The University has formed a Task Force to discuss the rapidly evolving concern regarding the coronavirus. We wanted to share that the best way to prevent illness is to avoid being exposed to the coronavirus. The CDC always recommends everyday preventive actions to help prevent the spread of respiratory diseases, including:
• Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
• Stay home when you are sick.
• Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
• Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.
• Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing. For information about handwashing, see CDC’s Handwashing website.

Opening, and Closing, the American Door: Immigration, 1880-1930

This talk will focus on the great tide of immigrants who came to America in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century and the backlash they inspired. My own Greek grandfather’s life will be used as a case study of the immigrant experience. Connections with the immigration question today will conclude the talk.

Ann Flesor Beck, Ph.D. is an independent scholar and third-generation confectioner. Dr. Beck’s research into the immigrant experience has focused upon first-generation Greek immigrants in central Illinois. Her forthcoming book: Sweet Greeks: First-Generation Immigrant Confectioners in the Heartland (University of Illinois Press) will be published this year.

Nick has gained appreciation around campus for his efficiency as a Desktop Support Coordinator with OTS.  He is kind and helpful in all of his efforts to keep employee computers running properly, supporting in-class tech set up and equipment for large meetings.

Nick is known to be willing to assist others, very dependable and always timely in responding to the needs of the campus.  The positive attitude that he daily shows along with his technical expertise does not go unnoticed.  He is a great collaborator and easily works with the demands of multiple areas each day.  Nick is one of a kind and an excellent addition to UE!

On a night meant for celebration, the University of Evansville baseball team followed suit, downing Indiana, 5-4, on opening night of German American Bank Field at Charles H. Braun Stadium in Evansville.

The evening began with three ceremonial first pitches, including members from German American Bank and UE President Chris Pietruszkiewicz to celebrate the opening of the newly renovated stadium.

Evansville got its offense started early, scoring a run in the bottom of the first inning. After senior Craig Shepherd reach base, junior Tanner Craig smashed a double off the wall in left field, scoring Shepherd and giving the Aces a one-run advantage early.

The Hoosiers would answer in the top of the third inning as a wild pitch scored Richardson from third base, tying the contest at a run each. Evansville though wasted little time retaking the lead,  moving in front in the bottom half of the inning on an RBI single by senior Kenton Crews that sent Shepherd home. Senior Troy Beilsmith doubled the advantage with an RBI walk two at bats later. With the bases still loaded, freshman Max Malley came up huge. Malley laced a base hit through the middle, scoring sophomore Indiana Stanley and senior Kenton Crews to provide Evansville with a 5-1 lead.

Indiana crawled back within one run after scoring two runs in the fourth and another in the fifth to cut Evansville lead to just a run. The Hoosiers looked poised to tie the game in the top of the eighth inning, putting a pair of runners on with no outs. A crucial moment in the game, Richardson appeared to hit into a double play, but freshman Brent Widder's throw to first sailed high appearing to have allowed the tying run to score. During the process of the play, the second base umpire ruled the Hoosier's runner to have interfered with Widder on his throw and confirmed so by replay, giving the Aces a double play and leaving the Hoosiers with two outs. Freshman Jace Kressin took advantage of the play, forcing a ground out from the next batter to end the inning and the threat.

In the top of the ninth, sophomore Michael Parks came in to close out the contest and did just that. Parks forced two fly outs and ended the game with a ground out to second as the Aces captured the 5-4 win over Indiana.

Freshman Mark Shallenberger led the Aces, going two-for-three from the plate with a run scored and a walk. On the mound, junior Caleb Reinhardt earned his first win as an Ace, pitching 1.1 innings, allowing two runs on two hits.

The win was the first over the Hoosiers for Evansville since a 2-1 14-inning victory on April 15, 2014.

Evansville remains at home this weekend for a three-game series against Purdue on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at German American Bank Field.

A 10-run third inning propelled the University of Evansville softball team to an 11-0 win over Purdue Fort Wayne in Tuesday’s home opener at Cooper Stadium.

Already up 1-0, the Purple Aces sent 14 runners to the plate while scoring 10 runs.  UE posted seven hits in the inning while walking four times.  Overall – UE notched 11 runs on nine hits in the contest while garnering six bases on balls.

“This was a great team effort today.  In the circle, our pitchers did a great job of keeping the Purdue Fort Wayne batters off balance,” Aces head softball coach Mat Mundell said.  “Offensively, we were able to get the job done with runners in scoring position; we had some timely hitting while showing patience in earning walks.  Overall, it was a great way to open our home schedule.”

Evansville scored the first run of the game in the first when Haley Woolf crossed the plate on an error by the Mastodons.  Woolf drew a 2-out walk to bring Alyssa Barela to the plate.  She hit a bloop single to center and Woolf scored from first on an error in the outfield.  Katie McLean would add another walk in the frame, but PFW was able to get out of the jam.

Purdue Fort Wayne threatened in the first two innings, earning a total of four walks, but could not push the runners over.  In the bottom of the third, UE took advantage, plating 10 runs.  Jessica Fehr and Eryn Gould led the frame off with back-to-back doubles.  With one out, the offense continued to run at an elite level.

Following a single by Barela, McLean walked for the second time in the game to load the bases.  UE’s offense saw seven batters in a row come through with either a single or walk with the bases loaded.  Pinch hitter Jenna Lis got it started with a single to right before Lindsay Renneisen got on with a 4-pitch walk.  Toni Galas singled to third before Kat Mueller earned the free pass to bring home another. 

Jessica Fehr picked up her second hit of the inning, singling to third base.  Renneisen slid under the tag at home to extend the lead.  Following a walk by Gould, Haley Woolf hit a bases clearing double that capped off the inning.  Emily Lockhart came into the game in the fourth and sat the Mastodons down in order, tossing two scoreless frames and striking out five.  Evansville took the 5-inning win by a final of 11-0.

Izzy Vetter made the start for UE and threw three hitless innings.  She struck out six batters on the way to her fourth win of the season.

Missouri Valley Conference play opens this weekend when the Aces welcome UNI to Cooper Stadium.  The teams take to the field for a noon doubleheader on Saturday before playing a single game at 11 a.m. on Sunday.
