The University of Evansville's Native Plant Garden in Koch Courtyard was used as a plant source for species for the NATIVE PLANT SALE Saturday, September 14 from 9 am to 2 pm at the Eykamp Scout Shelter. The sale is hosted by the Southwest Indiana Native Plant and Wildflower Society.

UE’s Native Plant Garden provides a venue where over 100 species of native flowers, grasses, shrubs, and trees can be viewed. This native plant diversity has great value for several reasons, including beneficial ecosystem services through improved ecosystem function, support for native insects (including insect herbivores and pollinators), and the food resources to other animals (e.g., birds via seeds and/or prey items). Unfortunately, habitat destruction has led to the loss of wetlands, prairies, and forests, resulting in reduced numbers of native plant species. As one would expect, the loss of floral diversity has caused a reduction in the number of herbivores and pollinators, and a reduction in ecosystem services. The University of Evansville’s native plant garden represents one effort to restore native plants.

Come visit the native plant garden throughout the fall. But also, go to the NATIVE PLANT SALE Saturday, September 14 from 9 am to 2 pm at the Eykamp Scout Shelter. The native plants you grow will be valuable as host plants for butterfly larvae, as well as beneficial to native bee pollinators. Bees are of special note because native bees are in critical need of help because of habitat loss and pesticides. Moreover, bees are wonderfully diverse, partitioning their niche space based on nesting habit, tongue length, and body size/color. Just in Indiana, 416 species of bees occur, including species from 6 different families.

Pepsi Beverages Company is the exclusive beverage provider for the University of Evansville and will continue to offer its well-known variety of products that include Pepsi, Mountain Dew, Dr. Pepper, Orange Crush, Sierra Mist, Gatorade, and RockStar along with other beverage products via vending machines, C-store, catering, concessions, and secure dining fountains. While there is a moderate vending price increase, it has been over five years since the last price increase.

In addition, there are some Pepsi beverage equipment changes/improvements including new beverage fountains in Ridgway, more glass front vending machines and all campus vending machines have been updated with digital credit card readers for added convenience.

Beginning, Monday, August 12, 2019, Parking Permit registration will be available online. There is a different process for full-time and part-time students.

Full-time Students
Students who are registered full-time (12 hours or more) will be provided a Parking Permit at no additional cost. Please make sure you have completed your class registration process before registering your vehicle online and collecting your permit.

To register your vehicle, go to the UE Self-Service portal and enter your UE username and password.

The Parking Permits link is under “UE Forms.” Click on the menu icon (upper left hand corner) > UE Forms > Student > Parking Permits. If you need assistance with accessing self-service, please contact the OTS help desk at 812-488-2077.

Fill out the registration form. Once you have registered your vehicle, proceed to the Permit Distribution location in the box below with your ID.

Part-time Students Students who are registered as part-time (less than 12 hours) will be charged $50 for a 2019-2020 Parking Permit.

To register your vehicle, go to the UE Self-Service portal selfservice.evansville.edu and enter your UE username and password.

The Parking Permits link is under “UE Forms.” Click on the menu icon (upper left hand corner) > UE Forms > Student > Parking Permits.

Fill out the registration form, print out the UE vehicle registration confirmation page, and take it to the cashier’s window at Student Financial Services. You can pay for the Parking Permit via your student account, or you can pay by cash/ check. Once payment is made, proceed to the Permit Distribution location in the box below with your ID and receipt.

Please note that permits are for the 2019-20 academic year. There are no refunds or pro-rated fees for partial academic years. There are no discounts or refunds for part-time students with UE plates.

Fraternity Parking Permits
All fraternity members who qualify for a Fraternity Parking Permit, must complete the vehicle registration process on-line and follow the same procedures as other students to obtain a parking permit from the Parking Permit Distribution Center. Students living in the Fraternity Complex (Sig Ep, FIJI, & Phi Tau) will be issued a Blue permit. Once the fraternity presidents have provided the Office of Safety and Security with the list of members who are to receive a yellow Fraternity Parking Permit, the student can exchange their assigned blue permit for the yellow Fraternity Parking Permit at the Office of Safety and Security.

All other fraternities (LXA, SAE, and TKE) will receive an orange permit.

Replacement Parking Permits
If you lose your Parking Permit, replacement Permits are $25 and must be paid for at the cashier’s window in Student Financial Services. Students can place the replacement charge on their student account, or pay with cash or check. Employees must pay with cash or check. Once the replacement Permit is paid for, you will be assigned a new permit.

Atefeh Yazdanparast, Associate Professor of Marketing, has a paper accepted for publication in Journal of Business Ethics, a highly ranked journal and one of the top 50 business journals used by Financial Times for research ranking.

The research, titled "Consequences of Moral Transgressions: How Regulatory Focus Orientation Motivates or Hinders Moral Decoupling," follows an experimental design approach and contributes to the moral reasoning literature on how brands can mitigate the impact of moral violations on consumer evaluations.

University of Evansville professors Mohammad K. Azarian and Thomas Josenhans were honored recently with the 2019 Sydney and Sadelle Berger Awards for Scholarly Activity and Service. They were presented with the awards by Charlie Berger during UE’s Fall Conference.

UE professor of mathematics Mohammad K. Azarian was given the Berger Award for Scholarly Activity. Azarian is a well-published professional who has significantly contributed to the research community and has worked at UE for 34 years.

He has published 42 peer-reviewed journal articles in four different areas of mathematics including group theory, number theory, combinatorics, and the history of mathematics.

He presented his research at 54 international, national, and regional conferences. In addition, he has published 82 problems in peer reviewed general mathematics journals in the United States and made over 1600 contributions to the On-Line Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences, including over 1000 new sequences.

Azarian has earned the respect of mathematics organizations and publications, who value his expertise and trust his judgment. He serves as a referee for the following journals:

• Missouri Journal of Mathematical Sciences
• Houston Journal of Mathematics
• College Mathematics Journal
• Jounral of Integer Sequences 
• Ars Combinatoria
• International Journal of Mathematics and Mathematical Sciences

He has served on the editorial boards of many prestigious journals and newsletters, and is a reviewer for the Mathematical Reviews of the American Mathematical Society (MathSciNet), the most prestigious and the authoritative gateway to the scholarly literature of mathematics in the world.

His remarkable research portfolio of 136 publications in the Google Scholar’s Citations system, and he was named a University of Evansville Global Scholar in 2007-2008.

From 2001 to 2007, he served on the Executive Board of the Mathematical Association of America- Indiana, where he was solely responsible for the Indiana College Mathematics Competition for all 40 colleges and universities in the state of Indiana.

In 2015, Azarian was one of only seven mathematicians in the United States who was selected to serve as a discipline peer reviewer for the Fulbright Scholar Program, sponsored by the United States Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, a position that he is still holding.

He is the recipient of the 2017 Mathematical Association of America-Indiana Distinguished Service Award, which recognizes a member for "extraordinary contributions and outstanding efforts" to mathematical sciences in America.

UE professor of music Thomas Josenhans was the recipient of the Berger Award for Service. Josenhans is fully committed to serving both UE and the greater community. One nominator says that he embodies the definition of a servant leader and truly has a servant’s heart.

During his nine years as chair of one of the largest and most diverse groups of faculty on campus, he has worked tirelessly to create opportunities to enhance the faculty and student experience. He has gone above and beyond to create a department that serves as a community resource and a showcase of arts in the community.

As part of this effort, he has cultivated positive relationships with area educators, providing financial and personal support of the Wesley Shepard Summer Music Camp which he has transformed into an annual high-quality experience for local and regional middle and high school students that serves as an invaluable recruiting tool.

Josenhans is an integral part of the Tri-State Community Ensemble Festival regional music educators' conferences, and weekend events such as Brass Day, Woodwind Day, Percussion Day and UE Opera events. He has provided support and found funding for campus appearances of world-class guest artists such as Doc Severinsen, Diane Shur, and Andre Watts. He has worked closely with the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra to consistently evaluate and improve the interwoven relationship of shared faculty and artists.

In addition, Josenhans has gone beyond his already heavy responsibilities as chair, to represent the University as chair of the Music Director Search Committee for the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra, a committee charged with selecting from over 200 applicants to find the 5 finalists who will guest conduct during the 2019-2020 season.

Two recent grants have specifically enhanced recruiting and current student opportunities. He wrote the request for a three-year grant to fund the new position of Music Outreach Director, with responsibilities to coordinate camp recruiting school visits. A second grant awarded during his leadership is from the Schmidt Foundation for the UE Opera Series. This grant has been renewed annually and has allowed UE Opera to mount larger productions and schedule outreach visits to area schools.

This year’s recipient has also been a dynamic influence in a steady period of growth, positivity, and tangible financial support from the Friends of UE Music. This organization includes a growing membership of alumni, faculty, UE student families, and members of the greater Evansville community.

Nominators also want to specifically recognize this year’s recipient for his work in creating and developing the UE Music Strategic Plan. He guided and mentored those working on this collaborative effort for more than a year.

Through all of this, he gives selflessly of his time and energy because of his genuine love and devotion to his department and University. His door is always open to faculty and students where each one is heard compassionately, validated and supported with kindness and integrity. 

As part of his sabbatical Dr. David Green (Harlaxton College) has published two articles: ‘The Secular Orders: Chivalry in the Service of the State’, in A Companion to Chivalry, ed. R. Jones and P. Coss (Boydell Press, 2019), pp. 57-68; and ‘Edward the Black Prince: Lordship and Administration in the Plantagenet Empire’, in Ruling Fourteenth-Century England: Essays in Honour of Christopher Given-Wilson, ed. R. Ambuhl et al. (Boydell Press, 2019), pp. 185-204. He has also co-edited a collection of essays with C. Given-Wilson, Fourteenth Century England XI (Boydell Press, 2019).

A big thanks to everyone who was able to attend the Fall conference session on Harlaxton. It was an informative, lively conversation that truly shows the love on campus for the Harlaxton program.

We heard from many participants that they would like more time to discuss and understand the work of the Harlaxton 2070 group. We would like to offer this on August 23rd at 3pm in the Vectren Board Room. The team will be available to review the fall conference update for those who weren’t able to attend and to continue discussions.

With one more spot to fill on his coaching staff, University of Evansville head men’s basketball coach Walter McCarty has announced the addition of Bennie Seltzer as an assistant coach with the Purple Aces program.

Seltzer spent the previous two seasons as an assistant coach at his alma mater – Washington State.  The native of Birmingham, Ala. brings extensive regional and national experience to the UE program.

“We are excited to welcome Bennie to the Aces family.  He brings a wealth of experience as a player, assistant coach and head coach to our program,” McCarty said.  “Bennie’s pedigree is exactly what we were looking for in filling the final coaching spot on our staff.  He has many ties to the Midwest and will be a huge asset to our program.”

Prior to his time at WSU, Seltzer spent two seasons on the staff at Loyola with head coach Porter Moser.  In 2016-17, the Ramblers defeated Washington State in the Paradise Jam.

Seltzer had two stints at Indiana University with Coach Tom Crean.  He was an assistant coach with the Hoosiers from 2008 through 2012 before rejoining the IU staff as the Director of Player Performance in 2014.  In his time in Bloomington, Seltzer helped the Hoosiers recruit some of the top talent in the country including Victor Oladipo and Christian Watford.  The Hoosiers spent 10 weeks ranked atop the polls in 2012-13 and earned a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament.

In 2012, Seltzer was named the head coach of Samford University in his home town of Birmingham.  In just two seasons, Seltzer recruited two Southern Conference Freshmen of the Year in Tim Williams and Isaiah Williams.

His coaching career began in in 1997 as an assistant at the University of Oklahoma.  He worked with the Sooners until 2006 when he joined Coach Crean’s staff at Marquette.  He remained with the Golden Eagles until 2008 when he joined the Hoosiers.

As a player at Washington State, Seltzer made a lasting impact on the Cougar program.  Playing from 1990 through 1993, Seltzer accumulated 473 assists, a total that continues to sit atop the program record book.  At the time of his graduation, he ranked second with 1,423 points and third in career steals and minutes played.  As a senior, he was named a First Team All-Pac 10 player while averaging 17.9 points per game.  He was inducted into the Pac-12 Men’s Basketball Hall of Honor in 2015.

Know the Aces

Purple Aces return 85 percent of their scoring from 2018, with Emily Ormson and Maggie Leazer returning after leading the team in goal scoring a year ago.

All-MVC second and all-freshman team member Emily Wolak returns along with MVC honorable mention honoree Michaela Till in goal for the Purple Aces.

Emily Wolak represented the Purple Aces on the Missouri Valley preseason all-conference team. The Rochester, N.Y. native saw action in 19 games in 2018, posting her first career goal against Tennessee Tech and added seven shots with six aimed at goal.

Evansville was bolstered by solid goalkeeping by Michaela Till. Posting five shutouts, 105 saves .and a 1.23 goals-against-average, which ranked toward the top of the MVC.

Evansville went 1-1-1 in exhibition action with a win over Canisius. The Aces scored three goals in the three game preseason.

Emily Ormson and Alex Eyler recorded goals in the 2-1 win over Canisius last Tuesday (Aug. 13).

The Aces closed out preseason with a 2-1 loss to Eastern Illinois. Emily Ormson scored the lone goal off an assist from Emily Olson. UE had five shots with two on goal, while Michaela Till added two saves during the match.

Middle Tennessee split their two exhibition matches against Northern Kentucky and Lipscomb. MTSU took a 2-1 win over Northern Kentucky, while falling 4-1 against Lipscomb last Friday (Aug. 16).

The Aces finished the 2018 season with a 1-0 loss against No. 2 Drake in double overtime in the semifinals of the MVC Championships.

Evansville advanced to the semifinals after winning 3-2 in PKs over No. 3 seed UNI with Amanda DaSilva converting the go ahead PK.

A familiar face will be back on the sidelines as Chris Pfau was named assistant coach on May 15. Pfau returns to Evansville after serving as the Purple Aces head coach from 2005-07.

The Purple Aces were picked sixth in the MVC preseason poll, voted on by the coaches.
