A campus-wide electrical power outage is scheduled for Sunday, March 4, from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. This outage is required in order for Vectren to make repairs to the high-voltage distribution system serving UE. All buildings on campus will be affected.  Please call Physical Plant at extension 2775, or e-mail js607@evansville.edu if you have questions or need assistance to accommodate the outage.

Bring your portfolios to this event, and receive advice on how to make your portfolio the best it can be!  Proofreading services will be provided and also various sample portfolios for you to look at. The University Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Assistant Professor and Director of Orchestral Activities Brian St. John, will present a concert in Neu Chapel on Tuesday, February 28, at 7:30 p.m. The concert will open with Schubert’s Overture to Die Zauberharfe, a piece which also became associated later with the composer’s incidental music for Helmina von Chézy’s play, Rosamunde.  UE graduate and soprano Kelci Scott, last year’s Vukovich Concerto Competition co-winner, will then join the orchestra to perform arias from Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi, Carlisle Floyd’s Susannah, and Gounod’s Faust.  The orchestra will close the concert with a performance of the Polovtsian Dances from Alexander Borodin’s Prince Igor.  The concert is free and open to the public.

Assistant Professor of Music Therapy Kathleen Murphy recently spoke before the Evansville chapter of Pi Lambda Theta, a prestigious national honor society for educators.  Her presentation was entitled “Music Therapy - What’s That?”  The event took place at the Ohio Township Public Library in Newburgh, Ind.

Are you interested in exploring Asian history, culture, art, music, media, economy, and politics? UE offers a five-week summer Asian program in KOREA and JAPAN from June 21-July 26. Associate Professor of Management Information Systems Peter Rosen will be discussing ""Building Your Personal Brand Through Social Media."

What can people learn about you from the information and photos you share on a social networking website? How can you use this global phenomenon to positively influence your reputation?

Rosen's recent research on social networking has attracted national attention from media outlets such as The Wall Street Journal, the Chicago Tribune, and Fox News.

"In my presentation, I'll discuss how you can use social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn to create a brand for yourself - showing the world where your expertise and passions lie," said Rosen. "I'll share real-life examples of people who have successfully done this, and I will also pull from my recent research on Facebook as a powerful predictor of job performance and academic success."

With colleagues at Northern Illinois University and Auburn University, Rosen recently co-authored a study titled "Social networking websites, personality ratings, and the organizational context: More than meets the eye?," which was published in the February 2012 issue of the Journal of Applied Social Psychology.

This is the second year of UE's monthly faculty lecture series. It is normally held the first Thursday of every month.

Attendees are welcome to eat lunch during the presentation. There is a restaurant conveniently located in the Old National Bank lobby.

The UE campus community (students, faculty, staff, administrators, alumni) are invited to participate in our book discussion kick-off event set for Wednesday, February 29 from 4:00-5:00 p.m. in Eykamp 252, Ridgway University Center. About Community Read
The University of Evansville Office of Veterans Affairs has joined forces with the University of Southern Indiana to participate in a Community Read conversation about “War and Our Community.” This semester long project will involve readings, discussions, and reflections on the issues facing returning veterans and their community. As part of the project, the Community Read has chosen Tim O’Brien’s collection of short stories titled “The Things They Carried.” This award winning book reflects on the experiences of the Vietnam War and the challenges that veterans face upon their return. The Community Read hopes that this collection will span discussions across the community and open up a wide ranging response to the concerns of returning veterans in our community.

Discussions, lectures, and community events are planned throughout the city of Evansville including discussion groups organized through the UE Office of Veterans Affairs. Further information about upcoming events is available at http://www.usi.edu/communityread/

 

Many young women are the victims of dating violence, and some may not even know it. The members of Chi Omega are partnering with their local philanthropy, Albion Bacon Fellows Center on Wednesday, February 29 to bring awareness about this issue. All students, especially women are encouraged to attend. Bring a friend, and educate yourself about healthy relationships. The speaker starts at 7 p.m. in Eykamp Hall, Ridgway University Center.

The Writing Center will close at 10 p.m. Thursday, March 1, and remain closed through the end of Spring Break. The following week, March 11-16, it will be open by appointment only. Teacher Education Admission packets are now available in the School of Education office located in Graves Hall, Room 304. Your interview will be scheduled when the application and professional education portfolio (live text or hard copy) are submitted. The deadline for submission is March 12.  Scheduled interviews will be conducted on March 19, 20, and 21. Please Note:  You must meet the following requirements to apply: 1) a passing score on all three praxis 1 tests or passing ACT/SAT scores, 2) overall GPA 2.8 or better, 3) grade C or better in EDUC 100, 200, 320 or currently enrolled.

File the 2012-13 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at www.fafsa.gov to be considered for federal, state and University financial aid, including federal student loans and federal work-study for next year.

Students from Indiana must ensure that their 2012-13 FAFSA is received by the federal processor no later than March 10, 2012; however, filing by March 10 is beneficial for all students. Questions regarding the FAFSA should be directed to the Office of Financial Aid at 812-488-2364, 800-424-8634 or financialaid@evansville.edu .

Students who have 44 credit hours and are wanting to live in the Villages for the 2012-13 academic year should come to the Residence Life Office and pick up Village Request Cards.  All Village Request Cards are due back to the Residence Life Office by 5 p.m., March 2.  You should Also submit your housing and food service contract on WebAdvisor this week as well.

The University of Evansville has two papers published in the National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR) 2011 proceedings. The students were invited to submit their conference abstracts as papers and have gone through a rigorous peer-review process. All for students were majors in the Psychology and Neuroscience Department when they attended the 2011 NCUR conference. Kandace and Kaylea have graduated. All of these students are applying for graduate school.

Nancy Frazier, applicant specialist in the Office of Admission, has a new granddaughter. Hadley Lynn Frazier arrived at 8:14 a.m. this morning (Monday, February 27)! She weighed 7 pounds and 13 ounces and was 20 ½ iches  long. Everyone is doing great! Hadley’s parents, Ryan Frazier (UE alum) and Abbey, are very excited. The couple have two sons, Hudson and Hayden.

Professor of Creative Writing Margaret McMullan’s latest novel Sources Of Light has recently been nominated for the 2012-2013 Oklahoma Library Association’s Sequoyah Book Award. The Sequoyah Book Award program is one of the most prestigious of the state student choice awards in the nation. Throughout the year, students will read and discuss the book.  Awarded an American Library Association Best Book for Young Adults, the Best YA Book of Indiana, and a Chicago Public Library Teen Selection, Sources of Light was also nominated for the National Book Award, the Capital Choice Award, and the Dorothy Canfield Fisher Book Award in Vermont. It will be released in paperback this summer. Professor McMullan is the Melvin M. Peterson Endowed Chair in Literature and Writing.

Batesville, Ind. native Colt Ryan picked up his third Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week honor after scoring a career-high 43 points at Creighton before leading UE to an overtime win against Missouri State that gave the Aces the win they needed to clinch the third seed entering the MVC Tournament.

In a week that saw the University of Evansville clinch its best league finish in over ten years, Ryan showed why he finished as the MVC's leading scorer in league play.  He began the week with the game of his career at Creighton. 

The junior scored a career-high 43 points, marking just the fourth 40-point game in UE history and the first since 1992.  Ryan hit 17 out of 24 shots, was 4-8 from three-point range and finished with six rebounds, five steals and four assists in 41 minutes of action. 

He wrapped up the regular season by helping the Aces to an overtime win against Missouri State as he scored 12 points to go along with five rebounds, three assists and a steal.  For the week, Ryan averaged 27.5 PPG, 5.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 3 steals per game as the Aces finished the year third in the Valley.
