Upcoming Events

* United Way Day of Caring Sign Up Is Underway

Each year UE supports United Way by allowing employees to volunteer during business hours on the United Way Day of Caring. This year it is Friday, Sept. 9. UE employees who are interested in participating are asked to complete the volunteer form at this link. Employees DO need supervisor approval, but are not required to take leave time to participate. UE will volunteer again this year with Evansville ARC and ARC Industries on several projects. The projects are listed on the volunteer form. Please indicate your preference of projects and we will try to accommodate your choice. UE has been a proud leader in Day of Caring participation in past years. This year President Tom and Dr. Sharon Kazee will be joining our team and they encourage your participation. We would like to have many more volunteers to join us this year!

All Day of Caring workers are invited to an early morning breakfast at the Centre before starting work. Evansville ARC and United Way greatly appreciate your time, hard work, and willingness to serve our community.  Thank you!
Please fill out the volunteer form and return it to Brian Conner in Ridgway University Center, room 229, by Aug. 10 (if you want to be able to choose your T-shirt size) and no later than Aug. 29 (your choice of T-shirt size can not be guaranteed).

Dowload the form here, or if you have questions, pelase contact Brian at 1107 or bc32@evansville.edu.

Info You Should Know

* Scheduled Power Outage

A power outage affecting parts of campus has been scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 11 from 4 a.m. to 6 a.m. in order to perform switch gear maintenance.  The following buildings will be without power during the outage:  Graves Hall, Carson Center, McCutchan Stadium, Hyde Hall, Shanklin Theatre, Krannert Hall of Fine Arts, Schroeder Family School of Business Administration Building, and Olmsted Hall.  Please contact the Physical Plant service desk at ext. 2775 if assistance is needed to accommodate the outage.

* Datatel and WebAdvisor to Shut Down Tonight

Tonight, starting at 5 p.m., Fiscal Affairs will be performing the year-end closing of the financials. In order to ensure that this process has no issues, all Datatel users are asked to refrain from using the system past 5 p.m. this evening until the process is complete. This includes WebAdvisor, which will be turned off at that time.  Please let all users in your areas know about this request. If for some reason you have a legitimate business need to continue using Datatel or WebAdvisor past 5 p.m., please contact OTS Business Systems Manager Bob Szurgot as soon as possible at 488-2411.

* Health Tip: Grab a Date to Shrink your Plate

Eating out this week? Cut calories and fat by splitting oversized portions with a friend. If you’re dining solo, choose a healthful appetizer or two side dishes instead. Your meal will be better for you and just as satisfying. If you have questions about healthy eating, visit the nurse on Thursday, Aug. 11, in Ridgway University Center lobby from 9–11 a.m.

* Robert Dion

Dr. Robert Dion of the Department of Law, Politics, and Society was one of two commentators interviewed by Radio-Canada on Monday to get their analysis of the likely political and economic effects of the recent debt ceiling crisis and the downgrading of America’s credit rating by Standard and Poor’s.

The radio program, Le National, devoted a bloc of 11 minutes to an in-depth analysis of the economic and political woes facing the United States.

Dion was interviewed live and in French to discuss the political consequences of the stalemate in Washington, and his remarks were aired nationwide across Canada.

The other person interviewed for this particular story was the Honorable Paul Martin, former Prime Minister of Canada, former Finance Minister in the cabinet of Jean Chretien, and former leader of the Liberal Party of Canada.

Dion also appeared in a story in last Sunday’s edition of the Indianapolis Star, in which he discussed the effects on Indiana lawmakers of the vote on the debt ceiling compromise.
