Leland Dierks, graphic artist in the Office of Publications, has received the October 2013 IMPACT Employee of the Month award. Leland came to UE in June 1997 and has developed a reputation for being talented at his job and a pleasure to work with. Some of the words used to describe Leland include “patient”, “efficient”, “kind” and “unflappable”. Those nominating Leland also remarked on his invaluable services to the University for book design, flyer creation, and countless other important, complicated and time-sensitive projects. His role in designing materials for the institution is considered vital for the recruitment of students. Thank you, Leland, for your willingness to work together for the greater good.

The Office of Academic Affairs and the Department of Religious Life are pleased to welcome Assistant Professor of Physics Angie Reisetter and Assistant Professor of Japanese Fusae Ekida to the Faith and Faculty Forum series this Friday, October 4 at 4:00 p.m., Room 172, Schroeder Family School of Business Building. Reisetter will present "The Bahá’í Faith Tradition," and Ekida will complement the Forum with her experiences in the Bahá’í tradition.

The monthly Forum provides an informal venue where UE faculty can present and offer reflections about their own faith traditions/religious practices and engage the University community in informal dialogue. Each forum lasts 50 minutes, 4:00 pm - 4:50 pm including time for Q & A.

By highlighting the religious diversity of our faculty, we aim to demonstrate the variety and richness of traditions represented on our campus. The forums will also encourage students and the campus community to widen their understanding of and respect for traditions different from their own.

As an institution affiliated with The United Methodist Church, we want to continually affirm our call to initiate and promote better relationships between Christians and people of other faiths based on informed understanding, critical appreciation, and balanced perspective. Interfaith discussions can make religion a bridge and not a barrier toward a peaceful world. The guest speaker for Creative Writing Coffee Hour on Thursday, October 3 will be Jane Friedman. The lecture is set for 4:00 p.m. in the Melvin Peterson Gallery. Friedman, a 1998 graduate of the University of Evansville, is web editor of the Virginia Quarterly Review, where she leads online and digital content strategy. She also teaches digital publishing at the University of Virginia. Before joining VQR, she was the publisher of Writer’s Digest and an assistant professor of e-media at the University of Cincinnati. Her expertise on the transformation of the publishing industry has been featured throughout many events and media, including NPR’s Morning Edition, Publishers Weekly, South by Southwest, Nieman Journalism Lab, and AWP. Friedman writes her own blog at JaneFriedman.com, as well as at various industry sites like Publishing Perspectives and Digital Book World.

Commencement Central for all DECEMBER graduates will be Thursday, October 24 from 10 a.m.to 4 p.m. The event will take place in the Ridgway University Center just outside of the UE Bookstore. ALL graduates should stop by to finalize their graduation plans to make sure everything is in order. The Registrar, Alumni, and Career Planning offices will all be present. Graduates can also purchase their cap and gown, and order graduation announcements if desired. It only takes a few minutes and graduates can stop by anytime during the event. Starting September 29 and continuing throughout the semester, the Libraries will remain open and fully staffed until 1 am Sundays-Thursdays. This extension gives students’ another 5 hours per week to prepare and study for classes, conduct research and collaborate in groups. Douglas Reed, University Organist/Professor Emeritus of Music, was a featured performer for the Eastman Rochester Organ Initiative (EROI) Festival 2013, SPECTRUM OF SOUND: Aspects of Organ Music Since 1940, held September 26-29 at the Eastman School of Music of the University of Rochester www.esm.rochester.edu/eroi/. Dr. Reed shared a program of music by eminent American composers William Albright and William Bolcom with David Higgs, chair of the organ department at the Eastman School of Music, and Nathan Laube, Eastman professor of organ. Dr. Reed gave the Eastman premiere of two works by William Albright (1944-1998): Whistler (1834-1903): Three Nocturnes (1989) and Chorale Prelude, the unpublished fifth movement of Albright’s Organbook (1967). Reed discovered the manuscript of Three Nocturnes among Albright’s papers in the Bentley Historical Library at the University of Michigan and prepared a performance score for the Eastman concert and his recent faculty recital at the University of Evansville.

A book edited by Assistant Professor of Education Matthew Knoester, International Struggles for Critical Democratic Education, has just received a 2013 Critics Choice Book Award from the American Educational Studies Association (AESA). This award recognizes "outstanding books that may be of interest to those in educational studies."

Fourteen members of the Cognitive Science and Neuroscience Research Group and Nu Rho Psi Honors Neuroscience Society attended the Midwest/Great Lakes Research Symposia (mGluRs) at Wabash College, Saturday, September 28. Morgan Brown presented Reserch Methods study. Marianne Marcotte, Kelsey Edens, Karolina Toth, Mariah Gardiner, Natasha James, Michael Bryan, Anna Maurer-Batjer, Rebecca Gervasio, Sarah O'Brein, Kasey Michel, Evan Meiman, Nick Morgan and Tyler Perry.

Associate Professor of Biology Cris Hochwender was the invited speaker at the Hendricks County Master Gardener's Adventures in Gardening seminar on September 28. Hochwender's presentation, titled, 'Restoration of Native Plant Diversity: Feed Your Eyes in Your Own Backyard,' discussed the efforts being invested in restoration ecology at the University of Evansville. Specifically, Hochwender discussed efforts to reintroduce native plants to Vectren Conservation Park (the Environmental Studies Program's 1100 acre research property). In addition to exploring the approaches used for restoring the site, he also discussed which native plants master gardener's might choose for their backyards--which plants would be attractive, recruit pollinators, and/or recruit interesting herbivores. In addition, he participated in a panel discussion exploring the challenges of meeting the food needs of the planet.

Anthony Beavers, professor of philosophy and Chair of the Department of Philosophy and Religion, will be speaking at the 2014 Humanities Education and Research Association meeting in Washington, D.C. this coming February. The theme of the conference is "Humane, Inhumane, Human." The title of Beavers' talk is "The Crisis of Value in the Information Age: Information Reductionism and the Nihilism of the Present Day." The abstract is as follows:

"This presentation will explore the role that information and communications technologies (ICTs) are having on our sense of value," says Beavers. "Correlating to the rapid acceleration in the storage and transmission speed of information and the sudden proliferation of ubiquitous computational technologies, we have witnessed an increase in teen suicides, mass shootings, and political polarization that is antithetical to solving these and other important problems. The reason for this, I will argue, is that our equation of knowledge with “being informed” leads us to underestimate the value of curiosity, wisdom, wondering and practical reason, while, at the same time, creating a climate which has made being informed nearly impossible.

With the collapse of our access to the truth, we are suffering from a correlative access to value. Collectively, we know there are problems, but we are short on specifics and overwhelmed to the point of inaction. The question hanging in the balance is whether the use of information technologies can lead us to the solidarity of human community needed to address important issues or whether it is creating information silos that promote escapism and ignorance. While there are prospects for the former, the latter seems to be winning the day. In the end, I will address the question of whether this historical trajectory is stoppable, or whether our ICTs are leading us into areas we would not otherwise wish to go, were we adequately informed."

Congratulations to Brooke Mickens '11, director of Ticketing and Athletic Event Operations on her marriage to Ryan Mickens on September 21 in Evansville. The two met six years ago at UE.

UE Creative Writing Professor Rob Griffith and creative writing alum and FYS Instructor Katie Mullins gave a reading Friday as part of Fourth Friday Writers’ Coffeehouse, an outreach of The Riverbend Review: Art and Literary Magazine of Henderson Community College.

Since May, UE creative writing alum and FYS Instructor Katie Mullins has had two chapbooks place as semifinalists - her poetry chapbook, Apostrophes, with Casey Shay Press, and her fiction chapbook, Caravan of Predators, with Ropewalk's Fiction Chapbook Competition. She has had 15 poems accepted at magazines such as Harpur Palate, The Lyric, Poetry Quarterly, and Midwestern Gothic, and she gave a reading for Midwestern Gothic in Indianapolis. Mullins has also had one essay and one flash fiction piece published and, most recently, had a short story, "Dark Room," picked up by The Quotable.

Professor of Finance Walayet A. Khan has published a paper co-authored with Joao Vieito of the University of Portugal (Porto) titled, “CEO Gender and Firm Performance” in the Spring, 2013 issue of the Journal of Economics and Business.
Dr. Khan was appointed as an external assessor (referee) to examine the quality of the financial research produced at University Tecknologi MARA, Malaysia and was appointed as an international advisory Editorial Board member of The Journal of Emerging Economics and Islamic Research.

The general public will have its first opportunity to see the Fifth Third Bank Basketball Practice Facility and Carson Center enhancements as the University of Evansville athletics department will hold an open house on Thursday, October 3.

Set to begin at 6 p.m., the open house will allow fans to view several new additions to the Carson Center as well as a look at the new practice facility that is connected. Among the upgrades to the Carson Center are the new hallway displays for each of UE’s 14 sports as well as the new Interactive Hall of Fame Exhibit.

The event is free to all and will feature great prizes as well as light refreshments. The prizes include two tickets to the Aces game at Indiana, two floor seats to the home game against Butler, four suite tickets to a men’s basketball game of your choice and more! This will be the first chance that fans can have at purchasing 5-packs for this season as the ticket office in the Carson Center will be open throughout the event. Aces fans, the men’s soccer team is in action at McCutchan Stadium tonight - Tuesday, October 1 - at 7:00 pm as the Aces host in-state rival No. 23 Butler. Butler is the second nationally ranked opponent the Aces will have faced at home, as they previously knocked off #6 Saint Louis 2-1 in double overtime on September 11.
