* Professor Rania Mousa Awarded Best Teaching Innovation Prize at the American Accounting Association Annual Conference

Associate Professor of Accounting and Mead Johnson Nutrition Endowed Chair Rania Mousa has received the Best Teaching Innovation Award for 2022 at this year’s American Accounting Association Annual Conference held in San Diego. It was given in recognition of Dr. Mousa’s instructional case, “Fraud at the Public Park Community School District,” published in the AIS Educator Journal. The award is given based on the case originality, impact, and availability of external evidence of quality. The Journal metrics indicate that the case has been downloaded 147 times since February 2021. Efficacy of the case has been tested by professors of forensic accounting, auditing, and accounting information systems courses in three different universities, teaching 118 students in total. The case has been successfully integrated into Dr. Mousa’s forensic accounting course since Fall 2018.

The instructional case study examines potentially fraudulent activities that took place in the Public Park Community School District. Students analyze potentially fraudulent incidents, identify red flags, calculate potential losses, examine deficiencies in internal controls, and suggest effective internal controls. Student feedback indicates the case increased their understanding of fraudulent activities, internal control weaknesses, and effective internal controls in the specific context of public-school districts. The findings also highlight the importance of cultivating a strong internal control environment in not-for-profit organizations engaging in fundraising activities.

The picture features the President of the Forensic Accounting Section of the American Accounting Association, Professor Chih-Chen Lee at Northern Illinois University, and Associate Professor Rania Mousa.
