* Olmsted Landscape Renewal

Beginning the week of October 24, a transformation of the exterior landscape areas of Olmsted Hall will take place. Crews have already begun the process, that will include replacement of much of the existing landscape. This upgrade will greatly improve the appearance of the one building all visitors and potential student families frequent, through multiple seasons of color while allowing the beauty of this iconic building to shine.

Project contractors have been advised to yield to all pedestrians while keeping the sidewalks open. The project is anticipated to take approximately two weeks.

Renderings of the front and back door portions of the project are displayed here for all to view. We look forward to seeing the progress and improvement this project brings to Olmsted Hall!

* "Hopeless Resistance in Eastern Europe" is topic of Fiddick Lecture

Distinguished Indiana University Historian Padraic Kenney to deliver 2022 Fiddick Lecture on "Why Hopeless Resistance Matters. Lessons from Eastern Europe”

The University of Evansville’s Department of History, Politics, and Social Change is proud to welcome Dr Padraic Kenney for the 20th annual Thomas C. Fiddick Memorial Lecture. The Lecture will be in Eykamp Hall in the Ridgway University Center at UE on Friday November 4 at 7pm. The event is free and open to the public.

In the decades from 1974 to 2014, dozens of opposition movements around the world brought about real political change. But in the more recent past, resistance in Russia, Iran, Hong Kong and elsewhere seems to have had little effect. In this lecture, Professor Padraic Kenney will draw insights from successful revolutionary movements in Eastern Europe, especially in the 1980s, but also more recent social mobilization in Ukraine, to consider what political resistance is and why it can work. At the same time, though, he will consider how conditions have become less conducive to the success of resistance.

Padraic Kenney is a Professor of both History and International Studies at Indiana University, where he teaches courses on global democracy movements and revolutions, communism, and Polish and Eastern European History. He is the author of six books, including Dance in Chains: Political Imprisonment in the Modern World (Oxford, 2017) and A Carnival of Revolution: Central Europe, 1989 (Princeton, 2002). In 2016, he was President of the Association for Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies (ASEEES). Before coming to Indiana University in 2007, he taught at the University of Colorado. He was educated at Harvard University, the University of Toronto, and the University of Michigan.

* UE Cross Country Heads To MVC Championships Friday

The University of Evansville cross country teams began their 2022 season in Terre Haute, Indiana.  Now, just over a month later, the Purple Aces will return to Terre Haute to take part in the biggest meet of the year, as UE will take part in the annual Missouri Valley Conference Championships at the LaVern Gibson Cross Country Course in Terre Haute.

The women’s 6-K race will kick off the championship meet at 8 a.m. central time, followed by the men’s 8-K race at 9 a.m. central.  Both races can be seen live on ESPN+.

“With any championship meet, the goal is always to bring your best when it is required,” said UE Director of Cross Country/Track & Field Brooks LeCompte.  “That’s what I’m hoping to see tomorrow.”

UE has not competed since racing in the 20th-Annual UE Invitational on October 15.  At that meet, eight of the ten Purple Aces who ran posted season-best times, with five squad members running personal-best marks.

On the men’s side, sophomore Adam Oulgout (St. Paul, Minn./Central) continued his strong season, as he posted his second-straight PR time with a mark of 26:28.6 in the 8-K to place sixth overall.  Oulgout has been UE’s top finisher in all three meets this season, with fifth-year runner Carson Kline (Terre Haute, Ind./South) running second for UE in each of the last two meets.

On the women’s side, sophomore Ellie Stewart (Lombard, Ill./Glenbard South) turned in a personal-best time of 20:39.3 in the 5-K to pace the Purple Aces at the UE Invitational.  Stewart has led UE in two of the three meets this season, with graduate student Melanie Helder (Hudsonville, Mich./Hudsonville) posting the fastest time of the year so far, with a time of 18:14.0 at the Live In Lou Classic in her only race of the fall.  Helder’s time currently ranks right outside the MVC’s top 10 fastest 5-K times this fall.

“I know where we stand as a team in the MVC, and so, all we can control is how we perform tomorrow,” said LeCompte.  “I am a competitor by nature, and I just want to see us perform as best as we can, and build off of that for the future.”

Friday’s forecast calls for a chilly start to the race, with temperatures in the mid-40s expected in Terre Haute, but it will be sunny, dry and a light wind at 5-10 miles per hour.
