The University of Evansville Bass Fishing Club competed in their second tournament of the season at Mills Creek, Illinois this past weekend. The one day tournament was hosted by the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign and was a short, one day tournament. Nick Uebelhor and Eric Kieffner performed well in their first tournament taking 15th place out of 40 teams at Kentucky Lake in an FLW College Fishing Series event. The Mills Creek event put on by the Midwest Collegiate Fishing Series was an intense day of activity for the UE anglers. Unlike the FLW College Fishing Series, the Mills Creek Tournament only allowed for 2 keepers over 15 inches and 4 keepers that had to be under 12 inches as opposed to the usual 5-6 keepers over 15 inches. Uebelhor and Kieffner had just hours to reel in their best fish of the day. The day started quickly for Uebelhor and Kieffner as they quickly caught there limit of fish by 8:00 in the morning. This gave the UE anglers the opportunity to replace their early morning catches with bigger fish, increasing their total catch weight. Uebelhor and Kieffner continued to replace fish all day eventually landing their total at 6.94 pounds which landed them in 3rd place overall.
The UE anglers are new to the college fishing circuit, but that has not stopped them from taking on the competition in the tough Midwest region that includes fishing hotbeds of Kentucky, Tennessee, Southern Indiana, Arkansas, Missouri, and Southern Illinois. Because of their excellent performance at Mills Creek, the team as earned an invitation to the Midwest Collegiate Fishing Series Classic to take place in the fall, most likely October according to Uebelhor. We will have more information on the Midwest Collegiate Fishing Series Classic as it becomes available. Tournament results are available at www.collegiatebasschampionship.com.
