2015 Reaccreditation:  Approaches to the Quality Initiative – Brian Ernsting

The Higher Learning Commission (HLC) is the regional accreditor with responsibility for the accreditation of the university.   Beginning in the 2015-2016 academic year,  the HLC will separate the accreditation process into two components:  the Assurance Review and the Quality Initiative.  While the Assurance Review is similar in many ways to previous accreditation reviews, the Quality Initiative represents a new kind of activity for UE, designed to focus on institutional innovation and improvement.  In the coming weeks and months, we will need to decide on the direction of our Quality Initiative.  This session will introduce the scope of the Quality Initiative and solicit suggestions about how the university community might select  a Quality Initiative that leads to meaningful improvement.

With full implementation of the new Enduring Foundations General Education program set for fall of 2013, the deadlines for overlay component designation proposals are right around the corner. For faculty members interested in the Social Responsibility Overlay Component, this session will provide specific information about component requirements, ways to implement service learning elements into courses, and what community resources are available when writing that new course objective. Special guest, Dr. Ann Statham, Director of Service Learning from the University of Southern Indiana will participate.

ARTstor Digital Library provides a rich treasure of more than one million images in direct support of teaching, learning, and research at UE.  ARTstor is UE Libraries’ newest  digital resource.  ARTstor collaborates with museums, archival centers, photographers, and stock photography agencies across the world to offer a rapidly expanding image collection pertinent to every College at UE.  ARTstor provides software tools to search the image collection, and to share selected images online and offline for teaching and for your research. The UE Center for Intensive Experiential Education:  A Multidisciplinary Student Experiential Initiative

After a twelve-month period of discovery and development, scale-up plans are in the works for the University's new high-intensity, cross-disciplinary experiential learning immersion program. The purpose of the initiative is to immerse students into professional practice one or more times during their pursuit of a UE undergraduate degree. These unique, short-run experiential learning opportunities will couple just-in-time learning with profession-grade outcomes. Rick Deer will facilitate a panel with Phil Gerhart, Steve Standifird, James Doane, and students Amanda Weisman and Shawn Mayo. Come and see how you and your students can become involved.

LiveText ePortfolio Software: Managing Assessment Evidence – Brian Ernsting and Amy Brandebury

As we begin to collect increasing amounts of evidence and data to support our assessment of student learning outcomes, the management of these materials becomes a significant activity.  The university has adopted the LiveText platform to assist faculty and administrators in gathering, analyzing, and reporting assessment materials.  The LiveText software will be used by first-year students in 2012-2013, with a campus-wide implementation in 2013-2014.  This session will introduce the software, explain the current state of implementation, and outline resources available for the training and support of faculty and students during the implementation period.
