54 Miles to Social Change - now through January 16, 2023

During the Civil Rights March of 1965, activists gathered in Selma, Alabama, to complete a 54-mile trek to the state capital in Montgomery. In recognition of this historical event, UE invites everyone to participate in 54 Miles to Social Change, a virtual march that raises awareness for social injustice in the United States.

Participants can complete the first 53 miles by walking, running, biking, or even swimming. You may register individually or in teams, and participants can also purchase a T-shirt to celebrate the march. At 11:15 a.m. on the MLK Day of Service, we will complete the 54th mile together.

All proceeds will go directly towards Journey to Justice Scholarships for students expressing a financial need. To donate, visit UE Alumni Online.

Faith-Based Service – 9:00 a.m.
The MLK Day of Service will begin with a faith-based service in Neu Chapel.

Rally – 10:30 a.m.
We will hold a rally in Meeks Family Fieldhouse, located inside Carson Center. The rally will recap the significance of a day on, not off, and include remarks from Christopher M. Symbolic March – 11:15 a.m.
After the rally, UE invites everyone to complete the 54th Mile to Social Change together. The march will begin at Meeks Family Fieldhouse and along nearby streets before returning to campus at Ridgway University Center. Public Safety will have streets blocked off to safely complete the march, which should conclude by 11:45 a.m.

MLK Day of Service Luncheon and Lectureship – 12:00 p.m.
Held in Eykamp Hall on the second floor of Ridgway University Center, the MLK Day of Service Luncheon will be an opportunity for community members to join together in fellowship. The time will be filled with performances, student speakers, award presentations, and our featured keynote speaker.

Each year, the Martin Luther King Lectureship is made possible by the generous support of William G. and Rose M. Mays. The 2023 lectureship will feature keynote speaker Chris Emdin.

Chris Emdin is the Robert A. Naslund Endowed Chair in Curriculum Theory and Professor of Education at the University of Southern California. There, he also serves as Director of Youth Engagement and Community Partnerships at the USC Race and Equity Center. * Coleman has career game against Bears

Marvin Coleman II set his career mark with 22 points in Wednesday’s game that saw the University of Evansville men’s basketball team fall to Missouri State by a final of 85-62 inside Great Southern Bank Arena.

Coleman was 9-of-15 from the floor while connecting on 3 of his 4 outside attempts.  He also led the squad with 8 rebounds.  Kenny Strawbridge Jr. wrapped up the night with 18 points.  A solid effort from the line saw him hit 7 of his 9 tries.  Four Bears registered double figures with Chance Moore scoring a team-best 19.  Donovan Clay added 17 while Jonathan Mogbo and Dalen Ridgnal scored 14 apiece.  Mogbo picked up a double-double, adding a game-high 10 rebounds.

“Missouri State is an excellent defensive team and we knew that would be a challenge heading into the game,” Evansville head coach David Ragland exclaimed.  “That is how they get going with their defense leading to offense.  They controlled the pace from the start.”

Marvin Coleman II tied the game at 2-2 before the Bears would score five in a row to go up 7-2.  Gage Bobe knocked down a triple to cut the lead to a pair while MSU countered with five in a row as they took a 12-5 edge.  Coleman made it a 2-for-2 start from outside as his basket cut Bears lead to 12-8.

As the first half approached its midway point, the Bears pushed their advantage to double figures.  An 8-0 run expanded their edge to 22-10 at the 11:48 mark before a Gabe Spinelli free throw ended the run.  Missouri State held the double figure lead over the remainder of the period as they stretched it to a 39-23 game with 64 ticks on the clock.  They settled for a 40-25 halftime lead with Jonathan Mogbo posting 11 points, 6 boards and 4 steals in the half.  Coleman paced UE with 10 points.

Things continued to go the Bears way in the second half.  With 9:23 remaining in the game their lead would reach a game-high of 26 points (66-40) before UE closed slightly in the final minutes to make it an 85-62 final.

Both teams shot well with the Bears shooting 49.2% and the Purple Aces checking in at 48.9%.  The advantage for MSU was higher in the rebounding tally with the final coming in at 41-24.

Another weekend home game is on tap when the Aces welcome Illinois State to the Ford Center.  Tip on Saturday is set for 1 p.m.

* Aces go on the road for the first time in MVC play to face Valpo Thursday

For the first time in MVC play, the University of Evansville women's basketball team hits the road, facing Valparaiso at 6 PM (CT) on Thursday evening in Valparaiso, Ind.

Thursday represents the 24th meeting between the Aces and Beacons all-time with Valparaiso owning a 14-9 advantage in the series. The last time the two sides met, Evansville and Valpo battled in an intense overtime contest that saw the Beacons edge out a 75-70 win last season.

Valparaiso brings a 2-8 overall record into the Thursday clash, falling in both of its opening MVC duels last week to Belmont and Murray State. The Beacons are powered by a trio of double-digit scorers with senior Olivia Brown leading the way with 12.4 points per game. Valpo looks to snap an eight-game losing streak after starting the year 2-0 with wins over Central Michigan and Southern Miss.

Evansville comes into the road weekend following a pair of hard-fought battles last weekend against SIU and Missouri State. In the opening two games of Valley action, the Aces were led by fifth-year guard Myia Clark, who averaged 21.5 points per game and tied a season-high with 25 points against SIU. Battling through an injury, senior guard/forward Abby Feit tallied nine points a piece in each of the weekend's contests, coming up just one point and rebound shy of a double-double facing one of the nation's best rebounding teams in Missouri State.

This weekend will again serve as a homecoming of sorts for head coach Robyn Scherr-Wells, who grew up in Chicago and got her start as a collegiate head coach in the Windy City. Scherr-Wells began her head coaching career with a stint at Roosevelt in the heart of downtown Chicago, leading the Lakers to top five ranking, conference championships, and an appearance in the NAIA National Championship.
