The University of Evansville’s Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Program Committee is preparing for its 2014 Martin Luther King, Jr. Annual Celebration.
This will be the University’s 26th annual celebration of the life and legacy of Dr. King.
The Lectureship keynote speaker, will be Mr. Daryl Davis on Monday, January 20 at 7:00 pm in Eykamp 251 in Ridgway University Center. Mr. Davis is an author and musician who discusses his extraordinary journey into the heart of one of America's most fanatical institutions the Ku Klux Klan. The lecture will be the culmination of the day’s events which include a rally and march beginning at 1:30 pm in the Schroeder School of Business Administration Building Atrium. There will be free hot chocolate and coffee and the March will end at 3:00 pm at the Ridgway University Center in front of The Race Experience Kiosk followed by a reading of the Martin Luther King Day Proclamation by Mayor Lloyd Winnecke.
The Race Experience Kiosk will be available for all campus members from Monday, January 20 at 3:00 pm until Friday, January 24, at 4:00 pm. At the kiosk, campus members will have the opportunity to experience another race in your face, literally. The Race Experience asks participants, what is race? The kiosk further explains that thanks to advances in genetics, history and anthropology, we now know: not one characteristic, trait or gene distinguishes all the members of one so-called race from all non-members. Our popular notions of race are cultural. Campus members will enjoy the interactive learning experience about race and diversity. There is also a packet of resource tools that may be helpful to use in classroom lectures or to supplement other programs. If you are interested please contact LaNeeca Williams for those tools.
There will be a Martin Luther King, Jr. Leadership Empowerment Conference on Tuesday, January 14 and Wednesday, January 15 that will feature campus and community leaders providing educational sessions called TEACH-INs. Teach-Ins are meant to be practical, participatory, and oriented toward action. The Teach-In sessions will consist of debates, lectures, and movies in three tracks called Inspirational Leadership, Personal Leadership, and Active Leadership. The conference will be from 6:00 pm until 10:00 pm both nights and participants will be required to attend at least three sessions to earn a Leadership Certificate from the Office of Diversity Initiatives.
We hope that you accept this invitation or invite others to participate in the various events celebrating Dr. King’s legacy and life. For more information contact LaNeeca Williams at ext. 2413 or via email at lw161@evansville.edu or check out the Office of Diversity Initiatives link at http://www.evansville.edu/offices/diversity/mlk.cfm.
