* University of Evansville Twenty-five Year Awards

Congratulations to those who were recognized at the Fall Conference for their twenty-five years of dedicated service to UE.

Meg Atwater-Singer – Professor, Access Services Librarian

Meg Atwater-Singer joined the UE Libraries on March 1, 1997, as the Reference and Instruction Librarian. She received her bachelor’s degree from Kean (pronounced cane) College in 1992 and her master's in library science from Rutgers University in 1995. Before joining UE, she worked at Brookdale Community College’s Learning Center in New Jersey and at Condé Nast Publications Library in New York City.

In 2008, Meg became the Collection Management Librarian, renamed Access Services Librarian in 2015. In this capacity, she oversees the Information Desk, circulation, reserves, interlibrary loan, the physical collections, security, social media, and the website.

In 2003, she was granted tenure and promoted to the rank of Assistant Professor. She was promoted again in 2009 to Associate Professor and in 2018 to Full Professor.

Meg has served on every Faculty Senate committee except Fiscal Affairs, which as Senate Chair she can attend ex officio this year.

Meg is active in Indiana's statewide resource sharing initiatives and has presented conference sessions on assessing interlibrary loan usage, comparing interlibrary loan systems, and recently authored a paper on the copyright practices of Indiana academic libraries. She has written over 100 book reviews, given 37 conference presentations, authored, or co-authored 6 articles, and received 10 grants.

Leland Dierks, Graphic Designer, Office of Publications

Leland Dierks is a Graphic Designer working in the Office of Publications. Leland is responsible for creating visual text and imagery. He designs creative content for campaigns, print ads, web graphics, brochures, flyers, and billboards. Leland is always willing to help with a quick question or explain how to perform a process in the different digital formats.

He was born and raised in Chester, Illinois, and graduated from Southeast Missouri State University with a Bachelor of Science in Art.

Leland moved to Evansville in 1989. He and his wife Angie are proud parents of three University of Evansville graduates: sons Jordan, Lincoln, and Parker. Their daughter, Claire, will be a senior at Reitz this fall.

Leland says one of things he likes most about working at UE is the people and the family atmosphere. In his spare time, Leland likes running and has logged many, many miles over his lunch break. He also enjoys fishing and spending time with his family.

Barbara Kerner – Accounts Payable Clerk, Accounting and Audit

Barbara Kerner has worked in the Accounting and Audit department for 25 years. She started at UE as the Accounting Clerk in 1997. Five years later, she became the Accounts Payable Clerk. In 2007, she graduated with a Bachelor’s in Liberal Studies. If you have worked at UE for very long, there is a great chance that you’ve worked with Barb. She has a wealth of knowledge that just can’t be replaced. While we are not sure of the exact count, she has processed thousands of payments for students and vendors over these last 25 years. In the last fiscal year alone, she helped process over 1300 vouchers. She is a quick-witted, wonderful co-worker and loved and appreciated by everyone in the department.

Barb was born and raised in Evansville, Indiana and graduated from Bosse High School. She has been married to Tom Kerner for 40 years. Her sons, TJ and Chris both graduated from UE and work and live in Evansville. She has four grandsons that keep her busy when she is not at work processing your check requests. They range in age from an infant to 12 years old. In her spare time, she enjoys days at Lake Barkley on the boat with her family. She also enjoys riding her bike around town and the occasional game of pickle ball with her UE friends.

Cherie Leonhardt – Manager of Transfer Admission, Office of Admission

Cherie graduated from the University of Evansville in 1988 and majored in advertising and public relations. During her time at UE, she attended Harlaxton College and worked for the UE Crescent newspaper. Her first job was in advertising sales at the Evansville Courier and Press which largely came because of experience gained by working at the Crescent.

On a whim one day, she stopped by to see a friend, Elizabeth Lyon, who was working in Admissions at the time. An impromptu interview ensued, and the next thing Cherie knew she was a new admission counselor; that was in the summer of 1989. If we do the math, this takes us to 33 years. However, after working for six years in Admissions, Cherie left UE. She worked for two years in hospital marketing and returned to the UE Office of Admission exclaiming, “The grass is NOT greener on the other side!”

This 25-year award encompasses time spent at UE since returning in 1997. Since then, she’s served the University in various positions including Director of Transfer Admission, Assistant Director of the Honors Program, Coordinator of the Office of Veterans Affairs, and an Academic Advisor. In 2020, she rejoined the Office of Admission as Manager of Transfer Admission. Things have come full circle.

Cherie says she feels blessed to have had a career that she enjoys and always looks forward to coming to work every day. Cherie says, “UE is a special place full of awesome colleagues and students. I’m honored to work for my alma mater that I love so much.”

Susan Salee, Director of Advancement Services, Office of University Advancement

Susan Salee began her career with the University of Evansville as the Administrative Assistant for Development prior to promotions to Data Researcher, and Assistant Director of Annual Giving. Under the leadership of Jack Barner, she eventually moved into the role of Associate Director of Advancement Services. In this position, she led the comprehensive implementation of a new data base system for advancement that houses all alumni student information, which provides information such as their history and volunteer work for all UE graduates, parents, and friends of the University.

Most recently she was promoted to Director of Advancement Services and during the first world-wide pandemic in 100 years, she led her team through the successful conversion and implementation of a cloud-based CRM platform for advancement.

While Susan’s work is often behind the scenes, her expertise in donor engagement systems and her university pride and knowledge is second to none. She is a helpful collaborator and problem solver who is recognized as a resource to many around campus.

Susan also managed to raise four children throughout her tenure with the University and has remained an active member of her church and her community.

* University of Evansville Announces Berger Awards for 2022

Congratulations to the newest recipients of the Sadelle and Sydney Berger Awards for Service and Scholarly Activity presented by Mr. Charlie Berger at the Fall Conference.

Service Award – Dr. Kristina Hochwender

It is with great pleasure the University of Evansville Berger Award Committee bestows the 2022 Berger Service Award to Dr. Kristina Hochwender for her long-term service contribution to faculty engagement, student success, and pedagogy at the University of Evansville. As a UE faculty member, Dr. Hochwender has been a member of many service activities, and committees, both elected and appointed. However, her more noteworthy contributions are for her roles as Director of General Education and Director of the Eykamp Center of Teaching Excellence, both of which are arduous and time-consuming endeavors. One of the nominations submitted on behalf of Dr. Hochwender provides a succinct synopsis of Dr. Hochwender’s role as Director of General Education: “The Director of General Education is often a thankless job, tasked with managing a program disliked by some and misunderstood by many, but that ultimately effects every major and student. It is a rare person who has the temperament to listen patiently as Dr. Hochwender did to the competing and contradictory needs of the overall program, to find common ground, and make forward progress. Dr. Hochwender inherited a program at a crossroads and reconnected the program to realistic goals and assessment plans. Her thoughtful but thorough attention to the work on these committees benefitted all of its members.”

As Director of the Eykamp Center for Teaching Excellence (ECTE), Dr. Hochwender was also tasked with many responsibilities including, but not limited to: coordinating UE New Faculty Orientation including the provision of mentors for the new faculty, directing weekly conferences for new faculty, providing regular campus-wide programs for faculty professional development, managing two different grant opportunities for UE faculty, managing UE faculty book clubs, providing portfolio review sessions, and directing the ECTE advisory council.

Therefore, based on her long-term service contribution to the greater UE community, the Berger Committee confers the Berger Award for Service to Dr. Kristina Hochwender.

Scholarship Award – Dr. Katie Aldred-Craig

It is with great pleasure the University of Evansville Berger Award Committee confers the 2022 Berger Award for Scholarship to Dr. Katie Aldred-Craig. Dr. Aldred-Craig has been an active participant in research starting very early in her career, in fact she was first published in 2009 as an undergraduate student at UE. The incorporation of research into the undergraduate experience is very important to Dr. Aldred-Craig and since her arrival to the UE Biology Department, she has mentored about two students each year for some type of research project. During her professional career, Dr. Aldred-Craig has published articles across a range of journals using various cellular, molecular, and organismal experimental protocols and some of her articles have been cited over one thousand times. As a faculty member in the Biology Department at UE, Dr. Aldred-Craig has established a strong research program and has collaborated with her colleagues in the Department of Biology. In fact, one of Dr. Aldred-Craig’s nominators provided the following narrative, “Dr. Aldred-Craig has co-authored a publication with UE professors Dale Edwards and Brian Ernsting (simultaneously) which should earn her some sort of extra meritorious service award”. Most would agree with that statement!

As a result of her exemplary research endeavors, Dr. Aldred-Craig and her students have presented their results at several regional and national conferences including the prestigious Gordon Research Seminars. At that conference in 2018, Dr. Aldred-Craig, along with three UE students, presented her research on DNA Topoisomerases in Biology and Medicine. The inclusion of students at a prominent conference is one example of Dr. Aldred-Craig’s commitment to undergraduate research opportunities and the overall mission of the university.

Therefore, based on her scholarly activities, the Berger Committee confers the Berger Award for Scholarship to Dr. Katie Aldred-Craig.

* Professor Rania Mousa Awarded Best Teaching Innovation Prize at the American Accounting Association Annual Conference

Associate Professor of Accounting and Mead Johnson Nutrition Endowed Chair Rania Mousa has received the Best Teaching Innovation Award for 2022 at this year’s American Accounting Association Annual Conference held in San Diego. It was given in recognition of Dr. Mousa’s instructional case, “Fraud at the Public Park Community School District,” published in the AIS Educator Journal. The award is given based on the case originality, impact, and availability of external evidence of quality. The Journal metrics indicate that the case has been downloaded 147 times since February 2021. Efficacy of the case has been tested by professors of forensic accounting, auditing, and accounting information systems courses in three different universities, teaching 118 students in total. The case has been successfully integrated into Dr. Mousa’s forensic accounting course since Fall 2018.

The instructional case study examines potentially fraudulent activities that took place in the Public Park Community School District. Students analyze potentially fraudulent incidents, identify red flags, calculate potential losses, examine deficiencies in internal controls, and suggest effective internal controls. Student feedback indicates the case increased their understanding of fraudulent activities, internal control weaknesses, and effective internal controls in the specific context of public-school districts. The findings also highlight the importance of cultivating a strong internal control environment in not-for-profit organizations engaging in fundraising activities.

The picture features the President of the Forensic Accounting Section of the American Accounting Association, Professor Chih-Chen Lee at Northern Illinois University, and Associate Professor Rania Mousa.

* UE Women's Soccer Continues Homestand Sunday Against Austin Peay

The University of Evansville women’s soccer team will continue a season-opening four-match homestand on Sunday afternoon when the Purple Aces welcome the Austin Peay State University Governors to Arad McCutchan Stadium in Evansville. Kick-off is set for 1 p.m.

Evansville opened the 2022 season on Thursday night with a 3-0 loss to Southeastern Conference power Vanderbilt. UE opened the homestand last weekend with an exhibition loss to Saint Louis University as well, although the Billikens proved their worth Thursday night by defeating #8 Arkansas, 1-0. Now, UE will look for its first points of the season standings-wise against a new-look Austin Peay squad on Sunday.

Evansville and Austin Peay played to a 1-1 draw last September in Clarksville, Tennessee. The Governors are under the direction now of first-year head coach Kim McGowan. McGowan guided Austin Peay to a scoreless draw Thursday at Miami (OH), a team the Governors lost to last year 2-0. Eight different Governors fired shots in the draw, led by freshman forward Ellie Dreas with two.

“Despite the loss last night to Vanderbilt, I actually saw a lot of growth and a lot of positives in our play,” said UE head coach Chris Pfau. “We likely will not see the same level of game speed that we saw against both Vanderbilt and Saint Louis the rest of the season, so hopefully, playing those matches will make us better as we go forward with our season.

“The key for us is to continue to build on what we have been working on in training and in these first two games. We made improvements in a lot of areas against Vanderbilt from our first match against Saint Louis, and we have to continue to make improvements on Sunday against Austin Peay.”

Live stats will be available for Sunday’s match, but there will not be any video streaming available.

* Vanderbilt Tops UE Women's Soccer, 3-0, In Season-Opener

Reigning first-team all-Southeastern Conference forward Raegan Kelley recorded a goal and an assist on Thursday night to power the visiting Vanderbilt University Commodores to a 3-0 victory over the University of Evansville women’s soccer team at Arad McCutchan Stadium in Evansville, Indiana.

After the two sides battled back and forth for the first 30 minutes, Kelley set up teammate Rachel Deresky for an opportunity on the right side, which she slipped past a diving UE goalkeeper Myia Danek for the match’s first goal of the contest.

Vanderbilt took a 1-0 lead to the halftime locker room, before striking just minutes into the second half, as reserve Caroline Betts found the lower-left 90 from 18 yards out on the left side to take a 2-0 lead.  Kelley then headed home a loose ball in the box in the 63rd minute to provide the final margin of victory for Vanderbilt.

“We knew coming in that Vanderbilt was a very good team, and I thought that they showed it tonight,” said UE head coach Chris Pfau.  “I was actually pleased with the growth that I saw in our team from our exhibition match against SLU to tonight.  I thought we played a lot more composed, especially in the midfield, and did a lot of things well tonight.

“The speed of the opponent these first two matches has been higher than we will likely see the rest of the year.  Hopefully, the game will begin to slow down a little, especially for some of our younger players, and we can start to show what this team is capable of.”

Evansville will return to action on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. when UE hosts Austin Peay State at McCutchan Stadium.  Austin Peay tied Miami (OH), 0-0, this afternoon in its season-opener in Ohio.
