* From President Kazee:

What do UE and architect Frank Lloyd Wright have in common?

Wright’s protege, William Wesley “Wes” Peters (1912-1991) studied civil engineering at Evansville College in the late 1920s.  Shortly thereafter, Peters became Wright’s favorite assistant, working with him on his well-known buildings such as Fallingwater and the Guggenheim Museum.

The University of Evansville may have a unique opportunity to acquire an important historic architectural treasure, a house linked to Frank Lloyd Wright via UE’s own Wes Peters. I wanted to make you aware of this possibility and invite you to participate in upcoming discussions.

This special house was built by William Wesley “Wes” Peters. Peters’ only hiatus from Wright’s Taliesen studio occurred between 1933 and 1935, when he returned to Evansville and built two homes. One of these homes still survives at 1506 E. Indiana, but is one of the top ten endangered historical properties in Indiana. This building is particularly significant because it shares key architectural features with Wright’s grander structures yet it was designed for affordability. It is considered to be the prototype for Wright’s celebrated Usonian houses.

UE has been approached about the possibility of relocating this diminutive 525 square foot structure to our campus. A turnkey opportunity exists for acquiring this cultural asset with outside funding for the purchase, relocation, and renovation already in place.  This prospect would enhance the cultural appeal of our campus. It would also honor an Evansville native who attended Evansville College and was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Evansville in 1971.

To learn more about this exciting project, attend an informational meeting on Friday, May 9 at 2 pm in Koch 255.
