First created by a UE alumnus, “Pep and Vim,” UE’s Annual Day of Giving, was brought to life in 2012. We shouted our school spirit from the rooftops, and we were honored that the Aces community responded to our first Pep and Vim by making 250 philanthropic gifts that totaled over $5,000.

Flash forward to April 2022, Pep and Vim’s 10-year anniversary, and you can see how UE’s Day of Giving has grown over the last decade. Over 2,000 gifts were made to the university, totaling over $400,000. Gifts came in from 44 states, providing opportunities for growth within all 3 academic colleges on campus, as well as for Harlaxton College and UE Athletics.

Reimagining Financial Inclusion in the Post COVID-19 World: The Case for Grameen America

Associate Professor of Accounting and Mead Johnson Nutrition Endowed Chair in Business

Dr. Mousa identified and analyzed the key initiatives implemented by Grameen America in alleviating the financial hardships of its underserved female members, thereby contributing to the attainment of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. Her paper has been published in the International Journal of Ethics and Systems. Dr. Mousa, a recipient of the 2022-2023 Global Scholar Award, presented her research at the Sustainable and Socially Responsible Finance Conference held at the Yunus Social Business Center in the University of Bologna in Italy.

A Managerial Perspective on Underbanked Entrepreneurs: Barriers to Lending and Community Partnership Solutions

The unique barriers confronting entrepreneurs in low-income communities in obtaining debt capital in the United States remain unclear. The authors identify two sets of barriers to financial lending and present community-based partnership solutions to improve access to capital for underbanked entrepreneurs. Their research was published in the Journal of Economics and Finance Education.

Barn Blitz is an event where UE students team up with the local Habitat chapter to build yard barns for community members who have received Habitat homes.

This year’s Barn Blitz will take place on April 22nd at 9:00am in the parking lot behind the Evansville Habitat for Humanity (560 E Diamond Ave. Evansville, IN). Our goal is to have 20 teams, each made up of 6-8 people, so that we can build 20 barns.

STAT 300 / ChangeLab 300 - Data Analysis in the Real World

Do you want to challenge yourself in data analytics ChangeLab by working on a real-world project?
If so, join us at the ChangeLab in Fall 2023. We will have enough tasks if you have elementary, intermediate, or
advanced data analytics skills. You will work on the project in a team supervised by a coach. Your project management,
teamwork, professional interaction, and presentation skills will be developed.

The LEAD Forward program invites students to apply for the 2023-2024 LEAD Fellows cohort! LEAD Forward is an executive-style leadership skills development program. Students learn and grow through an intense retreat in August, monthly meetings with local community and business leaders, and one-on-one coaching. Students will receive an individualized leadership development plan that will guide their training throughout the program. We will also have lots of fun as we work as a team to improve our leadership, teamwork, and communication skills. We are looking for student leaders (current Freshmen, Sophomores, and Juniors) who are passionate about leadership! We welcome students of all majors as we believe leadership grows stronger through interdisciplinary ideas and fellowship. LEAD Forward is designed to be a year-long program, with participants committed to attend all scheduled meetings. However, we recognize that some of our top student leaders are also planning to study abroad, complete full-time internships, etc. and so we are happy to work with students to develop an individualized semester-long program or other alternative schedules. If you would like to contribute to tearing down walls and building bridges, and if you have studied Spanish in high school or college or are a native speaker, please consider signing up for CHNG-310-S02 Latino Community Outreach. We run different projects within the ChangeLab to meet the needs of the Latino community as they arise. Our two areas of focus are healthcare and education. The common themes of all our projects are appreciation of diversity, inclusivity and respect, multicultural understanding, and the correction of stereotypes.

Family, friends and loved ones of the late Dr. Marvin E. Hartig are pleased to announce the application process for the Dr. Marvin E. Hartig Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship is dedicated to the loving memory of Dr. Hartig, Dean of Evansville College’s Evening College in 1967, and administrator for the Center for Advanced Study, director of the Evansville chapter of the American Institute of Banking (AIB), and the international student advisor. In 1974, Dr. Hartig was appointed Dean of Academic Services. He retired in 1984 after serving his alma mater for thirty-five years and passed away in 2007.

This scholarship will be awarded annually to a deserving sophomore student. Preference will be given to a student working while being enrolled as a full-time student. International students are encouraged to apply.
Eligible students for the 2023-2024 Hartig Memorial Scholarship will be sophomores in the 2023-2024 academic year.

On April 10, ten student teams will be competing in the STARTedUP Foundation’s Innovate WithIN program Region 1 competition hosted by the University of Evansville. Students will present their pitches in front of an audience comprising government officials, business leaders, educators, and family members. Not only will these students receive great exposure, but they are also competing for a first-place prize of $25,000 in venture capital funding. Each team will also have the opportunity to enter an exclusive alumni program, receive thousands of dollars in scholarships, and are invited to travel to Washington D.C. over the summer.

UE students seeking financial aid or intending to use loan funds for summer courses at UE, please complete a Summer Financial Aid Application and return to the Office of Student Financial Services (Olmsted 105) however is most convenient. The application will allow our office to assess your financial aid and loan eligibility.

Work-Study:

On-campus jobs are available for continuing UE students during the summer. You do not need to be eligible for need-based Federal Work-Study during the academic year in order to apply. You may also apply regardless of your enrollment in summer courses. Applications will be available within the Student Employment area of WebAdvisor.

Associate Professor of Sociology, Dr. Mari Plikuhn, and 4 outstanding alumnae, Ayrlia Welch (SOC '19), Elizabeth Long (SOC/PSYC '15), Sarah Akins (SOC '14), and Chelsea Clifton (SOC '14) published their article "Bridging the Gap: Young Adults Perceptions of Aging" in the peer reviewed journal, International Social Science Review. This article used survey data from college students to analyze the perceptions of young adults on aging and older adults. In this study, participants perceived women as entering older adulthood before men, however, overall beliefs and stereotypes produced mostly positive conclusions about older adults. Further, despite the perceptions that young adults had of the aging population and process, college-age participants held a more positive association with their personal aging process.

It is with great sadness that we announce the tragic passing of 2009 graduate Morgan Stankey. Morgan was an outstanding and beloved student at UE, majoring in History and Political Science. She is survived by her mother Michelle, her father Dr Michael Stankey, and her stepfather Dr Stuart Dorsey, as well as her sisters Gretchen and Rachael. There will be a memorial service at Aldersgate United Methodist Church, 5130 Lincoln Avenue, on April 6 at 11am, to which all her friends in the University community are invited.

Michael Ikejiani recorded a 1-under 70 in Tuesday’s final round of the WIU Invite to earn an 8th-place finish for the University of Evansville men’s golf team.

Ikejiani completed the opening two rounds at TPC at Deere Run with a total of 151 strokes.  His scores checked in at 75 and 76 before his leap on Tuesday.  His tie for 8th led the Purple Aces.

Coming in second on the team was Nicholas Gushrowski.  Following a 3-over 74 in Monday’s second round, Gushrowski posted a 78 earlier today.  His 229 tied him for the 25th spot.

Masatoyo Kato completed the tournament with a 230.  His low round of the tournament was a 1-over 72 in the second 18 holes while his 80 on Tuesday earned him a tie for 28th.  Next up was Henry Kiel.  An 84 in round three gave him a 234 for the weekend.  His score tied him for 39th.

Caleb Wassmer had a solid final round.  While a 77 in the first 18 holes was his low round of the event, Wassmer carded a 78 on Tuesday.  His 236 was tied for 44th place.  Luke Schneider wrapped up the UE contingent, posting a 3-round total of 250.  His final round finished at an 83.

David Ayala of Western Illinois took top individual honors.  Hs final round finished at a 2-under 69 to give him a 3-round score of 213.  He defeated Carter Doose of Omaha by one shot.

St. Thomas rallied to take the team victory.  Their 292 marked the lowest team score of the day and gave them an 881.  South Dakota came home in second with an 887 while the Aces took the 6th spot with a 907.

Next week, the men will take part in the Big Blue Intercollegiate, which is hosted by Tennessee State.

After Jess Willsey gave the University of Evansville softball team a 2-1 lead in the top of the ninth, Isabella Henning with a 2-run game-winning home run in the bottom of the frame to give Indiana State a 3-2 win at Price Field.

A low-scoring contest saw the Purple Aces score a run in the first with the Sycamores matching it with a score in the bottom of the fifth.  The game went to extra innings with ISU rallying for the victory.

Evansville had a quick start to the day was Marah Wood crossed the plate in the top of the first to make it a 1-0 game.  After reaching on a leadoff single, Wood stole second and scored on a ground out by Zoe Frossard.  Taylor Howe also picked up a single in the inning.

Over the next six innings, the Purple Aces racked up just two hits.  Sydney Weatherford threw the first 4 1/3 innings with just one earned run scoring on seven hits.  The Sycamores saw the tying run score in the bottom of the fifth on a bases loaded walk.

Things remained knotted at 1-1 as the game entered the 9th when Jess Willey approached the plate.  She drove the first pitch over the left field wall to put Evansville in front at 2-1.  With one out in the bottom of the inning, a single by Danielle Henning brought up Isabella Henning, who sent the first pitch she saw out of the ballpark for the walk-off triumph.

Wood picked up two of UE’s six hits on the day.  Weatherford gave up one run in her start while Megan Brenton tossed four frames and allowed two earned runs on three hits.

This weekend, UE is back home for a 3-game series versus Southern Illinois.

Down 8-2 after two innings, the University of Evansville baseball team rallied on Tuesday for a wild 12-10 come-from-behind victory over the host Purdue Boilermakers at Alexander Field in West Lafayette, Indiana. The win marked UE’s seventh-straight win over Big Ten competition, and its nation-leading eighth-straight road victory.

“Our guys showed a lot of character and a lot of heart tonight,” said UE head coach Wes Carroll. “Purdue really earned that early lead, as they were producing a lot of barrels very early on. But, we had different guys step up to help us pick up this win.

“I thought that Michael Parks did a great job of putting zeros up on the scoreboard and righting the ship for us from a pitching standpoint, and then I thought everyone up and down our lineup stepped up and came through when we needed it. I think this win can really kick-start us into something very special.”

Evansville took an early 2-0 lead on solo home runs by fifth-year first baseman Chase Hug and sophomore designated hitter Evan Waggoner in the first two innings. For Hug, it was his seventh home run of the year, while Waggoner’s home run was his first collegiate home run at UE.

The lead would be short-lived, though, as the Boilermakers would explode for eight runs in the bottom of the second inning, as eight-straight batters reached base, capped by a three-run home run by catcher Connor Caskenette. But, the game was far from over.

UE junior catcher Brendan Hord would score Hug with a two-out RBI single in the top of the third inning, before Waggoner would add a two-run double later in the frame to cut the Purdue lead to 8-5. Parks would then go to work on the mound, and retire the final nine men he faced over the next three innings to keep the score 8-5.

Senior reliever Jakob Meyer would work a scoreless bottom of the sixth to keep the score 8-5, before Evansville would rally for five runs in the seventh inning to take a 10-8 lead. After fifth-year outfielder Eric Roberts doubled to lead off the frame, Hug walked and junior shortstop Simon Scherry followed with an RBI single to score the frame’s first run.

An RBI ground out by Hord would get UE back within one run, before senior third baseman Brent Widder produced an RBI single to tie the game at 8-8. Sophomore centerfielder Ty Rumsey would then follow two batters later with a two-out, two-run home run to right field to give UE a 10-8 lead.

Purdue would answer right back with a two-run home run of its own in the bottom of the seventh inning, but UE would respond with two runs in the top of the eighth inning to grab a 12-10 lead. Hug plated fifth-year outfielder Danny Borgstrom with an RBI double in the frame, and Hord followed two batters later with an RBI single to produce the final margin of victory. Graduate reliever John MacCauley and redshirt-junior closer Nate Hardman combined to shut down Purdue over the final two frames to help UE snap a four-game losing streak.

Hug went 3-for-4 and finished a triple shy of the cycle to lead UE offensively. He also scored four runs and drove in two. Hord also went 3-for-5 with a double and three RBI, while Waggoner, Widder and Scherry all had two-hit efforts as well.

With the win, Evansville improves to 17-11 overall. Purdue, meanwhile, falls to 12-15. The Purple Aces will now return to German American Bank Field at Charles H. Braun Stadium this weekend for a three-game Missouri Valley Conference series against Valparaiso. The series begins Friday night at 6 p.m. and all three games of the series can be heard live in Evansville on 107.1 FM-WJPS and the Old National Bank/Purple Aces Sports Network from Learfield.

 The University of Evansville (UE) has announced the receipt of a $30 million federal grant program through the United States Department of Education (DOE) that will establish the Evansville's Promise Neighborhood (EPN). UE is part of a new cohort funded in 2023. Only three Neighborhoods in the nation were awarded in 2023.

The aim of the funding is to assist children and youth who are growing up in Promise Neighborhoods, providing them with access to outstanding schools as well as robust family and community support systems. These resources will help prepare them to achieve academic excellence, make the transition to college, and, ultimately, embark on a successful career.

The University of Evansville, as lead applicant, submitted the 2022 grant application to the DOE for an Evansville Promise Neighborhood on October 7, 2022, with a total request of $30 million over five years. Twenty-three Evansville Promise Neighborhood partner agencies accounted for a match totaling $32,497,295.55, for a total of more than $62 million to be invested in the community. This figure comes from the cost invested in providing wraparound care services to the schools and neighborhoods designated as the Evansville Promise Neighborhood. The Promise Neighborhood includes six schools: Evans Elementary School, Delaware Elementary School, Lincoln School, Bosse High School, Lodge Community School, and Glenwood Leadership Academy. The major partners for the EPN are UE, EVSC, E-REP, and the Evansville Promise Zone.
