* Aces Baseball Signs Clay O'Neal

University of Evansville head coach of baseball Wes Carroll has added one more to his 2012 roster with the signing of right-handed pitcher Clay O’Neal (Russiaville, Ind./Western) to a National Letter of Intent.

“We were very fortunate to find such a quality pitcher in the late signing period,” said Carroll. “Clay O’Neal has a high ceiling and a tremendous amount of potential.  I look forward to seeing him develop on our pitching staff and compete in an Aces uniform next year.”

A three sport standout and two-way player for Western High School, O’Neal was named all-conference, Howard County all-star, and Defensive Player of the Year in 2010, leading his team to a 20-6 record, sectional championship and trip to the regional finals. He hurled 36.1 innings with a 2.50 ERA, while hitting .419 with 27 runs scored and four home runs.

O’Neal also piloted his American Legion team to an Indiana State Championship victory in 2009 and second-place finish in 2010, batting .431 with a 2.89 ERA in his career with the squad. In the ’09 title game, the 6’1 pitcher went 4-for-4 with two home runs, a triple, and a double, while also picking up the win on the mound.

“I chose UE because it has my major as well as a great baseball team,” said O’Neal. “I feel like my future at UE will be full of success.”

O’Neal joins fall signees Kyle Freeland (Denver, Colo./Thomas Jefferson), Kameron Wright (Lockbourne, Ohio/Hamilton Township), Parker Asmann (Hawthorn Woods, Ill./Lake Zurich), Conor Gilligan (Loveland, Ohio/St. Xavier), Kyle Schwinghamer (Ferdinand, Ind./Forrest Park) and David Luciani (Madison, Wis./Memorial) as the newest members of the UE baseball program.

* UE Has MVC Scholar Athlete Siblings

Not to be outdone by his sister, Maggie, University of Evansville junior Griffin Wood today became the second member of the family chosen as a Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete.

Griffin was selected as one of nine members on the 2011 MVC Men's Golf Scholar-Athlete Team, one week after older sister Maggie was selected for the Women's Golf Scholar-Athlete Team.  It's the first time in University of Evansville history that siblings have earned MVC scholar-athlete honors.  A Management major with a 3.35 grade point average, Wood was UE's number one golfer in the spring with a 73.92 average, and finished a close second to teammate Michael Sainz with a 74.30 average for the entire 2010-11 season.  Sainz was one of three Honorable Mention selections on the scholar-athlete team.  Also a junior, Sainz is a Mechanical Engineering major with a 3.28 GPA.  Both Wood and Sainz are on target to produce two of the three lowest career stroke averages at UE since 1990 when they embark on their senior year this fall.

Ace Player of the Week
Senior Cody Fick led Evansville with a .588 batting average on the week, going 10-for-17 with five runs scored and five runs batted in. Fick belted three doubles, increasing his total to 18 on the season, and recorded multi-hit games in all four contests, totaling 25 multi-hit games on the year. In UE’s win over Oakland City, Fick went 2-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored, knocking in the first of the game and scoring the winning run. Fick led the Aces with four hits, an RBI, and three runs scored, including the game-winning run, in UE’s 13-inning victory over Indiana State. Fick also pitched a complete game in the rubber match with ISU, hurling all eight innings, giving up four runs, just two earned, five hits, and struck out seven. Fick raised his batting average 19 points over the week to a conference-leading .409 and also leads the Valley with 61 RBI.

Ace Pitcher of the Week.
Sophomore Josh Biggs kept his perfect record alive this week, picking up two wins for the Aces and did not allow an earned run in the process. In UE’s, 8-1, midweek win over Oakland City, Biggs hurled the first three innings, allowing no runs, three hits, and struck out three to earn the win on UE’s staff pitching day. Biggs piloted Evansville through extra innings to a, 10-9, 13-inning Valley win over Indiana State, throwing 4.2 innings, allowing one unearned run, six hits, and struck out two. With a runner on first and the score tied, 8-8, in the bottom of the ninth, Biggs came out of the bullpen and retired his first two batters for the final outs of the frame to force extra innings. Biggs faced runners on second and third in the 12th, but bore down and got the final out. The only run the sophomore allowed was an unearned one in the 13th after the Aces had already scored two runs in the top of the inning. On the season, Biggs is 4-0 with a 2.08 ERA.

* Perkins Adds Sprick To 2011-12 Squad

Evansville native Conor Sprick will join the University of Evansville 2011-12 men's swimming and diving team, as announced by head coach Rickey Perkins.

A four-year letterwinner from Harrison High, Sprick joins the Aces after serving as team captain for the Warriors his senior year. During the 2010-11 season, Sprick notched first place finishes in the 100-yard breaststroke and the 200-yard individual medley at the Evansville City Meet. Sprick finished the season with a pair of Top-3 rankings in the Southern Indiana Athletic Conference, ending second in the league in the 100-breast and third in the 200-IM. Sprick led the Warriors to a seventh place finish at the 2011 SIAC sectionals, placing third in the 100-breast finish and fourth in the 200-IM. His third place time of 1:01.99 in the 100-breast came up just .5 seconds shy of a school record.

Sprick is also a member of the Greater Evansville Aquatic Team (GREAT). He is a four-time State qualifier for the GREAT team and was a Zone qualifier in the summer of 2011.

Graduating from Harrison with a 4.0 GPA, Sprick is planning to major in chemistry at UE.
