In 2023, UE will launch a four-year Bachelor of Science in Creative Technologies degree.

Combining elements from UE’s Departments of Art, Communication, Theatre, and Music Conservatory, the BS in Creative Technologies aims to build students’ technological skills in the creation of sound, video, lighting, graphic, and other technologies used for creative endeavors.

The new program combines multiple disciplines to engage students in the conception, development, and production of creative content. From the first draft to the final product, students in Creative Technologies will be challenged to develop their creative skills through immersion in fundamentals of art, design, music, communication and creative writing, and to bring their creations to life onstage, onscreen, or on-air through a variety of cutting-edge digital technologies. Joe Atkinson, MFA, Assistant Professor of Communication, will serve as the Program Director.

SPAN 313 focuses on the development of communicative competence, as well as on understanding Hispanic cultures and issues of identity of heritage speakers of Spanish in the United States. Students will also develop an awareness and understanding of Hispanic cultures, including language variation, customs, geography, history, and current events. Taught exclusively in Spanish, this course is designed for heritage or native speakers only. Prerequisites: SPAN 212, or placement exam score.

The University of Evansville now has a student exchange agreement with the University of Malaga in Malaga, Spain. Each Spring semester, students will be able to attend the University of Malaga by paying only their regular tuition at the University of Evansville.

A few particulars:

• UE students must have a B2 competence level of Spanish.
• UE students should start the application process by May1st of the year prior to the year they plan to go abroad. This will allow them to select the courses that the student wants to take while abroad and determine how the credits will be transferred back to UE.
• The application process should be finished by October 1st
• UE students will take a maximum of 18 credits, with the option of taking an internship (6 credits) with the Department of Translation and Interpretation in the Department of English Studies at University of Malaga.
• Students will finalize the registration process upon arrival at University of Malaga.
• Students will pay tuition and fees to UE while paying room and board to University of Malaga. University of Malaga will help UE students find accommodations.
• Students participating in this program shall be responsible for the cost of their travel to and from Malaga, Spain.

Academic Affairs is pleased to announce the call for nominations for the 2023 Outstanding Teacher Award. The University bestows this award annually to honor a faculty member for extraordinary teaching effectiveness that inspires the intellectual development of students. Nominees must be a full-time faculty member who has taught at UE for two years or more and holds the rank of lecturer, instructor, assistant professor, associate professor, or professor. The winner is recognized at Commencement in May.

Nicholas Gushrowski and Henry Kiel shot even scores of 72 to lead the University of Evansville men’s golf team in the opening round of the Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate.

Gushrowski and Kiel completed the even rounds on Sunday at the River Course of the Sevierville Golf Club.  The duo is tied for the 19th position with two rounds remaining.  Third on the Purple Aces squad was Daniil Romashkin.  His 1-over 73 has him tied for 28th on the leaderboard.

Michael Ikejiani carded a 2-over 74 while Luke Schneider shot a 75 in the first round of play.  The duo is tied for 38th and 59th, respectively.  Three individuals are in the event for UE with Carson Parker leading the way.  A 2-under 70 has him in a tie for 10th place.  Isaac Rohleder recorded a 73 while Masatoyo Kato registered a 74 on Sunday.

UE is in 6th place with a 291 and is just four strokes behind a 3-way tie for third.  Carson-Newman leads the team standings with a 280 while Walters State CC is three behind in second.  Two individuals pace the field with opening round scores of 67, five under par.

Monday’s round is set for a shotgun start at 11:30 a.m. ET.

University of Evansville junior starter Donovan Schultz tossed seven shutout innings on Sunday, and fifth-year first baseman Chase Hug and sophomore outfielder Ty Rumsey launched home runs, as the Purple Aces downed the host Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders, 5-3, to win the weekend series at Reese Smith Jr Field in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.

“This was a great series win on the road for this team,” said UE head coach Wes Carroll. “I really am proud of the effort and energy this squad showed the last two days after losing the opener on Friday. Donovan Schultz had an outstanding effort today, and Chase Hug just continues to stay hot at the plate.”

Evansville jumped out early, scoring a run before Schultz even took the mound. UE loaded the bases on a hit-by-pitch, a walk, and a bunt single by junior shortstop Simon Scherry, before junior catcher Brendan Hord plated a run with a run-scoring fielder’s choice to give UE a 1-0 lead.

MTSU would threaten with two men on in the bottom of the inning, but Schultz worked out of it. Then, a lead-off double in the bottom of the second inning put Schultz in another jam, but he bounced back to retire the next three men in order, and retired the next six men overall to set the tone for the contest.

Hug would then manufacture two runs for Schultz and the Aces in the fourth inning. With two outs, he roped an RBI double into the right-field corner to move UE’s lead to 2-0. Then, Hug scampered home from second on a wild pitch to move the lead to 3-0.

Schultz kept the Blue Raiders at bay through the middle innings, again retiring six-straight men at one point, before Hug would crush a solo home run to right field to give UE a 4-0 lead. Schultz then worked around a lead-off walk in the seventh inning to keep the Blue Raiders scoreless in his final inning of work. Schultz (2-1) scattered three hits and three walks in 7.0 scoreless innings while striking out four to earn his second-straight victory on the mound.

Rumsey would cap UE’s scoring with a solo home run of his own to right field in the eighth inning to push the lead to 5-0. The Blue Raiders would score three runs in the ninth inning, but reliever John MacCauley got MTSU shortstop Brett Coker to ground out to Scherry at short to end the contest.

Hug went 2-for-3 with a double, a home run, two runs scored and two RBI to lead UE. Rumsey also went 2-for-4 with a home run – his first of the year. Scherry, senior second baseman Brent Widder and sophomore third baseman Ben Stuart also had hits for UE.

With the victory, Evansville improves to 9-7 overall and has won nine of its last 11 games overall. MTSU, meanwhile, falls to 7-8 with the loss. UE will wrap up a five-game road trip on Tuesday afternoon by traveling to Louisville, Kentucky to take on the Bellarmine Knights. First-pitch is set for 1 p.m. central time.

With the score tied at 2-2, the University of Evansville softball team scored three runs in the top of the fourth on the way to a 5-2 victory over Lipscomb in Sunday’s final game of the Lady Bison Classic.

Following a scoreless two innings, the Purple Aces broke through with a pair of runs in the third.  Brooke McCorkle led off with a walk with Dori Brown entering to pinch run.  Jess Willsey followed with a single before Alexa Davis loaded the bases with a 1-out walk.  With two outs, Brown scored on a passed ball while Jenna Nink earned a bases loaded walk to make it a 2-0 game.

Lipscomb matched UE’s tally with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the third but Evansville’s offense got back to work in the fourth.  Hannah Hood hit a leadoff single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from McCorkle.  Willsey added another single before stealing second to put two runners in scoring position with one out.  Hood put the Aces back in front when she scored on a wild pitch.

With Willsey still on third, Alexa Davis drew a 2-out walk and stole second to bring Zoe Frossard to the plate.  Frossard single to right to bring in two more runs and make it a 5-2 game.  From that point, the pitching of Erin Kleffman was the difference.  She held the Bison to one hit in the final four frames on the way to her fifth win of the season.  Mikayla Jolly tossed 2 1/3 innings making the start before Kleffman went the final 4 2/3.  Jolly allowed two runs, one earned, on one hit.  Kleffman gave up just one hit in her work.

Willsey recorded two of the Aces’ six hits while Frossard led the way with two RBI.

UE opened the day completing Saturday’s game against Akron that was delayed in the seventh inning due to weather.  The Zips completed the game with a 13-6 win.

Missouri Valley Conference play opens on Friday with a 3-game home series against Bradley.

The University of Evansville swimming & diving program set three records on Saturday, and the Purple Aces posted three Top 20 finishes, to wrap up action at the 2023 CSCAA National Invitational Championships in Elkhart, Indiana. Saturday’s meet also concludes the 2022-23 season for the Purple Aces.

“It has been an incredible journey for this team!” said UE head coach Stuart Wilson. “We started out the season with the goal of elevating this program to another level, and we have done that.

“We had the goal to break as many school records as we could, and we did that – over 30 times this year. We had the goal to bring Evansville onto the national scene at the U.S. Open earlier this year, and we did that. We had goals to produce All-MVC and All-MAC performers, and we did that. We had goals to earn NCAA Team Academic All-America honors, and we accomplished that.

“I could go on and on and on of what this season means to this team and this program. But, the most important thing is that they learned two things: that working hard consistently pays off, and to trust the process and the training and good things will happen. We did that this year, and it has made them successful both in the pool and in the classroom, and it will help them in life as well.”

On Saturday, the Purple Aces established three new program records before 9 a.m. central time. Sophomore Patrik Vilbergsson (Kopavogur, Iceland) lowered his own school record in the men’s 200-Yard Backstroke to 1:47.14 to qualify for Saturday night’s consolation final. Vilbergsson would place sixth in the consolation final with a time of 1:48.04 to place 16th overall out of 61 competitors.

Sophomores Carlos Souto (A Coruna, Spain) and Sveva Brugnoli (Rome, Italy) also established program records in the 100-Yard IM event. Souto posted a time of 53.47 in the preliminary round to establish the men’s Division I program record. Brugnoli, meanwhile, posted a time of 58.12 to establish the women’s record and place 41st out of 86 swimmers in a hotly contested race. In fact, one second faster would have placed Brugnoli inside the top 20, the race was that close.

Vilbergsson was joined in Saturday’s finals by junior Alon Baer (Gesher HaZiv, Israel), who advanced to the consolation final of the 200-Yard Breaststroke. Baer finished second in the consolation final, edged by Tennessee’s Joseph Jordan by 0.09 seconds to placed 12th overall with a time of 1:58.10. Baer’s finals time actually was the 10th-fastest time in Saturday night’s two finals, as it was faster than two individuals in the main final.

UE also posted a Top 20 finish in the men’s 400-Yard Freestyle Relay, as the quartet of senior Riccardo Di Domenico (Johannesburg, South Africa) and sophomores Daniel Santos Lopez (Madrid, Spain), Benjamin Hasanovic (Innsbruck, Austria) and Jakob Grundbacher (Thalwil, Switzerland) combined for a time of 3:00.24 to place 19th overall, just 1.13 seconds off of the UE school record. Di Domenico led off with a 100-Yard Free split time of 44.81, just 0.37 seconds off his own school record in the 100 Free in his final race as a Purple Ace.

Hasanovic and senior Max Dehen (Ramsey, Minn./Anoka) competed alongside Baer in Saturday morning’s prelim session of the 200 Breast, and posted times of 2:05.57 and 2:06.95 respectively. Sophomore Mari Müller (Zurich, Switzerland) represented UE in the women’s 200-Yard Breaststroke and posted a time of 2:20.64.

Junior Grant Kay (Ellicott City, Md./Hebron) placed 31st overall in the men’s 1,650-Yard Freestyle, as he posted a time of 16:26.31. Di Domenico and Grundbacher also posted times of 45.71 and 45.91 respectively in Saturday morning’s prelims for the men’s 100-Yard Freestyle. Junior Iryna Tsesiul (Minsk, Belarus) also posted a time of 56.22 in a women’s 100-Yard Backstroke time trial in her final race of the season.

As a team, Evansville posted 119.5 points on the men’s side to place 29th out of the 41 scoring teams. The UE women, meanwhile, scored nine points to place 55th out of the 58 scoring women’s teams. The CSCAA National Invitational Championships are college swimming’s equivalent to basketball’s NIT, and features the fastest swimmers and teams in the country who are not competing in the NCAA Championships.

University of Evansville senior Riccardo Di Domenico (Johannesburg, South Africa) posted UE’s best finish on day two of the CSCAA National Invitational Championships on Friday, as he finished sixth in the consolation final of the men’s 200-Yard Freestyle.

Di Domenico posted a time of 1:38.24 to place sixth in the 10-person consolation final on Friday and place 16th overall out of 79 competitors in the men’s 200-Yard Freestyle. It moved the UE men’s team score to 69.5 points through two days of competition.

“Today was a really fast day in the pool overall, and I thought that we had some really good swims,” said UE head coach Stuart Wilson. “To see Riccardo make the finals was good to see, and we had a couple of others who just barely missed making the finals in closely-contested races. Overall, I thought that we had a good day today, and we have one more day tomorrow, so let’s finish strong!”

Junior Alon Baer (Gesher HaZiv, Israel) just barely missed making Friday’s finals in the 100-Yard Breaststroke, as he placed 23rd out of 70 competitors with a time of 54.72. He finished just 0.12 seconds shy of qualifying for the consolation finals, and 0.65 seconds shy of making the main final. Freshman Daniil Goncharuk (Kyiv, Ukraine – 56.58), senior Max Dehen (Ramsey, Minn./Anoka – 57.58) and sophomore Benjamin Hasanovic (Innsbruck, Austria – 57.85) also represented UE in the 100-Yard Breaststroke field.

Sophomore Daniel Santos Lopez (Madrid, Spain) also placed 23rd out of 86 competitors in the men’s 100-Yard Butterfly. He was just 0.43 seconds away from qualifying for Friday night’s finals.

The UE men’s 800 Free Relay team (Di Domenico, sophomores Jakob Grundbacher and Carlos Souto, and junior Grant Kay) and the 200 Medley Relay team (sophomore Patrik Vilbergsson, Baer, Santos Lopez, and Goncharuk) both placed 28th overall with times of 6:49.98 and 1:30.38, respectively.

Vilbergsson also placed 32nd overall in the men’s 100-Yard Backstroke event with a preliminary round time of 49.82. Just 0.71 seconds separated Vilbergsson from advancing to Friday night’s finals in the event. Kay also joined Di Domenico in the 200-Yard Freestyle field on Friday morning, and posted a time of 1:41.92.

On the women’s side, junior Iryna Tsesiul (Minsk, Belarus) competed in the 100-Yard Backstroke and posted a time of 57.41. UE also posted a time of 1:46.22 in the women’s 200-Yard Medley Relay, with Tsesiul leading off with a time of 25.87 in the 50-Yard Backstroke. Sophomore Mari Müller (Zurich, Switzerland) then posted a time of 30.39 in the 50-Yard Breaststroke, before fellow sophomore Sveva Brugnoli (Rome, Italy) posted a 50-Yard Butterfly split time of 25.36. Senior Allison McDonald (Cape Girardeau, Mo./Central) then came home in a 50-Yard Freestyle split time of 24.60 in her final collegiate race.

The CSCAA National Invitational Championships will conclude on Saturday, with preliminary round action starting at 8:30 a.m. central time, distance finals starting at 12:30 p.m., and finals beginning at 5 p.m. Saturday’s schedule will include action in the 100 IM, the 200-Yard Backstroke, the 100-Yard Freestyle, the 200-Yard Breaststroke, 200-Yard Butterfly, the 1,650-Yard Freestyle, and 400-Yard Freestyle Relay.

The University of Evansville baseball team executed in all three facets of the game on Saturday – pitching, defense, and at the plate – to even its three-game series at Middle Tennessee State with a 5-3 victory at Reese Smith Jr Field in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. The rubber match of the series is set for Sunday at 1 p.m. on ESPN+.

“This was a great win to get back into the series,” said UE head coach Wes Carroll. “We had a good plan against their starter, and were able to get out in front early. Then, we continued to play great defense, and I thought that our bullpen was outstanding to secure today’s win.”

Evansville threatened in the first two innings, putting runners in scoring position in each frame, but came up empty to start. Evansville was finally able to break through though in the third inning and manufacture three runs to grab control of the contest.

Two walks and an infield single by fifth-year first-baseman Chase Hug loaded the bases with no one out. Evansville would plate its first run on a passed ball, before a wild pitch scored a second run. UE junior catcher Brendan Hord then came through with a sacrifice fly to give UE a 3-0 cushion.

The Blue Raiders would quickly respond with two runs in the bottom of the third inning to cut the deficit to 3-2. The score would remain that way until the top of the fifth inning, when UE fifth-year outfielder Eric Roberts crushed a pay-off pitch to right-center field for his third home run of the year to give UE a 4-2 lead. The Purple Aces would then turn to the bullpen, and graduate transfer Jarrett Blunt and senior Jakob Meyer took care of the rest.

Blunt (2-0) worked three scoreless innings out of the UE bullpen, scattering two singles and a walk while striking out four to earn the victory on the mound. Meyer then worked a perfect eighth inning, and after UE tacked on another run in the ninth inning on a wild pitch, he surrendered a run on a hit while striking out two to earn his first save of the season.

Offensively, UE pounded out eight hits, with Hug, fifth-year outfielder Danny Borgstrom and sophomore outfielder Ty Rumsey all collecting two hits. Evansville also was able to work nine walks in the contest, with all nine men in the lineup reaching base safely.

Shortstop Brett Coker went 3-for-4 with an RBI to lead MTSU offensively.

With the victory, Evansville improves to 8-7 overall, and the Purple Aces have won eight of their last 10 contests. Middle Tennessee State, meanwhile, sees its record even at 7-7. The series will conclude Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. with UE sending junior LHP Donovan Schultz (1-1, 5.14 ERA) to the mound for his fourth start of the year.

Saturday’s action at the Lady Bison Classic opened with the University of Evansville softball team falling to Indiana University by a 13-1 final before playing six innings of their second game of the day versus Akron.  Play was halted in the top of the seventh due to weather with the Zips leading by a 13-6 score.

Game One – Indiana 13, UE 1 (5 innings)

Indiana scored three runs in the top of the first and cruised to a 13-1 victory in five innings.  The Purple Aces scored a single run in the bottom of the fifth.  Sarah Stone got the Hoosiers on the board with a 3-run home run in the first before single runs in the second and third extended the lead to 5-0.

In the top of the fifth, the Hoosiers put the game out of reach with eight runs.  Brianna Copeland contributed a 2-RBI double before Taryn Kern added a 3-run home run.  Evansville scored in the bottom of the fifth with Marah Wood getting it started with a 1-out walk.  Brooke McCorkle followed with a single up the middle and Jess Willsey reached on a fielder’s choice that saw Wood score.

Evansville’s hits came from McCorkle and Alexa Davis while IU had 13 hits.  Erin Kleffman took the loss for UE pitching four innings.  Sophie Kleiman was credited with the win for IU.  In four innings, she gave up just one hit.

Game Two – Akron 13, UE 6 (T7 – play to resume Sunday)

The Zips jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning as they recorded four hits.  Evansville cut into the deficit with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame.  With two outs, Taylor Howe walked before advancing to third on a Jenna Nink double.  Howe scored on a wild pitch before Nink came home on an Akron error.

In the second, the Zips got those two runs back while three scores in the top of the fourth extended the lead to 10-2.  Alexa Davis led the bottom of the fifth off with a solo home run before an RBI double by Hannah Hood made it a 10-4 game.

Akron scored three times in the top of the sixth before the Aces plated two runs in the bottom of the inning.  Davis recorded an RBI triple while Zoe Frossard brought in a second run when she reached on an error.  In the top of the 7th, play was halted due to weather and the game will resume at 11 a.m. Sunday morning. 

Middle Tennessee State starter Jaden Hamm tossed a complete-game one-hit shutout on Friday, and Blue Raider lead-off man JT Mabry went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, as MTSU took the opener from the visiting University of Evansville baseball team, 2-0, at Reese Smith Jr. Field in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.

“We spoiled a great start today from Nick Smith, and their starter put together a three-pitch mix today that we couldn’t handle,” said UE head coach Wes Carroll. “Big game tomorrow to get back into this series.”

After Hamm set the tone in the first inning by sending the Purple Aces down in order, MTSU got all of the offense it would need for the day on just six pitches. Mabry led off the frame with a line-drive to right that just got past a diving Eric Roberts in right field and rolled all the way to the warning track for a triple. He then trotted home three pitches later on a sacrifice fly by shortstop Brett Coker to give MTSU a 1-0 lead.

From there, Hamm and Smith traded scoreless frames on the mound until the sixth inning. UE sophomore center-fielder Ty Rumsey opened the sixth inning with Evansville’s only hit of the day on a bouncing ball over the mound. UE would put runners on the corners with one out, but Hamm was able to get a double-play ground ball to get out of trouble and maintain a 1-0 lead. Mabry then worked a one-out hit-by-pitch in the bottom of the inning and scored on a double by Coker to push the MTSU lead to 2-0.

Evansville would bring the potential tying run to the plate in the top of the ninth inning with two outs, but Hamm struck out UE junior catcher Brendan Hord to end the threat and the contest. It was a fitting end of the day for Hamm (3-1), who struck out 11 men while walking three in the complete-game victory.

Smith (1-3) was the tough-luck loser for Evansville, as he allowed the two runs on six hits while striking out five in 7.0 innings of work. At one point in the contest, Smith set down 11 MTSU hitters in order.

With the win, Middle Tennessee State improves to 7-6 on the season, while Evansville sees its record even at 7-7. The two teams will continue the series on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m., with UE sending senior LHP Tyler Denu (1-0, 3.45 ERA) to the mound. Saturday’s game can be seen live on ESPN+.

Action resumes on Sunday for the University of Evansville men’s golf team with a trip to Sevierville, Tenn. for the Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate.

The tournament runs Sunday through Tuesday with 18 holes taking place each day at the River Course at Sevierville Golf Club.  A 12-team field includes Tennessee Tech, Tennessee State, USI, Northern Iowa, Evansville, Findlay, Carson-Newman, Roan State CC, Walters State CC, Maryville (TN) College, Chicago State and West Virginia.

UE opened the season in February at the Alabama State University Spring Classic at RTJ Golf Trail at Capitol Hill.  Led by Michael Ikejiani's 8th place finish, the Aces tied for second place.

Scoring a 755 for the 2 ½ rounds, the Purple Aces completed the tournament tied with Alabama State for the second position.  Arkansas-Pine Bluff took top honors with a 742.  Michael Ikejiani was the top performer for UE, finishing round two with a 76 before carding a 40 in the final nine holes.  He had a 188.  His 72 in round one tied for the team's low score at the tournament.

Daniil Romashkin tied for the 9th spot with a 189.  Following rounds of 74 and 76, he notched a 39 in the last nine holes.  One behind him was the duo of Nicholas Gushrowski and Henry Kiel.  Both scored a 190 to tie for 12th place.  Gushrowski finished both full rounds with a 76 and was halfway there in the last nine, totaling a 38.  Kiel had a 75 to open play before shooting an even 72 in the second round.  His final nine holes finished at a 43.

In Friday’s opening day of the Lady Bison Classic, the University of Evansville softball team fell in contests to Akron and Indiana University at Draper Diamond.  The first game of the day saw the Zips hang on for a 3-1 win before the Hoosiers took a 5-2 win in the second contest of the day.

Game One – Akron 3, UE 1

Alexa Davis hit a leadoff home run in the first inning but Akron scored twice in the bottom of the frame before finishing with a 3-1 win.  Davis drove a 3-1 pitch over the wall in right center to give the Aces a quick 1-0 advantage.

Akron recorded three hits in the bottom of the first and scored twice to take the lead.  Two more hits saw the Zips threaten again in the second but UE starting pitcher Paige McAllister got out of the jam.  McAllister settled in and would not allow another run until the sixth when a Madison Dudek RBI single extended the lead to 3-1.

Zoe Frossard led off the seventh with a single while Jess Willsey and Hannah Hood followed with 1-out singles to load the bases.  Akron recorded the final outs to clinch the win.  McAllister gave up three runs, two earned, on 10 hits in 5 1/3 innings.  Sydney Weatherford registered the final two outs.  Akron picked up 11 hits in the game while UE had four.

Game Two – Indiana 5, UE 2

With the game tied at 2-2 heading to the bottom of the third, Indiana broke the tie and would finish with a 5-2 victory.  The Hoosiers had a quick start, plating two runs in the bottom of the first.  Evansville’s offense got rolling with two runs to tie the game in the third.

Sydney Kalonihea reached on an error and would score the Aces’ first run of the game on a double by Taylor Howe.  Marah Wood, who reached on a 1-out single, tied the game when she scored on a passed ball.  IU wasted little time in jumping back in front as Brianna Copeland reached on an error before scoring on a second error in the same play.

Single runs in the fourth and fifth extended the IU lead to 5-2.  From there, Copeland took care of business in the circle.  She did not allow a UE hit in the final three innings to help the Hoosiers take the 5-2 win.  Mikayla Jolly made the start and tossed three innings.  She gave up three runs, two earned, on just one hit.  Megan Brenton went the final three frames and allowed two runs, one of which was earned.

On Saturday, the Aces face the same two squads with game one against the Hoosiers set for a 10 a.m. start before another meeting against Akron at 5:30 p.m.
