Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost Michael Austin, Dean of the College of Engineering and Computer Science Ying Shang, and Dean of the William L. Ridgway College of Arts and Sciences Ray Lutgring have been working with the Northeast Electric Power University in Jilin, China, on a cooperative educational program in civil engineering and have signed a formal agreement to begin allowing civil engineering students from NEU to receive a dual degree from both universities through a 3+1 agreement.

Students in the cohort will take courses from UE in China over two summers and will then come to UE's campus for their senior year. Students may also come to UE for two years and receive a degree from us, or come for three years and transfer back credit to NEU and receive a degree from them.

The goal is to bring between 15-20 students in each year’s cohort and expand a successful agreement to other majors. 

Austin, Shang, and Lutgring also traveled to Changchun, the capital of Jilin Province, where and met with the president and students of the Northeast Normal University, a teacher preparation college. They will also visit Shenyang, the capital of the Liaoning province on the Northeastern Coast, to meet with officials from Shenyang Jianzhu University. The purpose of these meetings is to begin discussions about collaboration agreements, as well as to sign an artuculation agreement with SJZU.

This agreement permits Master's of Engineering students to transfer 9 credits from SJZU into that program as part of a dual master's degree. Students will complete the degree at UE and receive a master's degree from both institutions.

The University of Evansville’s Department of Art will host an exhibition of selected works by UE professor emeritus, Les Miley, a nationally and internationally recognized artist and art educator. The exhibition runs until Sunday, October 19.

On Thursday, September 5, the public is invited to a reception at 6:30 p.m. followed by an artist’s talk by Miley at 7:00 p.m. in the Melvin Peterson Gallery.

Miley joined the UE art faculty in 1961 and retired as chair of the Department of Art in 2001. He served as the director and instructor of the Ceramics Workshop in New Harmony, Ind. From 1966 to 2009 and feature articles and photographs of his work have been included in nine prestigious publications.

The exhibition has been curated from several collections and will also include works by a selection Miley’s previous students.

“My works in clay are a celebration of life with an emphasis on the joyful, positive aspects of living in this world, said Miley. “Fundamental to my work in clay, and in my living experience, is a sense of order combined with an element of chance.”

Sara Petrosillo is an assistant professor of English at the University of Evansville. She holds a PhD in medieval literature from the University of California, Davis and a BA in English and Italian literature from Colby College. Her research and teaching interests include: medieval and early modern literature, feminist theories, medieval manuscript studies, poetics, and critical animal studies. She is currently working on a book, Hawking Women: Falconry, Gender, and the Poetics of Control in Medieval Literary Culture, and she has published essays in medieval, early modern, and theory journals and in a book on animals in medieval literature. Her Andiron lecture on medieval antisemitism and the literary genre, “Miracles of the Virgin,” derives from her interest in examining racial and gender biases in discourses from premodern to modern culture.

The most iconic woman in the Middle Ages graced love poems, the stage, stained glass windows, and even personal wax seals. Medieval depictions of the Virgin Mary offer an extraordinary picture of female power. Women from every social class viewed Mary as an exceptional saint but also—and crucially— as someone who shared something with all of them: she was a woman. Yet, at the height of her popularity in devotional literature, Mary became a violent tool in the hands of authors and audience: the persecutor of non-Christians in the literary genre “The Miracles of the Virgin.” How did a figure of motherhood and female power become such a dangerously powerful weapon? This widely popular genre demonstrates how sexism met racism in a premodern world. Tracing the racist weaponization of a female icon sheds light on our own society’s trouble with detecting the roots of oppression, especially when those roots are entangled in popular culture.

What is Catalyst for Change?
Catalyst for Change is an eight week service leadership development program. This experiential program helps you discover what your leadership style is, how to implement your skill set to improve anything you are involved in, and will dig deeper into how to be an innovative servant leader for your community. This is a great opportunity if you are wanting to establish leadership development before you take on a higher leadership role. Our hope is that you walk away with skills to be innovative inside the classroom, in your organizations, and overall in your personal life.

When does it start?
Since this is an eight week program, we will start to meet the week of September 23rd with location, weekday, and time to be determined based off the time that works for the whole group. We will meet seven times during the weekday and once during a weekend for a retreat.

UE Physician Assistant Program is proud to announce PA student Dennis Zelenak's appointment to the PAEA Future Educator Fellowship. Each year, fifteen PA students nationwide are selected to participate in this exciting year-long fellowship, designed to explore foundations in teaching, expose students to the current educational environment, and expand professional development and leadership opportunities. Students have access to a network of mentors and educators who curate an intentional and impactful educational experience for the fellows. Selected applicants will attend a kick-off session at the annual PAEA Education Forum. Fellows will participate in designated sessions at the Forum and then engage in a year-long program, working through educational programming, problems, and competencies designed to foster foundations in PA education. Fellows will also be invited back for the culminating session at the following Education Forum.

Pepsi has inked a deal to become the “Official Soft Drink of Purple Aces Athletics” at a ceremonial signing inside Meeks Family Fieldhouse on Wednesday afternoon.

The deal gives Pepsi exclusive pouring rights with the university and includes other drinks such as water (Aquafina) and Gatorade.

“Today was a big day for Aces Athletics and the University of Evansville as a whole,” UE Director of Athletics Mark Spencer said.  “Being able to affiliate our university and athletic programs with a national brand such as Pepsi is a great opportunity for everyone involved.”

Today’s deal with Pepsi is another exclusive partnership that has been created by Purple Aces Sports Properties, a division of Learfield IMG College. Exclusive deals such as Dunn Hospitality Group, Working Distributors, T.R.U. Event Rental, Brinker’s Jewelers, Tri-State Orthopedics, and ProRehab have been signed since Purple Aces Sports Properties was created in the spring of 2018.

Other official long-term partnerships that have been put in place this summer include: Sitex, Slade Print and ProMark. Another landmark agreement for the program saw Mister B’s sign on as “The Official Pizza and Wings of the Purple Aces”.  Mister B’s is now open on Burkhardt Road on Evansville’s east side.

The Opening Serve                 

• The Purple Aces open with Western Illinois on Friday at 10 a.m. and finish the day against Jackson State at 4:30 p.m.
• UE faces host Southeast Missouri State on Saturday in a 2 p.m. match

Taking it to a new level                        

• Senior Rachel Tam is coming off of one of the top seasons in program history as she recorded a total of 492 kills, an average of 4.21 per set
• Her total of 4.21 per frame saw her rank 31st in the country and third in the Missouri Valley Conference; her 492 kills finished with the same ranks
• With a tally of 538.5 points, she finished the year 34th in the NCAA and third in the league

Trending Upward                      

• At the end of the 2018 campaign, the Purple Aces were playing some of the best volleyball in the MVC
• Despite five losses in the last seven matches, UE forced four of those contests to go five sets
• On November 16, 2018, Evansville picked up its second-ever win over UNI, earning a 3-2 win inside Meeks Family Fieldhouse
• The Aces clinched the win with a 15-9 decision in the fifth and decisive frame

All-Freshman Performer                     

• Alondra Vazquez enjoyed a nice 2018 campaign that culminated in her being named to the MVC All-Freshman Team
• She tallied 2.56 kills per set while contributing 3.08 digs per game; both ranked third on the UE team
• Vazquez missed the opening portion of the season, but bounced back in a big way, registering at least eight kills in each match from October 5 through the end of the season
• Her top effort came in one of the biggest victories in program history as she totaled 25 kills and 25 digs in the win over Northern Iowa; both were career highs

Scouting the Opponents                                          

• Evansville opens against the Leathernecks on Friday morning in a 10 a.m. contest
• This marks the fourth meeting over the last five seasons between the programs; Evansville is a perfect 3-0, picking up 3-2 wins over WIU in each of the last two seasons in Macomb, Ill.
• Western Illinois went 1-2 in the Starkvegas Classic as they swept Mississippi Valley State in the opener before falling to Chattanooga and Mississippi State

• Jackson State got off to a 3-0 start at the SWAC/MEAC Tournament in Montgomery, Ala.
• After earning a 3-1 win over Delaware State in their first match, the Tigers swept South Carolina State and held on for a 3-2 win over Florida A&M
• Evansville faced JSU in the 2015 Dunn Hospitality Tournament, picking up a 3-0 win

• Southeast Missouri State went 1-2 in their first tournament - the Dr. Mary Jo Wynn Invitational in Springfield, Mo.
• The Redhawks dropped a hard-fought 3-2 match against DePaul, falling 15-13 in the fifth set, before earning a 3-1 win over Jacksonville
• SEMO finished the weekend with a 3-1 loss to host Missouri State

On the heels of the unveiling of the non-conference portion of the 2019-20 University of Evansville men’s basketball schedule, the Missouri Valley Conference announced the full league schedule on Tuesday afternoon.

Evansville is set to open its conference slate on New Year’s Eve in Springfield, Mo. where the Aces will face Missouri State.  In last year’s meeting at JQH Arena, Evansville earned its first road win of the season, taking a 70-64 decision.

Home league play commences on Saturday, January 4 against Valparaiso.  UE swept the season series against the Crusaders in 2018-19 including a 64-53 win at the Ford Center on February 2.  Another home game is on tap on Jan. 8 when defending MVC Tournament champion Bradley comes to town.  The Braves edged the Aces in Evansville last season by a final of 81-73.

On Saturday, Jan. 11, Evansville travels to Chicago to take on Loyola before making the short trek north on Highway 41 to play Indiana State on the 15th.  Two home games follow, beginning on Jan. 18 versus Missouri State.  It will be just a 19-day turnaround from the first to the second meeting against the Bears.  Another tough home game will see Drake come to town on the 22nd.  In last season’s meeting at the Ford Center, the Aces earned a thrilling 82-77 win in double overtime.

The month of January comes to an end with a pair of road games, starting with a contest on Sunday, Jan. 26 at Valparaiso.  In the regular-season finale last year, UE picked up a 65-63 win inside the ARC.  On the 29th, Evansville makes its way to Redbird Arena to face Illinois State.

Two home games begin the month of February, starting on Saturday, Feb. 1 against UNI.  Four days later, Southern Illinois heads to Evansville.  Three of the next four games will take place on the road, starting on Feb. 9 at Bradley.  Evansville is back home on the 12th to face Loyola.  The Aces had one of their top performances last season in the home win over the Ramblers, taking a 67-48 triumph.

Another Sunday road tilt is on tap on the 16th when UE heads to Drake to face the Bulldogs.  UE then treks to Carbondale, Ill. on Feb. 20 to face SIU.  Indiana State visits the Ford Center on Sunday, Feb. 23 before Evansville wraps up its road schedule at UNI on the 26th.  The Aces complete the regular season on Saturday, Feb. 29, welcoming Illinois State to the Ford Center.

Game times will be released once all TV games have been set in place.

After another strong performance in the net for the Aces, University of Evansville junior goalkeeper Michaela Till was named Missouri Valley Conference Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week, for the second time in her career, announced by the league office Tuesday afternoon.

In Thursday's match against UT Martin she recorded three massive second half saves to keep the Aces lead. In the 110-minute battle, the Avon, Ind. native allowed only one goal and posted four saves, off of 10 shots faced.

A rock in goal this season, Till has recorded 23 saves through three matches, keeping her on pace on the UE career saves list with 187, ranking sixth. Till ranks first in the MVC in saves (23) and saves per game (7.67) in the league this season.

The Aces take on SEMO on Friday, Sept. 6 at 6 p.m. on ESPN3 at McCutchan Stadium.
