A contractor will conduct the required annual fire alarm testing throughout the next few weeks. The contractor will avoid fire alarm testing during SOAR events and other scheduled camps and events in Eykamp and Neu Chapel. Testing will begin on Monday, July 10 through Friday, July 28. The testing may cause intermittent noise, and non-toxic odors. Please use caution near contractors, equipment, and activity.

UE has announced the appointment of Dr. Charles "Toby" Ziglar as the new Director of Graduate Enrollment at the University of Evansville (UE). Following a nationwide search, Dr. Ziglar emerged as the ideal candidate for this crucial role.

In his capacity as the Director of Graduate Enrollment, Dr. Ziglar will establish and lead the Office of Graduate Programs, which will shape and guide the future trajectory of UE's Graduate studies within our community and beyond.

Dr. Ziglar holds a PhD in New Testament Studies from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, an EdD in Higher Education Leadership from Georgia Southern University, a Master of Divinity from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, and a BA in Religion from Samford University.

Dr. Ziglar brings with him a wealth of experience in higher education, spanning over two decades. Throughout his career, he has demonstrated exceptional administrative leadership, strategic planning, programmatic growth, budgetary oversight, student services, and policy development, all of which have proven instrumental in elevating enrollment and enhancing student retention. Notably, Dr. Ziglar has held significant positions such as Dean of the Graduate School and Director of Graduate and International Admissions at the University of West Georgia, GA; Vice President for Enrollment Management at Bluefield College, VA; Assistant Director of Graduate Admissions at Kennesaw State University, GA, Director of Admissions in the School of Divinity at Gardner-Webb University, NC; and Coordinator for Graduate Recruitment at Georgia Southern University, GA.

Dr. Ziglar’s leadership will provide tremendous support to faculty and administrators in all our graduate programs. His vast experience and numerous talents will help us to identify new opportunities and bolster our growth in graduate studies at UE.

Lynn Falcony of Newburgh has joined the Diocese of Evansville staff as campus minister at the University of Evansville. She fills a vacancy created by the departure of Sister of Providence Jessica Vitente, who left to pursue educational opportunities outside the diocese.

Lynn is a 2005 graduate of Reitz Memorial High School, and she earned an undergraduate degree in psychology from the University of Indiana East. Lynn spent time in discernment and formation with the Sisters of St. Benedict of Ferdinand, and she has been active in diocesan ministries - including Teens Encounter Christ, Cursillo, and Source + Summit.

Diocesan Director of Youth and Young Adult Ministry Jeremy Goebel said, "I am grateful and excited to welcome Lynn as our new campus minister at the University of Evansville. Her passion for her Catholic faith is evident and contagious. Please join me in praying for Lynn and the students and staff that she will serve on the UE campus."

Lynn said, "Over the years, so many individuals in our diocese have generously shared God’s love with me and created a safe space to grow. I am most excited about creating that space for students - where they may encounter Christ’s love in a personal way, explore their gifts and grow in our faith, while also providing them with opportunities to share the love of Christ with others in our community."

Lynn joins the staff from Southwestern Behavioral Healthcare, where she served as a skills-development specialist and as a member of the crisis management team. She also completed a research internship with Youth First in Evansville.

Lynn also served as a certified pharmacy technician at St. Mary Medical Center in Evansville, now Ascension St. Vincent Hospital.

If you plan on renting any books, you will need to put in a credit card to secure the rental BUT you can pay a different way! Need to use your Book Loan before your Financial Aid is distributed? Have VA benefits? You can do use these AND rent! When it comes time to check out, make sure you follow the directions, putting in your credit card AND selecting the secondary form of payment as "Financial Aid: Student Account". When the order comes through, the appropriate account will be charged (nothing will be charged to the credit card unless you damage the books or don't bring them back at the end of the semester).

Please allow up to 72 hours for web order processing during the first 2 weeks of class. You will receive 2 emails: one confirming the order, the other letting you know when it is ready to pickup/has been shipped. Please wait for that second email before coming in to pick up your order. If you have decided to have your books shipped, the tracking number will be in that email. Of course, if you don't feel comfortable ordering online, you're more than welcome to bring your schedule into the store (either printed or pulled up on your phone), we will pull your books at our back counter, and you can pay at the register. Congratulations to Senior Associate Director of Admission Catie Taylor on recently being honored and selected as a winner of Evansville Rotary's 20 Under 40. The entire UE family is sending our congratulations to Catie!

Alejandro Malla, a junior computer science student from the School of Engineering and Computer Science and Dr. Pallav Bera, Assistant Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering published a conference paper titled, “Artificial Neural Network with Dropout and Batch Normalization Applied on Diabetic Patient Data", at the 3rd International Conference on Electrical, Computer, Communications and Mechatronics Engineering (ICECCME). This conference was organized in a hybrid mode in Spain (July 19-21, 2023). Alejandro presented this paper as the lead author. This conference is the premier event that brings together industry professionals, academics, and engineers to exchange information and ideas on electrical, computer, communications, and mechatronic engineering.

In this paper, the authors examined a data set of diabetic patients for diabetes detection. An Artificial Neural Network (ANN) was designed with several regularization methods to prevent over-fitting. The benefits of combining dropout layers with batch normalization layers were justified using the Central Limit Theorem in this paper. Congratulations to Alejandro and Dr. Bera!

University of Evansville President Christopher M. Pietruszkiewicz has been named to the IBJ Media Indiana 250 list for the first time. The list includes 250 of the most influential executives across the state in an array of economic sectors.

During the nomination process, IBJ Media, which includes Indianapolis Business Journal (IBJ), Inside INdiana Business, and Indiana Lawyer, sought out individuals from across the state who have the most significant impact on Indiana's economy and its people. Through an extensive assessment, the organizations determined the distinguished group known as the "Indiana 250 class" for this year.

“I am honored to be selected as part of the Indiana 250 class by IBJ Media,” said President Pietruszkiewicz. “I am particularly grateful for the supportive campus community in helping demonstrate each and every day the impact that we have on our students, our community, and our State. We challenge ourselves daily to serve responsibility and live meaningfully in a changing world and this honor is reflective of the good work UE does to make a difference in the lives of our fellow Hoosiers.”

IBJ Media published full profiles of the honorees in their magazine published in the July 21 issue of the Indiana Business Journal and is available online at Indiana250.com.

“Our 2023 Indiana 250 list is chock full of private- and public-sector leaders who are making big impacts in their communities, in our state and even in our nation,” said IBJ Media CEO Nate Feltman. “We chose these leaders because they are doing inspiring work, and we want to share their stories so others can be inspired, too.”

Dr. Kenneth Steinsultz, Director of Bands was conductor for the Quincy Park Band's 75th Anniversary concert in Quincy, Illinois on Sunday, July 9. In addition to conducting, Dr. Steinsultz was part of a featured euphonium duet with MGySgt (retired)Phil Franke, former principal euphonium in "The President's Own" United States Marine Band.

Walayet A. Khan, Professor of Finance, published a coauthored paper titled, “An empirical Study on the relationship between credit ratings and banks’ performance: Evidence from an emerging market.” In the recent edition of International Journal of Accounting & Business Finance.

Professor Khan also coauthored a book, “Black gold´s price plunge: Are conventional and interest free Islamic banks equally vulnerable?”  ISBN: 978-999949-8-310-0, 2022, Eliva Press.

The Council for British Archaeology in partnership with the Marsh Charitable Trust has named Digging Harlaxton in the Top 3 for the Marsh Community Archaeology Awards.
Digging Harlaxton was a month-long field school with a commitment to being a truly inclusive program. Developed by Harlaxton College in 2022 and involving participants from the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom, it focused on developing and enhancing the methodological and practical field skills of participants through excavation of Harlaxton Manor while being actively tailored to accommodate any range of physical requirements and support mental health needs.

Digging Harlaxton is in the top 3 for Community Projects of the Year for a Marsh Community Archaeology Award.

Over the course of the 2022-23 school year, University of Evansville student-athletes compiled 3.492 grade point average, marking the highest in department history.

“This is such a great achievement by our student-athletes and is a testament to the importance of academics at the University of Evansville,” UE Athletics Director Ziggy Siegfried stated. “I am extremely proud of our student-athletes for the work that they put in to achieve this. It took contributions from everyone to make this happen!”

Making the effort even more impressive was the face that each of the Purple Aces athletic programs achieved a GPA above a 3.0. Eight UE teams completed the academic year with GPA’s over a 3.50. Women’s cross country led the way with a 3.838 GPA while women’s track and field and women’s soccer finished at 3.754 and 3.714, respectively. Softball (3.638), men’s cross country (3.635), women’s golf (3.622), women’s swimming and diving (3.540) and men’s track and field (3.507) also finished above a 3.50.

“We are very proud of the continued commitment to academic excellence by our student-athletes. Our coaches recruit talented individuals who seek to be successful in the classroom in addition to their respective sports,” UE Deputy AD for Internal Operations/SWA Sarah Solinsky said. “The University of Evansville has faculty who play a key role in assisting our student-athletes when they miss class for team travel, have to reschedule exams, or meet outside of regular class time. This record GPA is a testament to the ongoing efforts by many campus offices to provide the best student-athlete experience at the University of Evansville.”

Multiple programs and student-athletes have been recognized for their academic achievements over the last year while other sports announcements are set for the coming days and weeks. Academic awards that have been announced are included below.

The University of Evansville Men’s Basketball program is currently searching for students who are interested in joining the program as student managers for the 2023-2024 academic year. Any full-time UE student, undergraduate or graduate, is welcome to apply. A good attitude and a strong work ethic are required.

Students interested in a manager position must be available for both practices and games. Practice is typically held in the afternoon during the week, as well as often on weekends. Managers should also be available to help with small group workouts during the fall and spring, in addition to accomplishing other tasks as needed.

Managers will get the opportunity to work at the Division 1 level and in the Missouri Valley Conference, of the nation's premier mid-major conferences. Managers will also get hands-on experience in collegiate athletics working with coaches, players, support staff, and administration. This position offers real-world experience for any student who is interested in pursuing a career in sports administration, coaching, or a related field. Lastly, managers will experience an exciting, family-oriented environment that will positively impact their college experience.

In addition, managers will receive authentic team Nike Gear, and an opportunity to work their way up to travelling to away competition.

Following the unfortunate cancellation of the 2023 Las Vegas Holiday Classic, the University of Evansville men’s basketball team has altered its non-conference slate while entering a new multi-team event.

UE was originally slated to play in the Las Vegas Holiday Classic in November, however. Organizers recently notified the Aces that due to unforeseen circumstances, the tournament was cancelled and will not take place.

Evansville will travel to Chattanooga, Tenn. to take part in a two-game MTE from November 24-25.  The Purple Aces will face Chattanooga on November 24 while taking on Southeast Missouri State on the 25th.  Further details, including game times, will be announced at a later date.

Head Coach Robyn Scherr-Wells has announced the final addition to her staff for the 2023-24 season with the hiring of Van Klohmann. Klohmann joins Evansville’s staff on 7/20/2023.

“I am thrilled to add Van to our coaching staff!” says Head Coach Robyn Sherr-Wells. “He brings excellent experience to our program having had both operations experience and coaching experience at Missouri S&T. He is a high character person with a fantastic work ethic, and I am excited for him to be a part of advancing Evansville Women’s Basketball forward.

Van will carry a lot of responsibility for daily operations with our program. However, with the new NCAA rule for the number of coaches allowed on the floor, Van will have coaching and scouting responsibilities as well in this newly expanded role”.

Klohmann has spent the past four years at Missouri University of Science and Technology in a variety of roles. Most recently Klohmann spent the past three seasons as an Assistant Coach for the Miners women’s basketball team. As an assistant, Klohmann handled operations tasks for Missouri S&T including scheduling, fundraising, scouting, and budgeting. On the floor, Klohmann helped the Miners' forwards and centers development and was the team’s defensive coordinator. Klohmann also helped the Miners to their first winning season in a decade in 2022-23, ending the year with a 15-14 record.

“It’s an honor to be a Purple Ace and work with Coach Robyn Scherr-Wells and the Women’s Basketball Program,” says Klohmann. “This is an excellent University, and I am excited to get involved around campus and in the community!”

Klohmann also spent time as an athletic attendant and an assistant coach with the men’s program while at Missouri S&T. Prior to his time in Rolla, Klohmann was a graduate assistant with the men’s basketball program at NAIA William Woods University and was an assistant coach at NCAA DIII Westminster College.

Kholmann is a 2017 graduate of the University of Missouri with a degree in secondary education. He also earned a master's degree in athletic administration in 2019 from William Woods University. Klohmann is a St. Louis native.

On Thursday, the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) announced the recipients of the 2022-23 NABC Team Academic Excellence Awards and NABC Honors Court, representing outstanding achievement in the classroom by men’s college basketball teams and student-athletes.

The NABC Team Academic Excellence Awards recognize men’s basketball programs that completed the 2022-23 academic year with a team GPA of 3.0 or higher. The NABC Honors Court, meanwhile, includes junior, senior and graduate student men’s basketball players who finished the 2022-23 year with a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher.

Completing the 2022-23 academic year with a 3.073 GPA, the Purple Aces earned the NABC Team Academic Excellence Award.  Nine players from the squad wrapped up the year with a GPA above a 3.0.

“At the University of Evansville, we take great pride in providing a quality education to all our students.  Within our program, we want student athletes who compete in the classroom just like we expect them to compete on the basketball floor,” UE head men’s basketball coach David Ragland said.  “Our goal is to win championships on and off the court.  In order to win championships, you have to have championship people.  Championship people have great habits and push to be the best version of themselves daily in all aspects of life.”

Four UE student-athletes earned a spot on the NABC Honors Court with Antoine Smith Jr., Kenny Strawbridge Jr., Blaise Beauchamp and Marvin Coleman III earning the recognition.

“We want to congratulate Antoine, Blaise, Kenny and Marvin for their academic accomplishments,” Ragland added.  “We are extremely proud of the hard work our student athletes put into the classroom this past year.”
