Shepard Brass was founded in 1999 and is named after Wesley Shepard, past Director of Bands and Chair of the UE Department of Music. The brass quintet has performed at the Indiana Music Educators Association Conference, The International Trumpet Guild Conference, and most recently at the 2023 UE Brass Festival at Harlaxton College. In addition to giving both on and off campus recitals the ensemble performs frequently at area churches and community performance venues. Shepard Brass has commissioned works in their repertoire and they frequently feature percussion in their performances. The members include Timothy Zifer, UE trumpet professor emeritus, David Jarrett, UE music alumni and H&H Music employee, Rebecca Salo, principal horn of the Evansville Philharmonic and adjunct UE professor, Kenneth Steinsultz, UE professor of music teaching bands and low brass, and Patrick Stuckemeyer, professor of Music at Kentucky Wesleyan University teaching bands and low brass.

Their January 23 recital will feature works by Victor Ewald and Anthony Plog among others.

Admission for all events is free and open to the public.

Patchwork Central and the University of Evansville will be partnering to remove abandoned bicycles across campus in the coming weeks. These bikes will be restored and gifted to the community.

If you currently have a bike that is locked to a bike rack, please visit the Office of Residence Life to receive a bike tag. After receiving your tag, please secure it on your bike and lock it to a rack on campus.

During the week of Jan. 29th, Facilties and Patchwork will be removing bikes that do not have a tag.

Hello everybody! I am excited to announce that Total Fit is back! Total Fit is a fitness class that focuses on having a strong body, mind, and sprirt. This class is open to anyone and everyone regardless of your current fitness level. Please come wearing athletic clothes and shoes, and bring a water bottle! We will be meeting once a week every Wednesday morning in the Carson Center from 8:30-9:30 am, in the aerobic room (the room with all the mirrors).

Peer tutoring is a free service managed by Academic Services that is open to all current UE students. Each session is run by peer tutors who are familiar with the course material, having gone through it all themselves before. This is a great resource for if you have questions, want to refresh yourself on information, or even if you need a space that will help you focus on studying and other work.

Haven't attended tutoring before? Here are some fast facts and tips:

• Tutoring operates on a drop-in basis in which students can come and go from the tutoring session at any point in the posted time frame.
• Bring your course materials with you.
• Come up with specific questions so that the tutor knows how to best help you.
• Tutoring is not a replacement for asking your professor questions and seeking their help.
• Please be respectful of other students as well as of tutors.
• Sessions listed as “TBD” are still being decided and will be available as soon as possible.

On Tuesday, October 31, the Clay Club held its 21st Annual Chili Bowl Sale on the University of Evansville’s campus. There were over 500 handmade ceramic bowls for sale with the majority being sold for $10 and other from $15 to $100. In previous years the sale of the bowls lasted from 15 to 30 minutes. This year the bowls sold out in a record time of 6 minutes 30 seconds. People waited in line longer for chili than they waited to buy the bowls.

There were double the number of people this year. This one day event brings one of the largest crowds to campus. This event draws not only UE students, faculty, and staff but also the UE community and supporters. Professor Matteson states, “We have families that drive over 2 hours to be here. The sale is anticipated every year and has become a tradition for many.”

This year the UE Clay Club chose the Community Food Bank Inc. of Dubois County as its beneficiary. The UE Clay Club has a member that benefitted from the food bank in the past and wanted to give back and pay it forward from their experiences. The UE Clay Club decided to donate all of their profits this year to the Community Food Bank.

Since 2016, when the UE Clay Club became a Student Government Association sponsored group, they have been operating the Chili Bowl Sale as a Philanthropic Event and Fundraiser, donating close to $30,000 to fight hunger. Each year the UE Clay Club members have to research and decide which organization they want to support.

Professor Matteson has two requirements for the students as they choose where to donate: one, the organization needs to be mostly funded by private donors; two, they must spread the gifts to organizations inside and outside of Vanderburgh County. This is done on a rotating basis. Professor Matteson states, “We have a lot of students that also reside in the surrounding counties. These counties need our support too.” This furthers UE's commitment to fighting hunger within the greater community.

Harlaxton is accepting applications for Summer I, Summer II, and Fall 2024! Our priority deadline application for the summer terms is on January 30. Applications for the summer will be accepted on a space available basis after that date. If there's a specific course you want to take at Harlaxton this summer, get your application submitted by the priority deadline. Applications for the fall semester will be accepted until March 4.

Get Your W-2s and 1095Cs Earlier with Electronic Consent

The Office of Accounting/Payroll will be issuing W-2s for 2023 no later than January 31, 2024.  You may choose 1 of 2 options to receive your W-2:

• Electronic W-2 – If you provide your consent, you will be able to view/print in Self-Service as soon as they are ready.  Notification will be sent through AceNotes.
• Paper W-2 – If you prefer, you can continue to receive your W-2 in the mail.

An electronic W-2 will give you earlier access than a mailed copy.  It is IRS compliant and can be submitted with your tax return as usual.

To give consent for the electronic W-2, log in to Self-Service https://selfservice.evansville.edu and go to “Tax Information”.  Select “Receive my W-2 only in electronic form” and save.

If you are eligible to participate in the university’s health plans, you may give consent to receive your 1095-C form electronically here also.  If you choose to withhold your consent to view/print your online W-2 and 1095-C, a paper copy will be mailed to your home address.  Please make sure that your current address is on file.

The University of Evansville women’s basketball team struggled to contain Southern Illinois offense in a 99-60 loss on Sunday.

Freshman forward Neveah Thomas came two points shy of her career-high against the Salukis Sunday afternoon. Thomas and guard Kynidi Mason Striverson were the only two Purple Aces in double digits on offense while forward Maggie Hartwig pulled down 10 rebounds. UE had its second-best Missouri Valley Conference game blocking shots with five put-downs.

The Aces got off to an early start as forward Nevaeh Thomas had the first points of the game 40 seconds in. But it would take three more minutes for UE to add a point at the line going down by double-digits with 2:10 left in the first quarter. A corner three from guard Alana Striverson put Evansville into double-digits before the end of the first quarter.

It was a much slower start on offense in the second quarter as Mason Striverson had the Aces first basket over two and a half minutes into the quarter. The bucket spurred a shot-for-shot stretch between the two teams. But three straight threes in a row for the Salukis stopped UE’s offense in its tracks. Evansville’s guards got the team back on track as Thomas ended the half with two made free throws to make it a 49-24 game.

The Aces opened scoring in the second half as well with Hartwig making a second-chance layup. But SIU rattled off six points before Hartwig could make another layup. The teams traded shots until under five minutes to go. UE then had its best scoring run starting with another Striverson three culminating in six points. Two fast runs from the Salukis had Evansville facing a 35-point deficit heading into the final quarter.

Back-to-back layups began the fourth quarter for the Aces, but it soon returned to a shot-for-shot game. Southern Illinois was able to put together three short runs in the quarter to keep UE from getting anywhere close. Evansville ended its scoring on a Mason Striverson three and didn’t make a basket for the final two and a half minutes for the 99-60 loss.

The Aces return home to Meeks Family Fieldhouse next week for a pair of games. UE will welcome UIC to town first on Friday Jan. 26 for the team’s annual Pride game. Tip-off from Meeks is set for 6 p.m. on Friday.

The University of Evansville women’s basketball team couldn’t find its rhythm in a 90-55 loss to the Missouri State Lady Bears.

The Purple Aces freshman forwards led the offense in their first visit to Springfield. Maggie Hartwig had a team-high 23 points while Nevaeh Thomas added 12 for Evansville’s only double-digit scorers. UE struggled early in Missouri with its lowest scoring first half but rebounded in the second with 39 points.

Evansville’s offense struggled to get going early at Great Southern Bank Arena. The Aces’ first basket came shortly after the five-minute mark as Thomas made two free throws. The freshman forward had all six of UE’s first quarter points while shooting 66% from the floor. After only 10 minutes Evansville faced a 16-point deficit in their second lowest-scoring quarter.

The Aces fared better in the second quarter by getting into double-digits early. UE’s offense ran through the post as Thomas and Hartwig combined for six of Evansville’s 10 points in the second frame. Guard Kynidi Mason Striverson grabbed the last bucket of the first half for the Aces to make it a 43-16 game after 20 minutes.

UE had a faster start to the second half, going point for point with the Lady Bears in the first three minutes. The hot early stretch included Evansville’s first three of the game from Hartwig. The Aces cut into Missouri State’s offensive pace throughout the third, including a brief five-point run halfway through. Hartwig made an open three with nine seconds left on the clock to make it 69-37. But a last-second foul had UE down by 33 going into the final 10 minutes.

 It was a back-and-forth game in the last quarter as both teams focused on playing their benches. The Lady Bears had a nine-point run with six minutes on the clock to end the matching shots. Guard Alana Striverson ended the run with a wide-open three, spurring a 10-4 stretch. The Aces ended the game with four straight points in the 90-55 defeat.

While forwards led UE on offense, it was an even game on defense as Thomas and forward Tameshia Dozier collected six boards. Guard Julia Palomo had a team-high two steals while freshman guard Sydney Bradley recorded her first collegiate blocks with two against Missouri State.

Evansville remains on the road with a Sunday afternoon game in Carbondale, Ill. The Aces will take on the Salukis at the Banterra Center at 2 p.m. on Jan. 21.

Drake opened the night connecting on 10 of their first 11 field goal attempts and would pull away to take a 98-47 win over the University of Evansville men’s basketball team on Saturday night at the Knapp Center.

Yacine Toumi was Evansville’s top scorer with 13 points while Antonio Thomas had 10 and Josh Hughes finished the night with eight.  Five Bulldogs reached double figures with Kyron Gibson and Darnell Brodie scoring 18 apiece.  Brodie added a game-high 10 rebounds.

Making his first collegiate start, Chuck Bailey III kept the Purple Aces right in the mix in the opening moments, giving UE a 4-2 lead.  After four in a row by the Bulldogs, Bailey converted once again to tie the game at 6-6.  That is the point where Drake took control, scoring 12 in a row to cap an 8-for-9 start from the field.  The early lights out shooting continued for the Bulldogs as 10 of their opening 11 attempts found the bottom of the net, giving them a 23-8 lead.

Evansville switched to a zone defense, temporarily causing some issues for the Bulldogs.  Yacine Toumi knocked down a triple to cut the deficit to 12 (23-11) as the period moved past the midway point before Drake countered with another 3-pointer on the ensuing possession.  That triple was the first of 20 in a row by the Bulldogs as they went up 43-11 at the 5:27 mark.  Following a Josh Hughes layup, Drake added five more to take their largest lead of the half at 48-13.  At the break, UE trailed by a 54-20 margin as DU shot 75.9% in the opening stanza.

Toumi scored UE’s first six points of the second half as the squad got back within 30 points at 58-28.  With 11:37 remaining, Drake capped a 13-3 stretch that pushed their advantage to 40 points.  As the minutes wound down, the Bulldogs finished the evening with the 97-48 victory.

For the night, DU shot 63.9% from the field and 44.4% from long range.  Evansville finished at 35.6% while shooting 18.2% from 3-point range.

UE remains in Iowa as they prepare for Tuesday evening’s contest at UNI.  Tip will be at 7 p.m. at the McLeod Center.

The University of Evansville swimming and diving team swept a double dual meet with Eastern Illinois and Wabash College on Saturday, as the Purple Aces’ swimmers won 20 of 22 total events on the afternoon at EIU’s Padovan Pool in Charleston, Illinois.

The UE men swept the Panthers and Little Giants by scores of 157-41 and 163-42, while the UE women knocked off EIU, 114-81.  UE junior swimmer Daniel Santos Lopez (Madrid, Spain) helped lead the charge by dominating the field in his three events on Saturday, including setting a Padovan Pool record in the men’s 200-Yard IM event.

Santos Lopez teamed with juniors Patrik Vilbergsson (Kopavogur, Iceland) and Benjamin Hasanovic (Innsbruck, Austria) and sophomore Daniil Goncharuk (Kyiv, Ukraine) to post an impressive victory in the men’s opening event of the day – the 200-Yard Medley Relay – as the UE quartet won by over two full seconds.  Santos Lopez then pulled off an impressive double-victory in consecutive events, breaking the Padovan Pool record in the 200 IM with a time of 1:54.83 to win by over five full seconds, before coming back just minutes later to win the men’s 100-Yard Butterfly by over two and a half seconds with a winning time of 50.97.

On the men’s side, Evansville won all 11 events against EIU and Wabash.  Along with Santos Lopez, senior Jackson Caudill (Mt. Sterling, Ky./Montgomery County) posted multiple victories on the day, winning both the 1,000-Yard Freestyle (9:47.07) and the 500-Yard Freestyle (4:46.22).  Vilbergsson cruised to a victory in the 100-Yard Backstroke (51.72).  Meanwhile, Goncharuk won the 50-Yard Freestyle (21.43), while Hasanovic was victorious in the 100-Yard Freestyle (47.80).  Freshman Joseph Capo (Luling, La./Jesuit) also placed first in the 200-Yard Freestyle (1:44.71), while junior Carlos Souto (A Coruna, Spain) won the 100-Yard Breaststroke.

On the women’s side, the Purple Aces won nine of the 11 events.  Freshman Luana Carrotta (Ercolano, Italy) posted a pair of victories for UE, winning both the 200-Yard Freestyle (2:02.25) and the 500-Yard Freestyle (5:24.73).  Fellow freshman Hannah Krings (Madison, Ala./Westminster Christian Academy) took home the title in the 1,000-Yard Freestyle (11:17.82), while freshman Rebecca Lago (Tezze sul Brenta, Italy) and sophomore Mia Pesavento (Enola, Pa./Cumberland Valley) placed first and second in the 100-Yard Freestyle with times of 54.58 and 56.12, respectively.

Junior Sveva Brugnoli (Rome, Italy) placed first in the 200-Yard IM with a time of 2:12.50, before placing second behind freshman Evelyn Chin (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia) just minutes later in the 100-Yard Butterfly, as Chin came in at 58.91 and Brugnoli finished with a time of 59.13.  Freshman Ane Madina Garate (Onati, Spain) also captured the title in the 100-Yard Backstroke (1:00.25), while junior Mari Mueller (Zurich, Switzerland) edged teammate Rafaela Makariewicz (Porto Alegre, Brazil) by 0.3 seconds to win the 100-Yard Breaststroke with a time of 1:07.41.

Evansville will have a short week of practice this week before returning to action again on Friday, as UE will travel north to Chicago, Illinois for two days of competition.  Evansville will face UIC and Missouri State in a double-dual meet on Friday, before taking part in the UIC Invitational next Saturday.

The University of Evansville track and field team wrapped up its time at the Indiana Invitational with another podium finish and three more broken program records.

Sprinter Taylor Johnson (Evansville, Ind. / Reitz HS) broke her previous 400-meter record for the Purple Aces second podium finish of the weekend. Johnson placed third in the event while running a 57.80 while teammate Eilen Brenne (Skein, Norway) placed 13th with a time of 1:01.19. Along with another podium placement, UE set new program records in two other events.

Graduate thrower Zach Dove (Princeton, Ind. / Princeton Community HS) topped Evansville's record in the men's shot put with a throw of 15.53 meters for a seventh-place finish. Dove now holds both the indoor shot put and weight throw program records after Saturday's performance. The Aces other new program record came in the men's 4x400-meter relay as the team of Austin Liversgowdy (Florence, Ky. / Cooper HS), Raymond Felton III (Houston / Clear Brook HS), Jose Ocampo (Monterrey, Nuevo León, Mexico), and Alvaro Monfort (Castile Y Leon, Spain) ran a 3:22.79 for a fifth place finish.

The women's 4x400-meter relay team came just two seconds shy of their program best last weekend, running a 4:03.58 for an eighth-place finish. Also on the track, UE had three runners compete in the men's 400-meter race all finishing within three spots of each other. Liversgowdy had the best finish at ninth by running a 51.16 and was closely followed by Ocampo with a season-best 51.90 run while Jakub Nowick (Poznan, Poland) ended in 11th with a 52.00 run. 

Mid-distance runners for Evansville also had a good day with two top 10 finishes in the women's 800-meter race and two top 15 finishes on the men's side. Nayla Martin (Vaudreuil-Dorion, Quebec, Canada) placed eighth with a time of 2:18.24 while Kalina Urbaniak (Suchy Las, Poland) finished right behind her in ninth with a time of 2:16.68. In the men's 800-meter race Monfort and Adam Oulgout (St. Paul, Minn. / Central HS) ran identical times of 1:56.488 to tie for 14th. Tommaso Losma (Lombardia, Italy) also finished the 800-meter with a time of 2:02.11.

The Aces finished their day on the track with the 3000-meter events as Sonja Inzinger (Mautern an der Donau, Austria) had the highest placement at fifth with a time of 9:58.82. Graduate distance runner Sarah Vanderhoof-Dossett (Franklin, Tenn. / Independence HS) finished the event in 16th with a time of 10:37.46. On the men's side Samuel Lea (Worchester, England) placed 10th with a time of 8:32.08 while Rafael Rodriguez and Owen Cuplin finished with times of 8:35.78 and 9:09.75 respectively. 

UE's throwers fared well on Saturday along with Dove's new program record. Jaden Hayes (Huntingburg, Ind. / Southridge HS) had a season-best in the shot put with a throw of 14.19 meters. In the women's shot put Brooke Springer threw 9.39 meters while freshman Jillian Miller made her throwing debut at 8.07 meters.

Evansville will have the next week off to fine-tune its performances before the team's next meet. The Aces will compete again on Friday, Feb. 2 at the PNC Bank Bellarmine Classic in Louisville.

The University of Evansville swimming and diving team will return to action on Saturday afternoon, when the Purple Aces travel to Charleston, Illinois to take on the Eastern Illinois Panthers.  The UE men will also battle the Wabash College swimming and diving team in a triangular meet with EIU.  The meet will begin at 1 p.m.

The swimming team returned to the pool last Saturday at Bellarmine in UE’s first competition since early November.  The Purple Aces swept all four relay races, and the UE men won three individual titles from senior Jackson Caudill (Mt. Sterling, Ky./Montgomery County) and juniors Daniel Santos Lopez (Madrid, Spain) and Patrik Vilbergsson (Kopavogur, Iceland), while freshman Rebecca Lago (Tezze sul Brenta, Italy) won the women’s 50-Yard Freestyle event.

Diving-wise, Evansville returned to action in a big way, as both senior Madison Rollett (Evansville, Ind./Reitz) and sophomore Levi McKinney (Boonville, Ind./Boonville) posted NCAA Zone Qualifying scores on the one-meter board.  Both Rollett and McKinney earned conference Diver of the Week honors this week, and both will look to build on their start to the championship season on Saturday.
