Upcoming Events

* Welcome Week University Worship this Sunday in Neu Chapel!

Welcome Week University Worship kicks off the academic year in Neu Chapel this Sunday at 10:30 a.m. The campus community is invited to attend as we celebrate the beginning of a new year and welcome students to UE! Join us for a little jazz in the midst of Christian community with a message that asks the question: "Who Are You?" All are welcome! As always, Donut Bank donut balls and coffee are available at 10:00 a.m.

 
* The Talking Dead in the Middle Ages

Annette Parks, professor of history, will be presenting “The Talking Dead” on Saturday, August 23 at 2:00 at the Evansville Museum as part of their Super Saturday activities. The August Super Saturday program has a medieval theme and will include a variety of activities from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Parks’ lecture will examine some medieval ideas and practices surrounding corpses – especially those of the wealthy and powerful. Admission to the lecture (and other activities) is free with Museum admission. 

 
* Catholic Mass for Welcome Week this Sunday

The first Catholic Mass of the school year in Neu Chapel will be this Sunday at 1:00 pm. This week's celebrant will be Fr. Christopher Droste, associate pastor of Annunciation Parish in Evansville. Interested in singing with the choir? Practice is before Mass at noon in the chapel. Everyone is welcome!

Mass is offered weekly in Neu Chapel by the Newman Catholic Student Center. For more information, contact Newman Center director Mike Roesch at mr201.
 

 
* UEAAA Welcome Reception for African-American UE Students

UE African American Alumni (UEAAA) Welcome Reception for African-American Students will be held on Saturday, August 23, from noon to 2:00 p.m in the Bernhardt Atrium, Schroeder School of Business Building.  Desserts, fruit, and drinks will be provided!  Community vendors and campus groups will have important information tables from 11:00 a.m. to noon, in the same area!  President Kazee will give a welcome!

The current list of community and campus organizations that will be available include: 1) Old National Bank (Student checking, savings, loans, and internship and part-time job opportunities), 2) Stephanie Terry (voter registration), 3) Omega Psi Phi Fraternity (historical black fraternity), 4) Kappa Alpha Psi (historical black fraternity), 5) Little Valley Miss. Baptist Church (place of worship and fellowship), 6), McFarland Missionary Baptist Church (place of worship and fellowship), 7) Barnes House of Fame and Eastview Church (haircare for men and women and place of worship and fellowship), 8) Black Student Union (information only), 9) Office of Diversity Initiatives: Anti-Bias Training Course (information only) and 10) Recreation Center (information only).

* New Satellite Copier Instructions

Basic instructions for the recently installed new Xerox satellite copiers (Workcentre 5335 and 5845) on campus are now available on the AceLink Copy Services’ website under Forms & Instructions under Satellite Copier Instructions. For questions, contact the Office of Administrative Services at extension 2941. 

 
* Bookstore Weekend Hours

The UE Bookstore will have special hours this weekend, Aug 23 and 24. Open Saturday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Sunday, Noon to 3 pm. Remember if you're picking up reservations or prepaid orders you MUST bring your student ID with you. 

 
* Libraries Announces Autumn Semester Hours

UE Libraries will observe the following schedule of hours during Autumn Semester 2014.

Monday: 7:30 a.m. - 12 Midnight
Tuesday: 7:30 a.m. - 12 Midnight
Wednesday: 7:30 a.m. - 12 Midnight
Thursday: 7:30 a.m. - 12 Midnight
Friday: 7:30 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.
Saturday: 10:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.
Sunday : 12 Noon - 12 Midnight

Exceptions to regular hours will be announced in advance.

* Discounted Parking Permits for UE License Plate Holders

Students, faculty, administrators, and staff who sport the UE State of Indiana license plate in 2014 (new and renewal plates) will receive a $25 discount off the UE parking permit fee for 2014-15. The registration process for the plates is now handled through the state. If you want to purchase or renew a UE plate, visit www.in.gov/bmv/2744.htm. If you already have your 2014 UE plate, bring your State of Indiana vehicle registration to the Office of Safety and Security when you purchase your parking permit for the new academic year. If you have not registered your vehicle yet, you will need to pay the full parking permit fee and then bring your registration to the Office of Safety and Security to get a credit for $25. * Plikuhn Presents at American Sociological Association Annual Meetings

Mari Plikuhn, assistant professor of sociology, presented "Teaching Difficult Topics" at the American Sociological Association Section on Teaching and Learning pre-conference teaching workshop on Friday, August 15. Additionally, Plikuhn presented her paper "Core Concepts of Sociology and Reflections on the Major: A Senior Capstone Project" at the ASA annual meetings on Tuesday, August 19.

This conference participation was partially supported by a grant from the Eykamp Center for Teaching Excellence. 

 
* Atefeh Yazdanparast Has Paper Accepted for Presentation and Publication

Atefeh Yazdanparast, assistant professor of marketing, has had a paper titled “Facebook Boredom: A Preliminary Analysis” accepted for presentation and publication in the proceedings of the 2014 Society for Marketing Advances Annual Conference. The research borrows from uses and gratification and boredom theories to identify and examine motivations, attitudes, and boredom states toward Facebook and marketing efforts on this massive social networking site. The results provide a better understanding of factors influencing Facebook boredom and have significant implications for digital marketers and advertisers who use paid advertising to facilitate sharing of their commercial message through Facebook. 

 
* Mike Zimmer Has Article Published in Applied Economics

Mike Zimmer, Guthrie May Endowed Professor of Business, has had an article published in the current issue of Applied Economics (Vol 46, August 2014). The article, entitled "Approval of Social Security Disability Appeals: Analysis of Judges’ Decisions", is coauthored with Robert Nakosteen of the University of Massachusetts. 

 

Athletics

* Men's Basketball to Hold Advanced Skills Camp

On Sunday, August 24, the University of Evansville men’s basketball program will hold an Advanced Skills Camp at the Fifth Third Basketball Practice Facility on the UE campus.

The 2014 Evansville Advanced Skills Camp will focus on fundamental skill work, drills to improve your offensive game and defensive concepts. In addition, players will be instructed by the Evansville coaching staff and players.

Other items include individual skill development, full court drill work and team games. Registration takes place at 11:30 a.m. and runs until 4:45 p.m.

Cost of the camp is $35 and is open to any high school student-athlete. Space for the camp is limited. For more information or to sign up, please contact assistant coach Carson Harris at 812-488-2297 or ch225@evansville.edu.
