* Make Sure Office Forwarded Calls Have Identifiable Voicemail

As the majority of our faculty and staff are working from home until the Governor's order has been lifted, many office calls have been forwarded to individual cell phones. If your calls are currently being forwarded, please ensure you have an easily identifiable voicemail set up on your personal device. For example, " Hi, you've reached Holly Smith, Sr. Marketing Director for University of Evansville. I am currently working from home and am checking my voicemails regularly. Please leave me a detailed message regarding how I may assist you." As our switchboard cannot be forwarded remotely, this will greatly assist our technical team during this time.

* Donate to Aces Haven

We need your help! Aces Haven is a student established resource center that features a fully stocked food pantry, personal hygiene items, and various articles of clothing. Additionally, we have established an electronic food pantry that allows us to transfer donated Ace Bucks. We have some students still on campus and off campus who need our help in the days ahead. Currently open 10am to 1pm, Monday - Friday. Items can be left outside of Neu Chapel at the east door.

Upcoming Events

* Professional Development Online Workshop - Free to UE Faculty and Staff

The Center for the Advancement of Learning is offering the online workshop “Navigating Generational Differences in the Work Place” free to UE faculty and staff. This workshop will be facilitated by Tad Dickel, PhD, on Tuesday, March 31, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Many employers are trying to navigate three to four different generations working in their organizations. This workshop will introduce characteristics and differences of Traditionalists, Baby Boomers, Generation X, and Millennials. Participants will learn about the unique perspectives of each generation that lead to conflict. A process will be introduced for multi-generational teams to work through these conflicts to get better results.

To register, please email Cindy Felts at cf128@evansville.edu by Monday, March 30.

* Interlibrary Loan Restrictions due to COVID-19

As COVID-19 closures and stay-at-home directives have spread across the country, including Indiana’s on March 23, libraries are suspending their lending services, making it very difficult to fill interlibrary loan requests for books, DVDs, CDs, scores, etc. As a result, the Interlibrary Loan department will not be placing requests for physical materials. If you do make a request, we will be in contact to see if we can request a chapter or two or if you can wait until a later date.

We are committed to providing resources and will continue to request chapters or journal articles. Please use the book chapter/article request forms in Quill to request materials.

If you have an item from ILL in your possession, PLEASE KEEP IT – even if the due date has passed! We are asking libraries to renew these items. See Quill for new due dates.

* COMM 380 Intercultural Communication Offered Online Summer I and II

Would one class that fulfills many general education requirements and teaches valuable skills interest you? How would you like to take such a course NO MATTER where you plan to be this summer?

Do you want to reduce your course load during the regular fall or spring semesters?

Would you like to be more prepared for your future career in a diverse society and global world? Want to add another skill set to distinguish you from the pack? How about increasing your cultural knowledge and communication competency to relate more effectively with people from other cultures in your personal and professional life?

Do you want to fulfill several General Education competency requirements in one course?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, you should consider enrolling in COMM 380 ONLINE (Intercultural Communication) offered in Summer Session I and II.

COMM 380 meets criteria for General Education Outcome 9 (Understanding of Core Concepts of Society, Human Behavior, and Civic Knowledge) and Overlay Component A (Global Diversity: International Component).

For more information contact professor emeritus of communication Dean Thomlison at dt4@evansville.edu.

* Science and Math Majors Wanted!

Are you a science or math major? Are you interested in computers, data, or the intersection of both? Have you seen powerful data visualizations like the ones in this article and thought, “Wow, that’s powerful”? or, “Hey, how did they do that?” or even, “Dang, I wanna do that!”

Have we got the program for you!

You are invited to participate in the Computers in Science and Math (CiSM) Certificate Program, beginning Fall 2020! For just a few more credits, you could complete an interdisciplinary certificate which future employers and professional programs will see attests to the fact that you “get it” - the way computers, data, science, and math are all intertwined and integral to modern (and future) society. You will have a few additional ‘marketable’ (or at least useful!) skills to boot!

What’s more, we anticipate that we may be able to provide you with an additional scholarship of up to $2,000 (pending a short essay application and demonstrated financial need) while you participate in the program!

Interested? Any questions? Please check out the CiSM website and/or contact us via email at cism@evansville.edu. (Or, if you happen to have taken a class with or know one of us, we’d be happy to tell you about this opportunity too!)

* Library Resources and Assistance

University of Evansville Library has been working with vendors to offer expanded access to collections for the remainder of the school year.

  • JSTOR has agreed to open access to all collections and ebooks beginning March 20 and running until June 1.
  • The University of Michigan Press has opened access to scholarly EBooks, beginning in March and running until April 30.
  • Oxford University Press is offering access to COVID-19 content, in addition to our current collection, for the foreseeable future.
  • JoVE is offering access to their science education videos until June 15, you must create an account first.
  • Elsevier is expanding their collection of online textbooks and is also offering information about the novel coronavirus.
  • Project Muse is working with publishers to offer free ebooks and ejournals through their platform. The length of free access is set by the publisher so could disappear at their discretion.
  • Ovid is offering tools and resources to clinicians and researchers about COVID-19.
  • Pearson is offering tools and tips for academics during the pandemic. Aimed at UK institutions, you may still find some useful information here to get you through the remainder of the semester.
  • I am working with Kanopy, which we trialed last fall, to offer access to their online streaming content. Consultation is still in the works, but you can browse the catalog at the link above. Some of their collections include The Great Courses and PBS publications. I will update you when purchase options are available.
  • UEL offers access to the New York Times. If you haven’t already signed up, follow these instructions to set up your account using your UE email address.
  • Flipster magazines are available as well, which you can access from our website. Or you can download the app to your tablet or phone and download issues to your device. Follow the simple instructions on the app and choose University of Evansville as your institution.
  • As always, we have an extensive collection of Databases available from our website and Quest is available. Use Off-Campus Access and log in using your library barcode.
  • And while we’re sheltering in place, Creative Bug is offering a two month free trial so you can learn a new craft to fill the hours when you’re not teaching or studying.

If you’re looking for something to keep you or your loved ones entertained, a podcast is always a safe bet. Some of my favorites include:

  • Stuff You Missed in History Class, which is offering some past light topic favorites, including one on intentional train wrecks in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
  • Radio Lab is always entertaining and informative.
  • For those who have a taste for the macabre Casefile True Crime, which deals with murders and kidnappings, should be right up your alley.
  • I also recommend Atlanta Monster, Monster: the Zodiac Killer, and their latest Monster: DC Sniper, which profiles serial killings.

If you have any questions (or suggestions for other podcasts) feel free to contact me or any of your hard working librarians. We’re doing all we can to make access to resources as painless as possible.
