This service will include bagpipes by Tad Dickel, PhD; an invocation and message from Rev. Andy Payton, university chaplain; and the reading of the names and ringing of the peace bell for each victim. Afterwards, there will be a reception with hot drinks and refreshments in the Class of 1959 Gallery. Basketball game footage from the 1977 team, which has never been shown before, will also be on display.

Free off-site paper shredding by Piranha Mobile Shredding will return to campus once again December 8 (Reading Study Day) from 10:00 a.m. - 1:00p.m. All UE students, faculty, staff, and alumni can take advantage of this free service by bringing paper to the Piranha truck in Koch Center for Engineering and Science parking lot. Paper will be shredded off-site. We will place bins along the parking lot to allow each person to empty their own material.

So, if mounds of paper are taking over your office, home, or room, this is the time to gather those old files, receipts, cancelled checks, tax forms, etc. No need to take out the staples or paper clips. Avoid identity theft by having confidential information permanently destroyed.

The Department of Education has asked universities to communicate information about the government’s Affordable Connectivity Program which provides eligible households (including Pell Grant households) a discount of up to $30 per month toward internet service and up to $75 per month for households on qualifying Tribal lands. On December 13, 1977, a tragic plane crash took the lives of 29 members from both the UE community and the flight crew. We will hold both a daytime and evening service on Tuesday, December 13 to mark the 45th annivesary of this fateful evening. Until then, we encourage you to read each day about those who perished in the crash.

Kevin Kingston
Kevin Kingston was a senior from Eldorado, Illinois. He transferred to UE from John A. Logan Junior College in Illinois and earned a scholarship for the 1977-1978 season. As a senior in high school he averaged 15 points and 7 assists during his senior year. On top of basketball, he was also the leading scorer on the football team.

John Ed Washington
John Ed Washington was a senior physical education major from Indianapolis, Indiana. He graduated from Tech High School in Indianapolis. He was considered a swingman playing both guard and forward. He drew in the toughest defensive assignments and was just one of two seniors who scored 15.4 points per game while a junior.

Marion Anthony "Tony" Winburn
Tony Winburn was a senior banking and finance major from Jeffersonville, Indiana. He was always a fan favorite as he showed hustle and aggressive play as a guard. He was third on the team as a junior in steals and scored 5.4 points per game during his junior year. He transferred to UE after his freshman year.

University of Evansville senior Zach Dove (Princeton, Ind./Princeton Community) and graduate student Antonia Lamond (Nutley N.J./Paramus Catholic) combined to break three UE indoor Track & Field throwing records on Saturday, as the Purple Aces opened the indoor track season at two different meets.

Dove broke the indoor weight throw record with a toss of 17.68 meters (58’0.25”) to beat his own mark by over a meter and place sixth in the weight throw at the Commonwealth College Opener in Louisville, Kentucky. Lamond broke school records in both the women’s weight throw (12.65 meters | 41’6”) and women’s shot put (9.62 meters | 31’6.75”) in her first meet as a Purple Ace, after transferring from High Point University in the off-season.

On the track, UE was represented at both the Commonwealth College Opener and Boston University’s Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener on Saturday. In Boston, graduate student Melanie Helder (Hudsonville, Mich./Hudsonville) raced in a stacked field in the women’s 3,000-meters and came within 11 seconds of Anna Lowry’s school record with a time of 10:02.80. The top eight finishers in the race were in the top 35 of the most recent NCAA Division I Cross Country National Championship, and Helder’s time would have easily won the 3,000-meter race at the Commonwealth College Opener in a meet which included student-athletes from such schools as Louisville, Kentucky, and Texas.

In Louisville, senior Giovanni Purser posted UE’s top time in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.16 seconds to place 26th in the main prelims. Freshmen Jose Ocampo and Jude Nguyen posted 60 times of 7.39 and 7.46 to place 14th and 18th, respectively, in the men’s Q Final Prelims, while sophomore Denzel Lasam placed 22nd in a time of 7.54. Ocampo and Nguyen went back-to-back in the 300-meter race with times of 38.47 and 38.70. Lasam also placed ninth in the triple jump with a mark of 13.38 meters (43’10.75”)

On the women’s side, senior Mariah Schaefer placed seventh in the 60-meters Q Final prelims with a time of 8.25. Fifth-year athlete Skylar Tucker posted a time of 44.83 in the women’s 300-meters, while also placing 14th in the long jump with a leap of 4.97 meters (16’3.75”). Schaefer placed right behind Tucker in the long jump with a leap of 4.92 meters (16’1.75”) in her first collegiate long jump competition.

Throwing-wise, Dove placed sixth in the weight throw with his school-record toss, while trailing only throwers from Louisville and Kentucky. He also placed fifth in the shot put with a toss of 14.49 meters (47’6.5”). Freshman Robert Hahn also placed 21st in the shot put with a throw of 11.10 meters (36’5”). Lamond, meanwhile, placed 11th in the weight throw and 19th in the shot put with her school-record marks.

Evansville will return to action next on January 13-14 when the Purple Aces take part in the Commodore Challenge in Nashville, Tennessee.

University of Evansville junior Alon Baer (Gesher HaZiv, Israel) posted another ‘B Final’ qualifying time in the 200-Meter Breaststroke on Saturday morning, and sophomores Daniel Santos Lopez (Madrid, Spain) and Benjamin Hasanovic (Innsbruck, Austria) posted personal-best marks in a 50-Meter Freestyle time trial at the Toyota U.S. Open Championships being held at the Greensboro Aquatic Center in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Baer, who placed 15th out of 68 swimmers in the 100-Meter Breaststroke on Friday night, posted his second ‘B Final’ time at the Toyota U.S. Open Championships with a mark of 2:18.91 in the 200-Meter Breaststroke. Baer dominated his heat, winning by nearly seven seconds, as he posted the 13th-best time in the preliminary round out of 50 competitors. Unfortunately, due to flight restrictions for the UE contingent, Baer was unable to compete in Saturday night’s finals.

“What a tremendous swim by Alon,” said UE head swimming and diving coach Stuart Wilson. “He had a great start, and really attacked his swim, even though he was able to create a comfortable lead fairly early on in the race. I was really proud of his effort today.”

Baer wasn’t the only Purple Ace to have a strong showing on Saturday, as both Santos Lopez and Hasanovic recorded personal-best marks in a time trial for the 50-Meter Freestyle. Hasanovic posted a time of 23.97, while Santos Lopez finished at 24.01. Hasanovic’s time was nearly three-quarters of a second faster than his previous-best time, while Santos Lopez shaved 0.06 seconds off his best mark.

“Overall, I am extremely proud of all three men for their efforts this weekend,” said Wilson. “I think this was a tremendous experience to compete against some of the world’s best, and I think that all three men really stepped up to the opportunity. This should help all three come championship season in March.”

The UE swimming team will take the next month off for training and the holidays, before returning to action next on January 14 for a “Senior Day” meet against Missouri State, UIC, and Bellarmine at the Deaconess Aquatic Center in Evansville. The UE diving team, meanwhile, will be back in action next on Thursday, December 8 with a meet at IUPUI.

Down by 18 points at halftime, the University of Evansville men’s basketball team closed the gap to six points before Northern Iowa fended off the challenge to take a 72-55 win on Saturday at the McLeod Center.

Trailing by an 18-4 margin to open the game, UE went to halftime trailing 38-20 but stormed back in the second half.  Evansville cut the deficit to as few as six tallies in the second half before Northern Iowa finished with the win.  The Purple Aces outscored the Panthers by a 35-34 margin in the second half.

“UNI came out on fire and hit their first six shots, they were ready to go and hit some good shots,” Aces head coach David Ragland said.  “We responded very well but we have to be ready to go from the tip.  At halftime, we made some adjustments to get us in better positions and it helped us.”

Scoring 17 points, Kenny Strawbridge Jr. led the Purple Aces on the scoresheet.  He was 6-of-15 from the field while tallying five rebounds.  Antoine Smith Jr. scored 10 points and grabbed five boards.  Marvin Coleman II paced the team with seven caroms.  The leading scorer in the contest was Bowen Born of UNI.  He scored 29 points, including 22 in the first half alone.  He was 10-of-21 from the field and drained five 3-pointers.  Tytan Anderson scored 19 while posting a game-high nine rebounds.

Converting their opening six field goal attempts, the Panthers jumped out to a 16-4 lead in the first three minutes of the game.  Sekou Kalle got the Aces on the board to tie it at 2-2 before UNI heated up from outside with four triples finding the bottom of the net.  The Panthers pushed the lead to 18-4 to open the game with Kenny Strawbridge Jr. hitting a jumper to halt the run.

Inside of the 7-minute mark of the first half, Strawbridge hit a triple and Marvin Coleman II followed with a layup that got Evansville within single digits (27-18), but the final minutes of the period saw UNI outscore the Aces by an 11-2 margin to lead 38-20 at halftime.  Bowen Born recorded 22 points in the first half.

Gage Bobe opened the scoring in the second half with a triple and Coleman followed with a basket as the Aces scored the first five points of the second half.  Evansville connected on five of its first seven attempts of the second half to open on a 13-1 run.  Bobe’s second 3-pointer of the period cut the deficit to 39-33.  The defense for UE held the Panthers to 0-for-8 to open the half.

Just as fast as UE rallied, Northern Iowa countered with seven in a row to retake a 13-point lead.  After missing their first eight attempts of the period, the Panthers hit four in a row.  Up 52-41, Northern Iowa drained three consecutive triples to take their largest lead of 20 points with 9:25 showing on the clock.

UNI extended its lead to 21 points (65-44) but the Aces continued to fight back.  Antoine Smith Jr. hit a triple in a 7-0 stretch but the deficit was too much to overcome with the Panthers completing the game with the 72-55 victory.  UNI outshot the Aces by a 45.2%-37.3% margin for the game while totaling 42 rebounds to UE’s 31.

UE is back home Wednesday for a non-conference game against Campbell.  Tip is set for 7 p.m. inside the Ford Center.

Pulling away in the second half, the University of Evansville women's basketball team picked-up its second road victory of the season, 75-65, over Morehead State on Friday evening in Morehead, Ky.

For the second-time this year, senior guard/forward Abby Feit scored 27 points, narrowly missing a double-double with eight boards in the win. Capturing a second-straight double-double, redshirt junior Barbora Tomancova tallied 11 points and 12 boards on the night, while fifth-year guard Myia Clark also finished in double-figures with 12 points. The Eagles were led by Veronica Charles, who finished with 19 points to pace Morehead State.

Much like Saturday's matchup with Miami (Ohio), it took a minute or two for the Aces to settle into the contest. Morehead State grabbed an early lead at 11-7, but Evansville battled back with the help of Tomancova. The Eagles lead would grow as large as six in the first quarter, but Tomancova continued to assert herself in the post, getting to the line to score eight of UE's first 12 points. Following Tomancova's early strong form, Feit stepped up, going on a personal 8-0 run to close the opening period and giving Evansville the 19-18 lead after 10 minutes of play.

The lead stayed with the Aces for much of the second period before the home side battled back to retake the lead inside the final four minutes of the half. As the opening half waned, Feit again went on her own run, scoring the last six points of the half to give UE a four-point lead going to the half.

Out of the break, Evansville continued to hold its lead, but Morehead State had another challenge in it. After the Eagles came back to tie the game at 36 with 7:44 left in the third, the Aces used a key stretch to take the lead and open up their advantage. A 13-2 Evansville run gave the Aces a double-digit lead, spurred by triples from A'Niah Griffin and Kynidi Mason Striverson. In all, the Aces out-scored Morehead State 25-12 in the third period as UE held a 59-42 lead.

The Eagles pushed UE one final time, cutting the Aces advantage as low as six with 4:10 left in the game. Evansville responded immediately with a bucket of its own as Newman hit a layup to answer the Eagles. Over the final minutes, the Aces got another important three from Feit and converted at the free-throw line to secure the 10-point victory.

Evansville gets nearly a week to. recoup before heading back on the road for a matchup with Bellarmine at 5:30 PM (CT) on Thursday, December 8 in Louisville, Ky.

University of Evansville junior Alon Baer (Gesher HaZiv, Israel) finished seventh in a closely-contested ‘B Final’ in the men’s 100-Meter Breaststroke on Friday at the Toyota U.S. Open Championships being held at the Greensboro Aquatic Center in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Baer touched the wall with a time of 1:03.55 in a ‘B Final’ which saw the entire field separated by less than half a body-length for much of the race. He finished just over a second behind Australian Angus Menzies, who won the final in a time of 1:02.30.

Baer qualified for Friday night’s final by winning his heat – heat three – of the preliminary round competition in the 100 Breaststroke with a time of 1:03.10. Baer charged hard in the final 25 meters to pull away from an even field and win the heat by 0.76 seconds. His time of 1:03.10 ranked 14th-fastest out of 68 competitors in the 100 Breast.

Baer’s ‘B Final’ qualification capped a strong morning at the Toyota U.S. Open Championships from three Purple Aces.

Sophomore Daniel Santos Lopez (Madrid, Spain) finished second in heat one of the men’s 100-Meter Butterfly with a time of 56.73 to drop over two seconds off of his personal-best mark. Fellow sophomore Benjamin Hasanovic (Innsbruck, Austria) also placed sixth in heat five of the men’s 100-Meter Breaststroke with a time of 1:06.36. The Toyota U.S. Open Championships features hundreds of athletes from around the world, including various Olympians and National Team members.

“I was extremely proud of all three men,” said UE head swimming and diving coach Stuart Wilson. “We had some really good swims this morning, and I am really proud of the job that Alon did tonight in the ‘B Final.’ It was a good swim, and it sets him up well for the 200 Breaststroke tomorrow.

“All three represented our program well today. It is a great experience for all three, and will only help them prepare for the championship meet in March.”

Baer will return to the pool on Saturday morning, as he will compete in the men’s 200-Meter Breaststroke event. Preliminary round swims will begin at 8 a.m. central time on Saturday, with the meet order featuring the 200 Back, 100 Free, 200 Breast and 200 Fly. Finals for each event will take place beginning at 5 p.m. central time. Action in both the preliminary rounds and finals can be seen live on usaswimming.org/watch.

In its final Missouri Valley Conference game before Christmas, the University of Evansville men’s basketball team travels to Cedar Falls for a game on Saturday at Northern Iowa.  Tip is set for 1 p.m. CT with the Purple Aces Radio Network and ESPN+ having the coverage.

- Scoring 25 points against Fairfield, Kenny Strawrbridge Jr. reached the 20-point mark for the fifth time this season
- His top scoring output of the season saw him register 25 points on 11-of-18 shooting
- Strawbridge’s season average of 16.8 points per game puts him 9th in the MVC
- Over the last five games, he is averaging 18.0 points while shooting an 45.8% (33-for-72) from the field
- He has attempted at least 12 shots in eight of the nine games while scoring at least 8 points in each contest

Perfect Score
- Antoine Smith Jr. hit all five of his field goal tries, including two from outside, to finish with a team-high 12 points against the Salukis
- It was his top scoring total of the season, passing his high of 11, which came against Saint Louis and South Alabama
- He bumped his season average to 6.6 points per game

University of Evansville head men’s basketball coach David Ragland has announced a mutual parting of ways with guard Blaise Beauchamp.

“After speaking with his family, Blaise and I came to the conclusion that it was in his best interest to pursue future opportunities outside of the University of Evansville,” Ragland said.  “We fully support this decision and wish him nothing but the best moving forward.”
