Info You Should Know

* Reminder of Campus Lockdown Protocol

In light of recent incidents at several colleges and universities across the country, we want to remind you of the University Lockdown Protocol in the event of an emergency.  Please read the information carefully as it could be the difference between your safety and the safety of others.

In the case of a potential threat to the campus community, a campus-wide lockdown order may be given at the request of local law enforcement or campus security officials. To maximize the safety of individuals, once the doors are locked, they will not be reopened under any circumstances until law enforcement or UE Security issues an official “all clear.” During a lockdown, all electronic locking door systems will be manually locked meaning University I.D. access cards will not work.

To maximize your safety during a lockdown, please consider the following recommendations:

If the threat is outside of buildings or in the neighborhood…
• If in a classroom, remain there and take shelter.  If the door has an internal lock, lock it. Those in common areas of the building should immediately move into a classroom or other safe area if possible.

• If in an administrative building, remain in or proceed to a room and take shelter. If the door has an internal lock, lock it.

• If in a residence hall, remain in or proceed to your room, lock door, and take shelter. Those in common areas should attempt to move into a room or other safe area if possible.

• If you are outdoors on campus grounds, take shelter as best as possible or proceed off campus.

If the threat is from a person known or believed to be inside a building…
• Consider the above recommendations

• Additionally, turn ringers and other tones off on cellphones and turn off lights.

Remember: All exterior doors to buildings will be locked. Card access will be shut off.  Use your best judgment in determining the safest course of action to protect yourself.

All University emergency notifications are distributed to the campus community via Ace Alerts. If you have not signed up for Ace Alerts, you can register through Acelink. This will ensure you receive emergency notifications via text message and e-mail. You can also get alerts by following @AceAlerts on Twitter and liking the Ace Alerts Facebook page.

For additional information regarding campus emergency protocols, visit http://www.evansville.edu/safety/

* Payal Patel-Dovlatabadi featured in this month's Evansville Business Journal

The director of UE’s Public Health Program, Dr. Payal Patel-Dovlatabadi, is featured in a section called “Fresh Faces” in this month’s Evansville Business Journal. This is a link to the article: http://www.courierpress.com/news/2013/nov/04/its-not-really-work-its-my-passion/

Patel-Dovlatabadi finds her way as director of public health at the University of Evansville
Pam Cassady, special to EBJ
Evansville Courier & Press

Payal Patel-Dovlatabadi learned about hard work early in life.

Her parents ran a gas station and hotel in the small town of Red Bay, Ala., where she grew up. As a child, she wanted to be a mathematician, so around seventh grade, she started doing the accounting for the family businesses.

“And I worked at the gas station,” Patel-Dovlatabadi said. At the time, she wasn’t always happy about all she had to do.

“I would complain about having to work,” she said. “But now, looking back, I’m so thankful. I thank my parents for instilling that work ethic in me.”

That work ethic has already taken Patel-Dovlatabadi quite far, and today she is an assistant professor of public health and director of the public health program at the University of Evansville.

Patel-Dovlatabadi began her journey to becoming a college professor at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. When she first arrived on campus, she decided to major in math, but her interests changed over the years.

“In my third year, I was becoming more interested in health,” Patel-Dovlatabadi said. She had switched her major to psychology and earned her bachelor’s in only three years. As she neared graduation, she decided to go on to a double master’s degree program offered by UAB. She earned a master of public health degree as well as a master of business administration degree.

While working on her double master’s, Patel-Dovlatabadi was a teaching assistant and conducted research. It was then that she really began to consider a life in academia.

“The research was great,” Patel-Dovlatabadi said. “I started to think that I wanted to teach and do research.”

The work ethic Patel-Dovlatabadi learned as a child really kicked in as she decided to continue her education and go on to earn a doctorate in public health at UAB.

“I didn’t have much free time,” Patel-Dovlatabadi said of her years at UAB. “I didn’t even have a summer off.”

But she did have at least enough free time during her first year of the doctorate program to meet the man who would later become her husband. She married Sorush Dovlatabadi, and as she neared graduation, the young couple began looking for a place to begin their life together.

Patel-Dovlatabadi saw that the University of Evansville had an opening for director of a newly created public health program and was interested in that position. Her husband, who had an interest in farming, came with her to Evansville for the interview.

“As we were about to land at the airport, he saw all the farmland below and said, ‘You’ve got to get this job,’ ” Patel-Dovlatabadi said.

She did get the job, and they moved to Evansville in 2011. They have quickly settled in to the new community and enjoy living here.

“We love going to the Evansville orchestra,” Patel-Dovlatabadi said. “And we really enjoy going to the Newburgh Farmers Market.”

They also enjoy walking and hiking, sometimes taking along their dog, Chance. And having grown up in the warmer climate of Alabama, Patel-Dovlatabadi said she even enjoys putting on layers of clothes on the cold winter days.

At the University of Evansville, Patel-Dovlatabadi has enjoyed developing the public health program from the ground up.

“The university did not have a public health major when I was hired,” Patel-Dovlatabadi said. She began by teaching three public health courses that first fall. Then, in February 2012, the major was officially approved.

“Since then, it’s been an amazing journey,” Patel-Dovlatabadi said.

As she works to build the program, Patel-Dovlatabadi also promotes public health on campus and in the community.

“I try to get students together to do things,” she said. “And I always try to promote health and nutrition on campus.”

Patel-Dovlatabadi reaches out to the community as a public health expert and has been interviewed on several topics including influenza, the cyclospora outbreak and fungal meningitis.

And in only her second year at the university, Patel-Dovlatabadi was named a University of Evansville Global Scholar, which meant she traveled to India to do a comparative analysis of the health care system there and in the U.S.

“I stay busy,” Patel-Dovlatabadi said. “But I tell people that when I go to work, it’s not really work. It’s my passion.”
