The University Symphony Orchestra and Wind Ensemble will perform Tuesday evening at the Victory Theatre at 7:30 p.m. Trumpet professor Timothy Zifer will  be the soloist for Handel’s Suite in D Major. Special guest Mayor Lloyd Winnecke will narrate Lincoln Portrait by Aaron Copland.

Students interested in living in the New Hall for 2023-24 should pick up request cards in the Office of Residence Life.

New Hall is reserved freshman and sophomore level students. Rising sophomores interested in living in New Hall for next year can submit their request cards for 4 person or 6 person pods (sophomores will primarily be assigned to 4 person pods). Assignments will be made based on the combined credit hours, as of the end of Fall 2022, of each group applying Students/groups currently residing in New Hall will have priority over students/groups who do not currently reside in New Hall.

New Hall request cards are due back to the Office of Residence Life by 5:00 p.m., Friday, March 3.

Academic Affairs is pleased to announce the call for nominations for the 2023 Outstanding Teacher Award. The University bestows this award annually to honor a faculty member for extraordinary teaching effectiveness that inspires the intellectual development of students. Nominees must be a full-time faculty member who has taught at UE for two years or more and holds the rank of lecturer, instructor, assistant professor, associate professor, or professor. The winner is recognized at Commencement in May.

Robert Baines, Associate Professor of English, gave a paper at the Louisville Conference on Literature and Culture at the University of Louisville on Friday, February 24. His paper, titled “How Far is Too Far?: Ulysses, Finnegans Wake, and the Boundaries of Modernism,” was part of an International James Joyce Foundation panel that also included Thomas Gurke and Josephine A. McQuail.

UE PT faculty, ProRehab and UE Sports Residency Program residents and alumni recently completed performance testing of the St. Louis Cardinals Minor League Baseball players in Jupiter, Florida.
The team was led by Dr. Phil Plisky ’98, Associate Professor of Physical Therapy and Director of Residency Programs and Associate Professor of Physical Therapy and Director of the ProRehab/UE Sports Residency Program Dr. Kyle Matsel ‘11. The team also included current and former ProRehab/UE sports residents Jon Newbold, Stephanie Sherwood, and AJ Hermann '18. The goal of this testing is to guide the optimization of player health and performance.

The University of Evansville’s (UE) Schroeder Family School of Business Administration announced the investiture of two faculty members during a ceremony on Wednesday.

Rania Mousa, PhD was named the Mead Johnson Nutrition Endowed Chair in Business and Yolanda Obaze, PhD was named the Guthrie May Endowed Chair in Business.

In 1993, the Mead Johnson Nutrition Endowed Chair in Business was established at the University of Evansville through a generous gift from Mead Johnson Nutrition and the Bristol-Myers Squib Foundation seeking to participate as responsible neighbors and members of the communities where its people live and work and where its facilities are located. The company understands its obligation to participate in and enhance the life of those communities. Originally known as the Bristol-Myers Squibb Chair, the Mead Johnson Nutrition Endowed Chair in Business is dedicated to building on the strengths of the University’s business school. The goal is to give students the opportunity to study with an outstanding professor who will inspire them to achieve greater levels of excellence and make a life-transforming difference in their academic careers. This endowed chair honors Mead Johnson Nutrition’s long-standing relationship with UE which began when the University moved to the City of Evansville in 1919. Throughout the years, representatives of the company have supported the UE as trustees, advisory board members, volunteers, and students. Mead Johnson has employed hundreds of University alumni.

Mead Johnson Nutrition Endowed Chair in Business Rania Mousa, PhD, Associate Professor of Accounting, holds a bachelor’s degree in Accounting from the American University in Cairo, Egypt. She also holds a Master of Business Administration from Illinois Institute of Technology and a PhD in Accounting from the University of Birmingham in England. Mousa has been teaching at the University of Evansville since 2010. She teaches courses in Financial Accounting, Accounting Information Systems, Computer Accounting, and Forensic Accounting. Mousa’s doctoral research centered on examining the implementation process of open standard reporting technologies in the United Kingdom’s His Majesty’s Revenue and Customs and Companies House. Her research has expanded to cover a wide range of areas, including accounting information systems, financial and non-financial reporting technologies, electronic government, financial inclusion, and pedagogical research in forensic accounting and accounting education. Over the last 13 years, Mousa has published 14 peer-reviewed publications, including 11 papers and three book chapters. During her tenure at UE, Mousa has received multiple awards, including the Schroeder Dean’s Research Award in 2017 and Teaching Award in 2019. In August 2022, she received the American Accounting Association’s Forensic Accounting Section’s Best Teaching Innovation Award for a fraud case she created. This year she has received the 2022-2023 UE Global Scholar Award allowing her to present her paper on Grameen America’s remarkable response to the COVID-19 pandemic at the University of Bologna in Italy.

Guthrie May Endowed Chair in Business - The Guthrie May Endowed Chair in the Schroeder Family School of Business Administration was established by the University of Evansville to honor Guthrie May for his long-standing devotion, effective leadership, and financial support to the University of Evansville, with the intent of promoting teaching excellence and community outreach by the Guthrie May Endowed Chair in the Schroeder Family School of Business Administration. Guthrie May graduated from Evansville College in 1931. Guthrie and his wife, Alice ’34, were tremendous friends of their alma mater. This fact is best exhibited by the gift of their home, the May House, to UE to be used as the President’s residence. To previous generations, the “American Dream” meant home ownership. Prior to World War II, the vast majority of Americans did not own their homes. More than anyone else, Guthrie May brought the “American Dream” of home ownership to Evansville. He built more than 7,000 homes in Evansville and in other communities across the country. He also was involved in the development and construction of shopping centers, business condominiums, and residential condominiums. Guthrie May’s involvement with community leadership is clear from the many boards on which he served and activities in which he participated. He was a member of the University of Evansville Board of Trustees, the Evansville-Vanderburgh School Corporations Board of Directors, the Administrative Board of Trinity United Methodist Church, the Board of Directors of United Way of Southwestern Indiana, Evansville's Future Board of Directors, Metropolitan Evansville Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, the Evansville Board of Realtors, the Evansville Rotary Club, Citizens National Bank Board of Directors, and many other boards. He was the recipient of many honors and awards from various charities and the local community.

Guthrie May Endowed Chair in Business Yolanda Obaze, PhD, is an Associate Professor of Supply Chain Management. She also serves as the Director Center for Logistics and Supply Chain Management. Obaze obtained both her MBA and PhD from the University of North Texas. Obaze was instrumental in the creation and implementation of the Logistics and Supply Chain Management (LSCM) program and continues to teach a significant portion of the curriculum. She ensures the efficient running of the Center through cross-industry collaborations. Obaze currently serves as the Academic Advisor for the LSCM student organization, Business Professional of America student chapter, and the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity at UE. In 2018, she received the Schroeder Dean's Service Award. She is passionate about her research in the humanitarian logistics field. Her doctoral research centered on the community-based context of humanitarian logistics and supply chain management. She continues her research by helping much of the community-based companies in the Evansville area. Obaze serves on the Board of Directors for both the Evansville Association of the Blind and the Potter’s Wheel Ministries. Her research work also extends to Aces Haven, the on-campus food pantry that addresses food insecurity among students and the local community. Obaze received the Schroeder Dean’s Research Award in 2019 and was a 2020 UE Global Scholar Award recipient. In 2019, she was awarded the Annual Decision Sciences Institute’s Best Theoretical Paper Award for her work on social supply chain management.

Congrats to Physical Therapy Clinical Assistant Professor Dr. Hannah Lamar '19 for being selected to join the Parkinson's Foundation PT Faculty Program! Dr. Lamar is one of six faculty accepted into the program at Washington University, which includes online and in-person training and mentorship with nationally recognized Parkinson's experts. All designed for PT faculty to enhance knowledge and prepare a curriculum based on the latest evidence-based Parkinson's research and care. Dr. Lamar teaches neurorehabilitation content at UE. She graduated from UE's AT program in 2016 and DPT '19. She became a Board-Certified Clinical Specialist in Neurologic PT in 2021, practicing inpatient rehabilitation at Ascension St. Vincent Evansville.

The William L. Ridgway College of Arts and Sciences announces the investiture of Kristy Miller, PhD, as the Weller Endowed Professor in Chemistry and Roslyn Lampkins, PhD, as the Wargel Endowed Chair in Chemistry.

University of Evansville junior catcher Brendan Hord hit a go-head home run in the bottom of the seventh inning on Sunday, and UE’s pitchers combined to allow just two base hits to power the Purple Aces to a 5-3 victory over the visiting Eastern Michigan Eagles at German American Bank Field at Charles H. Braun Stadium in Evansville.

“This was a great series win against a good Eastern Michigan team,” said UE head coach Wes Carroll. “Our pitching was outstanding today, only giving up two hits, as Donovan Schultz gave us a quality start. I thought that Shane Harris did a great job of bridging the gap to John MacCauley, and MacCauley was able to shut it down for the win. Our offense had a couple of big at-bats as well to get those runs late. Overall, it was a good win all the way around.”

Evansville jumped to an early 3-0 lead with single runs in each of the first three innings. Senior third baseman Brent Widder delivered a two-out RBI triple to the gap in right-center field to start the scoring in the first inning. Junior second baseman Kip Fougerousse had a two-out RBI single in the second inning, and Hord had a two-out RBI single in the third inning to produce the three-run cushion.

Schultz was untouchable through the first four innings on the mound, allowing just a single base runner on a hit-by-pitch in the first inning. The only inning he ran into trouble was the fifth inning, when Eastern Michigan was able to tie the game at 3-3 on a two-run home run by left fielder Blake McRae and a solo home run by second baseman Corey Taylor four pitches apart. Schultz would finish by allowing just the three runs on two hits over six innings of work while striking out six.

The score would remain tied at 3-3 until the seventh, when Hord would blast a two-out home run deep to left field off the protective netting for the Lloyd Expressway to give UE a 4-3 lead. Evansville would then add an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth inning on a one-out RBI single by fifth-year outfielder Eric Roberts to produce the final margin of victory, 5-3.

Relievers Shane Harris (1-1) and John MacCauley (save) combined to toss three scoreless, hitless innings of relief out of the UE bullpen. Harris struck out the side in the seventh inning, and worked around a two-out walk in the eighth inning, while MacCauley worked a perfect ninth inning to record UE’s first save of the season.

Hord went 2-for-3 with a run scored an two RBI for UE, while fifth-year teammates Danny Borgstrom and Chase Hug also had two-hit afternoons. McRae and Taylor were the only Eagles to record hits.

With the victory, Evansville wins the weekend series and improves to 2-5 on the season. The Purple Aces have now won 13 of a possible 17 weekend series at German American Bank Field since the Braun Stadium renovation in 2020. Eastern Michigan, meanwhile, falls to 2-4 on the year with the loss. Evansville will hit the road on Wednesday for a mid-week game at preseason Ohio Valley Conference favorite Southeast Missouri State (2-6) in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. First-pitch is set for 3 p.m.

Sunday’s final round of the Bright Creek Women’s Invite saw the University of Evansville women’s golf team come home in second place at Bright’s Creek Club.

As a team, the Purple Aces shot a 308 on Sunday to wrap up the 3-round event with a 947. Their score was just one behind Presbyterian College. Gardner-Webb took third with a 948.

Leading the way for UE was Kate Petrova. Her low score of the weekend saw her record a 2-over 74 to finish with a score of 232. She tied for fourth place.

Allison Enchelmayer and Mallory Russell tied for the 7th spot with scores of 237. Enchelmayer had her low round of the tournament with a 76 on Sunday while Russell carded an 80.

Magdalena Borisova was the fourth UE player to earn a top 15 finish. Her 6-over 78 in the third round gave her a 242, which was good for a 12th place effort.

Carly Frazier tied for 25th with a 256. Her third round finished at an 87. Destynie Sheridan recorded a score of 87 on Sunday to tie for 23rd as an individual.

Neza Siftar of Gardner-Webb was the medalist. Highlighted by a 4-under 68 on Sunday, she tallied a 221 to defeat the competition by seven strokes. Next up for the ladies is the Nevel Meade Intercollegiate on March 20-21.

Down to just six healthy players by the end of the game, the University of Evansville men’s basketball team fell to Illinois State by a score of 72-53 on Sunday inside CEFCU Arena.

Kenny Strawbridge Jr. and Gabe Spinelli led the way with 12 and 10 points, respectively.  Strawbridge tied Preston Phillips for UE’s top tally of six rebounds.  Seneca Knight was the top scorer in the contest, scoring 26 points on a 9-of-17 shooting effort.  He was 5-of-8 from long range.

“Our guys played extremely hard all the way through the game.  We went cold for 3-4 minutes in the second half and Seneca Knight was hitting just about everything and that was the difference,” UE head coach David Ragland said.  “I thought we did a good job of making Illinois State take tough shots and to their credit – they hit them.”

Gage Bobe and Preston Phillips hit 3-pointers in a 2-for-2 start from the field to put UE in front at 6-0.  On the defensive end, UE was just as effective, forcing turnovers in each of the first four possessions.  Yacine Toumi connected on the third triple of the game to solidify a 9-4 Evansville lead at the 15:32 mark.

Following the quick start, the offense connected on one of its next nine shot attempts.  During that time, Illinois state scored six in a row to take its first lead at 10-9.  Kenny Strawbridge Jr. ended the drought with 11:48 remaining in the half to put the Aces back in front.  UE continued its solid play, retaking a 5-point lead with 5:16 remaining in the half when Marvin Coleman II forced a turnover before converting on the offensive end to give the Aces a 22-17 advantage.

Illinois State bounced back in the final minutes of the period, outscoring the Aces by a 14-6 margin to hold a 31-28 lead at the break.  Seneca Knight led all players with 13 points in the first half.

Up by a 38-35 score in the opening moments of the second half, the Redbirds posted six in a row to take their largest lead of the game at nine points.  Chris Moncrief made a pinpoint pass to Preston Phillips to open a 4-0 stretch to make it a 2-possession game at 44-39.  The Redbirds slowly took control, utilizing an 18-8 run to open a 15-point lead at 62-47 inside the final minutes.

ISU took a 21-point lead in the last minute before a late basket by Spinelli made it a final of 72-53.  The Redbirds shot 52.9% on the day while recording a 36-21 rebounding advantage.  Evansville shot 37.5% in the finale.  With the scores from the MVC on Sunday, the Aces are slated to face Indiana State in the Arch Madness opener at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday.

Trailing by a score of 9-6 heading into the bottom of the 7th, the University of Evansville softball team scored four times to earn a 10-9 walk-off victory over Bowling Green at Tri-State Orthopaedics Field at James & Dorothy Cooper Stadium on Sunday.  Evansville is now 13-1 on the season.

Taylor Howe hit a bases-clearing double to tie the game in the 7th before Marah Wood singled up the middle to bring in the game-winner.  Howe was 3-4 in the game with four RBI and three runs scored.  Jenna Nink was 2-2 with two RBI and a run while Zoe Frossard picked up two hits and an RBI.

Megan Brenton took the win in the circle as she recorded the final out in the seventh.  Mikayla Jolly gave up five runs in 1 1/3 innings before Elle Jarrett and Sydney Weatherford combined to give up an unearned run in 3 2/3 innings of work.  Erin Kleffman allowed three runs in 1 2/3.

Bowling Green opened the scoring with two runs in the top of the first.  A bases loaded walk and sacrifice fly accounted for the runs.  The Falcons tacked on three runs in the second on a 3-run shot by Peyton Dolejs.

Jess Willsey hit a 1-out triple in the third to put the Aces on the scoreboard.  Her hit brought in Kaylee Lawson, who reached on a fielder’s choice.  Taylor Howe singled up the middle to score Willsey before Alexa Davis drew a bases loaded walk to make it a 5-3 score as the game headed into the third.

After the Falcons added their sixth run of the afternoon, UE cut the deficit to just a run when Jenna Nink hit a 2-run double to left.  Hannah Hood and Davis crossed the plate on Nink’s hit.  Bowling Green go those runs right back in the top half of the sixth to solidify an 8-5 advantage.

Zoe Frossard got one of those runs right back in the bottom of the frame with an RBI single up the middle to bring in Taylor Howe, who led off with a double.  Jenna Nink and Sydney Kalonihea reached on walks before Willsey singled to load the bases with no outs in the seventh.  With one out, Taylor Howe hit a bases-clearing double to tie the game at 9-9.

Marah Wood put the finishing touches on the game, singling up the middle to bring in Howe and give the Aces a 10-9 walk-off win.  Next weekend, the Aces will be in Bowling Green, Ky. for the Hilltopper Spring Fling.

Behind four RBI in the bottom of the eighth inning from fifth-year first baseman Chase Hug, the University of Evansville baseball team exploded for nine runs in the eighth inning to rally past the visiting Eastern Michigan Eagles, 9-7, at German American Bank Field at Charles H. Braun Stadium in Evansville.

“It was great to get in the win column today,” said UE head coach Wes Carroll. “The offense came through with a big eighth inning, thanks to some great at-bats by Chase Hug. I believe that inning, and finding a way to close it out in the ninth, can give us the spark we’ve been searching for early this season.”

With the Eagles leading 4-0 going into the bottom of the eighth inning, Hug ignited the Evansville rally with a long two-run home run to right field to cut the deficit in half. It was Hug’s first home run of the season.

The next two UE batters would get hit, before EMU reliever Trevor House (0-1) would get back-to-back ground-outs for the first two outs of the frame. Fifth-year outfielder Eric Roberts would follow with an RBI single to cut the EMU lead to 4-3, before another hit-by-pitch would load the bases. Freshman pinch-hitter Drew Howard, in his first career plate appearance, would strike out, but a wild pitch on strike three allowed Howard to reach base and UE junior shortstop Simon Scherry to score from third base to tie the game at 4-4.

UE would take the lead on a bases-loaded walk by junior second baseman Kip Fougerousse, before Hug would deliver a two-run double to right field to push the UE advantage to 7-4. A wild pitch would score the eighth run of the inning for Evansville, before Scherry would produce an RBI single to extend the lead to 9-4. In all, Evansville sent 13 men to the plate in the eighth inning.

The Eagles would rally for three runs in the top of the ninth inning before junior reliever Nate Hardman recorded a pair of strikeouts and a line out with the tying run at first base to end the contest and give UE its first win of the year. Freshman reliever Max Hansmann (1-0) earned his first victory as a Purple Ace by tossing 2.0 innings of no-hit, one-run relief while walking three.

Hug led Evansville offensively by going 4-for-5 with two doubles, a home run and four runs driven in. Fougerousse, Scherry and Roberts all had hits and RBI for Evansville, while junior catcher Brendan Hord also knocked a double. Designated hitter Josh Kross went 3-for-5 with four RBI to lead Eastern Michigan.

Evansville (1-5) will go for the series victory Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. as UE will send junior LHP Donovan Schultz (0-1, 15.00 ERA) to the mound. Eastern Michigan (2-3) is expected to start RHP Adam Falinski (0-0, 0.00 ERA).

Without two of its top scorers and rebounders, the University of Evansville women's basketball team dropped a road matchup with Southern Illinois. 105-59, to close its regular season road slate on Saturday afternoon in Carbondale, Ill.

Still missing leading scorer Abby Feit, who was out for the weekend with an injury, Evansville found itself even more short-handed just one minute into the game, when redshirt junior center Barbora Tomancova exited due to an injury. Fifth-year guard Myia Clark led the Aces offensively on the day, finishing with 15 points, while freshman guard Kynidi Mason Striverson came within one point of tying her career high with 13 off the bench. Rounding-out the Aces double-figure scorers, fifth-year guard A'Niah Griffin tallied 12 points. The Salukis were led by Ashley Jones and Promise Taylor, who each went for 20 points in SIU's win. Taylor recorded a triple-double, notching 20 points, 11 boards, and 10 blocks for SIU.

From the start, Evansville was tasked with limiting an SIU offense that got into rhythm early and never lost it. The Salukis jumped-out to a 26-8 advantage in the opening quarter, but the Aces methodically worked themselves back into the contest, trailing 27-12 after the opening period.

The Salukis continued to shoot at a high-rate from the field, following a 69% field-goal percentage in the first quarter with a 52% outing in the second period that helped lift SIU to a 52-33 lead at the halftime break.

Over the course of the second half, Evansville utilized its full bench, playing 10 different players on the day with eight scoring. SIU would finish the game shooting 62.5% (45-72) from the field, helping the Salukis secure the 105-59 win.

Evansville returns to Meeks Family Fieldhouse for the final two games of the regular season on Thursday, March 2 and Saturday, March 4 against Bradley and Illinois State, respectively.

Pitching was the story in the opener before a come-from-behind effort resulted in another win on Saturday for the University of Evansville softball team.  After defeating Bowling Green by a 2-0 final, the Purple Aces took a 5-4 win over Purdue Fort Wayne in the second contest of the day.

Game One – UE 2, Bowling Green 0

Jenna Nink hit a 2-run home run in the bottom of the second inning to lead the Purple Aces to a 2-0 shutout over Bowling Green to open the day.  Evansville’s other hit came in the third when Alexa Davis hit a 2-out double.

Bowling Green accumulated three hits on the day but Erin Kleffman and Sydney Weatherford got things taken care of in the circle.  Kleffman earned her fourth victory of the season tossing four frames and giving up three hits.  Weatherford did not allow a hit or walk in three innings.

Game Two – UE 5, Purdue Fort Wayne 4 (8)

Jess Willsey hit a 2-run game-winning home run in the eighth inning to lead the Aces to a 5-4 win over the Mastodons in eight innings.  Kaylee Lawson was a perfect 3-3 in the game while Willsey recorded two hits.  The duo accumulated for five of Evansville’s eight hits in the game.

Purdue Fort Wayne plated two runs in the top of the first with Evansville getting on the board with a run in the bottom of the third.  With two outs, Alexa Davis walked and proceeded to steal second.  Hannah Hood delivered an RBI double to cut the deficit in half.   Another run crossed the plate in the fourth when a Lawson double brought in pinch runner Dori Brown to tie the game.  Brown pinch ran for Jenna Nink, who hit a leadoff single.

The Mastodons retook the lead with a run in the top of the sixth but Evansville had another response.  Nink drew a leadoff walk and scored on another Lawson RBI double.  In extra innings, Purdue Fort Wayne scored one run but when it was the Aces turn, freshman Jess Willsey had the answer.  With one out, she drilled a 2-run game-winner to left center to seal the 5-4 win.

Elle Jarrett made the start, allowing two runs in two innings.  Paige McAllister scattered two hits in three innings before Megan Brenton went the final three frames.  She earned her third win of the season.  UE completes the weekend on Sunday with a 12:30 p.m. game against Bowling Green.

Mallory Russell and Kate Petrova led the University of Evansville women’s golf team in the opening day of the Bright Creek Women’s Invite at Bright’s Creek Club.

Russell opened the day with an 83 before carding a 74 in round two.  Her second-round total was the lowest for the team on Saturday.  Her score is a 157.  Full individual and team standings are not available at this time.

Petrova completed Saturday’s 36 holes just one behind Russell.  Rounds of 80 and 78 put her at a 158.  Allison Enchelmayer is third for the team with a 161.  After opening the day with an 81, she posted an 80 in the second 18 holes.

Magdalena Borisova recorded rounds of 84 and 80 to complete the day with a 164 while Carly Frazier shot an 83 and 86 to post a 169 entering Sunday’s round.  Destynie Sheridan played as an individual and finished with a 168.  Her rounds finished at a 79 and 89.

Regular season action comes to a close on Sunday when the University of Evansville men's basketball team travels to Illinois State.  Tip is set for 2 p.m. CT with the Purple Aces Radio Network and ESPN+ having the coverage.

The visiting Eastern Michigan baseball team scored two two-out runs in the top of the fifth inning Friday to grab a lead it would never lose, as the Eagles rallied for a 5-2 victory over the University of Evansville Purple Aces at German American Bank Field at Charles H. Braun Stadium in Evansville.

Reigning Mid-American Conference Player of the Year Matt Kirk produced a two-out RBI double to the wall in right-center field in the fifth inning to tie the score at 2-2 for Eastern Michigan. He then scored on a two-out single to right by first baseman Darren Kraft to give EMU a 3-2 lead. The Eagles would add a two-run home run in the eighth inning by DH Josh Kross, before holding off a late UE rally in the ninth inning to win.

“I just felt like it was an uninspired performance today by our offense,” said UE head coach Wes Carroll. “I thought that Nick Smith pitched pretty well for us today, and I thought that our defense made some good plays, but we needed some guys to step up offensively for us, and we really didn’t have that outside of Ben Stuart, who had a great game. But, credit their two pitchers. I thought they did a tremendous job of controlling at-bats. We just have to try and bounce back tomorrow.”

Stuart was the lone bright spot on Friday for Evansville offensively, as he produced two of UE’s three hits, and drove in UE’s first run of the contest with a two-out RBI single in the second inning. Kirk and Kross both had two-hit games for Eastern Michigan.

Junior RHP Nick Smith (0-2) was the tough-luck loser for Evansville, as he scattered three runs on five hits in 5.0 innings of work, while striking out six. Reliever Luke Russo (1-0) earned the win for EMU by tossing 4.1 innings of scoreless, hitless relief, while striking out six. He did have to escape a ninth-inning jam, as he walked the first two hitters of the inning to bring the tying run to home plate, but he was able to record back-to-back strikeouts and a ground out to end the contest.

The two teams will continue the series on Saturday afternoon with a 2 p.m. contest that can be seen live on ESPN3. Senior Tyler Denu (0-0, 5.79 ERA) will take the mound for Evansville (0-5), trying to get the Aces their first win of 2023. Eastern Michigan (2-2) has not announced a starter yet for Saturday’s contest.

Two more wins were added to the season tally on Friday with the University of Evansville softball team opening the day with a 3-2 win over Purdue Fort Wayne before overcoming a 9-run deficit to defeat the University of St. Thomas by a 12-9 final in the evening.

Game One – UE 3, PFW 2

Hannah Hood hit a 2-run single in the bottom of the sixth to lift the Purple Aces to a 3-2 win over Purdue Fort Wayne.

Taylor Howe doubled to left to open the third inning and moved to third on a passed ball.  With two outs, she stole home to open the scoring.  Her heads-up baserunning kept the defense off guard to give UE the lead.  Purdue Fort Wayne countered with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth.

With her team trailing by a 2-1 score in the bottom of the sixth, Hannah Hood put her team back in front.  Marah Wood belted a 1-out double before Alexa Davis reached on a walk.  With the duo at second and third, Hood delivered a single to left center to put the Aces on top, 3-2.

Megan Brenton entered the game in the top of the 7th and retired the Mastodons to earn the save while finishing off the 3-2 win.  Mikayla Jolly allowed two unearned runs on one hit in six frames on the way to her third win of the season.

Game Two – UE 12, St .Thomas 9

After trailing St. Thomas by a 9-0 score after the first inning, the Purple Aces scored 12 unanswered runs to wrap up the day with a 12-9 victory.

St. Thomas opened the game with a 9-run top of the first.  Despite the large deficit, UE worked its way back into the fold.  The offense got on the board with three runs in the bottom of the second.  Callie Meinel recorded the first RBI of her career while Zoe Frossard added a 2-RBI double.

Another run crossed the plate in the fourth on a Taylor Howe RBI knock before UE made it a 9-7 game in the fifth.  A groundout by Hannah Hood scored Marah Wood and Lacey Smith followed with an RBI triple.  Jenna Nink doubled to left center to cut the deficit to just a pair heading into the sixth.

Evansville completed the comeback in the sixth.  The offense drew four consecutive bases-loaded walks to take its first lead of the game.  Hood, Smith, Nink and Meinel picked up the walks to make it an 11-9 game.  Howe was later hit by a pitch to bring in the 12th run.

Megan Brenton earned her second save of the day with a scoreless 7th inning to cap off the win.  Elle Jarrett tossed two scoreless innings on the way to her first collegiate win.  Paige McAllister went 3 2/3 innings of relief and gave up two unearned runs.  Evansville finished the night with 14 hits.  Howe and Wood recorded three apiece.  Hood and Smith each scored three times.  On Saturday, UE faces Bowling Green at 12:30 p.m. before taking on Purdue Fort Wayne at 3 p.m.
