* University of Evansville Theatre Presents Glimpses: an Evening with Matt Williams '73

The University of Evansville Department of Theatre is proud to announce that alumnus Matt Williams ’73, will be returning to campus for GLIMPSES: An Evening with Matt Williams, at 7:30p.m., on Saturday, January 21, 2023.

UE Theatre alumnus and an Evansville native, Matt is best known as the Creator and Executive Producer of the hit series ROSEANNE and the Co-Creator and Executive Producer of HOME IMPROVEMENT, one of the most successful programs in television history. Williams started his television career when he joined THE COSBY SHOW during its premiere season and worked as a Writer/Producer on the show for three subsequent seasons. He also Co-created the series A DIFFERENT WORLD. Matt’s work was nominated for Emmy and Humanitas Awards and won a Peabody Award for Outstanding Achievement in Television Writing.

In addition to his many credits, Matt is a founding board member of The New Harmony Project and the Cherry Lane Theatre. Matt is currently an Adjunct Associate Professor at Columbia University School of the Arts Theatre Program. He lives in New York with his wife, actress Angelina Fiordellisi, the Executive Director of the Cherry Lane Theatre.

Williams will be returning to campus to promote his upcoming book titled Glimpses, a new collection of stories of hope, humanity, and humor—his own. During a hardscrabble childhood, Matt heard the voice of a loving, generous Spirit who would be his guide for the rest of his life. This Spirit would lead him into the glamorous realms of New York and Hollywood’s entertainment industry and show him, in encounters both delightful and heartwarming, that God can be found everywhere—especially where you least expect Her. This book presents readers with a compelling provocation—not only to see a glimpse of God in those around us, no matter the circumstances, but to be a glimpse of God for those who also need hope. Within the pages of this memoir is the very real truth: We can all be a light in the darkness.

Tickets for this event can be purchased online at uealumnionline.com/mattwilliams. Tickets are $75, which include your seat in the John David Lutz Theatre Lab and a post-show reception, with Matt, in the Matt Williams Lobby of Shanklin Theatre. Livestream tickets to the reading are available for $25. If you have any questions, please call 812.488.2744.

* Ace CARE Van Needs Volunteers

Ace CARE is a student-run organization that provides free physical therapy services to the uninsured and underinsured people of the Evansville community. This wonderful program allows students from the physical therapy, physician assistant, athletic training, and health science undergraduate degrees to get hands-on practice with patients while also providing health care to individuals who would not receive it otherwise!

Ace CARE has the amazing ability to provide a vulnerable community with transportation to and from their sessions on campus through the use of a van. There are even one to two physical therapy students riding along throughout the routes to help safely transfer patients into and out of the van. Currently, there is a need for more volunteers to donate their time, and help drive the van on Tuesday nights from 4 - 7:30pm. If you are interested or have any questions, please reach out to Dr. Schwartzkopf-Phifer at ks148@evansville.edu.

Come be a part of an organization that truly is changing lives and making the Evansville community a better place!

* Men's basketball welcomes Valparaiso on Saturday

In search of its first Missouri Valley Conference victory of the season, the University of Evansville men’s basketball team welcomes Valparaiso to the Ford Center on Saturday afternoon.  Tip is set for 3 p.m. CT with the Purple Aces Radio Network and ESPN+ having the coverage.

Setting the Scene
- UE head coach David Ragland was an assistant on Matt Lottich’s Valpo staff for two seasons (2016-17 and 2017-18)
- Both sitting at 0-7 in Valley play, the Purple Aces and Beacons are looking to break through for their first conference triumph
- UE has fallen by an average of 23.6 points per game in its seven MVC games
- The closest match-up came on Jan. 7 when the Aces dropped a 69-61 home game to Illinois State

Last Time Out
- After staying within striking distance in the first half of Wednesday’s game at Bradley, a huge run to open the second half doomed the Aces in a 91-46 loss
- Up 46-30 at halftime, Bradley outscored UE by a 41-5 margin in the opening 17 minutes of the second half
- Kenny Strawbridge Jr. registered a team-high 13 points while Marvin Coleman II added 11

The Mark of Consistency
- Kenny Strawbridge Jr. scored 13 points at Bradley and has chipped in at least 8 points in 17 out of 18 games
- He continues to lead the Aces while sitting 8th in the MVC with his season average of 16.0 points per game
- Finishing with a game-high 22 points at Indiana State, he reached the 20-point mark for the 7th time this season
- In the Dec. 21 game against Bellarmine, Strawbridge was held scoreless in the opening half but rebounded with 22 points in the final 20 minutes

Raising the Bar
- Yacine Toumi has hauled in at least five rebounds in six straight contests while raising his season average from 5.1 to 5.8 per game
- His top tally of 11 came in the win over Bellarmine while he added 9 at Bradley to solidify his mark of 5.8/game, which is tied for 15th in the Valley
- He looks to get back on track with his offense as he is shooting just 20.0% (7/35) over the last three games while averaging 5.0 points

Keep on Rolling
- Over his last eight games, Marvin Coleman II is averaging 14.6 points per game while raising his season average from 5.4 points to 9.5
- He scored a career-best 22 points at Missouri State on Jan. 4 and followed that with 16 points against Illinois State
- Coleman reached double figures just once in the first 10 games before doing so in seven of the last eight outings
- His effort at Missouri State bested his old record of 18 points, which came earlier this season against Campbell

Scouting the Opponent
- Valparaiso heads to the Ford Center for Saturday’s game with a 6-12 record while dropping their first seven league contests
- On Tuesday, the Beacons lost a home contest to Belmont by a final of 74-59
- Ben Krikke paces Valpo with a season scoring average of 17.8 points per game along with his rebounding tally of 5.9 per contest
- Kobe King is second on the team with a mark of 16.6 points while Quinton Green checks in at 10.5 PPG
- Nick Edwards paces the team with a season total of 86 assists and 26 steals

* UE Track & Field Returns To Action At Commodore Challenge

The University of Evansville track and field teams will get back to action this weekend, as the Purple Aces will take part in the two-day Commodore Challenge hosted by Vanderbilt University at the Vanderbilt Multipurpose Facility in Nashville, Tennessee.  The meet will begin Friday afternoon at 1 p.m. and continue on Saturday at 11 a.m., with both days being available live on the SEC Network+.

The Commodore Challenge will feature competitors for 17 different schools, including 13 Division I institutions.  A stacked Division I field includes student-athletes from Alabama, Austin Peay, Belmont, Evansville, Indiana, Lipscomb, Lindenwood, Middle Tennessee State, Murray State, Ole Miss, Tennessee Tech, Vanderbilt, and Western Kentucky.

This weekend will mark UE’s first meet since opening the 2022-23 indoor season on December 3 at both the Commonwealth College Opener in Louisville, Kentucky and the Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener in Boston, Massachusetts.  Senior Zach Dove (Princeton, Ind./Princeton Community) and graduate student Antonia Lamond (Nutley, N.J./Paramus Catholic) combined to break three indoor throwing records to lead the way for UE at the Commonwealth Opener.  Meanwhile, graduate student Melanie Helder (Hudsonville, Mich./Hudsonville) came within 11 seconds of breaking the UE school record in the 3,000-meters at the Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener.

In addition to the Commodore Challenge being seen live on the SEC Network+, live meet results can also be found on-line at https://live.pttiming.com/?mid=5359.  This weekend’s competition will be the first of five weeks of indoor competition for UE, before the Purple Aces take part in the 2023 Missouri Valley Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships on February 26-27 in Chicago, Illinois.
