor Johnson (Evansville, Ind / Reitz HS) also competed on Saturday morning, racing in the 400-meter with a time of 58.04 seconds.

The full Evansville team returns to action next week, also in Louisville. UE will participate in the PNC Bank Bellarmine Classic on Friday, Feb. 2 starting at 10 a.m.

The University of Evansville swimming team won five races on Saturday, posted 12 podium finishes overall, and produced five swims which rank among UE’s career top 10 in the seven-team UIC Invitational at the FMC Natatorium in Westmont, Illinois.

With the diving team taking Saturday off after both teams competed last night against UIC and Missouri State, the UE swimming team had another strong showing, led by freshman Rebecca Lago (Tezze sul Brenta, Italy).  Lago won both the 50 and 100-Yard Freestyle races in back-to-back events, posting season-best times of 23.73 and 52.08.  Lago then went even faster in the day’s final event, posting a 100-Yard split time of 51.81 as the lead leg of UE’s 400-Yard Freestyle Relay squad which placed third overall.  Lago’s 50-Yard Freestyle time of 23.73 lowered her personal-best mark in the 50 Free, which ranks her the tenth-fastest female swimmer in the event in UE history.  Meanwhile, her 100-Yard split time of 51.81 ranks seventh-best all-time at UE.

Junior Daniel Santos Lopez (Madrid, Spain) helped UE sweep the 50 Free event, as he won the men’s event in a time of 20.69.  UE also swept the individual titles in the 200-Yard IM event, as junior Sveva Brugnoli (Rome, Italy) won the women’s event in a time of 2:06.87, while freshman Omar Ashraf Hassan (Doha, Qatar) won the men’s event with a time of 1:52.48, which cut over two seconds off his season-best time and ranks him as the seventh-fastest UE male in the event.

Hassan also moved into sixth-place on UE’s career top 10 in the men’s 200-Yard Butterfly, as he posted a time of 1:52.83 to place fourth overall.  Santos Lopez also lowered his personal-best time in the 100-Yard Freestyle, as he posted a 100 split time of 45.32 as the lead leg of UE’s 400-Yard Freestyle Relay team to cement his place as the fourth-fastest UE male in the event.

UE received podium finishes in both the men’s and women’s 100-Yard Butterfly, as Santos Lopez placed second with a time of 48.98 on the men’s side, while freshman Evelyn Chin (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia) finished third with a time of 57.11 on the women’s side.  Junior Mari Müller (Zurich, Switzerland) placed second in the women’s 200-Yard Breaststroke with a time of 2:23.80, while senior Jackson Caudill (Mount Sterling, Ky./Montgomery County) added a third-place finish in the men’s 1,000-Yard Freestyle with a time of 9:32.10 to round out UE’s individual podium finishes.  UE also placed third in the women’s 200-Yard Medley Relay and both the men’s and women’s 400-Yard Freestyle Relay events.

This weekend’s action concludes the regular-season portion of the schedules for UE.  The UE women will next return to action by hosting the MVC Championships at the Deaconess Aquatic Center in Evansville from February 21-24.  Tickets for the MVC Championships are now available on GoPurpleAces.com under the Tickets tab on the website.  The UE men, meanwhile, will travel to Carbondale, Illinois to take part in the Mid-American Conference Championships March 6-9.

Competing against traditional conference powers Missouri State and UIC on Friday night, the University of Evansville swimming and diving team had a strong showing, posting three individual victories and seven podium finishes at the Flames Natatorium in Chicago, Illinois.

Junior swimmer Daniel Santos Lopez (Madrid, Spain) won a pair of events on the evening, taking home the title in the 50-Yard Freestyle with a time of 20.74, before coming back two events later to cruise to a win in the 100-Yard Butterfly in a time of 49.07.  Senior Madison Rollett (Evansville, Ind./Reitz) continued her strong senior season as well, winning the women’s three-meter diving competition with a score of 265.50.

“With a month or so out from the conference championships, I think that both the men and women are showing some good signs in preparation for the big meet,” said UE swimming and diving head coach Stuart Wilson.  “We competed against two strong teams tonight, and it was good for the team to be pushed.

“With Dani winning both the 50 Free and 100 Fly, and Maddie winning the three-meter competition, both are looking prime to be one of the top finishers in the conference.”

Rollett opened the meet for UE by posting her second-best three-meter score ever to take the women’s competition with a mark of 265.50.  Fellow senior Jackson Caudill (Mount Sterling, Ky./Montgomery County) then followed shortly thereafter with a podium finish in the men’s 1,650-Yard Freestyle, placing second in a time of 15:55.47.  Freshman Joseph Capo (Luling, La./Jesuit) nearly joined Caudill on the podium, placing fourth in a time of 16:03.88.  During Capo’s 1,650 Free effort, he clocked in with a 1,000-Yard split time of 9:41.09, which is a season-best mark and solidified himself in third place on UE’s career chart.

Santos Lopez would follow two events later with his victory in the men’s 50-Yard Freestyle with a time of 20.74.  Sophomore Daniil Goncharuk (Kyiv, Ukraine) joined Santos Lopez on the podium in the 50 Free, placing third in a time of 20.93.

Freshman Omar Ashraf Hassan (Doha, Qatar) followed in the next event with a personal-best time of 4:04.59 in the 400-Yard IM to move up to the seventh-fastest male in UE history in the event.  Santos Lopez then followed in the next event with a victory in the 100-Yard Butterfly in a time of 49.07.

Freshman Michael Pruett (Nolensville, Tenn./Nolensville) continued the strong run of swims for UE in the next event – the men’s 100-Yard Freestyle – placing second in a time of 47.27.  Junior Jakob Grundbacher (Thalwil, Switzerland) was not far behind in fourth place, finishing in a time of 47.70.

Junior Mari Müller (Zurich, Switzerland) collected UE’s final podium finish of the evening with a third-place finish in the women’s 100-Yard Breaststroke with a time of 1:06.78.  UE also collected nine fourth-place finishes overall against Missouri State and UIC.  Missouri State is the preseason favorite and reigning Missouri Valley Conference champion on the women’s side, and placed second in the Mid-American Conference a year ago.

Evansville will not have long to rest, as the Purple Aces will be back in action again on Saturday, taking part in the UIC Invitational at the FMC Natatorium in Westmont, Illinois.  The meet will begin at 10:30 a.m.

A small group of runners from the University of Evansville track and field runners will compete in Kentucky on Saturday morning.

The Purple Aces will have seven runners competing on the second day of the PNC Lenny Lyles Invitational hosted by the Louisville Cardinals at the Norton Sports and Learning Center. UE will have two runners competing in the 400-meter race and the 5000-meter race while three runners are competing in the mile race. The entire Evansville team will be back in action on Friday, Feb. 2 at the PNC Bank Bellarmine Classic. 

At the Lenny Lyles Invitational, the Aces will compete against runners from 24 other schools across multiple divisions. No other Missouri Valley Conference schools are participating in the meet, but UE will still see some familiar faces in Purdue, Bellarmine, Louisville, Eastern Kentucky, Austin Peay, and Division II Vincennes. Evansville's day in Louisville will begin with the 400-meter races at 10:15 a.m. followed by the mile races and wrapping up with the 5000-meter races at 12:15 and 12:55 p.m. 

Last weekend at the Indiana Invitational, the Aces broke seven program records while having two podium finishes. Sprinters Raymond Felton III (Houston / Clear Brook HS) and Taylor Johnson (Evansville, Ind. / Reitz HS) placed second and third in the 200-meter sprint and the 400-meter race respectively with times of 21.89 and 57.80 seconds. Other program records broken last weekend included the men's and women's 600-meter race from Jakub Nowicki (Poznan, Poland) at 1:23.49 and Kalina Urbaniak (Suchy Las, Poland) at 1:36.95, the women's weight throw by Gwen Darrah (Cleveland, Ohio / Orange HS) at 13.50 meters, the men's shot put by Zach Dove (Princeton, Ind. / Princeton Community HS) with a throw of 15.53 meters and the men's 4x400 meter relay with a time of 3:22.79.
